Winter: Hot/Cold

﻿Hello everybody, Miss Hughes here. I hope you've got both your winter hat and a summer hat because today we're going to be visiting some places that are very hot and some places are are very cold and by the end of the lesson we will understand the difference between things that are hot and things that are cold. There's going to be three lessons on hot and cold. Number one with me, two with Miss Sidenius and three with Mrs Garrard. In this lesson we will listen to a story, then think about hot and cold, then we'll think about the coldest season of the year which is winter and then we will do an experiment to end the lesson. You're going to need your listening ears, you're going to need some ice cubes and some warm and cold water. But only do this experiment and get those things if you have help from an adult. Pause the video here, get what you need and restart when you're ready. Great, let's begin with a story. And this story is by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet published by MacMillan Children's Books. It's called Snowball. Hmm do you think Snowball takes place in a hot or a cold place? I think cold too. Miles up all alone in a hill looking down a little round snowball gazed towards town. It looked so exciting, he wanted to play. It was time for some fun and today was the day. If he stayed where he was in the high mountain air, he'd have no one to play with and that isn't fair. He made up his mind to to go on a mission. The town would be fun, he had a suspicion. So off Snowball sat with a "Jiggy jig jig" but he didn't catch sight of a pesky brown twig. That pesky old twig caused Snowball to stumble. The poor little fella had taken a tumble. As he skidded and bounced what he didn't yet know was that as he rolled downwards he picked up more snow. And as he rolled faster with grace and with vigour he started to grow, getting bigger and bigger. He was picking up snow, bits and bobs, this and that. Pebble nose, sticky arms and a sheep for a hat. "Oops," said the snowball "but what can I do?" "Baaaa," cried the sheep who was stuck on like glue. More snow piled on as he carried on growing faster and faster, no sign of him slowing. He was boinking and bouncing down, down, down, crashing and spinning heading for town. Rabbits and flowers were in for a squashing and now he was heading for somebody's washing. Tumbling and twirling faster and faster. Oh my goodness what a disaster! Some spectacles here, some sausages there, dozens of dogs and a big scary bear. Romantic couples out for a meal, an acrobat team, an electric eel. The Mayor of the town? Not her Ladyship too! And no Snowball, no, please don't visit the zoo. Squawking and roaring, growling and hooting, croaking and hissing, screeching and tooting. The snowball was zooming as fast as a rocket, filling with stuff like a gigantic pocket. Zigging and zagging, down, down, down, bashing and smashing through the small town. Still gathering snow he shot past in a flash then all of a sudden, an almighty crash! Out flew a pebble, some sticks and a sheep. Out came some socks and some pants in a heap. Sausages, dogs and a big, scary bear, a romantic couple with snow in their hair. The acrobat team, the electric eel, the Mayor of the town spinning out like a wheel. And not to forget the whole of the zoo, the snowball had managed to swallow that too. After all the commotion the scene was snow white. The end of the story? Well, not yet, not quite. Unlike the beginning as this story ends our lonely young snowball has made lots of friends! The end. Your turn. But oops! I love that Snowball makes lots of friends on that journey. Snowball is set in a really cold place. And now we will want to talk about things that are hot and things that are cold. Look at these pictures. What do you notice? Which one do you think is a hot place and which one do you think is a cold place? Tell your screen. Point to the hot place. I think it's this one too. I can see the sun in the sky and the sand on the ground. It looks like a desert which are some of the hottest places in the world. Point to the cold picture. I agree. I think it's this picture because there is snow on the ground and on the tree. Now, we are talking about hot and cold but what does that mean? If something is hot it has a very high temperature. If it's hot it has a high temperature. What can you think of that is hot? There's some pictures on the screen to help you. Tell your screen. Some of these things are hot. Fire is a very hot thing. It's something that we should never touch because it is so hot. Sometimes we have hot drinks to warm us up like hot chocolate. What about this picture? What do you think this is? That's right. This is the sun. And the sun is incredibly hot. And of course, ovens in your kitchen are very hot too. Is there anything else you can think of? Great ideas. We must be really careful with hot things that we do not touch them unless an adult has said it is safe for us to do that. Cold things have a low temperature. Cold things have a low temperature. Let's think of some things that are cold. There's some pictures on the screen. What cold things can you think of? Ice is very cold. In fact, ice is so cold we can say it's freezing. The fridge in our kitchens are very told too. Of course, ice cream is very cold. We might eat it on a hot day to cool us down. And snow is very cold. We have to wear gloves so that our hands don't get too cold if we play with snow. On this screen are some pictures. I want you to pause the video here and sort those pictures into hot and cold. You could tell your teddy or your grown up which things you think are hot or cold to do this or you can have a go of drawing them. Pause the video now. How did you get on? Let's have a look at the answers. The oven, sun and hot chocolate fitted in the box of things that were hot. And the snowman, icicles and ice cream fitted in the cold box. Well done if you got that right. Now that we've talked about things that are hot and cold we move on to think about the coldest season in the UK. What's the coldest season? That's right! The coldest season in the UK is winter. There are four seasons altogether. Say them with me if you know them. Spring, summer, autumn and winter. Let's look at this picture of winter. What do you notice about the picture? Tell your screen. You might have noticed that there is no leaves on the tree. In winter it is too cold for the leaves to survive so they fall off in autumn and the trees are bare. Some trees do keep their leaves. Those are called coniferous trees and a Christmas tree, a fir tree, is an example of a coniferous tree. You might have noticed that there is lots of snow on the ground and on the trees. Winter is a very cold time of year. Let's think about what happens in winter. It is the coldest season. There are no leaves on the tree. Some animals are hibernating. They're asleep to avoid the cold weather. And winter has the shortest day of the year. It doesn't get light until quite late in the morning and it gets dark really early in the afternoon. Winter has the shortest day. Now we've looked at things that are hot and cold, we thought about winter and now we have an experiment to do. We're going to be scientists and test of we can melt the ice cubes. We're going to put one ice cube in warm water, the red glass and one ice cube in cold water, the blue glass and we're going to see of there's a difference in the time it takes for the ice to melt. This experiment must must be done with an adult who has checked the temperature of the water. Now there are some things to do before we do the experiment and first we need to make a prediction. Your turn. Now, a prediction is a guess at what might happen. I need your help with this. Do you predict that the ice will melt quickest in the warm water or the cold water? Tell your screen. Lots of us predict that the ice will melt fastest in the warm water. Now, to make this a fair test I need to make sure that my ice cubes are the same size and they go into the water at exactly the same time so that the test is fair. Can you count down from three? Three, two, one. And the ice cubes are in. You can just see them floating in the water. Now, we're going to count how long it takes. I think we're already on three seconds. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten! I've noticed that in the warm water the ice cube has gone. It has melted. In the cold glass of water the ice cube has got a little bit smaller. It's melted a little bit but it's still there. That means that ice melts faster in warm or hot water. Well done if you got that right. I wonder if when you try this experiment you get the same results as me. Here are some things to think about when you're doing the experiment. Think about how the ice feels. I think it's very cold and slippery. What happens if you squeeze the ice cube? I notice when I squeeze it, there's more water on my hand and the ice cube melts faster. Think about how long the ice takes to melt in the hot or cold water. Is there a way you can time it? How can you make your hands warm again after the experiment? And what happens to the ice in the warm water? Remember to tell your grown ups these things as you're doing the experiment. Here are some words that you might like to use when you're talking about the experiment. You might like to say something about it being cold, warm, icy, slippery, you might talk about how the ice melts, or about how your hands heat the ice cube up.
