Introduction - alcohol and tobacco


﻿Welcome to this RSHE PSHE drugs and alcohol lesson. My name is Mr. Duffy. This lesson covers issues about alcohol and tobacco. If this is a sensitive topic to you, we recommend checking with a trusted adult before starting or doing the lesson with a trusted adult. Okay, as I said, we're going to look at alcohol and tobacco today. So in this lesson, you're going to need an exercise book or paper 'cause you are going to need to write some things down, and you will need, of course, a pen or pencil. Hopefully done the intro quiz already. The next thing we're going to look at is what the definition of drugs are, we're then going to move on and look at alcohol and its effects, then tobacco and its effects, and you'll do an exit quiz at the end of the lesson. So let's take a look of some key words then. Alcohol contains a substance called ethanol. This is a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruit, or other sources of sugar. Tobacco contains the highly addictive stimulant alkaloid nicotine as well as harmala alkaloids. Dried tobacco leaves are mainly used for smoking in cigarettes and cigars, as well as pipes and shishas. So let's look at Chelsea, then, let's meet Chelsea. Chelsea struggles with anxiety over school work and home life. She's quite shy and she's easily led by her peers. Chelsea went to a sleepover at her friend's house. Whilst at the park, Chelsea's best friend offered her a cigarette. What advice would you give to Chelsea? Okay, so I'll give you a minute to do that. Pause the video and I'll see you in a second. Fantastic, so let's take a look at the law, first. Okay, so the law clearly states that alcohol consumption in the UK is governed by strict laws, okay? And then if you want further information, please refer to the UK government website, but basically, you are not allowed to consume alcohol anywhere under the age of 18. It is illegal for an adult to buy you alcohol on behalf of someone under the age of 18, and obviously, retailers can refuse the sale of alcohol to an adult if they think they are giving that alcohol to a child. It's illegal for someone under the age of 18 to buy alcohol or attempt to buy alcohol, and it's also legal to be sold as well, okay. It's really important that we understand the law regarding alcohol and tobacco. Okay, so that's the law for alcohol. Let's have a look at the law then for smoking. Now, this has changed in recent years. You now need to be over the age of 18 to buy cigarettes in the UK, and if you are under 16, the police have the right to confiscate your cigarettes. It is illegal for shops to sell you cigarettes if you are under the age of 18, and it is also illegal for an adult to buy you cigarettes if you are also under the age of 18. It is also illegal to smoke with a child in the car. So it's quite interesting, the law on smoking and how it's changed and moved to 18, and it's showing the seriousness of smoking. So let's look at Chelsea again. Obviously, she's under age, obviously, she's with friends at school and in the park, and she's been offered a cigarette, and hopefully you've started to think about the law that actually she's under age and she shouldn't be smoking anyway, 'cause it is illegal. And we'll start to look at now as the lesson progresses into the dangers of alcohol and tobacco smoking. So what is the definition for drugs? If you were asked to define drugs, what would you write down? Pause the screen and I'll see you in a second. So the definition of drugs is a substance that has an effect on the body. Now, we always think about drugs as being things like heroin and cocaine, but it's any drug. We've got drugs for medicines, such as paracetamol, and then obviously, we've got recreational drugs, like the drugs that I mentioned earlier. So medicines are drugs that help people suffering from pain or disease, and recreational drugs are taken by people because they like the effects they have on their body. Okay, so that's the definition of drugs. It is a substance that affects the body. So we can put these types of drugs into two areas. We can put them into what we call depressants or stimulants. So what do you think a stimulant is and a depressant? So write down some ideas, pause the video, and I'll see you in a second. So let's say, let's look at a stimulant, then. So stimulants speed up messages in the brain and along the nerve. This makes you feel more alert. So it is the opposite of a depressant. We'll come onto depressants in a second. So legal stimulants, not all drugs are illegal. Yeah, not all depressants are illegal. We have plenty of legal depressants and legal stimulants. It's just categorises how they affect our body. So stimulants include things like nicotine and caffeine. Obviously, a lot of drinks have caffeine in. Nice picture of a lovely black coffee there. Tea has lots of caffeine as well, as well as these energy drinks all have caffeine because they stimulate us, they make us more alert, they give us more energy, and that's why they increase the heart rate, so our heart rate feels like it's racing, which obviously makes us more alert, and that's why people like to have a drink of coffee or tea or these energy drinks. Illegal stimulants include things like cocaine. They're doing the same sort of thing, they're increasing the heart rate, the mechanism of alert, but they are classed as an illegal stimulant. All stimulants are dangerous. Okay, if you take too much of something, it will eventually become dangerous, and that's why we have these legal and non-legal stimulants or illegal stimulants, because they are more dangerous and highly addictive, okay? So let's take a look at some depressants then. A depressant does the opposite of a stimulant. So a depressant slows down those messages in the brain and along the nerves and actually could make us feel quite lethargic, which means a little bit down, potentially, or a little bit tired. We don't have as much energy, and actually, it can do the total opposite of what a stimulant does. It can make us sometimes feel a little bit low. So a legal depressant is alcohol, okay? Alcohol is actually classed as a depressant and it can make us feel quite quite low. It can make us feel a little bit possibly depressed, but certainly less energised, and illegal depressants, which again, are highly addictive and highly dangerous, heroin or solvents, solvents, things like glue, anything that gives a high for you, if you want to call it that. And unfortunately, some people are addicted to solvents and will take solvents, and again, they are highly addictive. So like I said, we can put them into these two categories. So if you want to pause your screen again, and this time, draw the table out and categorise some substances that you would class as a depressant, and some substances that you would class as a stimulant. Now, I've done two for you there. Done alcohol as a depressant, and I've done stimulant, which we've used as tobacco for this instance. So what would you say, pause again, and see if you can fill out the rest of the table. I'll see you in a second. So alcohol and tobacco are classed as illegal stimulants, is that true, or is that false? It's false. Alcohol and tobacco are legal stimulants and depressants. Obviously, we've identified the alcohol as a depressant and that tobacco is a stimulant. Alcohol is it's classed as a depressant, and nicotine is a stimulant, or tobacco is a stimulant. Although they affect the body, they are legal, but it's really important to understand that although that legal, they still can be dangerous if taken in large quantities. So on your table, I want you to highlight the depressants and stimulants