In this lesson, we will look at the things plants need to grow. We will learn to plant a seed and you can end the lesson testing our knowledge by following instructions to plant a seed.

To understand what plants need to grow

﻿Hello everybody, Miss Hughes here, what's your name? Great to meet you. You've just caught me watering my plants. They're growing really tall now, but I've had to do a lot to look after them. I've had to water them, check they're in sunlight and give them lots of time. Maybe you can help me, but first let's complete the lesson to understand what plants need to grow. There'll be three lessons on growing. The first with me, the second with Miss Sidenius and the third with Mrs. Garrard. In this lesson, we will listen to a story, learn about what grows, read the instructions to plant a seed, and then you would have a turn of planting a seed. You're going to need a pot. You can use an old yoghourt pot that's been washed if you don't have a plant pot. You're going to need some soil and you're going to need some beans or seeds. Now, I didn't have any beans or seeds when I came to do this, but I was just finished eating an apple and in the apple was a tiny pip. So I'm going to plant the pip. Pause the video here, get what you need and restart when you're ready. Fantastic, let's begin by listening to a story. And this story is called Haul's sunflower. Here are some pictures of sunflowers. What do you notice about them? Tell your screen I noticed that... Great, I noticed that the flowers have yellow petals. They have a big brown centre and they are very tall. Sunflowers can grow so tall that they are taller than us. And sunflowers like to face the sun, so their heads move to face the direction of the sun. Now here is Haul, everyone say, hello Haul. And Haul's got a story she wants to share with us. So get comfortable and we'll begin. This is the story of Haul's sunflower. There was a big competition in Haul's school. Every child was given a pot and sunflower seed and some soil, and they were to take them home and plant on their sunflower seed. So it would be a competition to see who could grow the tallest sunflower in the class. And Haul really wanted to win it. Haul went home feeling really excited. She first filled the pot with soil, then she dug a hole in the soil, dropped in the seed and covered it up. Haul really looked after her sunflower seed. She made sure the pot was in sunlight, she watered it every day and she was really patient. Soon after a green shoot started to grow, it got taller and taller, so Haul moved it to a bigger pot outside so that the sunflower had all of the nutrients that it needed, and all of the sunlight. It was looking beautiful. Haul was super confident, she was going to have the tallest sunflower in the whole class. But one day when she came home from school, she went outside and saw that the pot had mashed everywhere and the sunflower laying tiny pieces on the floor. On her garden walk she saw a cat looking smugly, I bet you pushed my sunflower over, she said, and Haul went to bed sobbing. She couldn't take part in the competition. But Haul's mum had an idea. Why don't you enter all of the other flowers you've grown into the competition? But it is sunflower competition, said Haul not a tulip competition or any other flower. But she thought about it and decided it was her only option. So she took all of her plants to the school and everyone's stopped and told her how beautiful they were. When it was time for the competition, Haul felt a bit sad again because she knew she wouldn't win. It was a sunflower competition and she didn't have a sunflower. But then just after the winner had been read up, Mrs. Broden announced that there would be a special prize for somebody who'd thought really creatively. I was the best gardener in the class. Haul looked up just in time to hear her name being called out, Haul had won a prize because she didn't just grow sunflowers, she grew lots of different flowers. Haul felt super happy that even though she hadn't won the sunflower competition, she'd won something after all. The end, your turn. Well, I'm glad that Haul's beautiful gardening got recognised because she'd worked super hard to look after all of her plants. I wonder if you've grown anything before? Tell your screen if you have. Some of us have and some of us haven't. Well, let's take a look at what plants need to grow. To grow means something gets bigger over time. Growing means something gets bigger over time. And in this lesson, we are learning about plants that grow. Plants that get bigger over time. But what plants grow? Look at the pictures and tell your screen. You might've thought of lots of plants that grow. Trees grow, they start as tiny little saplings and grow taller and bigger. Flowers grow, just like