Little Red Hen

﻿Hello! I'm Adam and this is Panda. We're on Unit 3 Lesson 5 working with the story, "The Little Red Hen". Let's see what's on the agenda today. First thing, we're going to warm up with learning a nursery rhyme and then it's on to, what we think, is our favourite moment of the whole unit where you get to tell the story of "The Little Red Hen" all by yourself in whatever way you would like to do it most. So we'll have a look at telling it with a story map, I shall tell it again with actions, and we'll sing the song as well, and then you can choose how you tell the story. Right, let's warm up the nursery rhyme. ♪ Time for a nursery rhyme ♪ ♪ A song from long ago ♪ ♪ Time for a nursery rhyme ♪ ♪ Ready, steady, go ♪ ♪ Hey, diddle, diddle ♪ ♪ The cat and the fiddle ♪ ♪ The cow jumped over the moon ♪ ♪ The little dog laughed ♪ ♪ To see such fun ♪ ♪ And the dish ran away with the spoon ♪ ♪ The spoon ♪ ♪ The dish ran away with the spoon ♪ The dish ran away with the spoon. ♪ Hey, diddle, dum ♪ ♪ The dog banged his drum ♪ ♪ The cow jumped over his head ♪ ♪ "Ha ha!" laughed the cat ♪ ♪ 'Cause it knocked off his hat ♪ ♪ And the hat chased the cat 'round the room ♪ ♪ The room ♪ ♪ The hat chased the cat 'round the room ♪ This just gets stranger. ♪ Hey, diddle, hoot ♪ ♪ The mouse played his flute ♪ ♪ The cow slipped down on the ground ♪ ♪ "Ha ha!" laughed the frog ♪ ♪ As it flew by on a log ♪ ♪ And the dish laughed the whole afternoon ♪ ♪ The noon ♪ ♪ The dish laughed the whole afternoon ♪ That was fun. Nursery rhyme done. So the main activity today is you telling the story of "The Little Red Hen" all by yourself, which is an amazing thing to do. So to help you, I thought it'd be a great idea to sing the story, look at the story map, tell the story together, okay? So if you're able to and you want to, I invite you to stand up, because it's really nice to move around and to do actions. And by doing the actions, it helps helps me see the pictures of the story, and when I see the pictures of the story, I can remember the words to say. So, if it works for you, stand up, and if not, in your own way enjoy singing along to the story. Here we go. ♪ Once there was a little red hen ♪ ♪ A little red hen, a little red hen ♪ ♪ Once there was a little red hen ♪ ♪ Who wanted to make bread ♪ ♪ "But who will help me sow the seeds?" ♪ ♪ Said the little red hen ♪ ♪ The little red hen ♪ ♪ "Who will help me sow the seeds ♪ ♪ So I can grow some wheat?" ♪ ♪ "Not I," said the cow ♪ ♪ "Not I," said the dog ♪ ♪ "Not I," said the mouse ♪ ♪ "Then I won't ask again" ♪ ♪ Said the little red hen ♪ ♪ "I'll sow the seeds myself" ♪ And she did. And it was fun and tasted yum! ♪ Once there was a little red hen ♪ ♪ A little red hen, a little red hen ♪ ♪ Once there was a little red hen ♪ ♪ Who made a loaf of bread ♪ ♪ "And who will help me eat the bread?" ♪ ♪ Said the little red hen ♪ ♪ The little red hen ♪ ♪ "Who will help me eat the bread? ♪ ♪ Anybody?" ♪ ♪ "I will," said the cow ♪ ♪ "I will," said the dog ♪ ♪ "I will," said the mouse ♪ ♪ "Well you didn't help me make it" ♪ ♪ Said the little red hen ♪ ♪ "So I'll eat it all myself" ♪ And she did. She ate the whole lot! Well done! Well after I sang the story in this unit, we mapped it, so let's just have a very quick look at the map. This is Panda's favourite thing. This is what helps her remember the story. You've got the little red hen who lives in a henhouse on a farm, and she wants to make bread. And the first thing she does is sow the seeds. Time passed. How the sun did shine, and the rain came down from time to time. And the seeds grew into wheat. Then she chopped the wheat down. "Who will help me?" "No," says the cow, "No," says the dog, "No," says the mouse, so she does it herself. Time passed and how the sun did shine, and the rain came down from time to time. And then it was time to grind it. She asked for help. "No," said the cow, "No," said the dog, and "No," said the mouse, so she did it all herself. And finally, it was time to make the bread. "Who will help me?" None of her friends help her, and so she bakes the loaf herself. "Who will help me eat it?" "Oh, I will!" "I will!" "I will!" "Ah, well you didn't help me make the loaf, so I'm going to eat it myself," she says. So sometimes, pictures on a map can help us tell the story, and maybe when you tell the story, you might want to look at your map, and that's fine. How about we tell the story together, one more time, before it's your turn. Okay? Let's do that next. So this time when I tell the story, you can just listen, but it'd be really a challenge to try and say some of the words with me as well. So if you can, do that out loud, and it's also fine to say those words inside your head. So remember, every word in your head quietly spoken is still said, and that's important to know. Here we go. It's storytime, it's storytime. Look, listen, learn. Once upon a time, there was a little red hen who lived in a henhouse on a farm. Early one morning, she woke up and thought, "I'd really like to make some bread. I wonder who could help me." She got the big sacks of seeds, and she took them out into the farmyard. And as she went out, she called, "Who will help me plant the seeds?" "Not I," said the cow. "Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the mouse. "Oh well," said the little red hen, "I'll sow the seeds myself." So she took the seeds, and she threw them into the trenches she'd already dug in the ground, and it was hard work. Time passed, and how the sun did shine, and the rain came down from time to time. And those seeds grew into fields of wheat. It was soon time for chopping. "Who will help me chop the wheat," said the little red hen, "so we can get the grain?" "Not I," said the cow. "Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the mouse. "Well I won't ask again," said the little red hen, "I'll chop the wheat myself." And she did, and it was hard work. And she had to determinedly work long, long days to chop all the wheat. Time passed, and how the sun did shine, and the rain came down from time to time. And in time, it was time to grind the grain and turn it into flour. "Who will help me grind the flour," said the little red hen, "so we can make some bread?" "Not I," said the cow. "Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the mouse. "Then I won't ask again," said the little red hen, "I'll grind the grains myself." And so she did, and it was hard, hard work. Time passed, and how the sun did shine, and the rain came down from time to time. And soon it was time to bake the bread. "Who will help me bake the bread?" said the little red hen. "Not I," said the cow. "Not I," said the dog. "Not I," said the mouse. "Then I won't ask again," said the little red hen, "I'll bake the loaf myself." And so she did, and it was fun. And the smell from the oven was yum, yum, yum. And soon the loaf was ready. "Who will help me eat the loaf?" said the little red hen. "I will!" said the cow. "I will!" said the dog. "I will!" said the mouse. "Well you didn't help me make the loaf," said the little red hen, "In fact, you didn't help with anything. So I'll eat it all myself." And so she did. Every time I tell that story, I tell it a little differently. And it doesn't matter how you tell the story. Do you remember, we acted it out. Sometimes you might even tell a story by no words, just showing the story with actions, or you may choose to sing it. But I'm going to pause the video now, and I'd really like you to tell that story to someone, or your talk-teddy, because they're going to love to hear that story. And when you're done, come back and we'll have to celebrate your amazing work. Time to work now, though. So how was that? How did you tell the story? However you did it, well done. And we've also enjoyed exploring how determined and hard-working the little red hen was. Well when we recycle that story next week, we're also going to recycle characters and change the ending, so lots of challenges ahead.
