In this lesson, we will learn about the micro:bit. We will also write and execute our first Python programs on the micro:bit using simple coding patterns. 


Hello physical world

﻿Hi, I'm Allen, your computer teacher for this unit, and it's one of my absolute favourites, it's physical computing. And we're going to be using a BBC micro:bit. You will need one of these, for this unit. And you'll also need a USB cable to plug into your computer. We're going to be using a piece of software called Mu, to write the programmes for these two. So, you'll need to have that installed on your machine. If you haven't, you may need a parent or carer to help you instal that before you get going. If you can turn off all notifications and remove any distractions, and when you're ready, we'll get started. Okay, in this lesson, we'll explore the micro:bit hardware components, we'll create our first programmes for the micro:bit, and we'll learn the process of flashing and running your programmes on the micro:bit. So, the micro:bit is a tiny computer. It's a microprocessor that can execute one programme at a time. You can write programmes for the micro:bit on your computer and then transfer them to the micro:bit to be executed. If we look at the front of the micro:bit, you can see there are a number of features. So, there are two input buttons, which are A and B. There's an LED display, which is the five by five matrix of lights on there that you can light up for showing messages or creating patterns or images. There's also a light sensor, so it can determine how light or dark it is. And across the bottom here, there are some GPIO pins or General Purpose Input/Output pins, that we can use to connect to the physical world. And then if we turn around and look at the back, we have a temperature sensor. Which we can use in our programmes. There is a compass, an accelerometer, and there are also some radio communications for inputs or output as well. So, as I mentioned in the introduction we'll be using a programme called Mu to code the programmes for our micro:bit. So let's take a look at that environment here on the screen. There's a mode button at the top left which will be able to select our BBC micro:bit mode, so that we can write MicroPython programmes in Mu, to be able to transfer to our micro:bit. And here's an example programme that we can start and investigate and have a look at the structure of what's going on here. So, at the start of every one of our programmes for the micro:bit we put, from micro:bit import star. So, from the micro:bit module we want to kind of import everything that's available to us so that we can access the features on this device. And then here, we've got a message that says display.scroll, and then in brackets and quotes, we've got Hello there! So, display represents the micro:bit's five by five LED matrix. And scroll is an action that you can perform on that display. So, we can send messages scrolling across those LEDs. With things like this, you can look up the other objects and the associated methods in the documentation, if you'd like to do so. Flashing is the process of transferring one of the programmes in Mu across to your micro:bit using the USB cable. So, when your programme is ready, you can flash it across and it will pretty much execute straight away. If there are any syntax errors, then they will show up on the five by five display. So, you may have to read the message that's running across the display, to find out the line where you may have a syntax error in your code. If there are no syntax errors then your code should execute straight away. So now, I'll demonstrate how to write that basic programme and flash it to your micro:bit. Okay, so let's take a look at the Mu programme. Here we have a mode button and we can make sure that we've got the BBC micro:bit mode selected. So, we can write MicroPython code from micro:bit programmes. And they're going to pop in here, the code that you saw in the demonstration, in the slides. So, we've got those two lines that were explained before and I'm going to plug in my micro:bit There we go. I'm going to plug it in, a light should come on and flush. It's connecting, and then we'll get a box popping up, So, now opening file manager. So, I can open it up, and I can see the files on there. So, if I was to choose to save my file locally to the the machine, I'm working on here, I could drag it onto the micro:bit that way. Alternatively, which is easier, I can click this flush button, which is up here, and that will flush the programme to my micro:bit. And once it's flushed, it will say, "Hello world," across the screen there. And that will only run once because I've only asked it to do it once, but if I wanted to again, I'll restart it, press the button on the back, and it will restart the micro:bit and rerun the programme. And that's a basic introduction in writing a file and flashing it to your micro:bit. Okay, so hopefully that demonstration was useful for you. And now you're ready for your first task. So task one, is to replicate what I just did there. So, you're going to connect your micro:bit to your computer and using Mu. If you've got it installed now, hopefully, you'll be able to code those two lines and flush it to your micro:bit and see your code working. So, using the worksheet, follow the instructions and away you go. Okay, how did you get along? Did your message you've work okay, and you've scrolled across the screen? And did you