﻿Hi, everyone, my name is Miss Dhillon. And in this lesson, we will be using all the key pieces of information and knowledge we have acquired over the course of this unit to plan and write an essay, and that is reflected in the LO for today's lesson, to plan and write an essay about Christianity. I hope you are as excited as I am for today's lesson. Let's start by looking at the lesson structure. We will begin by understanding what an essay is, and what it looks like. We will then move on to planning and writing paragraph one, then we will do the same and do paragraph two and finally, paragraph three. Once the lesson is over, and you have written all three paragraphs, I would like you to read it aloud to the screen or to someone at home, because I want you to be really, really proud of all the hard work that you've put into your essay. For this lesson, you will need some paper, make sure you have plenty of it because we will need some paper for planning and some for writing your essay. You will also need a pencil and a ruler. I can give you a few seconds to get those things if you haven't already. So let's start with the question, what is an essay? An essay is a piece of writing that focuses on a particular subject. For example, sharks, World War I, The Amazon Rainforest, Mediaeval Monarchs or Christianity. You can see an example of an essay on the right hand side of the screen. You can see that it's an extended piece of writing and that has been organised into paragraphs. As this is a module example, you might want to pause the video to have a read to see how this chapter has written an essay. We are now going to draw our planning table. The title for today's essay question is, How is Christianity Unique? You would want to write this at the very top so that you're always reminded of the question that you are answering. I would like you to draw a table with three columns. The key information should be the largest column as you're going to put the most amount of writing in this column and to leave eight to 10 lines for each row. And like it says at the bottom, don't forget to write the title. So I would let you pause the video now so you can draw your planning grids for today's lesson. The question for your essay today is, How is Christianity Unique? Unique means what makes it special or unlike anything else? For your first paragraph, you are going to be answering the question, who was Jesus? This was our very first lesson at the beginning of this unit. Don't worry, I know that was a long time ago so I am going to help you recap the key information through the use of some pictures. So you're going to have a look at these pictures. And hopefully it will jog your memory about this question. So before we even begin, do you remember, a, how many years ago did Christianity begin? For b, where did it begin? I'm going to give you a few seconds to think about those two questions. Okay, so Christianity began in the Middle East. So well done if you got that, and it began 2000 years ago, how many years ago? Good. So that's really important when you're introducing the religion. Now looking at this first image, you might want to have a little look closer. What can you see in the image? Good. So this first image is representing when Jesus was born. So this is when Jesus was born in a stable and He was born to Mary in Bethlehem. And this story of Jesus's birth is called the? Good, the Nativity. Now let's have a look at the second image. In this second image, you can see that Jesus is being baptised and He is being baptised by? Good job, John the Baptist. During His life, you can see in that next image, Jesus told loads of parables, which are stories. And in these parables He taught people how to live. One example of a parable that Jesus told is the parable of the Good Samaritan. So in that picture, you can see that someone is helping the injured man. And this we know is the Samaritan. Let's look at the next image. So as well as telling parables, Jesus also performed miracles. Miracles can't be explained and some of the miracles that Jesus performed, were walking on water, but in this image, you can see that He is healing the sick, or healing the blind. So this next image, there are 12 people sat around Jesus, do you remember what this image is showing? Shout it out if you know. Good, so the Roman leaders at this time decided that Jesus was getting too powerful. And as a result, they wanted to kill Jesus. Jesus already knew that He was meant to die. So He hosted the Last Supper for His 12 disciples where He gave them bread and wine. Let's look at the next image. Jesus's disciple Judas betrayed Him with a kiss. As a result, Jesus was then crucified on a cross, He was then resurrected, which means He came back to life or He rose from the dead. And this happened three days later. Now that we've had a recap, pause the video now and write down all the key information in bullet points, using the pictures on the screen. Also, write down any key vocabulary that I've just mentioned by recapping the story in all these images. Pause the video now and complete those two parts of the planning grid. Okay, so you can now see all the key vocabulary that I could think of. If you have missed any of these key vocabulary, then you can pause the video and write these down into your planning grid. Pause the video if you need to do them. This is what your completed table should look like. Remember, the key information should only be short and in bullet points because it's only there to help you remember the structure of your essay, you don't want to spend too long on writing the key information is just the key points in bullet points. So if you didn't do that this time, at least you can see my model now and next time it should be even faster. So before we start writing your first paragraph, I want to share the success criteria with you. Number