The Fate of Fausto - Narrative Writing

﻿Hello everybody, it is Mrs. Hardisty here, with your English lesson for today. In our lesson, we are going to be thinking all about the different things Fausto says, in the story of, "The Fate of Fausto." Can you remember anything that he says? And then we're going to write it down, and think about how to accurately punctuate it. So, when you're ready, let's get started. Here's what we're going to do in today's lesson. We're going to start with thinking about some commands and statements that Fausto might've said. And then we're going to look at our rules for speech punctuation, what the punctuation looks like, and how we use it accurately. And then we're going to practise using that speech punctuation. For this lesson, you will need some paper and a pencil. So, please make sure you have those things, and then we can start our lesson. We'll begin with Commands and Statements. Now, remember, a statement is a simple sentence that states a fact, and a command is where you order, you boss someone around. So, I'd like us to think about one statement and one command that Fausto might say in the story. At this point, we're not going to think about any speech punctuation. We're just going to think about the words that he said. So, what might he say about himself? And what might he boss someone else around to do. Here are my ideas. So, he might say in a statement, "nature is not as important as me." Or he might say something like "everything belongs to me." And then, his command might be, "bow down to me, mountain!" So, what I'd like you to do now, is write one statement on one line, and then one command perhaps starting with "bow," or "admit" on the next line. Can you pause your video, and write the statement and command. So, now we've talked about the words that he said, let's think about how he says that. So, instead of using the word "said" we could use a synonym, a different word for "said," a different verb. So, "shouted" or "yelled." I'll make you think of an adverb. Remember those "-ly words" that describe how something is done. So, how did he shout it? Or how did he yell it? Can you think of some different words that means "said" that describe how Fausto said these things. These are my ideas. So, we could have "cried loudly." "Bow down to me, mountain!" Fausto, cried loudly. We could have barked aggressively. A bark is very short and loud. We could have "bellowed dramatically" bellow is a much bigger sound. And if you are dramatic, it means that you're often using your whole body to say it. "You must obey me!" Bellowed Fausto dramatically. And then, "demanded selfishly," "bow down to me, mountain!" Fausto demanded selfishly. So, these are examples of really ambitious, exciting, verbs and adverbs that we can use when writing speech. Now, I've got some verbs and adverbs that I think do not work. Can you work out, why do these verbs and adverbs not work? "Muttered sadly." Why does that not work, "muttered sadly." It's because that's not how he would talk, is that he wouldn't mutter quietly to himself. And he's certainly not sad about it. So, when we choose our speech words, we must be careful to show off our character, to the reader. We need to show Fausto's character to the reader. He's not someone who's quiet, and he's certainly not someone who thinks sadly about another character. Now, can you work out what is missing from this piece of writing? When he reached the mountain, Fausto spoke to the mountain in a loud voice. "Mountain, you are mine!" He bellowed selfishly. "No, I am my own," replied the mountain bravely. Can you work out what's missing? So, we need speech punctuation, to show our reader where the speech is. It's very hard to know which words the characters actually speak if you don't have speech punctuation around it. And then, this helps a read to understand and read out loud or imagine the proper voice whenever they have got to the speech part of the sentence. So, now we're going to look at our rules, "speech punctuation." But let me introduce you to the speech sandwich, which you may have come across before, or might look really unusual, but it's really helpful for helping us know the rules for when we are punctuating speech. So, you can see we've got the ingredients for a cheese and tomato sandwich. We've got bread, tomato and cheese. And all of these represent different parts of our punctuation and sentence. And the order really helps us make sure that we're following the rules correctly. So, let me show you what I mean. So, our bread is the outside of my assignment, doesn't it? And in a sentence, that has speech in it, we have these punctuation marks called inverted commas. You might've heard them referred to as speech marks. Their proper name is inverted commas. Can you say that for me, "inverted commas." Now, often called speech marks. And you might also have heard them spoken of as a "66" and a "99," because they look little bit like teeny tiny 66s and 99s. Now the "66" always goes at the start, like on your first piece of bread and the "99" always goes at the end. So then, we have our sentence punctuation, the normal punctuation that you would have for the sentence that your character speaks. So, we always start with a capital letter, and then you will finish it with a full stop, a question mark, an exclamation mark, or a comma. And then the words that your character speaks, are the cheese in the