notice the difference when you chose to type in the word show, instead of scroll? So, the letters just appear one after the other, rather than scrolling smoothly across the screen. Well, now we have another task. So, we're going to display some images on that five by five display now. So, using the worksheet, you've got some code and you can modify the code next to the displayed image. As you can see on the right, it says display.show Image.HEART, while there are other images that you can see on there, such as HAPPY, SAD, YES, NO. Using your worksheet, you can have a go at creating some of those images and displayed them on your micro:bit. You can pause the video, and complete the task Okay, did you enjoy sharing those images on your micro:bit? There's quite a few, if you want to have a look in the documentation online there are plenty of others to experiment with as well. As you know, from the beginning, when we looked at the features of the micro:bit, it has an accelerometer and that means it can detect movement on three axes. So, it can detect on that one can detect it on that one and it can detect on that one. So, three axes, three dimensions that it can detect movement on. Looking at the programme opposite. We're introducing an if statement. So, we've got the usual from micro:bit import star and it says if something display, show image HAPPY. So, that's the smiley face, otherwise clear. So, the conditioning line two is missing for now, but you can see there are two possible branches showing happy when the condition is true or clearing the display when the condition is false. Using the worksheet, copy the code on the right hand side and fill in the missing condition and see if you can get the programme working. You can pause the video and complete the task. Okay, so you can see on the screen in a second, what it should have looked like when you had your code working. So, when you tilt the micro:bit one way the smiley face will disappear. And then when you tilt it the other way, you can see the smiling face appear. So, that's using the accelerometer to detect gestures on your micro:bit. Bare bones

﻿Hi, I'm Allen, your computing teacher for this unit on physical computing. And this is lesson two of six. In this lesson, we're going to be looking at the individual LEDs on the micro bit, and locating how we can light up each individual one on their own without displaying messages or pictures as a whole. But looking at lighting individual LEDs. You will need your microbit obviously for this lesson and a USB cable to connect it to your computer. You can turn off all notifications because we don't want to be disturbed while we're doing this cool stuff. When you're ready, we can make a start. Okay, in this lesson we're going to continue using the five by five LED matrix on the microbit display some information. You'll know from last lesson that we could display some images. And just to recap on that one, I've got a little test for you to begin with. You're going to show some images a bit like you did last time. But this time you are going to use a for loop to iterate through different images rather than just having one. So there is a worksheet for this task. All explained on there as far as the code you need, and what you need to complete. You can pause the video and get started. Okay, so here's one possible solution. We've seen the faces from the from lesson one, so you got the smiley face at first. And then we've got an umbrella here. And then we have a ghost. So the code would look a little bit like this. So I replaced the gaps, I filled the gaps in with the words happy, umbrella and ghost. And as it said in the work, there's lots and lots of images you can look for to display on the micro bit, there are just three of them. For the loop, we've iterated through the list. So in that list of the happy face and umbrella and a ghost, we've said for image in images. So for every image in that list, display the image, okay. And I've replaced in the brackets, I've put the word image there. So, that's going to go through each image in the list. It will go through it once, display the image and then it would stop. But if you just want to leave it on, on the last image, then that would be fine. If you wanted it to clear at the end, then we'd use display dot clear. And that would clear the display ready for if you want to run it again. So Python is case sensitive. Uppercase and lowercase characters are different. So you've had an issue there, maybe that might be something to look for, if it didn't work. And what I would encourage you to do is if you didn't get it working, put some of this code in and give it a go and give it a try. So you're at least successful with getting an iteration of some images going through using a loop. Because it's really important that rather than leaving something unfinished, they actually give it a go and you can have some success with the images. Okay, let's move on. I think there right in the very beginning, when we did the introduction that in this lesson, we're going to concentrate on controlling individual LEDs, okay. So when we have the happy face or the sad face or the umbrella, then the microbit takes that and interpret certainly knows which LEDs to display or to light up. But we can control them individually. So if you look at the diagram on the screen, you can see x and y coordinates. And they relate to the positions of the LEDs on the microbit. So for instance, if I wanted to