that are legal. Yeah, so if you think back to the table that you did, which ones are legal? Just highlight them in a nice colour, could be green, it could be in yellow, it doesn't matter. Just highlight them so you can see which ones are the legal ones and which ones are the illegal ones. And I'll see you in a second. Fantastic, welcome back. So we'll have a look at the illegal ones. So illegal ones, as we've already said, things like alcohol is legal, tobacco is legal, tea and coffee, they're all legal, okay? The illegal one are things like the heroin, cannabis, cocaine, they're all illegal, okay? And those things are punishable, and you could end up if somebody was, for example, to be caught with those illegal drugs, end up with a prison sentence depending on the class. If it's class A, such as heroin, then that could be seven years in prison. If it is cannabis, then it would in the first instance be a caution, but if you were to keep being caught with it, you could end up with a prison sentence and fine. It's really important to understand that it doesn't matter on the class, really, it is punishable and you can get into trouble for it off the police. Legal, obviously not unless you're over 18. If you're under 18, than they are also punishable, okay? So alcohol is a depressant, then. The alcohol in an alcoholic drink, such as wines, beers, and spirits is called ethanol, and it is a depressant. It slows down signals in the nerves and brain. There are legal limits to the level of alcohol that a driver or pilot can have in their body. It's really important to understand that. For example, somebody driving a car, for example, cannot have two much alcohol in their system, okay? And in fact, it's probably safer not to drink and drive at all. Because it's a depressant, it slows down your reaction times, it can make you sleepy and tired, and in which case, accidents would happen. So it's really important that people who do drink alcohol do so safely. So what are then the short term and longterm effects of alcohol? We've already discussed some short term things like making them tired, reducing their reaction time, but what else can you think of? I'll give you a second to pause the video and I'll see you soon. Fantastic, so let's take a look then at the short and long-term effects of alcohol. Now, you can do this as a lovely table. If you want to pause the video so you can make this table, I'll see you in a second, and then we'll have a look at what we've come up with in a minute. See you soon. Fantastic, so see, these are some of the things that I could think of. Well, you might have some different ones than me, which is absolutely fantastic, and at the end of the lesson, you could share that through our Twitter. So short term effects then include things like sleepiness, talkative, okay, obviously, it is slowing us down, but it can make us lose our inhibitions if you want to call it that, yeah? So we don't really care about certain things and we end up becoming very talkative, and we can take risks as a result of losing those what we call inhibitions. We don't really care about what's going on around us. We're not thinking about other people's feelings. We're not necessarily thinking about what's happening around us. It's just a case of I'm having a good time and I'm going to do something maybe silly and take silly risks that actually could be very, very dangerous. The long-term effects, then, are things like liver damage. Alcohol affects the liver. We can also end up with brain damage, and obviously, alcoholism as well and becoming an alcoholic because alcohol is highly addictive, and some people do struggle with alcohol. So tobacco then, and as we've identified, is a stimulant. So nicotine is the addictive substance in tobacco smokes. It's actually the nicotine that is highly addictive. It creates a dependency so that smoke has become addictive. Now, the reason why tobacco is dangerous, it's because of the carcinogens are substances that cause cancer, and it's tobacco smoke that contains this carcinogen, which includes tar. So it's actually the chemicals within this tobacco smoke that causes the health problems. The nicotine is the bit that's addictive. That means that we can't stop smoking, but it's the actual carcinogens and the tar and the chemicals within the smoke that causes the health issues. So again, let's look at the short and long-term effects of tobacco smoke like we did with alcohol, draw the table out, try and write as many as you can for short term effects or long-term effects. I've done an example for you there. We've got bad breath and we've got strokes. So pause the video and I'll see you in a second. Fantastic, so we're looking at the short term effects and we've got obvious, bad breath. Yeah, we know that cigarettes and nicotine and tobacco smoke smells, and that was one of the first things that we start to notice is someone's bad breath. You can tell if someone's had a cigarette by just smelling that breath, it's quite obvious. And we also have shortness of breath. Obviously, you're inhaling a chemical, you're inhaling something into your lungs, you're going to get a shortness of breath. And the other thing is cost, it's expensive to smoke, and you'll soon know it's the cost, you know, and the lack of money can be very expensive. So along with the short term effect, we have some serious long-term effects as well. Things like strokes, heart disease, and obviously, we've mentioned earlier and the most obvious cancer. Because smoke increases the amount of chemicals within the blood, and obviously, we're increasing the tar, the blood becomes thick, and that's why we can actually have a stroke as a result, and obviously heart disease and cancer as well. So in summary, then, you must be over 18 to buy alcohol. You must be over 18 to smoke. Drugs can be split into two categories, depressants and stimulants, and they essentially are opposite. One slows us down, makes us a little bit more lethargic, Like I said, tired, and the other increases the heart rate and actually makes us more alert. Some depressants and stimulants are illegal, whilst others are illegal, so things like caffeine, tea, coffee, they're legal. Cocaine, heroin are illegal, and there are health implications associated with both alcohol and smoking. We've looked at the short term effects and the long-term effects, and we're going to go into that even into more detail in the next lessons. So thank you for watching. Low risk alcohol consumption


﻿Hi, welcome to RSHE lesson on drugs and alcohol. This lesson does cover issues about alcohol consumption. Like I said today we are going to look at low risk alcohol consumption. I'm Mr. Duffy, I'm really glad you've joined me today. So let's take a look at what you will need for the lesson. You are going to need an exercise book or paper as you will be writing some things down today which will mean you will need a pen or a pencil. So hopefully you've done the intro quiz. We're going to look at what the definition of 'low risk' is. We're going to look at what we mean by units of alcohol and the impact of alcohol on pregnancy. And then you'll do your exit quiz at the end of the lesson. So let's take a look at some key words. So let's remind ourselves then of what alcohol is. So alcohol contains a substance called ethanol which is a type of alcohol produced by fermentation of grains, fruits, or other sources of sugar. Tobacco contains a highly addictive stimulant alkaloid nicotine as well harmala alkaloids. Dried tobacco leaves are mainly used for smoking in cigarettes or cigars but they can be smoked as well as in a pipe or in a shisha. So what do we mean by low risk? Low risk means