Haul's sunflowers and lots of other types too. Herb's grow and shoots grow and vegetables grow, just like carrots. Some grow underground and some grow overground. Lots of different plants grow just like us, plants are alive so they have certain things that they do to keep alive. Let's have a look at the parts of a type of plant called a flower. I wonder if you can be the parts of a flower with me by copying my actions. At the bottom of the flower, we have the roots, point to the roots. And the roots have a really important job. They need to drink in the water and the nutrients in the soil. Ready, show me roots. They drink in the nutrients and water. And those nutrients and water travel to the rest of the flower through the main body called the stem. Show me stem. The stem takes those water and nutrients all the way out to the leaves. Show me leaves. The leaves take in the sunlight, and the water and nutrients are also carried up to the petals at the top. The pretty colourful part of a flower. Show me petals. Great, so flowers have roots, a stem, leaves and petals. Now, plants need lots of different things to stay alive. And one of the things they need is sunlight. Show me sunlight. Now that means when you plant something, you want to make sure it's got as much sunlight as possible so that it's got the best chance of growing. In my home, the place with the most sunlight is by the window, just like this plant here. The rays from the sun will come into the window and give this plant all the sunshine it needs. Where is the place with the most sunlight in your home? Tell your screen. Some of you said the window like mine, or some of you have a garden or a balcony that gets more sunlight. Plants need sunlight to grow. Now plants also need water to grow. And it's important to water plants so that the roots can take in the water and the nutrients take it in, and pours it to the rest of the flower. Plants need water to grow. And plants need lots of time to grow. Some plants grow quickly, but others need lots of time. Now, they are just some of the things that plants need. You might've thought of some others like nutrients. Plants need lots of things to grow. Pause the video here and tell your screen what a plant needs to grow. Great, now it's our turn to plant a seed. I will do that by following instructions, your turn. Instructions tell us how to do something. They tell us how to do something. I need instructions to plant a seed are on the screen. There's a lot of them, so we're going to break them down. But before we do that, make sure you've got your pot, soil and beans or seeds. Pause here if you need to, to put those in front of you. Great, first, you're going to watch me plant a seed and then it will be your turn. Let's take a look at the first instruction. I'm going to sound it out. So if you've done some reading before you might want to join me. Starting at the left, f-i-l-l, fill, a p-o-t, pot, w-i-t-h, with, s-o-i-l, soil. Fill a pot with soil. And we're going to do it with actions first. Get your pretend plot and fill it up with soil. Count how many spoonfuls it takes you. Great, number one, fill a pot with soil. Let's read on instruction number two. If you want to have a go of reading it, pause the video and have it go on your own, then we'll do it together. Ready, d-r-o-p, drop a s-e-e-d, seed, i-n, in. Drop a seed in. Get your pretend pot and puh, and it goes. Number two, drop a seed in. Number three, pause if you want to read on your own. Tricky word at the start. Put s-o-i-l, soil, o-n, on, t-o-p, top. Put soil on top. So cover your plant with soil. Great job. Three, put soil on top. And finally four, this is a tricky word, water the p-l-a-n-t, plant. Water the plant. So get your watering can, water the plant just a little bit, because too much would drown it. Number four, water the plant. Wow, we've finished planting our seed. But now I need to think carefully about what to do with it. I need to make sure it's got some sunlight. So I'm going to put it on my windowsill. I need to remember to water it and I need to give it time to grow. Great job. Now it's your turn to plant a seed and you will need to get your grown-up to help you with this part. To sequence the stages of a plant growing

