Conjunct melodies

﻿Hi everyone. I'm Ms Boyd and I'll be your music teacher today. In this lesson we are going to learn about conjunct melodies. In this lesson you will learn how to recognise a conjunct melody. You'll have a go at performing a conjunct melody, and you'll get the opportunity to compose using a conjunct melody. But before we get started, should we begin with a Hello Song? ♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Hello, hello ♪ ♪ It's good to see you ♪ ♪ Hello, hello ♪ ♪ It's good to see you ♪ ♪ I must say ♪ ♪ You've made my day ♪ ♪ Hello, hello, hello. ♪ So what is a conjunct melody? Melody is a musical pattern. There are different types of melodies and melodies can be used in loads of different ways. In songs, the main tune of the song is the melody but sometimes in storytelling, the melody represents a character. Now we can change what the melody does to make us think and feel in a different way. Conjunct just means going up and down in order of pitch. Have a listen to this conjunct melody. Did you hear that those notes were going up the musical ladder in quite an ordered way? ♪ Do, do, do, do, do. ♪ Now that kind of melody is always quite interesting 'cause it makes us think something's coming, something's about to happen. Have a listen to the same melody backwards. What does that make you think? Yeah. Like, something's happened, now I'm sad. There are loads of different moods you can create but a conjunct melody often is used as a musical device when we're telling stories. In films and cartoons composers use musical devices, such as conjunct melody to play with our emotions and to tell us part of the story. A bit later we are going to explore a story using a conjunct melody. But before that let's practise a bit more listening. Have a listen to this melody. Is it conjunct or is it not? What do you think? I know it's quite tricky at first to figure out if the melody's conjunct or not. The rule is does it go up in steps? Or does it go down in steps? Have another listen to this melody. That first part of the melody, ♪ Do, do, do, do, do ♪ It leaped didn't it, it jumped in notes. It didn't necessarily go up the steps per se. You had this, there were a few gaps in between the notes. Quite a musical leap. So it's not conjunct at all. Have a listen to this example. What do you think? That's right, that was conjunct. It was going downwards, but it was going in steps, wasn't it? ♪ Do, do, do, do, do. ♪ Have another listen. So that was a conjunct melody. Great work. Let's try another example. What do you think? Right, that wasn't conjunct either was it? It was a nice musical pattern but it was moving all over the place, which meant it was not conjunct at all. So remember, the golden rule is that a conjunct melody goes up or down in tiny steps. Now for our performance challenge. For this activity we are going to create a story. Have a look at my friend on the screen. What is he doing? That's right. From this picture, we can see that this person is going up the stairs. Have a listen to how we can use a conjunct melody in this story to show that this man is going up the stairs. Did that sound like he was walking up the stairs? Have another listen. That conjunct melody going upwards in pitch really did sound like the man was walking up those stairs, wasn't it? Great. Now, we're going to have a go again. Let's imagine that this guy is coming down the stairs but we are going to sing a downwards conjunct melody. Are you ready? ♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Do, do, do, do, do ♪ Let's add some words to that. We're going to sing "walking down the stairs" in a conjunct melody. So have a listen to this. ♪ Off I go ♪ ♪ Walking down the stairs ♪ Did you hear that? Our conjunct melody really did represent what we think the man was doing. Now let's add another musical pattern. Let's imagine that the man goes up the stairs and then he forgets something and has to go back down. So we're going to sing "walking up the stairs, walking down the stairs" and we're going to use a conjunct melody to get us there and back. Now, for your third activity today I would like you to pause this video. You have a composing task. I would like you to have a think about how else a conjunct melody can be used in a story. I want you to think about what might happen in that next part of the story. What does the man do? Does he fall over? Does he drop his suitcase? I would like you to draw or sketch what you think might happen next. And while you're drawing and sketching I would like you to sing a conjunct melody to match the picture. Feel free to rewind this video and have a look at the picture that we've used or listen to the examples of conjunct melodies that I shared. Take your time with this one. Disjunct melodies

