In today's lesson, you will understand what a community is, explore the different types of communities (place, interest, action and practice) and consider the benefits of being a part of one.

﻿Hi everyone, my name is Miss Patel and I am a year six teacher from a tiny town in the Northwest of England called Blackburn. Now I'm really excited for this unit of work because we get to learn lots about each other and the different communities that we're a part of. First of all, congratulations, you have been elected the Mayor of Oak Town and it's your job to represent our town and help to improve the lives of its constituents. Now, this word means the people who have voted for you to be elected as the Mayor of Oak Town. Now, it's my job to guide you to understand the key aspects of our society, to ensure that you're ready to undertake this role. By the end of this lesson, you will understand what community is. You will explore different types of communities. You will consider the benefits of being a part of one, and you'll create a coat of arms to represent all the different communities that you're a part of. And as always, your parents or carers will work to share your work with us on social media. But before we start, let's take a look at what we need for this lesson. So in this lesson, you will need a pen or pencil, and some colouring pencils. You'll need some paper. And of course you'll need to work in your office or any quiet space will do. So this is a breakdown of our lesson today, what is a community, different types of communities, benefits of being a part of a community. I'll introduce the task and I'll show you what a good one looks like. What is a community? Now I've defined a community as a group of people who live in the same place or share common characteristics or interests, for example, the same religion, the same job, or even the same football team. Now, communities play such an important role in every aspect of our lives. We're often a part of them without even realising. We have communities in our friends and our families, our neighbourhoods, and so many other places. We find communities in the sports teams that we support and even the foods that we like to eat. Having a sense of a community unites us all. Can you think of any communities that you might be a part of? So let's move on to different types of communities. So I've separated these into four different categories, starting with place. We have interest, action and practise. Now place is an easy one because it's a group of people living in the same place, the same town or the same city. Interest is when a group of people share the same interests or passions, they enjoy doing the same thing. For example, being a part of a book club. Action is when you have a group of people trying to bring about the same change. So it's a group of like-minded people that believe in the same cause. This could be wanting to see change, following the Black Lives Matter movement, it could be fighting climate change, or even raising money for a particular charity. And finally, we have practise. This is when you have a group of people in the same profession, which means job, or people who do the same activities. Now a common one for this is religion, but if you aren't particularly religious or you don't follow a religion, that's okay. Perhaps think about a team that you're a part of where you all carry out the same activity or believe in the same thing. So why does all of this matter? What are the benefits of being a part of a community? Now being a part of a community gives us the chance to be a part of something greater than ourselves. It gives us a sense of belonging and support. It can give us the opportunity to meet new people, to help others and to reach our goals. Ultimately it helps to ease stress and feelings of loneliness, which help to make us feel safe and secure. Okay, so your task today is to create a coat of arms, which represents the four different types of communities that you can be a part of. So coats of arms is a shield with symbols or images that represent a person or a family or a group. For example, this is a coat of arms that represents the royal family of the United Kingdom. And this is a coat of arms that represents the town that I'm a part of, so Blackburn with Darwen. Our design today will include two main components. We'll start off with the shield which will be divided into four sections. So we have place, we have interest, action and practise. Now below the shield, I've left a little bit of space for a motto or a phrase about your beliefs. So this could be a sentence or a couple of words or something that you can really relate to or something that you feel passionate about. Now, it doesn't necessarily have to be something that you've come up with. It could be a quote from somebody famous or even the lyric to one of your favourite songs. This is my WAGOLL, it's an example of one that I've made. Now the beauty of these is that there are not two coats that will be exactly the same. We're all a part of so many different