In this lesson, we will learn why Guy Fawkes wanted to blow up the houses of Parliament. You will hear and map the story of the Gunpowder Plot. We will learn about when and why the conspirators attempted to kill King James I and what happened to Guy Fawkes afterwards.

﻿Hi, everyone. It's really nice to see you. How are you doing today? Great, I'm glad to hear. My name is Miss. Emms and I am so excited to be teaching you a history lesson today. So, let's get started and see what we're going to be doing in today's lesson. Okay. So today, our key question is why did Guy Fawkes want to blow up the Houses of Parliament? And this is Lesson 1 of 3 about Guy Fawkes, and about Guy Fawkes' Day. And you are learning with me Miss Emms. I'm really happy to be here. So, first things first. We're going to have a look at some star words, and that means that those are words that are really important for our understanding of the lesson today. Next, we're going to think about when this happened. When did Guy Fawkes try to blow up the Houses of Parliament? After that, we're going to have a think about Catholics and Protestants, and don't worry if you don't know what those words mean yet. We're going to look at this. When we come to our star words and later on in the lesson. After that, I'm going to tell you the story of the Gunpowder Plot, okay? And we're going to map that story together. And finally, it will be time for the end of lesson quiz to see how much you have been able to remember from today's lesson. In this lesson, you're going to need three things. You're going to need some paper. You can have this on a blank piece of paper, or it might be part of a book, an exercise book, either is fine. In today's lesson it would be great if it was plain paper, not lined, because we're going to do, we're going to map a story, but don't worry if it is lined. You're going to need a pencil and you are going to need your history brain ready and raring to go. Can you give your brain a little rub for me like this? Check it's working, amazing. I'm going to go like this and you're going to copy me. Star words, star words, star words! Great, well done. Our first star word is King James. Your turn. It was actually King James I, and he is a really important person in this story. King James. Your turn. Okay, and we're going to be learning about what happened to King James and why he was important. The next star word is Guy Fawkes. Your turn. Again, Guy Fawkes is a really important person, and we're going to learn about why as the lesson progresses. The next star word is, or words together, The Gunpowder Plot. Your turn. Great, and we'll find out that this is what Guy Fawkes and a group of people, they planned to carry out something called The Gunpowder Plot. And you'll find out what that is as the lesson moves on. The next star word is religion. Your turn. You may have heard this word before. People have different religious beliefs. They belong to different religions, and there are a lot of different religions that exist. Today, we're going to be thinking about Christianity and we're going to be thinking about, and these are our next two star words, Catholics and Protestants. And we're going to learn who these people were and about some of the beliefs that they had. Okay, so when did it happen? Let's have a look at a timeline to help us think about when this historical event happened in relation to what's happening today. So here's our timeline. And you can see here at the end is today, where we are today. Not that long before today, that is where me, Miss. Emms was born. So quite close to today. My granny was born there. So again, a little bit, it's longer ago than when I was born. But again, we are quite close to today still. And there is when The Gunpowder Plot happened. So you can see that it was a long time ago. It was about 400 years ago, just over 400 years ago. It was in the year 1605 over 400 years ago, that's a really long time. And that means that it's not within our living memory. We can't talk to anybody who was alive in 1605, because it was over 400 years ago. So, I would like you to pause the video to complete your first task of today's history lesson. When did Guy Fawkes try to blow up the Houses of Parliament? And I want you to tell your screen, and I know that might feel a bit silly sometimes, but that's how we're going to learn today, that's how we're going to practise remembering the important facts that we're learning. So, you can do it one of two ways, either you can tell your screen just as if you're telling me. So you can say, "Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in..." and then say the year, or you might want to get a Teddy friend, who's going to do your learning with you. And perhaps you'll tell your Teddy these facts, because your Teddy probably wants to learn as well. So if you'd like to go and get your Teddy talk partner, then pause the video and go and get your Teddy talk partner now. Great, well done. So, either tell your screen or tell... Either tell your screen and tell me, or tell your Teddy talk partner, when did Guy Fawkes try to blow up the Houses of Parliament? And you're going to start with, "Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in..." Go pause the video and tell your Teddy or your screen, the answer. Great! Did you find, did you get the answer? In 1605, or you might have said over 400 years ago. So we are thinking about something that happened a long time ago. Well done everyone. Can you give yourself a little pat on the back for doing your first talk task to your screen? Well done. Okay, now we're going to listen to, we're going to have a look at the difference and similarities between Catholics and Protestants. So, the religion that we are thinking about today is Christianity, okay? And in 1605, there were two important Christian groups, the Catholics and the Protestants. Can you say, I'm going to say it, my turn, your turn. So my turn Catholics, Protestants. One more time, are you ready? Can we whisper it? Catholics, Protestants, great. So, Guy Fawkes was