﻿Hello, everyone. It's Mrs. Hardisty here with your English lesson for today. In today's lesson, we are going to be thinking all about the three main types of sentence. I wonder if you already know the three main types of sentence. We have simple sentences, compound sentences, and do you know what the other one is? It's complex sentence, and we're going to find out all about them in our lesson. So let's start. Here is what we're going to do in today's lesson. We're going to start by looking at clauses and then this is going to help us know what a simple sentences is and practise writing them, a compound sentence and then, finally, complex sentences. For this lesson you will need some paper and pencil, so please make sure you have them, and then we can start. So what are clauses? A clause is a group of words which contain a verb which is a doing word, remember? ♪ A verb is a doing word ♪ ♪ If you do it, then the word is a verb ♪ And a subject. And the subject is the noun that is doing that thing. So here are two examples of clauses, the boat's sailed, what's my subject? Boat. And what the verb? Sailed. And then our other example, the man cheered. Our subject is man, and our verb is cheered. Now, you can split clauses into two different types. A main clause. Show me your muscles, main clause. And then a subordinate clause, which helps our main clause. Now, our main clause makes sense by itself. And so the man cheered is an example of a main clause. A subordinate clause cannot make sense by itself. When he saw the mountain bow down. That doesn't make sense by itself, but when you attach it to a main clause, it does make sense. So there were three different sentence types. My turn, your turn. Simple. Simple. Compound. Compound. Complex. Complex. And knowing about clauses will help you know what sort of sentence you have read or written. So a simple sentence has just one main clause. Just one. A compound sentence has two main clauses, and they are joined with a conjunction. And then our complex sentence has a main clause and then a subordinate, helping clause. And remember, a clause is a group of words with a verb and a subject. So let's see if we can remember what we've just learned. What is a clause? Is it, one, a group of words containing a noun? Two, a group of words containing a verb and a subject. Three, a group of words containing an adjective. Or four, a sentence. Which one is it? One, two, three, four. Point to it, show me with your fingers. A clause is a group of words containing a verb and a subject. Okay, which of these is the odd one out? The boat sailed. Fausto got into a boat. He sailed across the ocean. Or, as the sun rose into the sky. Hmm. Three of them are main clause. And one of them is that subordinate, helping clause. It doesn't quite make sense by itself. Which one is that? Can you point to it? It's number four. So that is a subordinate clause. That's the odd one out. So now we're going to think about simple and compound sentences in a bit more detail. Why is this a simple sentence? The boat sailed across the waves. It's got one verb.Wwhat's the verb? We've already come across it. Sailed. It's got a capital letter and full stop. Can you point to them now? It's got one main clause, makes sense by itself. And there we go. So this is a simple sentence. Simple sentences are really useful in our writing, we just don't want every sentence to be a simple sentence. Why is this a compound sentence? Fausto tried to own the sea, but the sea could not be tricked. But it has two main clauses. Fausto tried to own the sea. The sea could not be tricked. And each of them make sense by itself. They're joined with a coordinating conjunction. In this case, the word that joins them is the word but. And the coordinating conjunctions that you would use are but, or, or and. And it's a sentence so it has a capital letter and a full stop. Now, why is this not a compound sentence? Fausto tried to own the field and the forest. Wow. Got the word and in so it must be a compound sentence, isn't it? Well, let's just think a compound sentence needs to have two main clauses. I've got one, Fausto tried to own the field. Yes, that's a clause 'cause it's got a verb in it, tried. But the bit that goes after the word and, the forest, well, that's not a clause. It doesn't have a verb in. So even though I've used the word and, this is not a compound sentence. So I've got three compound sentences here, but I've made some mistakes in them. Some of them aren't compound sentences 'cause they don't have the main clauses. Some of them are almost correct, but the punctuation is wrong. So let's just look down at the bottom. We've got our coordinating conjunctions, but, or, and and. And can you see before the words, but and or we have a comma. Can you do that for me? Comma. We always need to use a comma before the words but and or. So can you now pause the video, write these compound sentences out and then edit them so that the punctuation is correct, and so that they do properly have two main clauses. I'll read them out to you first. Fausto demanded that the sea was his, but the wise ocean told him the truth. The peculiar man wanted to earn a mountain and the sea. He took