communities, and this is a celebration of all of them. So as you can see, I've split my shield into four different parts. Now, for place I've included lots of different elements of the place that I'm from, you have the badge of my local football team. Now Blackburn's also within the county of Lancashire so I've included a symbolic Lancashire Red Rose. Now I'm proud of where I'm from and including it on my shield shows that it's a big part of my identity or who I am as a person. Now, for interest, this section represents my love of reading. I actually have an English degree and I love reading. I love books. So I've included some of the titles of a few of my favourite books that I like to read with my year six children. Perhaps you've read some of them too. Now for action, this represents a cause that I'm passionate about. There's been lots in the news recently about the Black Lives Matter movement. And it's something that I feel strongly about. So I've been reading and watching and educating myself so that I can help by contributing and supporting within this community too. Finally, for practise, I have chosen to represent my religion here. It's is a big part of who I am and another aspect that I'm really proud of. For my motto or my phrase at the bottom, I've written cultivate kindness. Now, in this context, the word cultivate means encourage. So putting lots of kindness out there into the world. I really hope you got to learn lots about me today. And I would love to see the communities that you are just as proud to be a part of. Now, today's lesson is called we are a jigsaw. So as you've been elected the Mayor of Oak Town, it's your job to represent our town and help to improve the lives of its constituents. These are the people who have elected you to become mayor. Now, this week, we'll be able to recognise the different groups that make up and contribute to our community. So by the end of this lesson, you will look at the different groups that make up a community. You'll meet some faces from my community. We'll begin by talking about the people in our communities. You'll get the chance to meet a couple of people from my community. I'll talk you through today's task, and show you what a good example looks like. So let's start off with the people in our communities. We're thinking of the smaller groups of people, or the smaller communities that contribute to our town as a whole. Even though there are lots of small communities within our town, they all have one thing in common. And that's the place in which they live. Now, some communities may even have a unique aspect that helps to identify them, for example, in school we have uniforms and a football team or a sports team might have a kit to represent them. I'm now going to introduce you to two very important people from my community. Even though they're two different people from different races and they follow different religions, they both have one thing in common and that's the community in which they live. Now, whilst you're learning about them and listening to them talk about the smaller communities they're a part of, I want to see whether you can see which unique thing they have that helps to identify which community they're a part of. Let's start off with Huzaifah who is a faith leader in my local community.

- May please and blessings be upon you all. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, stated , which means make salam a common practise among you. This is a very special greeting in our faith that we say to one another. This special salam, why do we say this salam? Because when we say this salam to one another, it promotes peace. It promotes blessing. It promotes unity, it promote compassion. What all the people in our community and finally, throughout all the people in the entire universe. So our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, has told us that looking after the needs of one another is a great, great, great reward. Our creator, the almighty, he has emphasised the importance of , which means the rights of the creation, fulfilling, looking after the rights of the creation and of all the people around us. So this is why us faith leaders, we have created a special community welfare group where we look after the needs and wants of our fellow people of our fellow citizens regardless of which faith they are from in our own community. We go to them, we visit them, we ask how they are, we ask, "Do you need help with your shopping?" And in addition to this, we also partner with food banks and we collect food and we give this to the people who are less fortunate then us because this is a great part of our faith, and our faith teaches us that we are one, we are one united body. Remember, united we stand, divided we fall, which is why we promote unity and goodness to spread throughout the locality. And this is something as faith leaders what we're extremely proud of. This is something which runs through our DNA. We are so passionate about this. This means may the almighty grant you goodness. I'll see you again.