one, you need to ensure you're writing in full sentences. Number two, you need to include key information and key vocabulary. Number three, you need to leave a line between each paragraph just like you saw in the model example at the very beginning of the lesson. Finally, imagine you are explaining this topic to someone who has never learned about it before. I know you're experts, but when someone else is reading it, they might not know as much as you do. So you need to remember to address it to people who might not know anything about it. So I am now going to model writing the first paragraph using this planning grid. So I'm going to start by writing out the title for my essay. How is Christianity unique? Now let's look at our planning grid for paragraph one. Let's have a look at the first point in the key information section. Middle East 2000 years ago. This is when and where Christianity began. So I need a sentence stem in order to explain that. So keeping your plan next to you so you can always refer back to it and I'm going to start with Christianity is a religion. Let me write that down. So remember to leave a line between your title and your first paragraph, and starting with the left side column. So Christianity is a religion that began. So here it says 2000 years ago, that began 2000 years ago, and it says in the Middle East, in the Middle East, and I'm not going to forget to put my full stop at the end to show that's the end of my sentence, I'm just going to reread my sentence to make sure it makes sense. Christianity is a religion that began 2000 years ago in the Middle East. So always stop and check just to make sure it's making sense. So that's perfect, and ready to move on. So let's go back and I can now cross this out, because I've used that information. So you can use your plan to cross out things that you've used, or you can just tick it off, that's absolutely fine. I have used the word Christianity, 2000 years ago, and in the Middle East. So you can see how you can use your plan as a tick list, or a success criteria to make sure you are doing the right thing. Now, let's move on. At this point, I probably want to introduce Jesus, because the whole paragraph is about Jesus. So the next part is about the Nativity. But I don't want to jump straight into the Nativity, I want to highlight the importance of Jesus to Christians. So I'm going to start with Christians believe that Jesus, so you can see here, I'm going to tick Jesus off. I've introduced Him, is the Son of God. And one more information, Christians believe that Jesus is son of God, and that He died for all their sins. So I'm linking my learning to my previous knowledge to explain who Jesus was and why He was important. So now I've ticked off Jesus, I can now think about Jesus's life. And if I want to start by telling the story of Jesus's life, I will need to start at the very beginning when He was born. So I'm going to have to talk about the Nativity first. So let's carry on Jesus's birth story is called the Nativity. This is when, do you remember what Jesus' mother is called? Yeah, good, Mary. So this is when Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. So, let's look here, I can take off Nativity, and I can cross out the Nativity when Jesus is born, okay? So you can see I'm working through my plan. Now that I have mentioned Jesus's birth, I want to move on to talking about the baptism by John the Baptist, so it's very good to use an adverbial, fronted adverbial to show that time has passed. So I might say, when Jesus grew up, He was baptised by John the Baptist, so I can cross that out and tick baptised and John the Baptist. During His life. So you can see another fronted adverbial, what did Jesus do during His life? So during His life, he shared His parables, and He performed His miracles. So I might want to put that together. So during His life, Jesus told lots of stories called parables. These taught people how to live. So I've mentioned parables. So I can tick that off. So you can see. You don't want to go into too much depth, because I know I'm going to be talking about the parables later on. But I do want to say that in His life, he did tell a lot of parables, and they taught people how to live. So just one key information that people need to know about Jesus's life. Now I'm going to talk about the miracles. So say Jesus also performed miracles, which could not be explained. For example, can you think of an example, which miracle can I mention in my essay? Okay, so you might have thought of one, I'm going to say, for example, walking on water. So let's go back to the plan, I have now mentioned the miracles. So I can take that off. Now, the next part is to move on to the Roman leaders who wants to kill Jesus because He was popular. And so Judas betrayed Him with a kiss, then Jesus was crucified, and then He was resurrected. So now this will form the final part of my paragraph. So let's move back to the essay. So Jesus also performed miracles which could not be explained, for example, walking on water. So as Jesus became more popular, because these things made Him really, really popular amongst His followers, so as Jesus became more popular, the Roman leaders decided to kill Jesus. Jesus, so remember, when they've decided to kill Him, Jesus hosted the Last Supper. So I've done Roman leaders and have done that. So I need to talk about the Last Supper. So Jesus held the Last Supper for His disciples. Remember, disciples are His followers. Okay, so as Jesus became more popular, the Roman leaders decided to kill Jesus, Jesus held last supper for His disciples, one of His disciples, Judas, betrayed Him with a, good, and with a kiss. What happened as a result, so Judas betrayed Jesus. The Last Supper was held, He was betrayed by Judas. So Jesus was then crucified on a cross. So let's say here, and as a result, that means