light up that top left hand corner LED, then the code for that would be display dot set underscore pixel. And then in brackets I've got x, y, and value. So x is along the top as the x axis, so that's the column number. And then the Y is the row number. So for the one in the very top left, you can see it would be zero comma zero. The value variable at the end, that's just how bright you want it to be, okay. So this ranges from naught which would be off, which would be no point, doing the line of code or so you probably start at the lowest, which would be one all the way up to nine. So nine is the brightest it will go, go. So I've got a task for you now. So complete the programme below to light up the top right pixel. So going on that example, you probably be able to see straight away what the variables may be. You've got the four lines of code there, there is a worksheet for you to fill in to do this, other worksheet for you to follow to do this task. And then there are some other tasks that follow on from it using what you've learned during the first part of the task, okay. So you can pause the video and see how you get along. Okay, hope you got that working. You can see on the little animation there what it should look like. You get one going one after the other. And in the last part of the task here to put it all within a while loop to keep it going pretty much forever as mine is there. So one after the other, each corner is lighting up. You can see from the variables on the screen, the individual rows and column values that have been put in there so that you can see those lighting at one after the other. Another way of doing this would be to use a kind of a list and indicate in that list which LEDs are to be turned on, and to what level of brightness. So here in the example, you can see we've got corners equals image. And then within that image, we've got a reference for each individual LED within each row, and the number of the brightness for that LED, or what brightness that LED should be, okay. And if you want to make it even more compact, what you could do is you could do the line of code right at the very bottom there. So you just have it all on one row. Visually, personally I like the one above, because you can kind of see how though, how it might be displayed and you can recognise which ones might need to be switched on or off, and you can kind of see it before you even run it. So can you see the relationship between those numbers and the LEDs? Well, hopefully can. If we look at the picture, on the right hand side, all four corners are lit up again. And they're quite bright or they're very bright, they're as bright as they'll go. And we can see from the code on the left, the ones in the individual corners of that kind of text representation of the LEDs, they're nine so that it's as bright as they'll go. And equally, you know, we could put any of those other zeros to numerical values between naught and nine, and that would show or not show the LED different brightnesses. Okay, so we've got task three for you now. What values will be required to produce the star on the image on the right hand side? So you can see that star image. The LEDs have got varying brightnesses now. So you might have to experiment with this. And you can see the code on the left hand side is got bunch of question marks in, you're going to see if you can replicate that picture on the right hand side. Now we'll say, the four corners, this time, we're all off. So you can pretty safely say that all four corners are going to be zero. Okay, so that's a little tip for you. And then as you go through, you'll have a look and see what values you think will go into make a star. Okay, so there is a worksheet for this, you can pause the video, and hope you enjoy this task. Okay, how did you get along trying to replicate the star? Well, the tip here as I said, when I gave you the introduction to this task was the four corners are all off. So they would all obviously be zero. And then if you're looking see that the brightest one is the very centre LED. So that was the brightest we can have with nine, isn't it? Yeah. So that one would actually be nine, and the four kind of around it above below, to the left and to the right, they're bright, but they're not as bright. So in this instance, on my example, I've got them as seven. And then the ones at the corners of those as fives. And then as it dissipates outwards, the numbers gradually go down. So I've got some threes in there as well. So that would make that star so you can have some fun, not just making your own images, but you can make your own images with differing levels of brightness as well. Okay, so hope you're enjoying this. It's lots of fun coding LEDs and making them very bright sparkle and twinkle and what have you. In this one we're going to sparkle some LEDs randomly. Okay, so we're going to use randint which basically generates a random number. So the different line of code in this one is from random, import randint. So this is a random module, just like the microbit module. But we only want rand integer random whole number from this. So we're not putting a star, we're just saying, actually, from the random module, we only want to deal with randint. So we're making two variables, one called x one called y, and we're making a random number between what? So that's the bit you're going to have to figure out. So as far as the x and y values, they're going to be a random number