- That was really interesting and even though Huzaifah part of a community where all the people involved follow a specific religion, they still work to support. Now it's your turn. Your task today is to create a jigsaw where you can piece together at least six groups or six smaller communities who contribute to your town. This could include communities that you're already a part of, prominent or important communities in your town, or any communities that you'd like to join. Let me show you what a good example looks like. Here I have drawn six jigsaw pieces and each one includes a group or a community, which is essential to everyday life in my town. Perhaps you'll recognise some of them or you'll want to include some of them in your own jigsaw. As an extra challenge, you can ask your parents or carers to help you cut out the pieces and ask a friend or a family member to solve the puzzle. I really hope you got to think about the small communities and groups that make up and contribute to your town. ﻿Hi everyone. My name is Miss. Patel and welcome to RHE unit called all around us, where we get to learn lots about each other, ourselves and the communities that we live in. Now that you've been elected the Mayor of Oak Town, it's your job to represent our town and help to improve the lives of its constituents. These are the people who have elected you to become Mayor. Now, a great leader recognises the hard work that people around them do. And that's why this week you have the opportunity to thank the people in our community who are there to help us. So by the end of this lesson, you will identify the people and the groups that help in our community. You look at the different ways in which they help. You'll write a formal letter, thanking them, and as always, your parents or carers can share your work with us on social media. Before we start, let's take a look at what you need in this lesson. So you'll need a pen or a pencil, you'll need some paper, and of course you need to work in your office or any quiet space will do. We'll begin by looking at various jobs in our community. We'll look at the structure of a formal letter. I'll show you a WAGOLL. We'll discuss what the task and success criteria will be and how you can self assess your work at home. Now let's start by looking at the jobs in our local community and by identifying their roles or the positions they play. Pause the video now and write down which jobs you think each of these pictures represent. Press play again when you're ready to continue. Let's check our answers. So we have a teacher, a vet, a firefighter and a doctor. How did you do? Did you get all of them right? Brilliant. Now, I want you to think about what all of these people have in common. What do you think? In all of these job roles, one of the primary responsibilities is to help people. These people are some of the heroes in our community. Now that you have an idea of some of the people you can address this letter to let's recap the structure of a formal letter. What's the first thing that we start with? That's right. We put the address in the top right corner. What do we follow this with? Now, this is an element that lots of children forget. Can you remember what it is? Brilliant. It's today's date. You need to write the date in full with the date, the month and the year. This will all be aligned to the right hand side of your page. Next we address the letter to our recipient. This is the person who will receive our letter. Ideally, we start this with the word to, or dear. Now we follow this with the introduction. What do you think is included in the introduction? That's right. Whenever we write a letter, it's always a good idea to explain what the purpose of this letter is. Now, what do you think comes next? As we're writing a letter to thank people, we'll include this in the main body of our letter. You can write who you're thanking and why you're thanking them. This could be more than one paragraph. Finally, to conclude your letter, you could discuss the importance of the work our heroes do, as well as how much it means to the people in our community. If you don't know the name of the person you're writing to, we end with yours faithfully. If we do know their name, what do we end with? That's right. We end with yours sincerely. You'll need to keep this writing frame to hand when you're completing your independent task. Let's take a look at the WAGOLL now to see whether I've included all my ideas in the right places. From the previous slide, can you remember if I've put the address the date and the valediction in the right place? As it's right. Well then can you remember what paragraph one will do? Remember, it was to introduce myself and explain why I'm writing this letter. So I've written, I am, this is where you'd write your name, the Mayor of Oak Town, and I'm writing to you on behalf of our fellow citizens to extend a heartfelt thank you for the services you provide on a daily basis. What do you think the word citizens means? These are the people who live in our town or city. We are all citizens of our town. Now it says, your contribution to our community is invaluable, and your commitment to making this a successful and thriving town does not go unnoticed. That's the end of our first paragraph. What do you think we'll write about next? That's right. We'll thank our heroes and explain why we're so grateful. I would like to express my gratitude for your extraordinary effort. The word gratitude here means how grateful we are. Collectively, so altogether you have helped us to learn, helped us to feel better when we're unwell and you have kept us safe by enforcing the law. You take care of our pets, you bring us our mail, and you ensure we are fed every day. Thank you for your hard work and support during these difficult times. Your humility, strength and kindness are greatly appreciated. Notice how I've used the rule of three, right at the end. This is when I repeat some things similar three