Melody is a musical pattern, it can be the main tune of a song or it can just be a musical pattern in a film. There are different types of melodies which create different types of sounds. Today we're going to learn about disjunct melodies. Now, disjunct just means all over the place, quite messy actually. Have a listen to this example of a disjunct melody. Did you hear that that melody was all over the place? It didn't go up in steps did it, and it didn't go down in steps. It jumped up and it jumped down, and there were leaps, and sometimes the notes leaped from one to another with such a range of different notes. Have another listen to a different disjunct melody. Now, just because it's disjunct doesn't mean it's not nice or it's not right. Disjunct melodies are all over the place and that pattern there made perfect musical sense, it sounded good. Now, what I love about disjunct melody is that you can use it to tell a story. When composers are creating a film or a cartoon, they often think a lot about the type of music they're going to create, so that the music reflects what's happening in the story. Have a look at our friends in the image on our screen. What do you think they're doing? That cat looks too excited to see that mouse, doesn't it? And that mouse is doing its best to run away from the cat. I wonder if it's going to eat the mouse or just play with it. Using this picture, why don't we have a go at telling a story about what's happening, using a disjunct melody. Now, for this activity, we're going to improvise, which means we're going to make something up using our voices. I would like you to create a short musical pattern that has a disjunct melody. That means that the notes in your musical pattern do not need to go in order, they do not need to go. They do not need to go, or downwards. They can jump around, okay? And that should represent the jumpiness of this cat. So, I'm going to have a go at improvising a disjunct melody now and then I'd like you to have a go. Are you ready? Let's have a look at this picture again. Have a think in your mind about what they might be doing. And now explain that using music, are you ready? I'll go first. Do you want to join me with my disjunct melody? Off we go. So I created that because I wanted to express the idea that they were having fun, I want to express the idea that that cat is playing with the mouse, not about to scare it. If you want to create something more scary, imagining that they're running around the house and there's things falling over everywhere, why don't you try a disjunct melody that's a bit more messy. Have a go at this one. Copy me. Okay, your turn, I'd like you to pause this video really briefly and have a go at creating some more musical patterns using disjunct melody to represent what's happening between this mouse and cat. For this third activity, I would like you to pause the video. You are going to compose your own melody to a musical story. How else can a disjunct melody be used in the story that we just looked at? Think about what happens next for that cat and the mouse, draw a sketch of what you think might happen next and while you're doing that drawing, sing along, I'd like you to sing a disjunct melody to match the picture. Feel free to rewind this video to listen back to the musical ideas that we put together before in our performing and listening challenge. How did you get on? Imitation

﻿- Hi everyone. I'm Ms. Boyd and I'll be you music teacher today. In this lesson, we are going to learn about imitation. By the end of this lesson you would have learned how to recognise musical imitation, you'll have a go at performing, using imitation and you get the chance to compose, using imitation. But before we get started should we begin with the "Hello Song"? ♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Hello, hello ♪ ♪ It's good to see you ♪ ♪ Hello, hello ♪ ♪ It's good to see you ♪ ♪ I must say ♪ ♪ You've made my day ♪ ♪ Hello, hello, hello ♪ So what is musical imitation? Now, when you watch a film or a cartoon there's always some type of music in there and those musical patterns really help the story to be told. There are different types of musical devices you can use to create a musical story and one of them is imitation. Imitation means copying. Imitation means copying. Do you see what I did there? I imitated myself, I copied. Now this musical device is used all the time to create suspense in a film or a story. It often tells the audience that something's about to happen or something's following something or something's going somewhere. But if you listen really carefully when there is imitation in a musical pattern there's usually just one musical pattern, one tune. But then shortly after something copies that tune, just like this image on our screen. The man is standing at the door and his shadow is copying him. It's not exactly the same but it's copying him. Can you see? The shadow is imitating the man standing. Have a listen to this example of two violins. One is playing the main tune and the other one is copying it, imitating. Listening ears on! Did you hear that? There was one melody one main tune that the violin was playing. The first one that started and then shortly after there was a second violin that copied what the first violin was doing. Let's have a listen again. See if you can pick out that imitation. Kind of sounds like a little sibling, doesn't it? Someone just copying you, all the time! But if used correctly in a musical story, that can have a really good effect on what the audience hear. For our second activity today, let's have a go at performing, using musical imitation. Now for this next activity, we are going to have a go at performing, using musical imitation. It's really easy. It's just copying. So... It's really easy. It's just copying. So, I'm going to sing a well-known nursery rhyme "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and I would like you to imitate me, instead of singing along with me, slightly later and if you like, you can change the notes slightly as well. For example, if I go like this, it's my turn. And I'll sing. ♪ Baa baa black sheep ♪ And when it's your turn you will