﻿Hello everybody, Miss. Hughes here. What's your name? For this lesson, I've come to the mountain woodlands because it's that habitat that my Teddy, Toffee, is from. A habitat is a place that an animal lives. And different animals like different habitats. Brown bears like Toffee love living in the mountain woodlands. I wonder if your teddy is a brown bear like Toffee or maybe something else. We'll find out because in this lesson, we will learn what habitats are and create the perfect habitat for our teddy. We're going to have three lessons on habitats. The first with me, the second with Miss. Sidenius, and the third with Mrs. Garrard. In this lesson, we will listen to a story, learn about habitats, and then you are going to create a habitat for your teddy. You're going to need your brain, which is already in your head, ready to do a good learning and explorer hat like mine, and your teddy. So pause the video here, get what you need and restart when you're ready. Let's begin, but before we do that, make sure your hat is on and you're ready to go to different habitats because this story is called the Nature Girls by Aki and it's published by Macmillan. And it's about a group of girls who go exploring to lots of different habitats. See how many habitats you can spot while you listen to the story. These are the nature girls. They've all got different names and they love exploring. We're nature girls, we must explore. We pack our bags, we're out the door. And off we go, there's much to see. We'll start our journey by the sea. A pod of dolphins swim nearby, the fish come to, we all say hi. It's time to go, we march along. We smile at birds and share their song. On we trek across the land. Up ahead, we see some sand. A camel pads up to our side, he takes us for a bumpy ride. In tall grass we creep up, slow all around are Buffalo. See you plains, it's been nice. Now we're off to find some ice. A tawny owl, she sees us too. She hoots a question, who are you? The Tundra has snow everywhere, look how cute, an Arctic hare. There's one more stop on our big trip, we've got our compass and our ship. The forest is lush and filled with sound. Look at all this life we've found. It's hard to leave, but we must go. There's more to see and do and know. The end, your turn. Meet the biomes, a biome is a community of plants and animals that covers a large area of earth. Temperature, soil, and the amount of light or water helps determine the kinds of plants and animals that live in the area. Let's have a look at the different biomes, the different habitats that the nature girls visited. There was the desert, deserts are dry, there isn't much rain. There was the aquatic habitat, the underwater habitat where salt water or fresh water. There were so many plants and creatures that live below the surface here. Then we had the grasslands, grasslands are covered with grasses, there aren't many trees and it rains more than a desert. Then there is the Tundra, the Tundra is the coldest. No trees live here and there is a thick layer of frozen ground. And then there are the forests, forests are full of trees and other woody plants. There was so many habitats that the nature girls visited and now we're going to learn about some of them. But what is a habitat? A habitat is a home that animals live in. A habitat is a home that animals live in. And different animals like different habitats. Here's a picture of just some of the habitats that animals like to live in. Which habitats can use spot? Tell your screen. We have the woodlands, the forest full of trees, the polar habitats, the coldest habitats, the rainforests, with lots of trees like forests, but with lots of rain too. And the desert, the desert are the hot, dry habitats. Different habitats are good for different animals. There are some things that make a good habitat, different habitats have different climates. My turn climates, you turn, climates are the weather conditions in the habitats. Some climates are hot, while some are rainy and some are freezing. Different habitats have different climates, different habitats have different shelters. Places that animals will go to sleep or to hide. They have different shelter. And different habitats have different foods for the animals. Some have lots of plants and some have lots of meat. The climate, shelter and food of a habitat are very important because the right ones help the animals to survive. They help them to live. Let's take a look at some of the habitats that animals live in. So before you do this, we need to get ready to go into the woodland. So I want you to stand up and take a big step into the woodland in three, two, one, and here we are. There's lots of trees around us. Let's take a look at what makes a woodland a good habitat for some animals. Look at the picture, what shelter do you see in the picture? That's right, There are lots of trees in Woodlands and they help animals to shelter from the rain. Woodlands have very mixed climates. Some have lots of rain and some have lots of sun, but the trees and the plants make good shelter and food