not likely to result in failure, harm or injury. Low risk alcohol consumption means that by not drinking too much alcohol, you keep your health risks at a low level. So alcohol is safe providing we don't drink in excess. We always talk about quantity, don't we? We talk about having things in moderation and that's the same for alcohol. As long as we drink at a low level and don't drink too much and we're not excessive with drinking, we can keep our risks at a low level. So what does the term unit mean when discussing alcohol consumption? Pause the video, write something down and I'll see you in a second. So units of alcohol are a simple way of expressing the quantity of pure alcohol within an alcoholic drink. So one unit equals 10 mil of 8 gramme or 8 grammes of pure alcohol. Which is around the amount of alcohol an average person or an average adult can process within an hour. And it does vary and it varies dependent on the person, doesn't it vary on the height, their weight, et cetera. This means that within an hour, they should be in theory little or no alcohol left in the blood of an adult. Although, as I said, this will vary from person to person. So what I want you to do, is pause the video and I want you to guess the number of units in the following drinks. So we've got here at pint of 5.2 strong beer, a large glass of white wine, a 300 mil bottle of lager and 125 mil glass of Prosecco. So pause the video and guess the number of units and I'll see you in a sec. Brilliant. So let's have a look then at the number of units. So in that large pint of beer, there are 3 units. There are 3 units as well in a large glass of white wine. So they have exactly the same. There are 1.7 units in a bottle of beer, a 300 mil bottle of beer. So not as much as the pint of beer but there is less liquid, less alcohol, less of a drink in the bottle cause it's smaller. Pints are bigger. And there is 1.5 units of alcohol in the 125 mil glass of Prosecco. Okay. So it's quite, quite a lot already considering the bottle based 300 ml and only 1.7 in, in, in the 1.25mil. Prosecco was 1.5. So to keep health risks from alcohol to a low level, what are the recommended number of units for a man and a woman? So considering all those drinks that you've seen there, how much is someone allowed to have and be classed as at low risk? Adding up the number of units. Pause the video, I'll see you in a second. So the NHS recommends that men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis. So 14 units is roughly 4 large glasses of wine or 4 large glasses of beer, strong beer and that will bring you to 12. Okay, so you might be able to have a small glass of Prosecco as well. 14 units is equivalent to 6 pints of average strength beer or 10 small glasses of low strength wine. And obviously it's important certainly for an adult to sort of understand how many units are in their alcohol or in their drinks to ensure that they are staying within the low risk category. And obviously looking at the amount of units in a pint of beer is not a huge amount of alcohol. So is it absolutely safe then to while pregnant? Is that true or false? Pause the video, have a think and I'll see you in a second. It says false. Experts are still unsure exactly how much if any alcohol is actually completely safe to drink while pregnant. And so the safest approach and the NHS simply say, "do not drink while pregnant. We just don't know how much alcohol is safe. So the safest thing to do is not to drink at all." One thing that we do know is that alcohol does have an impact on an unborn baby. So there is a higher risk of miscarriage. There is a higher risk of premature birth. Premature birth means being born too early. There is an increased risk of a lower birth weight. There's an increased risk of learning difficulties after the child has been born. There is an increased risk of behaviour problems and there is an increased risk of something that's called foetal alcohol syndrome. So when a mother drinks alcohol, that alcohol passes from her blood through the placenta and onto and into her unborn baby. A baby's liver is one of the last organs to develop and does not mature until the latest stages of pregnancy. So a baby cannot process alcohol as well as an adult can and too much exposure to alcohol can seriously affect their development. What they have found through research, that drinking alcohol especially in the first three months, so you're looking at the what? The first 12 weeks of pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and your baby having a low birth weight. So the baby could have quite a low birth weight and that's that's actually can be quite dangerous because they they are unable to fight infection, they are unable to take our milk particularly when they are born. Drinking after the first three months of pregnancy could affect a baby after they were born. So these risks are greater the more someone drinks. The effects include; learning difficulties and behavioural problems. So obviously they will have problems at school. Drinking heavily throughout pregnancy can cause a baby to develop a serious condition called foetal alcohol syndrome. Okay. So drinking while pregnancy can be extremely dangerous. Obviously it's linked to how much somebody is to drink while pregnant but nonetheless, we simply do not understand how much alcohol has these impacts on an unborn baby and as I said earlier, the safest thing to do is not to drink at all and that is what the NHS is recommending. So what would you advise then? So Joseph has an older sister. Okay. Who is pregnant. Okay. She's over 12 weeks. She's had her first 12 weeks scan and she's told everyone the happy news that she's pregnant, but she has got a wedding to go to. And she's wondering if, can I have a drink, can I have one drink? Is one drink going to be okay? But having just learned about alcohol and pregnancy in school, what would you advise? Okay. What would you advise considering the information that we've just talked about, considering those risks. I want you to write a letter to Joseph so that he can explain to his sister what he thinks she should do. Alcohol: short term and long health risks


﻿Welcome to this RSHE lesson, and my name's Mr. Duffy, and we're going to look at drugs and alcohol, this lesson does cover issues about the effects of alcohol. If this is a sensitive topic to you, we recommend checking with a trusted adult before starting or doing the lesson with a trusted adult nearby. Like I said, I'm Mr Duffy we are going to look at the short term and longterm health effects of alcohol. So you are going to need to write some things down today. So please make sure you've got an exercise book or paper and obviously you're going to need a pen or pencil. Hopefully you've done your quiz, we're going to look at behaviour drinking and risky behaviours of binge drinking and risky behaviour. We're going to look at alcohol poisoning, alcohol misuse, and serious illness, and you'll do the exit quiz at the end of the lesson. So let's take a look at some key words. So binge drinking usually refers to drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time or drinking to get drunk. And alcohol poisoning, this is a serious and sometimes deadly consequences of drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. So let's just remind ourselves of the laws really important that you understand that you are not allowed to consume alcohol under 18 anywhere, and it is illegal for somebody to buy you alcohol or attempt to buy you alcohol if you are under the age of 18 and for someone under 18 to buy alcohol or attempt to buy alcohol ought to be sold alcohol. So essentially you need to be over the age of 18 to consume or purchase alcohol. So what I want you to do now is pause the video, and I want you to think about the short and long-term effects of alcohol. I've done a little example for you there so sleepiness and liver damage, can you think of any others? So draw the table out and I'll see you soon. So the short term effects can include sleepiness, talkative and risk-taking. So somebody can become quite sleepy because as we know it is a depressant, so it makes you more sleepy, tired but you do start to lose your inhibitions. And that's why you start to become quite talkative, and as a result, you can start taking risks. The long-term effects include liver damage, brain damage and obviously becoming an alcoholic. 