﻿Hello Everyone. Welcome back to another lesson with me, Miss Sidenius. Today, I'm really excited to be learning all about how plants grow. I love to grow plants in my garden. But it's not as easy as you might think. So we are going to start today's lesson by looking at the life cycle of a plant. Next, we are going to create a seed mosaic. And finally, we are going to share that seed mosaic with somebody in our household, a teddy, or a toy. In this lesson, you are going to need three things. Some paper, some pens or pencils, and some different seeds and beans. You could even use lentils or pasta as well. Some dry foods, that you can use to make a mosaic. Pause the video here, make sure you've got those things, and come back when you are ready. ♪ Star words, star words, star words. ♪ My turn. ♪ Temperature. ♪ ♪ Temperature. ♪ A temperature, is how hot or how cold something is. We are going to need to learn a little bit more about temperature, when it comes to plants. Now, just like humans, plants start off their life very, very small. In fact, most of them start off as tiny winy winy winy seeds or beans that need to be planted in the ground. Then what happens? So you put the bean or the seed in the ground. You've watered it. You wait a few days. What happens next? Tell your screen. Mmh. I wonder if you know this. Under the ground in the soil, the seed will start to grow roots, which are like, these little bits of string that you can see in the picture. The roots help the plant to stand up in the soil and they take up water from the soil as well. So what happens next? Use the picture on the screen to help you. Tell your screen. That's right. When the roots have all formed underground, soon enough, a tiny shoot will appear out of the soil. Just like the one in the picture. And as that shoot carries on growing, it grows leaves and it gets taller and taller. And you can see that the plant has a stem and the leaves all come off the stem in lots of different directions. The stem is like the stick that holds the plant up and all of the flowers and the leaves grow off the stem. My turn, stem. Good job. And there are the leaves. You can see the arrow pointing to the leaves. Now some plants even get beautiful flowers when they've grown tall enough. The flowers come in all different colours and shapes and sizes. Just like you can see on the screen. Can you think of any flowers that you've seen before? Tell your screen. You might have seen sunflowers like the ones in the picture. You might have seen poppies, like the picture on the left. You might have seen tulips, like the pink flowers that you can see on the screen. You might even have seen daffodils or daisies. So many of you gave me great answers for the different flowers that you've seen. The pollen from these flowers, it used to make seeds. What can you see on the flowers in these pictures? Tell you a screen. That's right. You can see bees. Bees and other insects love to collect the pollen from the flowers. The pollens sticks to the bees and insects and it helps them to spread the pollen around to lots of different areas so that new seeds can grow and new flowers will grow as well. So let's look at what we've learned about the life cycle of a plant so far. Plants starts off as a? Seed. That's right. They start off as a seed and eventually, what grows underground? Roots. Well done. It grows some roots underground to help carry the water up to the rest of the plant. Next, it grows into a? Shoot. Well done. A little shoot pops out of the soil. And that shoot grows taller and taller until it has a? Stem. Well done. With leaves. And when that grows even taller, it becomes a? Flower. That's right. Some plants have flowers on them like this beautiful sunflower. Now, what was it that the bees collect from the plant? The flower has pollen that helps to create more seeds. And the pollen get stuck to the little bees and insects. And so when they carry off the pollen and they land on another flower or in another part of the soil, the pollen can be released and make new seeds. So it starts all over again. It goes round and round in circles. But how do plants grow? Just like humans, there are things that plants need to grow. Looking at the pictures on the screen, can you tell me what some of those things are? That's right. Plants need water, the right temperature and sunlight as well. Some plants like the warm weather and some plants like cold weather. If it's too hot, some plants will die. And if it's too cold, some plants will die as well. All plants need sunlight to grow. The leaves on a plant, use the sunlight and turn it into food for the plant to grow. Just like humans, plants need food to grow as well. And to make that food, they need sunlight. And, with water plants also need to have the right amount of water. They can't have too much, or they will drown and they can't have too little or they will shrivel up and die. Great job, everyone. We've learnt so much about how plants grow and what they need to grow. Now, we are going to have a go at making a mosaic picture using the very things that plants grow from. Seeds or beans. If you don't have enough, you can always use pasta or lentils or some other dry foods instead, just like I have in the pictures here. You can see, that a mosaic is a picture made using lots of different materials that all come together to make a beautiful