for the animals that live there. Here's some of the animals that live in a woodland. Tell your screen what they are. We have squirrels, deer, mice, and owls, along with lots of other animals. I can see that this squirrel is eating a nut or a seed. And the mouse is eating leaf. There is lots of food for the animals that live in a woodland. Let's take a look at our next habitat. And for this one, I'm going to take off my explorer hat and put on a hat that is much warmer because we're going to go into a polar habitat, in three, two, one, it's freezing here. The ground is covered in snow and you can see lots of snow and ice in the picture. It would be too cold for lots of animals to live in a polar habitat. But some animals like to live in freezing cold places. Here are just some of those animals, what can you see? That's right, polar bears like to live in polar habitats. So do penguins and so do seals, but how? There's not a lot of shelter and there's not a lot of plans for them to eat. So polar animals have to adapt to survive. They have sick coats of fur or feathers to keep them warm, along with layers of blubber like the penguins and the seals. And the blubber is fat, which keeps them warm in really cold places. These animals are white so they camouflage into the snow and are protected from predators. Most animals that live in polar habitats eat meat because there is not a lot of plants available. Some animals like freezing habitats, like the polar bears. Now, it's time to step into our next habitat. I'm going to take off my hat and put on a raincoat because we're going to a warm, wet habitat called the rainforest in three, two, one, and I'm in the rainforest. You can see all of the plants behind me. Take a look at this picture of the rain forest. What can you see, tell your screen? That's right, we can see lots of trees, which make great shelter for the animals that live there. The sky looks a little cloudy, that's because in the rainforest, it is very hot, but very rainy too, and when it is hot and rainy we call it humid. My turn, humid, your turn. Lots of animals living in the rainforest because they liked living in hot, wet places. What animals can you see? We can see tigers, gorillas, toucans and orangutans. They are just some of the many species that live there. Rainforest animals are often in danger. There are not many of them still living. That's because lots of parts of the rainforest are being cut down to make room for people to build things or for people to use the wood. That means there's not as much rainforest as there used to be. So we have to look after our rainforest so that these beautiful animals survive. Now we've got one most stop on our habitat adventure. I'm going to take off my coat because we're going somewhere very warm. We're going to go into the desert in three, two, one. Wow, it's so hot here. I'm starting to feel a bit thirsty because there isn't much water. Deserts are hot, dry places. What can you see in the picture? We can see the sand on the ground, there's lots of sand but not many plants because there's not enough rainfall for most plants to survive. Not a lot of animals can survive in the desert because it is too hot and dry, but some animals do. What animals live in a desert habitat? Tell your screen. Lots of you said camels, so they can survive for ages without water. Some snakes survive in the desert because they don't need much water. And even some penguins, not the same type that live in a polar habitat. Now that we've looked at our animals and the habitats that they live in, you have a task to pause the video and match the animal to their habitat. Let's say the animal names first, gorilla, camel squirrel and polar bear and the habitat, woodland, polar, rainforest, desert. Pause the video, match the animals to their habitats and restart when you're ready. Well done everybody, you're working so hard. Let's go through the answers. The gorilla lives in the rainforest, the gorilla likes warm, wet conditions called humid. The camel lives in that desert, where it is hot and dry. The squirrel lives in the woodland where there is some sun and some rain. The polar bear lives in the polar habitat, where it is freezing, well done. Now it's your turn to create a habitat for your teddy just like I had for Toffee. Toffee is a brown bear whose natural habitat is the mountains woodlands. And the mountains woodlands that Toffee likes are quite hot with some rain. The shelter that Toffee likes is under trees, where he's not going to get too wet, and he likes to eat fruit. So I've thought carefully about the things that Toffee the bear likes, and I've designed him a habitat. I've thought about the climate that he likes. I've made sure he's got lots of plants that would survive in a sunny, wet habitat. I thought about the shelter. I made sure there are lots of tall plants and trees that Toffee can shelter under and I've given him some fruit because that's what he likes to eat. I've made sure he's close to a river at the bottom, so he can get water if he needs it. What would be your teddy bear like?