'Cause alcohol is highly addictive. So what happens when I drink alcohol? What happens when an adult drinks alcohol? After you swallow an alcoholic drink about 25% of the alcohol exec is absorbed straight from your stomach into the blood stream. The rest is mostly absorbed from your small bowel. Once alcohol has entered your bloodstream, it remains in your body until it is processed. About 90 to 98% of the alcohol that you drink is broken down in your liver, and that's why we can have liver damage if you drink excess, if you drink in excess, the liver is having to work even harder to break down the alcohol. The other two to 10%, of alcohol is removed in your urine. Breathe out through your lungs or excreted in your sweat. Now how much is absorbed into your body or how quickly is dependent on the amount of alcohol within the drink, so the higher concentrations of alcoholics is absorbed quicker. And also a carbonated alcoholic drinks. Things like Prosecco is also absorbed into the bloodstream much quicker. So what is binge drinking? And I want you to pause the video, and I'll see you in a second, right? So write this down, see you soon. So binge drinking then, so this is what the NHS defines binge drinking as, "drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time or drinking to get drunk". The definition used by the office for national statistics for binge drinking is having over eight units in a single session for men and over six units for a female for a woman. Now, if you think back to the last lesson when we looked at units, it's having roughly three large or strong pints of beer, so a large glass of white wine of three strong pints of beer for a month, and having on average roughly two large glasses of white wine for a female. So binge drinking is having an excess of that, having more than that. So drinking too much or too quickly does cause risky behaviour and the thought sorts of things, more likely to happen when people drink too much or too quickly on a single session include accidents resulting in injury. Misjudging risky situations or losing self-control. So why is binge drinking dangerous thing considering the risks, considering the health implications. Why is binge drinking dangerous? Pause the video, and write some ideas down on your paper and I'll see you in a second. So the dangers of binge drinking then is that your body can only process one units of alcohol per hour. So if you think if you were to have a large glass of white wine, so if you're not to had a large glass of white wine it would take three hours for that alcohol to leave an adult's system. So drinking six units of alcohol in a short space of time let's say an hour, will raise the blood alcohol concentration, and could make someone drunk very, very quickly. If you think it's going to take one hour for each unit to leave the body. So in that sense if they were to drink two glasses of a large glass of white wine, in theory, it is going to take six hours. But if they've drank those two glasses in one hour they are putting themselves at risk for becoming extremely drunk very, very quickly. And that's when we start to see the risky types of behaviour. So what is alcohol poisoning? I mentioned alcohol poisoning and according to NHS alcohol poisoning occurs when a person drinks a toxic amount of alcohol usually over a short period of time. And that's what I was saying, that it wasn't 18 units roughly, yeah in what four hours is just a huge amount of alcohol. Being poisoned by alcohol can damage your health or even put your life in danger. So the signs and symptoms then can be confusion, severely slurred speech, loss of coordination, vomiting some of the things that I was mentioning earlier especially with loss of coordination falling over easily you could fall into something, you can bang your head yeah all these things can and do happen when someone drinks alcohol in a short space of time. Irregular or slow breathing, obviously breathing difficulties, pale or blue-tinged skin caused by low body temperature, so one of the things you in a park if your overnight and you know, it's going to be cold, even if sober is still going to be cold. And you put yourself at risk of hypothermia because actually your body temperature does reduce when drinking alcohol. And being conscious but unresponsive and passing out and being unconscious, passing out, falling asleep, it's really dangerous, particularly because of the vomiting. Yeah you know somebody could choke on their own vomit from drinking too much and passing out. So the dangers of alcohol poisoning if a person is poisoned by alcohol, they could stop breathing, they could have a heart attack, they could die by choking on their own vomit, becomes severely dehydrated which can cause permanent brain damage in extreme cases, develop more severe hypothermia, as I said, drinking on an evening, drinking out particularly in sober you know, particularly adults that might go to bar guard and have you know sweat shorts and t-shirt, and then suddenly by eight, nine 10 o'clock at night still sits outside and are now starting to get the effects of hypothermia, and as a result of all these things they can have fits or seizures, as a result of lower blood sugar levels. So what we'll need to do now, you've digested quite a lot of information there. But what I want you to do now is pause the video, and I want you to decide what is not a sign and symptom of alcohol poisoning. So pause the video, have a breather, digest that information, and I'll see you in a second. So being happy is not a sign or symptom of alcohol poisoning, although it is a short term effect of alcohol becoming happy it's not an effect of alcohol poisoning, however, it's the early signs of someone becoming intoxicated. So alcohol misuse that so we've talked about binge drinking. If somebody was to binge drink regularly, they would be in this category of alcohol misuse. And this is when you drink in a way that's harmful or when you're dependent on alcohol. So they can't give it up, they find it really difficult to stop drinking alcohol, to keep health risks from alcohol it's a low level both men and women are advised not to regularly drink more than 14 units in a week. But people who misuse alcohol and drinking both the recommended daily and weekly alcohol intake guidance, so the longterm effects then a persistent alcohol misuse increases someone's risk of serious health conditions, and this can include heart disease, strokes liver disease, liver cancer, bowel cancer, and the reason for those ones particularly is as I said earlier, the liver and the bowels are working over time to break down the alcohol okay. And if someone's drinking in excess regularly the liver and bowels are going to become damaged. Alcohol can cause as well mouth cancer, alcohol, obviously with the ethanol, is going to damage cells within the mouth and excessive drinking could cause mouth cancer, breast cancer as well, and pancreatitis.