a Catholic. Guys Fawkes was a...? Amazing. And King James I was a Protestant. King James I was a...? A Protestant, well done. Now Catholics and Protestants shared lots of the same Christian beliefs, okay? They shared some Christian beliefs. But they also disagreed on a number of things. And that is why Guy Fawkes disagreed on a number of things with King James I. He shared some beliefs, but he also did not like what the Protestants were doing in the country of England, okay? So he didn't like, he didn't like a lot of the beliefs that the Protestants had. The Protestants were in charge of the country, okay? They were the ones in power, and King James I, the king, he was a Protestant. He was a...? Fantastic. Now Catholics, Guy Fawkes was a Catholic. And he and other Catholics were angry at laws that the king had made. Okay, can you show me an angry face? Great. They were angry at some of the laws that the king, King James I, a Protestant had made. They were feeling cross, okay? A quick task for you to complete. Can you write down these sentences and make sure you put the right words in the space. King James I was a... Either use the word Catholic or Protestant and Guy Fawkes was a... Either use the word Catholic or Protestant. And then you're going to say the hmm were in charge. The Catholics were in charge or the Protestants were in charge. So, King James I was a Protestant and Guy Fawkes was a Catholic. The Protestants were in charge. I'm going to to say that again, make sure you're listening carefully so you can tick or fix your answer. And if you have to fix, you never need to worry, because mistakes help us learn, they help our brains get bigger and they help us make sure that we don't make those mistakes again, so that we are learning. King James I was a Protestant. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic. The Protestants were in charge, okay? So, the story of The Gunpowder Plot. There were a group of conspirators and we're going to learn in one of our next lessons, what this word really means. But here, we need to understand that Guy Fawkes wasn't alone in his quest, in his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. He did it with a group of people, okay? So here is a picture of the conspirators and they are going to be important characters when we map the story, the true story of The Gunpowder Plot. We're going to map the story now. So you're going to need your piece of paper and your pencil. And you going to need to watch me, because I'm going to do the first bit, then you're going to do it. I'm going to do the second part, then you're going to do that. And we're going to carry on, until you and I have mapped the story of The Gunpowder Plot. Are you ready? Okay everyone, so it's time for us to map the true story of The Gunpowder Plot. And what we're going to do is we're going to arrange this story into six main parts, okay? So what you need to do first is you need to make sure that your piece of paper has six boxes, okay? And we're going to number them now. So I've got box number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Can you pause the video now? And can you make sure that you've split your page into six boxes just like mine. Pause and off you go. Great, well done everybody. Now it's time for us to start. So, I'm thinking about the first box now, the first part of the story of The Gunpowder Plot, okay? And we know as we've said earlier in the lesson, that this happened over 400 years ago. So, a long time ago. And we know that it happened in 1605. And I'm going to draw an arrow back to remind me that that is a long time ago. And we know that it happened in England. So I'm going to write England. I'm not forgetting the capital E, because we know that that's the name of a place. And you might remember that we spoke about the difference between Catholics and Protestants. And they share some similarities, some common beliefs, but there are some things that they do not agree on. So to show that, I'm just going to draw a really simple picture. Although there were lots of Catholics and lots of Protestants, I'm just going to draw two stick people. And I'm going to draw a C above this one for Catholics and a P above this one for Protestants. Can you pause the video now? And can you do your box 1? Off you go. Fantastic, well done everyone. Now, it's time for us to do box 2. So, we know that there was a king and important king and he was called King sound it out. King James I, King James I. And I'm going to draw a crown to remind me that he is the king. Now we also know that was he Catholic or Protestant? Tell your screen he was a... A protestant, well done. I'm actually going to write the important word Protestant Protestant. Okay, I would like you to now complete your box number 2. Off you go. Well done, fantastic. Okay, so next we know that there's a group of people don't we? And we're going to call them either the plotters or the conspirators, okay? So we know that there is a group of people who are angry. We know that Guy Fawkes is one of these people. And they are angry at the Protestants. They are Catholics and they want the country to be in Catholic control. So I'm going to draw a group of people. It doesn't really matter how many. I'm going to draw four stick people. And I'm just going to draw an angry expression, so with the eyebrows going down, to show that they are angry. And we know that they are angry, because they don't agree with the laws that King James, the Protestant king, has made. I would like you to draw your box number 3 now. Good luck, off you go, pause now. Great, well done everyone. Moving on to box 4. So, this is where Guy Fawkes comes in. So, I'm going to write his name Guy Fawkes. Don't forget your capitals for both parts of his name. And he is one of the group of people. So he is one of the group of conspirators, plotters. And I am going to draw a crown with a cross through, because he would like to kill King James I. He does not want him to be king. He wants to kill him by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. So