also copy me but feel free to change the notes just slightly and come in after me. So I would go like this ♪ Baa baa ♪ When it's your turn, I'd like you to copy me ♪ Baa baa ♪ ♪ Black sheep ♪ ♪ Have you ♪ ♪ Any wool ♪ It's going to sound funny at first 'cause we're changing a nursery rhyme but instead of singing the nursery rhyme with me I want you to copy the parts that I sing and sing them slightly differently. If you'd like to change some of the notes around, go ahead. Should we have a go at this musical imitation? Okay. Off we go. You get the opportunity to perform using musical sequences and you get the chance to compose using musical sequences. When you are creating a musical story for a film or a cartoon, there are often loads of different musical patterns. When you are listening to a film or watching a cartoon there's often lots of music used to support the storylines. Those musical tricks are called musical devices. And today, we're going to look at one particular musical device, it's called musical sequence. A sequence just means a pattern, a short pattern that happens over, and over, and over again. And often, it's used as a theme. Something that you can always recognise if you hear it. For our first activity, we are going to listen to a few sequences. See if you recognise this one. ♪ Batman, Batman. ♪ Did you recognise that? That's right. It was the Batman theme tune. There's a reason why it's called the theme tune, because there's a musical sequence that everybody instantly recognises. Do you think you know what it is? If you think you know what that musical pattern is, try and sing it now. That's right. ♪ Doo, doo, doo. Doo, doo, doo. Doo, doo, doo... ♪ Now that pattern is really short. You've only actually got- ♪ Doo, doo, doo, doo. Doo, doo, doo, doo. Doo, doo, doo... ♪ really short pattern but, it's repeated over, and over, and over again, which makes it a sequence. That sequence repeats, and repeats, and repeats. And, you know that something's about to happen and someone's going to pay. And it's always going to be- ♪ Batman. ♪ Have another listen. ♪ Batman, Batman. ♪ Such a great example of a musical sequence. Let's listen to another. Now, some musical sequences have a tiny break in between them. But again, the rules for a musical sequence are that they're short and they're repeated. Have a listen. See if you recognise this one. ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark. ♪ Baby shark! Everyone knows that song. But did you know, that there is a musical sequence in that song? Which is why, we all remember it. ♪ Doo, doo. Doo, doo... ♪ Which part of the Baby Shark song do you think is a musical sequence? That's right. ♪ Doo, doo. Doo, doo. ♪ Such a short pattern- ♪ Doo, doo. Doo, doo. ♪ stays on one note the whole time. ♪ Doo, doo. Doo, doo. ♪ But, it's repeated, and it's repeated, and it's repeated throughout the whole song. And we all know that, that musical sequence means it's time for the Baby Shark song. Let's have another listen again. ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Baby shark. ♪ ♪ Mommy shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Mommy shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Mommy shark, doo, doo... ♪ ♪ Mommy shark. ♪ ♪ Daddy shark, doo, doo... ♪ Such a great musical sequence. Now, for our next activity, we are going to practise performing using a musical sequence. This song is called "Captain Go Sidetrack Your Train". And actually, we're not going to sing the main melody. The musical sequence of this song happens around the main melody. Oh, sing the main melody, so you know how it goes. ♪ Off I go. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ ♪ Number three in line, we're coming in on time. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ Do to have a go at singing that just so you know how the main melody goes. ♪ Off we go. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ ♪ Number three in line, we're coming in on time. ♪ ♪ Captain, go sidetrack your train. ♪ Great job. So, we're actually going to sing the musical sequence that supports this song. And this musical sequence sounds just like a train pulling up into a station. Have a listen. But, when we repeat it throughout the song, it starts to sound like the train is coming in and it really brings the storyline to life. Kind of sounds like the actual train. We are going to have someone else sing this melody and you and I are going to sing this musical sequence. So, a musical sequence is simply just a musical pattern that repeats over, and over, and over again. Just like this colourful paper chain here, or that sequence, or that image of the sequence that I showed you earlier. For your last activity today, I would like you to pause the video to complete a composing challenge. Have a think of another nursery rhyme that might have a musical sequence in it. A short repeated musical pattern. While you're thinking about that, ask an adult to help you make a small paper chain. Each link on that paper chain represents one musical sequence in your song. Now when you listen to a piece of music there are loads of different musical patterns and one of those musical patterns is called a riff, a musical riff. Now musical riffs are really common in pop music. Have a listen to this piece of music to hear what I mean. Did you hear the musical pattern? It went over and over and over again and it was such a short musical pattern. That was it. But that pattern repeats over and over