picture. Here are some examples of some that I've made earlier. And I'm going to show you how you could make a flower mosaic if you like. But you can choose to make whatever you like. So to start off making the mosaic, I'm going to draw the outline of a flower. So I've got the middle part there, and the petals going all around the outside. Always helps to draw the outline first so that you can see where your seeds are going to go. Pause the video here. Draw the outline of your flower, or butterfly, or sun, whatever you would like to make a mosaic off, and come back when you're ready. Great job everyone. Now, we get to start using some of our seeds. You can see I'm just going to pull mine out and spread them around to the outline of my drawing. And I think it's fun to use lots of different seeds or beans for my mosaic. So I'm trying to use lots of different colours, lots of different shapes and sizes. So I'm using beans now, kidney beans for some of my petals. They go around the outside like that. And, now I'm using some lentils, some yellow lentils. So already I've got green, yellow, and a purpley colour as well. Hmm. Where else should I put the yellow lentils? I think I'll do some on that side over there. That's it. So it's already starting to look like a flower now. What am I going to use next? Mmh. Some pasta. So I've got red orangy colour as well now. Look at all those different colours and textures that I had for my mosaic. I've used so many different materials. And now I'm going to use some orange lentils or another one of my petals. And I'm just spreading it out to the edge of my drawing. And I'm going to do the same thing on the other side. There we go. I finished my flower mosaic. Pause the video here, make your mosaic. And come back when you are ready. So now that you've made your lovely mosaic picture, I want you to have a think. Did you use any seeds? What do you think would happen if you planted one of those seeds in some soil? Tell you a screen. If you planted one of your seeds and you watered it, and made sure that it got sunlight, and it was the right temperature, it might just grow into something. How exciting. Well done everyone. Construct a beanstalk

﻿Hi team, lovely to see you back again for this week's construction lesson. And in this week's construction lesson with me Mrs Gerald, we are going to construct a beanstalk. We are going to construct a beanstalk. And to do that, we are going to use lots of different materials, to make a representation of a beanstalk. First, we're going to think about, what does a real beanstalk need to grow? Then we're going to gather our resources to make our beanstalk. We're going to listen carefully to the instructions, then we'll use our hands to create the beanstalk. And then you'll get to share your creation. You can share your creation at home with your family, Maybe even on Twitter. You'll have to ask your adult to help you to do that. How do beanstalks grow? I wonder. I know that you have learned all about beanstalks with Ms.Hughes. You read the story "Jack and the Beanstalk," and you read the story "Jack's Beanstalk." So I'm sure that you already know what a beanstalk needs to grow. Tell the screen if you can remember. There are some clues on the screen to help you. Great job team your right. A beanstalk needs to have the bean that it starts to grow from planted in the soil. The soil gives it the nutrients that it needs to grow. Then it needs to have some sunlight and some water. It might be water from the rain, might be water from somebody like you watering it. And then it needs some time to grow. You have to be really patient to grow a beanstalk. So that's why we are going to make our own beanstalk today. Just like I said, we're not going to wait for our beanstalk to grow from a tiny seed. We're going to make our own beanstalk. You will need some toilet roll tubes, or kitchen roll tubes, some pipe cleaners, a paper plate, some cotton wool, some glue, some masking tape, or cello tape, a hole punch, some scissors, some paint or felt tips and some paper. If you want to build your beanstalk along with me, pause the video now and go and get the resources that you will need. Great job. You gathered all of the things you need. If you haven't got the things to hang now, no big deal. You can watch the video and see how we make a beanstalk. And then you could have a trial yourself. Right now, we're going to watch the video and listen very carefully to the instructions. Oh, can you see? I've found this tube, which is from a kitchen roll, It's quite long. If you don't have a long kitchen roll tube, no big deal. You could use two toilet roll tubes and connect them together with some masking tape. You can decide how tall you want your beanstalk to grow. You want a really tall beanstalk, you could