many natural things, but not the ocean. Pause the video and edit these sentences. And I'll see you in a bit. Let's see if you got the right things. So first of all, did you spot the mistakes? And the first one I've got the word but, I've got some missing punctuation, haven't I? And then in my second and third examples, I didn't have two clauses. The second part, after my conjunction, wasn't a clause. The sea isn't a clause because it doesn't have a verb. And not the ocean, also isn't a clause. So this is how I edited them. I put my comma in before the word but for my first sentence. And then in my second sentence, I wrote it out like this. The peculiar man wanted to own a mountain and he wanted the sea to belong to him. So now, there's definitely our two main clauses. Number three. He took many natural things, but he did not take the ocean. So check to see if you have done something similar, make sure that your sentences have two main clauses and that you've got the correct punctuation. So you've had a look at mine. Now, I would like you to write your own compound sentences about these two pictures. And remember, they need to have two main clauses, and then they're joined by either the word but, or, or and. And if you're going to use but or or, they need to have a comma before that. So it could be, Fausto stepped into the boat, comma, but he did not realise what was going to happen to him. So can you pause your video now and write your compound sentences with your two main clauses in each? I'll see you in a bit. Well, I'm sure you've written some brilliant sentences. These are two that I wrote. Fausto stepped onto a boat and he sailed out to sea. The sea refused to belong to the strange man, but he did not understand why. Did you manage to have two main clauses in your sentences? So now, we're going to focus on complex sentences. Why is this a complex sentence? The majestic ocean swallowed Fausto up as he stamped his irate foot on it. Now, what did we remember about complex sentences from a previous lesson? Well, it always has a main clause, and our main clause in the sentence is the majestic ocean swallowed Fausto up. And then it has one subordinate clause. And so our subordinate clause in this is as he stomped his irate foot on it. 'Cause that bit doesn't make sense by itself. And this time we used the joining word called subordinating conjunction. Subordinating conjunctions. And the ones that you would probably use are the words as, when or because. And of course, because it's a sentence it still has capital letter and a full stop. So there are some rules when it comes to using subordinating conjunctions. If you start your sentence with a subordinate clause, and you'll probably be starting that subordinate clause with as, when, because, at the end of the clause you need to have a comma. If that subordinate clause goes at the end of your sentence, and so the subordinating conjunction as, when and because, are probably going to come somewhere in the middle, then you don't need a comma before it. Now, you're going to edit my mistakes out again. So I've got three complex sentences. Two of them start with a subordinate clause and then have the main one. And then one of them starts with the main clause and then finishes with the subordinate clause. Now, remember those rules about when you need the comma and when you don't, because I've made a mistake in each one. Number one, when Fausto took the boat out, he did not know what would happen to him. Number two, the ignorant man stamped his foot because he wanted to show his power. Number three, as he fell into the water, Fausto knew his fate. So I'd like you to pause the video, write out the sentence and put in a comma where it should go or take the comma out if you don't think it should go. Pause the video now. So here are the answers. When Fausto took the boat out, comma, that's the end of my subordinate clause, he did not know what would happen to him. Number two, the ignorant man stamped his foot because he wanted to show his power. You don't need a comma there because the subordinate clause has come second. And then lastly, as he fell into the water, comma, Fausto knew his fate. So whenever you're using a complex sentence in your writing, you need to make sure that you're using your commas correctly. So now it's your turn to try it. I would like you to write two complex sentences about these pictures. So they need to have a main clause and a subordinate clause. You might want to start your sentences with the words when, or as, and that will help you write your subordinate clause. So when Fausto sailed out to sea, or as he shook his fist. Don't forget those commas. Pause your video and write your sentences. Okay, let's see what I wrote. So I wrote, as Fausto spoke to the sea, comma, he was lying. What did you write for yours? And then I wrote, the irate man shook his fist when the sea refuse to belong to him. And because I put my subordinate clause second, didn't need any commas. So let's recap what we've done today. We have thought about what makes a clause, and then we've used that knowledge to think about simple sentences, compound sentences with our two main clauses, and complex sentences.