middle of the speech. So, we have to have all the other punctuation correctly in place, and then the speech goes in the middle. So, here's an example. And let's see if we can identify all those parts of our speech sandwich. "I am my own," said the mountain confidently. Now, can we spot those inverted commas? The "66" and the "99." Where are they? There they are. So, they're around the speech, and they're the first thing and the last thing around that. Just like our bread. Now, what about our sentence punctuation? Oh, yes. I've got a capital letter there. And because the rest of my sentence carries on after my inverted commas, I don't have a full stop, I have a comma. And then, finally, we have the speech in the middle. And once you've done all of that, then you can describe "who said it" and "how they said it." So, in this sentence, we've got, "said the mountain confidently." Now, I've got four sentences here. At any moment going to ask you to pause the video, and to accurately put in all the punctuation correctly for each one to show where the speech is. So, we've got one. "Mountain, you are mine!" Fausto bellowed loudly. Number two. "No, I am my own," replied the mountain bravely. Number three. "Did you not hear me?" "Did you not hear me?" What kind of sentence is that, what punctuation might you need? "The irate man retorted." And then number four. "You are in charge and I am yours," admitted the mountain. Now, for each of these one, I think the most important thing is to first of all, work out, which are the words that are spoken by the character. You have to imagine if this was a cartoon with a speech bubble, which words would go in that speech bubble? So, in the sentence, "mountain, you are mine!" Fausto bellowed loudly. Which words does he say? "Mountain, you are mine." And then, in sentence number two, which is the words that he says, "now I am my own." So, the first thing you need to do is, work out which of the words that are spoken. And then, for each one you need to put your "66" and then your capital letter, then the speech. And then the comma, or the question mark, if it's a question or the exclamation mark, if it's something really exciting and then your "99." Once you've got those around your speech, you can finish the rest of your sentence, with "who was saying it" and "how they were saying it." Pause your video, and edit each these sentences. Well done, everyone. So, can you now look at the work that you have done and the answers that I have done and check that you have put everything in the correct place. So, look at number one, where are your inverted commas, the speech marks, have you done your capital letter? I used an exclamation mark, and then the rest of the sentence. Number two, inverted commas, capital letter, and then just a comma at the end of the words that are spoken, your "99," and then the rest of the sentence. Number three, inverted commas, capital letter, and it was a question, wasn't it? So, you should have had a question mark at the end of, "did you not hear me?" Your "99" and then the rest of your sentence. And then, finally, number four, your inverted commas, capital letter, "you are in charge and I am yours," comma, our "99," inverted commas and then the rest of the sentence. If you've got anything wrong, go back now and change it. It's very easy to accidentally put your "99" at the end of the sentence rather than, after the words that have been said. So, just make sure particularly that your "99," inverted comma, is in the correct place. So, now let's put into practise those verbs and adverbs that we were thinking about at the start of our lesson. So, I've got these two sentences here and I'd like you to write out everything with correct speech punctuation, and then, add in who said it and how did they say it. So, "mountain, you are mine!" Fausto quietly whispered. That wouldn't be right, would it. What did he say? How did he say it? And then. "No, I am my own," retorted the mountain furiously. No, I don't think that's right either. Can you think of some accurate verbs and adverbs that describe how these characters said these things. So, you're going to write out the whole sentence with all your speech punctuation, and then, who said it and how at the end. Pause your video, and do that now. So, here are what I thought, you couldn't done something different. So, "mountain, you are mine!" He roared boldly. "No, I am my own," answered the mountain meekly. That means very shiny and you're very quiet, and you don't want to disturb anyone, meekly. So, now it's your turn. I would like you to think of your own speech sentence that Fausto and the mountain might have said in these two pictures, and then you're going to write the whole thing. So, speech punctuation, what they said and how they said it. Can you pause your video, and write your ideas now. Well done, everyone, super work. We're going to come back to this again and again, to make sure that we're using speech punctuation properly. So, let's just have a recap of what we've done. We talked about some commands and statements that Fausto might have said. And then we look to the rules for speech punctuation, with our speech sandwich, and then we practised using speech punctuation accurately. You have done really, really well and then bring all these different rules. And as I said, we're going to do more and more of this as we come to write our own versions of this story.