and over again, just like the circles I've put there on our screen. Now, what I love about musical riffs is that they're really catchy. And as you can hear when we listen to that piece of music, it's really, really catchy to hear that. To hear that tune, let's have a listen again. This time, let's see if you can recognise how many times that musical riff happens? Well, just there we heard that musical riff repeat eight times but that wasn't the end of the song. That musical pattern went on and on and on and on. So a musical riff is a really short musical path that's repeated throughout a pop song. Now a musical riff on its own is okay. It's really catchy and everybody recognises it. However, musical riffs often support a melody, a tune. So, we're going to sing a song on top of that 12-bar blues pattern that we just listened to. I'm going to sing the song, just so you know how it goes and then we're going to have a go singing the musical riff and the song and then both together. Now that you understand that musical riff is there to support the tune, let's sing that song, knowing that our musical riff is going to lift us up and make sure that this song is a really catchy pop song. Your song can be about anything you like, maybe even find someone in your home and teach them our musical riff and they can sing the riff and you can sing your song on top. Good luck. Drone

﻿Hi, everyone. I'm Ms. Boyd and I'll be your music teacher today. In this lesson, we are going to learn about a musical drone. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to recognise what a musical drone is. You'll have the opportunity to perform using a musical drone, and you'll get the chance to compose using a musical drone. To prepare for this lesson, all you will need is an exercise book or a piece of paper and a pencil. So what is a musical drone? Now there are lots of different tricks that we can use in music to create different moods and atmospheres, and you can use some of these tricks to tell a musical story. Have you ever heard of a musical drone? A musical drone is one sound that lasts a long time. A musical drone is often used to create a scary atmosphere or bring some suspense to a story, making the audience think that something is about to happen. Have a listen to this musical drone. Whoa! Wasn't that musical drone a bit scary? There was only one note to start with. In that example, the drone was played by a low-pitched string instrument. It started off with just one note didn't it? And then, it started to move in small, tiny steps and then go back. So it went. And it got faster and faster and faster and faster, and we knew didn't we, as we listened to that, we knew something in the story was about to happen. Let's have another listen. So cool. The thing about a musical drone is that it's often played in those low-pitched sounds and it creates such an atmosphere, doesn't it? Have a listen to this next example. I want you to close your eyes this time and listen out for that musical drone. Imagine what is happening. Wow! There were quite a few drones going on there, wasn't there? There was that first one. That was kind of playing by itself for a really long time. When I heard that, I was wondering, what's going to happen next? Were you imagining as you was listening to that? What kind of story did you hear? I did give a clue away didn't I? Have a look at the picture on my screen. This piece of music that we just listened to is from a film that is set in space. That music that you can hear is the beginning of the film. And so when listening to it, the audience automatically know that they're about to go somewhere that no one has ever been before. Have a listen again. What I love about this musical example is that as the music goes on, there's not just one musical drone, there's two, then three, then four, and they're building each other and they get louder, which automatically makes us think something's about to happen. Let's listen to this space them one more time. But this time, I want you to have a go at performing your own musical drone. You need to take a big breath. And then create that low sound and sing that for as long as you can. Because as we heard in that musical example, that drone lasts a long time. Are you ready? Gosh, drones are hard to sing, aren't they? Were you able to sing that really, really, really low sound? No, neither was I. But it was good fun having a go pretending to be a musical drone, wasn't it? Now let's try one more time for fun. So fun. Okay. For this next activity, we're going to create another drone. But this time, our drone is going to represent this guy on the screen. Now sharks have a reputation for being mean and scary. So a musical drone would be a perfect musical device to represent that character. Now, I think you heard the theme earlier, but a very, very, very famous theme that represents a scary shark is this one. Okay, so after three, I'm going to let you a go. I would like you try and perform a musical drone trying to scare us. Would you like to copy me and perform a musical drone? Let's have a go together. My turn, your turn. Are you ready? Off we go. It could be about anything, but you can also take ideas from the two musical stories that we just looked at. The one in space and the one with the shark. I would like you to add a musical drone sound to your story to make it sound really scary and dramatic. Maybe even find someone in your home to perform your composition to. Welcome back.
