Explanation: How beans grow

﻿Hi, everyone. My name is Ms. Toole, and I love to read books. I love to read story books. I love to read information books, and I love to read books that have no words in, so you're just looking at the pictures and creating your own story. In this unit, we have been exploring explanation. And today, we are going to be reading our explanation and finding information within the text. Let's have a look at what we're going to be doing today. We're going to start off with a spelling activity. Then we're going to recap our strategy check for when we are reading. We're going to read parts of our explanation together. And then as we've read them, we're going to answer questions retrieving information from the text. So you are going to need a piece of paper or an exercise book, and a pencil for writing down your answers from the question. You will of course going to need your fabulous self and your amazing brain. So pause now while you go and get your resources. And when you're ready to go, press play. Before we start our spelling activity, I want to sing one of our songs from a previous lesson in the unit, which helps us to remember the stages in which a bean grows. So I will do the words, and then I'd like you to sing it back to me at home, and I'll put it all together. You might remember it, but don't worry if not because we're going to go through it anyway. Our spelling focus in this unit is common exception words, and they can also be known as tricky words. Can you remember why we call them tricky words? It's because we can't sound them out. We just got to know them. We look and we say. We look at the word, we say the word. Look at the word, we say the word. Today we're going to be looking at the word, say the word, and spelling the word. Now, when we're spelling tricky words, what do we need to remember? We don't use letter sound. We use the letter name. Because we use a sound, we get less a bit confused when we come to spell them down. Because remember, we can't sound them out, we just got to know them. So, we're going to do our letter names. Let's have a quick practise of our alphabet. We've done tapping on the shoulder. We've done rolling. So now we're going to roll forward and roll backwards. So every time we're doing our letters, we either roll forwards or roll backwards. Okay. Are we ready? Starting with A, let's go. A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. I. J. K. L. M. N. O. P. Q. R. S. T. U. V. W. X. Y. Z. Well done, and I hope you memorise your alphabet. So now I'm going to show you a word. Remember, I want you to look at it, I want you to say it, and we're going to spell it together. Now before we do, we need to just go through some of our things to remind us what we do when we're reading and when we're finding information. So when we're reading, if we get to a word that we're not too sure of, we can look at the sound, say the sound, and blend the sounds back together. We can the go back, read the sentence, check it make sense with the word that we put in, and then carry on. When we come to answer our questions and retrieve information, we need to focus on three skills. We need to read the question and look for any keyword that link to our text. We then need to go back and scan the text to find those keywords. And then our final thing is we need to find the information to answer the question. So our three skills are look for keywords in the question, scan the text to find those keywords, and then find the information for our answer. So let's have go together. So this is our first part that we're going to read together. So put your reading finger on the screen, and follow as I read, because I might need your help if I come across a word that I'm not to sure how to say. So are you ready? Hi. My name is Professor Has Bean, and I am here to explain to you how beans can... Ooh, I'm not too sure. Let's use our strategy. Look at the sounds, say the sounds. Guh-ruh-ow. Guh-ruh-ow. Blend them together, grow. Read back the sentence. And I am here to explain to you how beans can grow. That makes sense. How beans can grow from a single bean to beanstalk. So that is our first part of text. So now let's have a look at the question linked to that part of the text. The question says, what is the name of the professor? Hmm. So we have a look at our answer starter. It says he is called Professor, and then we have to think about it. So look at the text. We have professor. What could we have? Let's come back to find the word professor. Professor. Find that keyword, then find your information. Pause the screen now to answer. And then when you're done, you can press play. Did you manage to find the answer? The answer was Professor Has Bean. I've underlined it and put it in bold for you. So what is the name of the professor? Hi, my name is Professor Has Bean. So the answer was Has Bean. Okay, let's have a look at our next slide. Ooh. The question says, what does the single bean grow into? What does the single bean grow into? And in this question, we've got three answers to choose from. Does it grow into a tree, which is pink, a beanstalk, which is the blue, or a baked bean, which is the purple? Pause now to have a think. And then when you know your answer, you can press play to carry on. Have you got your answer written down? Let's have a look. The answer is a beanstalk. What does a single bean grow into? Beans can grow from a single bean to a beanstalk. The answer is beanstalk. Well done if you've got the answer. Now we've got some more text to read, so put your finger on the first word, and let's read together. Remember, when we're not too sure of a word, we can use our strategy of look at the sound, say the sounds, blend them back together. Let's go. First, the bean is planted in the ground, about two centimetres below the surface. Full stop. If the... Ooh, I'm not too sure of this word. Let's sound it out together. Ss-oi-l. Ss-oi-l. Blend it together, soil. Let's go back and read our sentence. If the soil, that sounds right, is damp and warm, then the bean will come to life, causing roots to grow... Let's have a look. Duh-ow-n. Duh-ow-n. Blend it back together. Down. Let's read the sentence. If the soil is damp and warm, then the bean will come to life, causing roots to grow down. That does make sense. And the shoot comes up above ground. Super. Let's have a look at our question based on what we have just read. What are the best soil conditions to grow the bean? Now our keywords here are soil and bean. We're thinking about what does a soil need to be to grow the bean. Pause the tape to have a go at your answer. And when you've got it, press play. Let's have a look. So our keywords was soil. So let's see if we could find the answer. What are the best soil conditions to grow the bean? If the soil is damp and warm, then the bean will come to life. So our answer was damp and warm. So we found that keyword soil, and it's right next to it, soil needs to be damp and warm. Well done. Thank you for joining in. Let's have a look at our next one. We're going through some more reading, so finger on the slide. Let's follow together. When the time is right, little flowers appear which attract bees. Full stop. The bees visit the flowers and leave a powder, puh-ow-duh-er, powder behind called pollen, which amazingly causes the flower to turn into a bean. Let's have a look at our question. Which word was used to describe the flowers? So our keyword in this sentence is flowers. So have a look back through the text. Scan to find the word flowers, and see if you can find the word, which we call adjective, that describe the flowers. Pause now. And then when you've got your answer, you can press play. Did you manage to find the word that describe the flower? Let's have a look. Which word was used to describe the flower? When the time is right, little flowers appear which attract bees. So the word used to describe the flowers was little, little flowers. Now I've got a challenge for you to do at home. So you need to have a go at putting these events in order, from the first thing that happened when you got a bean to the last. So on the pink we've got, the bees leave their pollen behind. In the white, we've got the bean is planted. And in the green, we've got the sunlight shines on the shoot and the plant is able to make food. So pause on this screen, so you can see the different steps. Put them in order by writing them down. And then when you've got your answer, you can press play to carry on. How did you find the challenge? Were you able to put the different steps in the right order? We'll quickly go through the answers now. So the first thing that happens is that he bean is planted. Then the next thing that happens is the sun shines and the plant is able to make food. And the last thing that happened in that sequence is the bees leave their pollen on the flowers.