Now we are going to complete a mind-map task. Copy the mind map outline, try to add two examples to each section of the mind map. For the alcohol poisoning section, I've given you the example of a heart attack.

So there is some help and advice out there, and, these organisations websites can provide further information, the NSPCC, Youngminds and Drinkaware these three websites are brilliant. This lesson will look at the mental health problems associated with alcohol and alcohol misuse

Alcohol: psychological risks 


﻿Welcome to RSHE, PSHE lesson on drugs and alcohol. My name's Mr. Duffy, we are going to look at the psychological risks associated with alcohol. This lesson covers issues about psychological risks of alcohol. If this is a sensitive topic to you, we recommend checking with a trusted adult before starting or doing the lesson, or do the lesson with a trusted adult nearby. So in this lesson you will need an exercise book or paper 'cause you will need to write some things down, in which case you will need a pen or a pencil. Hopefully you've done your intro quiz. We are going to look at mood changes associated with alcohol. Going to look at links to mental health and permanent brain damage. And at the end of the lesson, you'll do your exit quiz. So let's have a look at some key words. So dementia, this is the loss of cognitive functioning, thinking, remembering and reasoning, and behavioural abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities. We will talk about dementia later on in the lesson. So let's just remind ourselves of the law then. So it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 to consume alcohol. It's illegal for someone to purchase alcohol if they are under the age of 18. And it is also illegal for someone to purchase alcohol for somebody else if they are under the age of 18. So let's have a look at the alcohol and mood changes. Alcohol affects people differently depending on how much and how long you've been drinking. Regardless of the mood we're in, with increasing alcohol consumption it's possible that negative emotions will take over. So we've mentioned negative emotions. Please pause the video for a second and make a list of any negative emotions you can identify. Thank you. Here are some possible answers, anger, aggression and sadness. So alcohol and our mental health. Regular, heavy drinking, we're now talking about in excess of the daily recommended units of alcohol or the weekly recommended units of alcohol, interferes with chemicals in the brain that are vital for good mental health. It causes an imbalance. So while we might feel relaxed after a drink, in the long run alcohol has an impact on our mental health and can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety, or make stress harder to deal with. So pause the video again, and what I want you to think about is that John and his friends regularly drink. And they regularly drink alcohol over the weekend in excess of recommended daily allowances. Having learned about alcohol and mental health at school, what advice would you give to John about the short-term effects of alcohol on his mental health? So pause the video, and I'll see you in a second. The short-term effects are things like stress and anxiety. He's going to become stressed. He's going to become more anxious. We've got things like where he's one minute really happy and quite hyperactive and quite jovial and the next minute he could be quite down, quite depressed. Again, expose that anxiety. Confusion, might start to become a little bit paranoid about what people are saying and think it's aimed at him and that's where the confrontation, the conflict can occur. When we start thinking about the long-term effects we start thinking about brain damage. Long-term alcohol misuse can cause alcohol related brain damage, or ARBD. It is caused by a person regularly drinking too much alcohol or binge drinking over several years. And when we talk about dementia, as our key word, this is what we're talking about. There are different types of ARBD. People who get alcohol related brain damage are generally aged between about 40 and 50, and that's because they've been drinking for a long time. They've been drinking in excess for a prolonged period of time, and as a result the brain has become so damaged by the time they get to about 40 or 50 they're now suffering from alcohol related brain damage. There's a thing called alcohol-related dementia, and this is what we're talking about where they can't remember certain things. It's a type of alcohol-related brain damage. If a person has alcohol-related dementia they will struggle with day-to-day tasks. This is because of the damage to their brain caused by regular drinking. The person may have memory loss and difficulty thinking things through. So they won't be able to process the information and then be able to do something and what we would do in a logical manner. They would get confused. They would have memory loss as well, so they might not remember certain things, and in which case, they become extremely confused and that can cause real anxiety. They may have problems with more complex tasks such as managing their finances. They might not realise how much money they're spending. They might not remember what they spent their money on. They might not remember actually physically going to the shops. And this can affect their finances 'cause they're not on top of it. They're not thinking about how much is coming in and how much is going out. The symptoms may cause problems with daily life. For example, the person may no longer be able to cook a meal. They may simply not be able to remember how to turn the oven on or where it is, or what to do. That logical process of step-by-step cooking is gone. The bits of information and no longer there. And this can obviously cause serious anxiety, depression, not understanding the world that is around them. There's another syndrome called Wernicke-Korsakoff's Syndrome, or WKS, and this is the most serious form of ARBD. This is a syndrome that damages the brain in a specific way. Alcohol prevents the body from getting enough thiamine, which is vitamin B1, which is vital for brain cells to work properly. So what they're actually doing is alcohol is stopping these brain cells from working properly and are damaging the brain cells. The lack of vitamin B1 can have a severe and long lasting effect on the brain. About a quarter of people with this syndrome who get treatment do make a good recovery. It's about 25%. About half will make a partial recovery and still need support to manage their lives. So the ones who are making a full recovery is quite small. About a quarter of people with the condition make no recovery and may need long-term care in specialist residential care home. They simply cannot look after themselves because of drinking excessively over a long time. So what I want you to do now is pause the video, digest the information that you've received. And I want you to write down what the symptoms are for the two ARBD related brain diseases, okay. Pause the video and I'll see you in a second. So alcohol-related dementia. We have cognitive memory problems such as memory loss, difficulty with familiar tasks and depression. So those are some of the symptoms and the physical problems such as damage to the liver, stomach, and pancreas and poor temperature control. Now the issue with poor temperature control is that they could and quite easily suffer from hypothermia. So let's consider this task. Having learned about alcohol and mental health, what advice would you give to someone about the short-term effects of alcohol on their mental health? Please pause the video and jot down your ideas. Harmful effects of tobacco