because of this, as a result, Jesus was crucified on a cross. So crucified on a cross, and Jesus was crucified. As a result, Jesus was crucified on a cross. So the final thing is to mention the resurrection. So as a result, Jesus was crucified on a cross, He then rose from the dead, which means or was resurrected three days later. And just to finish that off, we might say why it's important. So I can cross this out, and I've done this. But I might say it's important for Christians. Why is it important? So let me think back to my lesson. What does it represent? So this is important to Christians, because it shows that Jesus conquered which means overcame death, okay? So now that I've written my paragraph, I'm now going to read it. And if there's any mistakes, I am going to correct them as I go. So that is why we reread to make sure it makes sense, but also to correct any mistakes. So now you can either listen or read with me. Don't forget to write the title at the very top. How is Christianity unique? Pause the video now to write your first paragraph and restart once you're finished. Now let's have a look at paragraph two, where you will be answering the question, what is the Holy Trinity? Let's recap the key information. Christians believe in one God, this God is all powerful, all knowing and all loving. The idea of the Holy Trinity is really important in Christianity. Christians believe that God has three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The idea of the Holy Trinity was written down in a special meeting in IKEA with some church leaders. In this creed, we can learn a lot about what Christians believe about God. You can see on the screen a part of the Nicene Creed. Christians believe that there is one God who is the Almighty and creator of heaven and Earth. They believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God and suffered for them. He also tells us that Jesus was crucified and resurrected, which means He came back to life. Now that we've had a recap, I would like you to pause the video and write down all the key information and key words for this paragraph. You can now see all the keywords that I could think of. If you've missed any of these in your grid, you might want to pause the video now and write these down into your key vocabulary column. Here is what your completed table might look like. If there is anything that you have missed, that's okay, you can pause the video and add it to your planning table now. I know that sometimes starting is quite tricky. So on this page are some sentence stems that you can use to start your second paragraph. You can use these to get started. So you might want to come back to this once you've seen the next page and use one of these sentences to start your paragraph. So now, I would like you to pause the video and I would like you to write the second paragraph of your essay. Remember, you can rewind to the previous slide if you want to use any of the sentence stems that you just stored. Restart the video once you have finished. We are now on our final paragraph for this lesson. For the third paragraph, you are answering the question, what are the parables of Jesus? For this section, we are not going to summarise all three parables that I taught you in the lesson. This is because it's going to take us a very, very long time to write about them all. Therefore, you must choose one parable that you remember that you will be able to summarise really clearly, but also tell us the key message it teaches. So let's recap the key information. I'm going to model the parable of the Good Samaritan because for me, that's the easiest one for me to remember and write about. So, let me start by recapping the key information. Jesus told a lot of parables which are stories that teach a lesson. One of the parables that Jesus told was the parable of the Good Samaritan. In this parable, a man is attacked by robbers and left half dead on the road. A priest sees him but crosses the road to the other side. A Levite who was also from the same religion then comes along as well and ignores the man on the floor. A Samaritan who is the enemy of the Jews came along but stopped to help the injured man. This parable teaches Christians that they should love their neighbour and show kindness even if they don't like that person. Now, at this point, you need to decide, are you going to write about the Good Samaritan or looking at the pictures, you might want to choose the parable of the sower or the parable of the wise and foolish builder? Whichever parable you choose, that is the parable for which you need to write down all the key vocabulary. So pause the video now and write your key information and key vocabulary for paragraph three. Okay, so on the screen, you can see the key words. If you manage to include all the ones that are relevant to the parable you want to write about, then thumbs up, that's amazing, but if you missed any key words, you might want to skim through now and add them to your key vocabulary column. On the screen, you can see some sentence stems that are going to help you start your final paragraph. Feel free to use any of the ones on the screen, or be more creative and come up with your own sentence stems. This is what your finished key information and key vocabulary table should look like. Again, if there's anything you've missed, feel free to pause and add on to your planning grid. I would now like you to pause the video so that you can write your third and final paragraph of your essay. Remember, you can always rewind to the previous slide if you want to use the sentence stems that you just saw. Remember, for this final third paragraph, you only need to choose one parable to summarise. You just need to explain that there's loads of parables but you're only going to summarise one because you want to explain what the key message of this parable is.