that's why I've got a big cross through the crown. Can you pause the video now to draw your box 4? Off you go. Great. Well done everyone, you're doing an amazing job. Now it's time for us to move on to our fifth box. So on the night of the... So it was actually very late on the 4th of November, but we are going to refer to it as the 5th of November, because it was in the morning of the 5th of November. And Guy Fawkes is down underneath, okay? And he's guarding, he's near his gunpowder. I'm going to try and draw what looks like two barrels, but it doesn't matter what yours looks like. We know that that is gunpowder, he's down in the cellar, in the basement, and he's guarding, he's standing next to his gunpowder. I'm just going to write Guy Fawkes, GF, for Guy Fawkes to remind me that's who we're talking about. And he wants to blow up the Houses of Parliament. He wants to blow up the Houses of Parliament, Houses of Parliament. I would like you to pause the video now to fill in your box 5. Off you go everyone. Great, well done. And now for our final part of the story, the true story, we know that he was caught. So, I'm going to draw some eyes, because what happened is somebody sent a letter, someone informed an important political person that this was going to happen. So they were able to stop this from happening, because somebody informed, they let them know, an important political person. So Guy Fawkes was caught. I'm going to write the key word caught, and he was sent to jail. I'm going to draw my bars. He was sent to jail for what he had tried to do. Can you draw your box 6 now on your sheet of paper? Pause and go. You're so right. He wanted to blow up the House of Parliament because he wanted to kill King James I, because he didn't agree with his views. He wanted the Catholics to be in charge, not the Protestants. Okay, and now everyone, it's going to be time for you to complete an end of lesson quiz. Who was Guy Fawkes?

Hopefully, you've been able to access lessons one, lesson one of this unit of learning. So you're ready for today's lesson. Let's see what we're going to be doing. Okay. So our key question today is, who was Guy Fawkes? And this is lesson two of three. And you're learning with me, Miss Emms. Hopefully before you do this lesson, you've had a chance to watch the video and complete the tasks for lesson one, because that learning comes before the learning we're going to do today. Okay, let's have a look at our agenda. So first things first, we're going to go over our Star Words. So our key important words that we need to have a good understanding of to be able to do stage learning. Then we're going to have a think about the person, Guy Fawkes. And we've already thought about Guy Fawkes in lesson one, but today we're going to think about who he was in more detail. After that, we're going to look we're going to have a think about some of the other conspirators. Okay, the other plotters who were involved in this secret plan. And then we're going to think about what happens next. What happened, when guy after Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament? He was a catholic, and he didn't agree with the protestants laws, he didn't agree with King James's laws he wanted to kill King James. You might have had any of those answers, when you told your screen. Okay, let's move on. So, Guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes was one of the important conspirators that wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Okay, but he wasn't the only one. Before we learn about some of the others, we're going to have a think about his story. And we're going to learn some facts about him. So, Guy Fawkes was born on the 13th of April 1570 in a city called York, okay. His catholic religion was very important to him, as we've learnt that he was a catholic, and this was really important to him. He went to war in Europe to fight on behalf of Spain, which was a catholic country. A man called Robert Catesby wanted Guy Fawkes' help in a plot to kill King James. So Robert Catesby was in charge of this plot, and he wanted Guy Fawkes to help him. Robert Catesby wanted Guy Fawkes to help because he knew how to use gunpowder. So Guy Fawkes knew how to use gunpowder, which is a very explosive and dangerous thing. Okay, so Robert Catesby wanted Guy Fawkes to help, so that he had Guy Fawkes's expertise in using gunpowder. Okay. Quick recap question for you. Can you remember the name of the man who asked Guy Fawkes to help him? Tell your screen if you can, and then resume when you're finished, press pause. The man was called? Did you get it? The man was called Robert Catesby. Robert Catesby. Okay, and why did Robert Catesby ask Guy Fawkes to help? What was the reason that Robert Catesby asked Guy Fawkes to help? Tell your screen, Robert Catesby, asked Guy Fawkes to help because? Tell your screen. Right. Robert Catesby knew that Guy Fawkes was able to or was good at using gunpowder. Okay, so he needed his help. So let's have a think now about the conspirators. Conspiracy first is an important term that we need to have a good understanding of. Conspiracy is, means a secret plan, so a conspiracy is a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. That means, according to the law is not allowed or it's going to do some harm some damage. So let's pass that again. Conspiracy, is a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. What does conspiracy mean? Let's practise again. Conspiracy is a secret plan by a group or group of people to do something unlawful or harmful. Pause the video now and tell your screen or your teddy, what is a conspiracy? A conspiracy is, go pause now. Great. A conspiracy is a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful. So, here is a picture of the conspirators that were involved in the gunpowder plot. Okay, so we've got, we've got Guy Fawkes, and we've got Robert Catesby. Remember, Robert Catesby was sort of the ringleader. That means that he was in charge and he asked for Guy Fawkes to help him. I'm going to let you pause now if you'd like