but between what. We're also making a brightness variable, and we're making that a random number, what will the two variables been there, the start and the finish. So you have to think about that. And then it will display those x, y and brightness variables in a loop while true, if user already in this lesson. So you can complete the task and see how you get along. Okay, so this was your task to complete the programme to set random pixels to a random brightness level, and create a sparkling effect. So you can see the boxes have been filled in in this example now and I've gone for naught and four on both the x and y because if you remember the column was between naught and four, as was the row number, and then brightness between naught and nine. So naught would be off as we know from previously and nine would be the brightest those LEDs can go. And then we display the individual LEDs to that in that row and in that column to that brightness. We just keep going round around around around doing that. So if you've done that you should see a really rapid sparkle of LEDs on your microbit. Making connections (Part 1)

﻿Hi, I'm Allan your computer teacher for this unit and this is physical computing lesson two. You will need your micro:bit again today and a USB cable to connect it to your computer. You also need a couple of crocodile clips, and you'll need a LED. Okay, so we're going do some cool stuff with those today. As always turn off all notifications cause you don't get disturbed when you're doing cool physical computing, remove any other distractions that are nearby and when you're ready we can get started. Okay, in this lesson we're going to write programmes that use the GPIO pins to generate outputs and receive input. So firstly, look at this picture on the right-hand side, how can you light up the LED? Okay, so you can pause the video if you want to think about it and we'll resume in a sec. Of course, if you wanted to light up the LED you'd form a closed circuit. So the way you would do that is you join up those two red crocodile clips that are not connected, they're connected to the positive end of the battery. And the positive is connected to the long leg of the LED, which is important because power only flows through an LED one way. And the shorter leg is connected to the negative term of the battery. Okay, as we know from previously when we discussed the features of the micro:bit, the micro:bit can be connected to other components through those GPIO pins to make part of a circuit. So as we said before, GPIO means General Purpose Input Output. And you can see on the diagram, I've got a couple of things there. And as I said at the beginning of the lesson you need crocodile clips and an LED for this lesson to be able to complete some of the tasks. So through the pins, your programmes can control the power in a circuit which would be the output and through the pins, they can detect power in a circuit which would be input. So those GPIO pins on the micro:bit are referred to us pin0, pin1 and pin2. And they're nicely kind of labelled on the micro:bit as well as notes one and two. There are smaller ones in between as you can see, but we're not going to be using those in these lessons. But if you had a special adapter to dock your micro:bit into, you could make use of extra GPIO pins too. I'm going to show you a little bit of a demonstration on how to use the terminals, the GPIO pins with some crocodile clips. Okay, so here's mine set up already as you can see and I've got the code flashed onto it. And for ease of recording, I've attached some crocodile clips to pin zero and ground, and just in the same way as if I was to touch it with my finger. So when I touch, and make that closed circuit as we saw at the beginning, the smiley face appears. And then when the circuit is broken, the sad face appears. Your task now is to kind of replicate that using the worksheet. You can complete the task on writing a programme that will sense touch. So it works in a similar way as to having the crocodiles clips connected. You can pause the video and complete the task. How did you get along? Well, when you saw my demonstration, I kind of mixed the two up between something that would touch the two pin, the two terminals here for zero and ground. And I use the freezer filming I can attach crocodile clips to it, it's exactly the same. Any contact between the wires if you were to attach it to the three volt pin as you can see on the diagram. And the one pin would allow a circuit to be formed, and current to flow between the power pin and the input pin. So you're going to have a task now to do using this kind of method. So you can pause the video, it's task two which is a makeshift switch and you can complete the task. Okay, so in this task you were required to connect some crocodile clips to pin one and the three volt pin, and record some answers as to when you take the coding and run it. When you touched the two clips together as supposed to when you didn't touch the two clips together. And what you should have found is when the switch is off, or the crocodile clips are not touching, you'll get a zero result. When the crocodile clips are touching which means you have formed a circuit, then you get a one as a result. The next part of this task was to modify the programme so that when your crocodile clips were connected, then you were showing some kind of image for YES which will be a tick. And if the crocodile clips were not