connect more tubes together. Putting the tape on to fix them together. See, well done! Oh, a little bit more just to make sure that it's safely connected. Next I'm going to paint my beanstalk. You've got some green paint and I'm going to paint the cardboard cheap to make it look like the beanstalk. If you don't have any paint, no big deal. There's another way you can make your tube green. You could wrap it in some paper. The paper I'm using is tissue paper. And you see I'm wrapping it up, and then using some tape to secure the end. And then poking the rest of the paper inside the tube. Now my tube is green, just like a beanstalk. Next I'm going to make the leaves for my beanstalk. So I've got a piece of green paper and I'm folding it up, folding it in half, and then folding it again, and again, this is a really great way of making more than one leaf at a time. That way you don't have to do lots of cutting. I'm going to draw the leaf shape on the paper. And then use my scissors very carefully, to cut it out. I'm remembering to put my thumb on the top before I start to chop. I have a little rhyme that helps me remember that. Thumb on top then we chop. You see I'm turning the paper to help me to make the shape of the leaf. Next I'm using the hole punch to make a hole in the leaf. Now I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight leaves, ready to put onto my beanstalk. Now I'm going to use the pipe cleaners to thread the leaves onto, but first I need to attach it to my beanstalk, We're going to bend the end over, and then use a little bit of tape to make keep it in place. It's a little bit tricky, you might need some help from an adult for this. There we go. Now the pipe cleaner is in place. I can thread my leaves onto the pipe cleaner. Use your strong fingers, push them down to the end. How many leaves will I add? One, two, three, four leaves. And now I need to attach the pipe clean at the top. Just like I did for the bottom of bend the pipe cleaner over, just positioning the leaves so they're nice and spread out, bend the pipe cleaner over and fix it with a little bit of tape. A bit tricky to get the tape off. There we go fix it in place. Now I want lots of leaves on my beanstalk. So I'm going to make some more leaves on pipe cleaners and add them. Can you see? I've added some more and there are lots of pipe cleaners and leaves. Now I'm using a plate because in the story "Jack and the Beanstalk," that's beanstalk is so tall. It goes all the way to the clouds. We're going to use the plate and cover it with cotton wool. So it looks like the clouds. Our beanstalk will be so tall It goes all the way to the clouds. I'm using a little bit of masking tape to fix the plate and the tube together. You might need an adult to help you to do that. It's a little bit tricky. There we go. Then I'm going to put some glue on my plate and put some cotton wool on top of the plate and underneath the plate. So it looks like fluffy clouds. I have to pull the cotton wool apart and stick it on. It feels very fluffy. When it's all covered the top, I'm going to start at the bottom, put a little bit more cotton wool on with some glue. It's a bit tricky because it sticks to your fingers if you get glue on them. Now at the top of the beanstalk and "Jack and the Beanstalk," there was a castle that the giant lifted. So now I'm making a castle. I folded a little piece of the paper over, to help it to stick. Now I'm joining the castle on my paper. There are the turrets. Next I'm going to use my scissors to cut the shape of the castle out. Now I'm joining some doors and windows. Now I'm going to carefully cut out my castle, to be careful with the scissors and make sure your fingers are not too close, we don't want to chop off fingers, and you see how I'm cutting the turrets. I'm making two snips, and then folding the paper back to make the turret. Two snips, one, two, and then fold the paper back. One more side to do turrets on this side of the castle. Fold the paper back, now my castle is ready to attach to the fluffy clouds at the top of my beanstalk. I'm going to put some masking tape on the little piece of paper that I folded over. One piece, two pieces just to make sure it's sticks securely, then I'm going to put it on top, and that's my beanstalk. You could make your beanstalk taller if you wanted to, by adding more, cardboard tubes that's the way of making it taller. Here's a picture of my completed beanstalk. Can you see that I've added lots more leaves and it's a super tall beanstalk that goes right up into the clouds, and there's a castle at the top, just like in "Jack and the Beanstalk"? I wonder if you could retell the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk" using your model. Or maybe you'll decide to make up your own story that hasn't been stalk in.