to have a look at the other people in this picture who were involved in the conspiracy. Pause if you'd like to look at the picture for a little bit longer. Great, well done. We're just going to focus at the moment on Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby, and we've learned that Robert Catesby was the man in charge. And why did he want Guy Fawkes to help him again? He wanted Guy Fawkes to help him because, tell me. Great. Because Guy Fawkes knew how to use gunpowder, which is very dangerous and explosive. So what do you think that all these people had in common? Okay, and you're going to use the words, catholics, protestants, and disliked catholics, protestants and disliked before you write your whole sentence, can you just write the starter? In my opinion, I want you to just write those three words now, in my opinion. Pause and off you go. And now you're thinking about what these people had in common. So what's the same between all of these people? So you can say in my opinion, these people were all, and you're going to try and use catholics, protestants and disliked. Pause and have a go at doing that now. Okay, so you should have had something like, in my opinion, all of these people were catholics, who disliked protestants or who disliked the views, or beliefs or some of the views or beliefs of protestants. Okay. Right, well done everyone on completing that task. So, now we're going to think about what happened next? The conspiracy did not work. Okay. What these people wanted to do to blow up the Houses of Parliament, it did not work. Why? That plan was revealed to an important political person. So somehow an important political person, someone who was able to help stop the conspiracy found out about the plan, and they were able to help stop it from happening. And that means that on the 5th of November 1605, Guy Fawkes was caught with the gunpowder moments before the king was about to open parliament. So it nearly was successful for Guy Fawkes and the other people the other conspirators, but in the end it wasn't. He was caught moments before it was going to happen. And Guy Fawkes went to jail on November the 5th, he went to jail or prison on November the 5th for what he had done. So quickly a task for your recap task. Why was the plan revealed? Is it option one, the conspirators were too loud. Option two, the plan was revealed to an important political person, or option three, one of the conspirators was nervous and exposed the plan. Can you point to the option that you think is correct. Off you go point now. If your finger is on option two, the plan was revealed to an important political person then well done. Let's get started and see what we're doing today. So, in today's lesson we're going to answer the following key question. How do we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day? And this is lesson three of three with me, Miss Emms That means that hopefully before completing this lesson and watching this video, you should have had a go at watching videos one and two, so that you're prepared for this learning. We have learned about Guy Fawkes and what happens on the 5th of November, 1605. And today we're going to learn about how we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day and why we do as well. So here is our agenda. We're going to start off with some Star Words, before moving on to thinking about why we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. After this, we'll have a think about bonfire nights and what bonfire nights looks like in around the country. And then we're going to have a think about what do people do to celebrate. When we set a celebrate Guy Fawkes Day, what we are celebrating, and the people who choose to celebrate, what they are celebrating is the safety of King James the first. Okay. And here you can see on your screen, a picture of King James the first. He was not killed as had intended by Guy Fawkes, and the rest of the plotters. He was not killed. The conspiracy was not successful. Okay, so he remains safe and he was not killed by Guy Fawkes and the rest of the conspirators. That is what we are celebrating, what we're commemorating or remembering, when we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. So, a quick task for you. Can you pause the video to complete this task? And you can see a picture there of a big bonfire. And we celebrate on the 5th of November. I wonder if you know why it's on the 5th of November every year. Can you tell your screen, I think it's because... Right, well done. When do we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day? Some people choose to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day every year on the 5th of November. This is because we are commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot on the 5th of November, 1605. And commemorating means when you do something to remember something that's happened. Okay. So we are marking, remembering, commemorating the failure of the Gunpowder Plot, which happened, or didn't happen on the fifth of November 1605. And because it happened on the 16th of the 5th of November 1605. That's why some people choose to celebrate it every year, on the 5th of November to mark this occasion. And you might have heard of bonfire night before. You're not, if you have. So some people celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by lighting a bonfire and gathering with other people. And remember, we thought carefully about why we do this to commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Let's have a think about what activities and what traditions people have to celebrate bonfire nights. The first is that people watch fireworks. Okay. And you may have seen fireworks for other special occasions, or perhaps you've been to a bonfire night celebration where you have seen fireworks in the sky. That's the first thing that people do to celebrate bonfire night. People also burn, sometimes people burn, a straw Guy Fawkes on a bonfire. So a model, a straw model of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.