This lesson covers issues about the harmful effects of tobacco. Hopefully you've done your intro quiz. We then going to look at the types of tobacco use, vaping and e-cigarettes, tobacco and its effects and your exit quiz at the end of the lesson. So, let's take a look at some key words there. An e-cigarette is an electronic device that stimulates tobacco smoking and tobacco contains the highly addictive stimulant nicotine, as well as harmala. Dry tobacco leaves are mainly used for smoking cigarettes and cigars as well as pipes and Shishas. So, let's take a look at the law to remind ourselves. You must be over 18 to buy cigarettes in the UK. If you are under 16 the police have the right to confiscate your cigarettes. It is illegal for shops to sell you cigarettes if you are under the age of 18 and it's also illegal for an adult to buy you cigarettes if you are under the age of 18. Finally, it's also illegal to smoke in a car with a child and a child is a person who is under the age of 18. So, let's talk about tobacco uses. Most people smoke tobacco in a cigarette. Cigarettes can be manufactured or hand-rolled using rolling tobacco. Shisha is a flavoured tobacco that is smoked using a water pipe. Other types of tobacco include cigars, cigar rolls and chewing tobacco. So, do e-cigarettes contain nicotine? Is that true or false? Do e-cigarettes contain nicotine? It is true. Most e-cigarettes do contain nicotine. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development which continues into the early to mid-twenties. E-cigarettes can contain other harmful substances besides nicotine. And it is these chemicals that we're just not sure how dangerous they are on health. So, vaping is the inhaling of a vapour created by an electronic cigarette or vaping device. E-cigarettes are battery powered smoking devices. They have cartridges filled with the liquid that usually contain nicotine flavourings and chemicals. The liquid is heated to a vapour, which the person inhales that's why e-cigarettes is called vaping. So, why are e-cigarettes dangerous then if it contains nicotine, but none of the other harmful chemicals that smoking contains? why are e-cigarettes dangerous? Well, it's those other chemicals, those toxins are poisons which we just don't know how they affect the body. They are highly addictive and because it contains all those other chemicals, someone's smoking them over a prolonged period of time because they are addicted, could have health implications and that's why they are dangerous. And obviously like I said they contain nicotine which is dangerous in itself. So, Chelsea has friends that liked to smoke an e-cigarette they offer Chelsea one to try. What would your advice be to Chelsea? Pause the video and I'll see in a second. Welcome back, so my advice to Chelsea would be that essentially is not to try it because it's highly addictive. It's likely that if Chelsea was to try it, well she may enjoy it, in which case her body would want more and more or certainly her brain would want more and more because she likes the effects of the nicotine. That potentially would mean that she becomes addicted. So, first and foremost, my advice would be, they are highly addictive. My other piece of advice would be that because of the chemicals and the toxins within an e-cigarette we don't actually know what the health implications are. So, we're not sure what the health implications would be on Chelsea. So my advice that will be there's other chemicals in them, it could harm your health. So, it's really important that she understands this information so that she can make an informed decision. But my advice to her would be not to smoke it. So smoking then so different to an e-cigarette, which is a chemical though containing nicotine, but vaping we're going to look at smoking using a cigarette. Now this is very harmful to health. We know this. It is estimated that nearly one in every five deaths of people aged over 35 in England are connected to smoking. Tobacco smoke contains many harmful substances and these include tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. So, the effects then. So tar causes cancer of the lungs, mouth and throat. It coats inside of the lungs including the alveoli causing coughing . It damages the alveoli making it more difficult for gases exchange to happen. What this means is, that it's harder for the body to exhale carbon monoxide. So we inhale oxygen and we exhale carbon monoxide but because the gas exchange is more difficult, more of the carbon monoxide remains in the body and it's harder to get the oxygen into the body. So smoke, so the cells in the lining of the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, so the trachea down into the lungs, into the bronchi and bronchioles which is the air pockets within your lungs produce a sticky mucus. This traps dirt and microbes. Cells with tiny hair-like parts called cilia then move the mucus out of the lungs. However, the hot smoke and the tar from smoking damages this cilia, and as a result of that, smokers that have to cough to move the mucus and are more likely to get bronchitis. Now the nicotine as we've identified is highly addictive. However, it is also highly dangerous to the public. And this is because it increases heart rate and blood pressure by making the blood vessels narrower than normal. And if you think, if you've got a big pipe and you're sending something through it you want that pipe to be nice and big 'cause it's easier to get through, isn't it? what if that pipe was made a lot smaller just like your blood vessels, then obviously it's going to be harder for that blood to travel through it and this can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Carbon monoxide is a gas. When that takes the place of oxygen in the red blood cells. Now we need oxygen, don't we? We need oxygen to go as far work in muscles to supply that lovely nutrients, so that we can move and go about our normal diet for playing sports so that our muscles don't tyre, but carbon monoxide replaces this, it replaces all that nice oxygen. This reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. That means that daily life becomes harder because there's less oxygen breathing becomes heavier because they trying to get the oxygen into the bodies. It means that the circulatory system so the circulatory system, hearts and lungs are having to work together a lot harder calls in potential, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. So it's really important to understand that carbon monoxide is actually replacing oxygen. So, Chelsea's mum is a smoker, okay? She wants you to help her write a letter to her mum explaining the harmful effects of smoking because you have learned about it at school. Can you write a letter for Chelsea that she can give to her mom so she can give her some really good advice as to why her mom should maybe stop smoking. Or at least the harmful effects that smoking is having on Chelsea's mom. Off we go, pause the video and I'll see you soon. Stopping smoking