touching, then it would display NO or a cross the image for now on that. And you can see a sample solution on the screen for that code on this slide. If you didn't manage to get that working, you can pause this as before, you know, make sure you're typing the code to get a working solution before you move on. Really important that you feel that you've achieved that. And you understand that it's, any mistakes that you've made, you kind of know why you made them or you know where they were made. So, type that thing if you didn't manage to do so or get that right previously. Okay, so now I'll demonstrate how to light up an LED using a micro:bit crocodile clips and an LED. Okay, so I'm in And I'm going to show you how to get the LED lighting up. So with all programmes using the micro:bit from micro:bit import star to import everything. I'm going to put this in a while loop, while true so it does whatever I'm asking it to do forever. I'm going to have a variable called out value. And I'm going to set that equal to integer with the value of button a whether it's pressed or not. So if button a pressed, then it would be a one. And if the button a isn't pressed, then it will be a zero. Don't forget to put the correct amount of brackets there as well. I'm thinking write that value or write a value to the pin zero . Here we go, so I'll send that out value to pin zero So that will activate the circuit depending on whether it is zero or one. It will send power if it's a one and if not it won't to the LED. And also just as a little visual display on the LED matrix. I'm also going to put that out value out to display there. So I'll flash this and you'll be able to see it working. Okay, you can see here, I've already got my red crocodile clip on pin zero and I've got my ground pin my black crocodile clip on the ground. Here's my LED, this is a long leg. I'm going to attach that to the positive crocodile clip and the negative there. It's showing zero because button a isn't pressed. As soon as I press button a, it shows a one and the LED lights up. If you let go, it's a zero. So by detecting the input of this button, it's getting the value from the button, sending that, assigning that to a variable. We're sending that variable to the pin, and that pin in turn is creating a circuit. She kind of cool. Right, so now it's your turn. You saw my demonstration of how to light up the LED, there is a worksheet to complete for this task with some code there. See if you can get your LED lighting up. Okay, did you manage to work out how that programme works and get your led lighting up? Well, as you can see from the programme on the left-hand side there, we're creating an out value variable. And the value of that is an integer, and it will either be a zero or a one depending on if button a is pressed or not. And then what's happening to pin zero is it's writing that value to pin zero or making, sending that value to pin zero. And then obviously if it sends a zero, then the LED will be off. And if it sends a one, the LED will be on. Don't forget there is a quiz to complete at the end of every lesson. And we'd love you to share your work with Oak National. Making connections (Part 2)

﻿Hi, I'm Allen a computer teacher for this unit, which is physical computing. This is lesson four, which is called Making Connection Part Two. You will need your micro bit again today and a lead to connect it to your computer. And you'll also need two crocodile clips. So this lesson you'll also need some speakers or a set of headphones. That's got these small three and a half mil Jack on the end that looks something like that. Okay? So the phone notifications that are nearby, remove any distractions and when you're ready, we'll get started. Okay, in this lesson we're going to use the micro bits built-in input and output devices to produce some sound. From previous lessons you know that we can use outputs on the LED display to send messages or create images. But these GPIO pins can also be connected to headphones or speakers. And like I said in the introduction, you will need some headphones for this lesson If you want to do some of the tasks. There is an illustration on the right hand side on how to set up your headphones. So we use crocodile clips again and we connect one of them to pin 0. And we connect one of them to the ground pin. Now it doesn't matter which way around they connect to the headphone Jack, as long as you've got that metal portion clear, like you can see in the diagram there. Okay, so on this one we've got the pin zero all the way built it up to the left and we've got the ground one on the right hand side just before the end. Okay. So if you set it up like that, then everything should work just fine. If you find that it doesn't work, when you're setting it up, it may be the case that you just need to adjust those crocodile clips. So they not going past the little lines, the boundaries of where each section on that jacket. Okay. So you're going to have some code below when, when that code is completed, it allows your micro bit to play some melodies. Now we are importing the music module here because we do want to make use of some of the features or the functions and melodies that are available to us on the micro bit and quite straightforward. When we fill in that purple section with a piece of code, then we can play a specific melody. I'll show you a demonstration of that now. Okay. So as always from micro bit import star and