times to emphasise the great qualities of the people who help us. Now, the word humility refers to how humble they are. This means they don't want lots of recognition for the work they do. They don't need a pat on the back. They just quietly get on with it every day and help us. Now, finally, in this last paragraph, what do we need to include? That's right. We need to explain what work our heroes do and what this means to the people in our community. Now I've written, we thank you wholeheartedly for. Now, you can use the space to explain why you and the public are so thankful. Thank you for being our town's guiding light in the face of both adversity and triumph. Those are two really great, but difficult words. Adversity means hardship or difficulty and triumph means victory or achievement. Now I've ended my letter with yours faithfully, because I haven't addressed my letter to a specific person. If you want to write your letter to a particular hero in your life, then you can address the letter to them and you can end your letter with yours sincerely. Finally, this is where I'd write my name and our title, which is the Mayor of Oak Town. So to summarise your task today is to write a formal letter to the citizens in your town, thanking them for the services they provide on a daily basis. This is what each paragraph should contain. So this is a success criteria for our introduction where you can write who you are, what your job role is and why you're writing. And some key words you could include. Your second paragraph, remember this section can be more than one paragraph. You'll explain what they do. So why is that work so important? And what specific job roles do you want to mention? And finally, in your last paragraph, you will thank the heroes. You can show gratitude for their support and you can emphasise why it's so important. I've also included some key words you can include in your letter. If there are any words that you're unsure about, use this time to look them up. You can press pause now and write your letter using the success criteria, the WAGOLL and the writing frame, and you can press play again when you've completed your letter. I hope you're proud of the letters that you've completed. You can now use a different coloured pen to check your work against the success criteria, using the symbols below. Is there anything that you've missed and could add now? You've worked especially hard today. That was a tricky class that required lots of thinking. So I'm really proud of you. The Mayor Making ceremony

Now, today's an exciting day for you, because it's the Annual Mayor Making Ceremony, which is the day you officially become the Mayor of Oak Town. So by the end of this lesson, you will prepare for the Mayor making Ceremony, you'll attend a meeting with a representative from the police about why rules and laws have been put into place, you will write and deliver a speech about the importance of rules and laws and society, and as always, your parents or carers can share your work with us on social media. So before we start, let's take a look at what we'll need for this lesson. So you'll need a pen or a pencil, you'll need some paper, and of course you'll need to work in your office, or any quiet space will do. You'll receive the rope and chain of office from your predecessor. This is the person who had the job before you. Before I can tell you anything else, we're running late for a meeting. Now as the Mayor, you have many responsibilities, one of them is to work alongside the police to ensure our town and its people are safe. Abid just one of the people who do an outstanding job in taking care of our citizens in our town. He's going to talk to you today about why rules and laws have been put into place.

Hi everyone, my name is Abid Salek and I'm a police officer. My job is to keep the country safe and to maintain law and order. I protect members of the public and look after everyone's properties. Me and my colleagues are responsible to prevent crime from taking place, keeping the road safe, and to ensure we try improving people's lives. I spend a lot of my time meeting children and members of the community to try keeping everyone safe and to try and improve in their quality of life. It's important for everyone to follow the rules to ensure we all live in happy, a peaceful, and a safe society. Everyone has the right to feel safe, and it's my job to try doing this. I hope you've all enjoyed listening to me. Thank you for showing an interest, and I really look forward to working with you all.

At the Annual Meeting of the Council or the Mayor Making Ceremony, you'll be expected to make a speech outlining the ways you will carry out your duties. This speech will be followed by a big reception or a party for civic dignitaries and your guests. Now civic dignitaries are important members of the Council. So let me show you what a good speech looks like. So we've written, "I am truly humbled as I stand here before you as the Mayor of Oak Town, humbled that you have elected me to represent our community and humbled that you have put your trust in me to drive change in this town". As you can see, I've opened by addressing the guests. A short introduction is key when you're writing a speech. Now I've also repeated the word humbled, the repetition puts emphasis on how I feel. "I want to use my role as Mayor of Oak Town to encourage us all to support each other". Now I've outlined what my new role will be. And now I'll outline what my new responsibility will be. "It is my responsibility to ensure that your concerns are heard, your achievements are celebrated, and your lives are improved. I have a vision of us all living cohesively and peacefully. And my goal is to ensure every one of us strives to reinforce these values of togetherness and equality." What does cohesively mean? This is when people stick together. So here you can talk about your vision. What do you want to see in this town? What important changes do you want