So you can hopefully you've done your intro quiz. We're going to look at benefits of stopping smoking, where to seek help and advice and you'll do your exit quiz at the end of the lesson. So let's take a look at some key words then. So prevention, the action of stopping something from happening or arising and withdrawal, the combination of physical and mental effects that a person experiences after they stopped using or reduce their intake of a substance such as nicotine. So let's just remind ourselves of the law then. You must be over 18 to buy cigarettes in the UK. If you are under 16, the police have the right to confiscate your cigarettes. It is illegal for shops to sell you cigarettes, if you are under age. But for an adult to buy you cigarettes if you are under 18 and it is also illegal to smoke in the car with a child and a child is classified as someone who is under the age of 18. So why should people stop smoking? Pause the video, write some ideas down. I'll see you in a second. So lets remind ourselves of the effects of tobacco. And this is really why people need to stop smoking. If you remember back to other lessons, we've looked at the reasons and the health problems associated with smoking. So tar causes cancer of the lungs, mouth and throat. It coats inside of the lungs including the alveoli causing coughing. It damages the alveoli making it more difficult for gaseous exchange to happen. What that means is that the body can't absorb all the oxygen nor can it exhale all the carbon monoxide. Smoke, cells in the lining of the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles produces sticky mucus. This is within the lungs, the bronchiolar and the bronchioles are all within the lungs. It's the air pockets that store your oxygen. And it unfortunately, produces what we call a sticky mucus. This traps dirt and microbes. Cells with tiny hair-like particles called cilia, then move the mucus out of the lungs. However, the hot smoke and tar actually damages this cilia. And as a result, this smokers cough to move mucus and more likely to get bronchitis. So nicotine is, as we know, highly addictive. However, it also causes blood vessels to narrow. What that means is if you imagine a big pipe with a liquid going through it. If we want that liquid to pass freely without any problems, we want that pipe to be quite big. Well, what nicotine does is, it actually makes those narrow increases and now increases the blood pressure and heart rate because it's working even harder to get the liquid through it. The liquid is your blood. Because it has to work harder and it's really struggling to get through your blood vessels, it can cause heart disease. Primarily heart attack and stroke. Carbon monoxide is a gas that takes place that takes the place of oxygen. So as I said with the gas exchange with tar, this can't take place. Unfortunately, within the red blood cells, there's more carbon monoxide than oxygen and obvious as we know we need oxygen to function. It means that the circulatory system is having to work even harder. So as I said, the heart is having to work really hard to push and force the blood through the blood vessels. In which case, this then causes heart attack or a stroke. So knowing the effects of smoke. What do you think the benefits to stop in smoke are? Pause the video and write some ideas down and I'll see you in a minute. So what I want you to do is, now you've got your ideas, pause the video again and put the benefits in the left-hand column and write a brief description of why that benefit is important. So pause the video again. I'll see you soon. So here's some ideas for you then. So stopping smoking lets you breathe more easily. Of course it does. We know that tar causes a blockage within the lungs. And we know that the nicotine causes the blood vessels to shrink and become smaller making it harder. We know that carbon monoxide stays within the body because that gas exchange can't take place because of the tar. So people breathe more easily and cough less, when they give up smoking. Because their lung capacity improves by up to 10% within nine months. It's absolutely amazing. And we know just from stopping that literally within 48 hours improvements are made, but within breathing up to nine months. After nine months, you've got 10% more lung capacity which is absolutely brilliant. Stopping smoking gives you more energy within two to 12 weeks of stopping smoking, your blood circulation improves. This makes all physical activity including walking and running much easier. As you know, we need oxygen and nutrients to be supplied to our work in muscles. Our work in muscles then don't fatigue or get tired as quickly and therefore, we're fit to do whatever the activity may well be. So we might be fit enough to go to the shops, fit enough to do some gardening or from a sports point of view, fit enough to last 90 minutes during a football match. Stopping smoking improve, smell and taste. When you stop smoking, your senses of smell and taste gets a big boost. You may notice that food tastes and smells different as your mouth and nose recover from being dulled by the hundreds of toxic chemicals found in cigarettes. So those toxic chemicals obviously, it's the first thing that generally the smoke touches, is the mouth and it does affect the senses of smell and the taste buds on the top. And as a result, literally within a few hours, a few days, that tastes and smells starts to return. So now that we know what the effects of smoke are, now we know why it's important to stop. Where can someone go to help them to stop smoking? Pause the video so my day is now and I'll see you soon. So how can advise? The first thing to do if someone wants to stop smoking, is that they need to go see their GP or their doctor. Okay. So the first piece of advice if anybody says, well, I'm thinking of stopping smoking. My first piece of advice is go and see your GP because they will help. They'll put them in touch with all the services that can help. So