everything. and this time, we're also going to make use of the music module, import music and quite straightforward. All we're going to do is we're going to say music, play music dot blues. So this one, okay. So now when I flash that, you'll be able to see what happens. Okay. So I've got my micro bit and I flashed the programme and I can connect one of them to that end and one to that end, Of my my speaker jack or headphones, whatever you got. And I'm just going to reset my programme by pressing the button on the back. There you go and you can hear the tune. That was blues if you're interested. So there you go. Okay. So have you found that useful, you've now got tasks to do, and there's a little piece of code there for you on the worksheet. There are some additional melodies names of melodies that you could type in. So what I'd like you to do is pause the video and complete the task. Okay? I hope you enjoyed that. It's lots of fun putting those different melodies and the sounds in there and understanding that the micro bit can, you know play tunes is really cool. I have a challenge for you now. So what I'm going to challenge you to do is using some of the snippets on the screen that you can see there some of those are from a previous lesson and some are from obviously today's lesson. What I'd like you to do is see if you can get the micro bit to play a melody. When one of the pins is touched, Okay? pause the video and give it a go. Okay. Did you manage to get that working? Well, I hope you did. And I've got another challenge for you now, making it a little bit more intricate. So I'd like you to do a similar kind of challenge. But this time when you touch one of the pins, not only does it display an image, but that it plays the tune as well. So you can get two outputs from, from the one input from your pin. You can pause the video and complete the task. Okay, I hope you managed to do that. And if you didn't, there's a slide on the worksheet right to the very end, that's got a coded solution for you to give it a go. It's only about eight lines of code to get it finished. Don't forget. Mixing it up!

﻿Hi I'm Allen, your computing teacher for this unit, Physical Computing. And this is lesson five, which is called Mixing It Up. In this lesson you're going to use all the skills you've learnt throughout the course of these lessons, to produce your own working game on the micro:bit. As always, turn off all notifications and remove any distractions. And when you're ready, we can get started. In this lesson we're going to create a game for the micro:bit, that uses all of the skills that you've learnt throughout this unit. As you know, we've looked at buttons, we've used gestures, we've lit up LEDs, and we've produced sound. Sometimes using GPIO pins to sense a touch on one of the pins, or if we connected crocodile clips up and lit LEDs up. All of those things together, have allowed us to get to grips with the input and output features of the micro:bit. So I want to provide you with a scenario in a second and it's going to require you to write a programme that incorporates lots of what we've done during these lessons. So you may have to go back and look at some of your old programmes, to see some of the code. you will, by the end of it, have a working game that you'll be able to play on your micro:bit. Okay, task one is to decompose a guess the number game. Guess the number means that the user will think of a number, so if I think of, you know, number 74, then the micro:bit will guess a number and we'll have to produce some input or provide some input to the micro:bit, to tell it whether it's higher or lower than the number it's guessed, okay. Using the worksheet, you're going to break down the problem into other sub problems. Okay, so don't think of the problem as one big programme, think of it in smaller parts. What are the individual bits that need to be solved? There's a lot more information in the worksheet for you, to give you some ideas on what the programme needs to be able to do. So go ahead and pause the video and complete the task. Okay, well here's my list for if I was decomposing a guess the number game. So we need some way of starting the game. So it may be by shaking the micro:bit or pressing a button, that's up to you. We need some kind of starting variables for where we're going to guess, compare a guess to. Some conditions for guessing, response from the user. So what are we going to use there again, buttons or gestures. And what to do if the guess is correct or incorrect. So when it's correct, are you going to be able to you know, show a display or show a tick or play a tune, or both would be great. And what to do if the guess is incorrect. So again, are you going to put a cross, or some kind of disappointing melody. Could do that kind of thing, and then ending the game, what happens at the finish? And if you want to restart it. Okay, so lots of those things, most of those things you've done in the previous lessons. So now it's just a case of using all those skills to produce something new. Okay, so now task two, coding the guess the number game. You've got the whole problem broken down into sub problems. So now what you're going to do, is you're going to solve those problems individually and build it all up together, to create a working game on the micro:bit. Don't forget to test regularly, so that you know that one piece is working and then you can move on to the next part of the game, best of luck.