to see? Next, I'll celebrate diversity in our town. We know our town is full of people of different ages, different races, people who follow different religions, and these are all differences to be celebrated. So we've written, "We are all so different in our own ways and we each have our own incredible talents and practises, but it is this diversity that makes us so special. Despite having different backgrounds, different interests, different religious or non religious beliefs, we all exist harmoniously on this platform of Oak Town." Now, the rule of three here is perfect in a speech because it can be used to emphasise important points. "You might live on the other side of the nation from me, your accent might be different to mine, the colour of your skin might be different too, but we are all a part of one community. Most of all, I want to thank my community for having faith in me. I will not let you down and I want to assure you that I am here to listen to your ideas and concerns. We are Oak Town. So it is our responsibility to make it." Now that you've pointed out the differences, why do they need to be celebrated? It encourages unity and brings us all together. And finally, thank the people, thank the public that have elected you to become their Mayor. You can use this success criteria to ensure you have included all the main points you need to mention in your speech. I really hope you got to think about the people in our town that make a difference from the people on the ground, such as policemen, like Abid, to people who work behind the scenes in the government. I have a dream

﻿Everyone, my name is Miss Patel, and welcome back to our RHE unit called, All Around Us. Where we get to learn lots about ourselves, each other and the communities that we live in. Now that you have been elected the Mayor of Oak Town, it's your responsibility to represent our town and help to improve the lives of its constituents. These are the people who elected you to become Mayor. Now today is a very exciting day because it's your first official duty. Today, you will understand the rights we have as human beings and advocate these to schoolchildren in your town. To advocate something means to publicly show support for it, which is exactly what you'll be doing today. So by the end of this lesson, you will understand what human rights are, you'll explore the rights that we have as human beings, you'll create a poster demonstrating human rights and as always, your parents or carers will be able to share your work with us on social media. So before we start, let's take a look at what we'll need for this lesson. In this lesson, you'll need a pen or a pencil and some colouring pencils, you'll need some paper and you'll need to work in your office or any quiet space will do. We'll begin by talking about what human rights are, We'll discuss what rights we have, I'll talk you through today's task, and I'll show you what a good one looks like. Before we talk about human rights, let's dial it back a little bit and look at the word, rights. So what are rights? Now I've defined rights as those things that a person is morally or legally entitled to have. The word morally refers to right or wrong behaviour. And the word legally means by law. So if we look at that definition as a whole, rights are those things that person should have because one, it's the correct thing to do, and two, the law supports it. But if you cast your minds back to the beginning of the lesson, it was titled, "I have a dream." Now this was a really famous line from a public speech that was delivered by this man on the screen. Do you recognise him? His name is Martin Luther King Junior. And he was a brilliant civil rights activist. This means he fought for people's rights. In particular, he wanted to end racism in America. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, for all of his peaceful protesting. I've included a quote by him too, which says, "a right delayed is a right denied." This means that by getting a right at a later time, is the same as being stopped from having this right at all. Do you agree with him? I think that's a really powerful thing to say. Now that we know what rights are, we can shift our focus to human rights. Now after world war two ended in 1945, millions of people lost their lives and millions more were driven from their homes. This means they lost their homes or had to leave them behind. So the leaders of the world realised they needed to do something. So they set up an organisation called the United Nations. This is the flag that represents them. They created this organisation because they wanted to stop wars from happening, and they wanted to create a better world for everybody. One of their first jobs was to draw up a list of human rights that belong to every single person in the world. They call this the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The world's government promised to tell everybody about them and protect them. So nobody can take these rights away from you. But these are just a few of the rights that we have. We were born free and equal, and we should treat others in the same way. We all have the right to our own thoughts and to believe in any religion. We have the right to access education, and to earn a decent living standard. That means that we should have access to food, to clothing, to shelter or housing, and for medical help if we're poorly. We have the right to life and to be free and to feel safe. And finally, we have the right to meet our friends and to work together in peace to defend our rights. These rights were written up to protect us, and nobody can take these rights or freedoms away from us. Now as the Mayor of Oak Town, you want to ensure that you encourage the people in your town to learn and think about the human rights they're entitled to. So today, your task is to create a poster highlighting the human rights and the importance of them. This is a good example of what you could do. You can talk