they might join a local stop smoking service. We can download the free NHS stop smoking app, have an emergency phone number to hand, much really important that's really useful. When a smoker tries to stop smoking and they join that stop smoking services, they can buddy up or make friends with people who are in a similar situation. And what that means is, they can support each other when times are difficult. And they're thinking, I need a cigarette because the brain essentially, is craving that nicotine. When does that issue of relapse and think it and not solve withdrawal, that's why you need that support. And having that emergency phone number best friend who is in exactly the same situation as them. That's where that could be really part of just texts. It's actually, one of the things is it's basically giving them something to do other than and refocusing the brain on a different activity or other than smoking. But having that conversation is really helpful. And also consider using a nicotine content in product. This could include an e-cigarette. Now we've identified the dangers of an e-cigarette. However, the thing with an e-cigarette over smoking is that you can reduce the dose. And that's the idea of an e-cigarette. It's not just to smoke it and replace the tobacco of the price. The smoking element from a cigarette is actually to help you reduce. And over about eight to 12 weeks, you wean yourself off it. And then by sort of eight, 12 weeks, you're pretty much not using it anymore. They all need to last for about three months really. And that's the idea with those nicotine-containing products. Like I said, it can be an e-cigarette could be parched, chewing gum just something just to wean them off slowly. So kind of e-cigarettes help you quit. So if someone's a smoke you know someone's smoking. Can an e-cigarette help them? Is that true or false? Of course its true. Like I said, it's the idea is that it's helping them wean them off it. So an e-cigarette is far less harmful because they're not using it over hopefully over a long time about eight to 12 weeks hopefully. And the idea is that over a few days, over a few weeks they just reduce the amount of nicotine that they're having. So eventually, it's at zero and then in which case they no longer need the e-cigarette. So yes, it can help them quit. So nicotine-containing products like I've mentioned, are patches. Okay, but like the one in the picture here and it's known as nicotine replacement therapy and this can double someone's chances of success. As well as the patches, there are tablets, lozenges, gums and nasal spray. And if you like holding a cigarette, there are handheld products like an inhaler or e-cigarette. So if someone lies holding a cigarette, someone some people will actually enjoy the feeling of holding a cigarette and actually physically smoking. In which case the patches in nicotine and the gumbo necessarily work for them. But using an e-cigarette will help with that because one, it stops that sort of almost kind of dependency on physically smoking. But one of the things with these nicotine replacement therapy treatments is that it's bespoke to the individual. Okay, so it's bespoke to the person specifically for them. What they enjoy, what the don't like and products and things are tailored to that person because that's going to give them the ultimate chance of success. So the top 10 tips then that I would recommend to anybody who's thinking of stopping smoking, is think positive. Cleaning pulse be really positive, isn't it? Yeah, I'm going to be able to do this, make a plan. Sometimes a lot of people tend to give up because there's not plan really . It's well, I'll do this, I'll do that and not really a stick to a rigid plan as it is. I'm going to reduce my dose every week. I'm going to reduce it by. Yeah, they need to have a clear plan. Consider diet, diet's really important. The healthy diet, the more energy they'll getting from that diet, the more energised they're going to fail, the more positive they're going to fail. And hopefully that will help as well. Change your drinks. What the what smokers tend to find is that if that drink it particularly alcohol, which is that those inhibitions, and they're, I'll just have a safe route stop wall, and it doesn't matter, but that's not going to help. So changing their diet, changing what the drink will make a massive difference. Identify when the craving starts. What smokers will be able to do is go well, actually when I'm stressed, I find it really difficult. I tend to want a cigarette. You can try and reduce the stress, manage their workload, manage their life a little bit more in a healthy way. Hopefully those cravings are identified and that's when they could maybe do something different to try retread those habits. Get some smoking support. As I said, join a local smoking support group, get moving, get active, get physically active increases energy releases endorphins, our feel good chemical. Getting on non-smoking friends. It really pop for a smoker. If they were round smoking in they were around other people who smoke, if you're trying to stop that commitment very difficult. And actually sometimes it's helpful particularly people, adults working in an office and maybe they've got a friend who smokes and they've got up that cigarette break together, is actually stop to gather. Its rather than having the cigarette break, I'd have a walk. Keep the hands and mouth busy. As I said, some people like the feeling of smoking like having a cigarette in the hand. So try and do something else, make a list of reasons to put why, make why am I going to quit? There needs to be something that you can when you're thinking trying to be positive? We think I'm just going to have one. What are the reasons it's because you know I've got grandchildren or my daughter's getting married or whatever or any of these reasons are really important. So thinking about those top 10 tips, thinking about the effects of smoking and the dangers of smoking. Chelsea's mum is a smoker and she doesn't know if she wants to quit. So she don't really, she kind of I'm smoking too many hours on the day with quitting rarely. As and part of the issue, she doesn't really know how to she's on and I realised about it and it needs to stop. I'm not really sure how to. We need to write a letter to Chelsea's mum explaining the benefits of quitting and how she could go about doing it. So that might include the top 10 tips and also maybe some of the services that are out there to help her. So pause the video, and write your letter and I'll see you soon. So what tips would you give to someone to help them to stop smoking? Fantastic. I hope you got some really good ideas that have obviously those top 10 tips are, absolutely fantastic. Think positive and getting the person to really have a reason to stop smoking and then coming up with that plan of how they actually go to stop smoking.