about how they came about, who protects them and created them, and of course I'd love to see some examples of the rights that we have. I really hope you got to think about all the rights that we have, and you take a moment to be grateful for one of the rights that you have. Do you remember in 1948, a few years after World War II ended, the leaders of the world created an organisation called the United Nations. This was an organisation created to promote peace. And one of their first jobs was to create a list of rights. They called this the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The world's governments promised to tell everybody about it and to protect all of these rights. Just over 20 years later in 1989, the governments around the world adopted the UNCRC. This stands for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It applies to everybody under the age of 18. It contains 54 articles or rights that cover all aspects of a child's life. And it outlines how adults and governments can work together to make sure that children can enjoy all of their rights. For our lesson today, we're particularly interested in Article 28, which is the right to an education. It reads, every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in school must respect children's dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this. So what we want to do today is to create a formal letter to the United Nations, persuading them to ensure all children have the right to access education. So let's start by recapping the structure of a formal letter. What's the first thing that we start with? That's right, we put our address in the top corner. What do we follow this with? This is an element that lots of children forget. Can you remember what it is? Brilliant, it's today's date. You need to write the date in full with the date, the month and the year. This is all aligned to the right-hand side of our page. Next, we address the letter to our recipient. This is the person who will receive our letter. Ideally, we start with the word to or dear, we follow this with our introduction. What do you think is included in the introduction? That's right, whenever we write a letter, it's always a good idea to explain what the purpose of writing the letter is. What do you think comes next? As we're writing a letter to persuade someone, we need to highlight the issue, which we'll include in the main body of our letter. This could be more than one paragraph. And finally, to conclude your letter, you could discuss the changes you want to see and why they're so important. If you don't know the name of the person you're writing to, we end this with, yours faithfully. If we do know their name, what do we end with? That's right, we write, yours sincerely. You'll need this writing frame to hand when you're completing your independent tasks. Let's take a look at this WAGOLL to see whether I've included all my ideas in the right places. From our previous slide, can you remember if I have put the address, the date and the valediction in the right place? Yes, it is right, well done. Can you remember what paragraph one will do? That's right, it is used to introduce myself and explain why I'm writing this letter. Now I've addressed the letter to Mr. Secretary-General, who holds the highest role within the UN. So our letter reads: My name is, this is where you write your name, and I'm the Mayor of Oak Town in, and the name of your country. I am writing to you because the people in my town feel strongly about ensuring that free education is available for children all around the world. This goal of worldwide primary education is not only a fundamental right protected by the convention on the rights of a child, but it is essential in protecting children from exploitation and in eliminating poverty. This means protecting children from being treated unfairly and by getting rid of poverty. The word fundamental here means important. Now that's the end of my first paragraph. So what do you think we'll write about next? Brilliant, we'll discuss the issue at hand. Even before the implications or the effects of COVID-19, or coronavirus, we had 258 million children not in education. This means 258 million children are being deprived of their human right, which is clearly outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The word deprived means stopped from having their human rights. This is unacceptable. We must do more. Some of the barriers or obstacles or problems that these children are facing include expensive school fees, conflict in their country, or children are being forced to work instead of going to school. In our final paragraph, what do we need to include? That's right, we need to explain what changes we want to see. So it reads Mr. Secretary-General, I still have hope. Hope that we can build and upgrade facilities to ensure every child's needs are met. Hope that gender will no longer be a factor that disadvantages a child, and finally hope that all children have equal access to free education. Now, the rule of three here is especially important because repeating something three times brings emphasis or draws attention to an important point that you're making. Now I've ended my letter with yours sincerely, because we know who we're writing our letter to. We're writing our letter to Mr. Secretary-General. I'll then write my name and my title, which is the Mayor of Oak Town. To summarise, your task is to write a formal letter to the United Nations, persuading them to ensure that all children are given the right to an education. This is what each paragraph should contain. In your first paragraph, you'll write who you are, what your job role is and why you're writing. In paragraph two, remember this could be more than one paragraph, you'll write why the UN's job is so important and what the current problem is. And in the final paragraph, you'll conclude with the changes you want to see. I've also included some key words you can include in your letter.
