﻿Hello, it's Ms. Morgan here again, ready for your spelling lesson. Today we're going to be practising and applying the rules that we learned when we added the suffixes, -ful and -less. For example, this necklace is priceless to me. Because remember -less means without. So has no price that you can put on it because it was given to me by somebody special. So the necklace is priceless. Let's get started. Today we're going to revise the rules, first of all, for adding the suffixes -ful and -less. Then we're going to practise and apply those rules. Then I'm going to teach you a brilliant new spelling strategy, one I think you would love. And then finally, we're going to do the spelling test. Remember as before, if you think you want a bit more time to practise, you can pause this lesson and come back to the test later on. As per usual, there's three important things you need: something to write in, a pencil, and of course that brain, get it switched on ready for learning. Pause the video if you need to get these things now. So our key vocabulary for today. We have four keywords. Suffix, root word, noun, adjective. Can you put your hands on your head if you think you know the meanings of some of these words. Yeah, I bet you do. We've been looking at these lots. So remember a suffix is a group of letters at the end of a word that changes the word's meaning. And a root word is the most basic version of a word, no prefixes and no suffixes. And noun is a? A PPT, a person, place or thing. Brilliant. And an adjective, an adjective describes the noun. Here's one root word, delight. Delight is the root word. What happens when we add the suffixes to delight? What happens to the word? Delight becomes delightful. It becomes an adjective. Remember an adjective describes a noun. That's a delightful necklace you're wearing. So delightful is the adjective and necklace is the noun. Ful is a suffix here and delight is the root word. So what happens to the meaning of the word if we add the suffix -ful and -less? What sort of word does it become? Joy becomes joyful. Joyful is an adjective. So we have changed the meaning of the word. Home, when we add -less becomes homeless. Homeless is also an adjective, describes a noun. Now here is the question. Can you add both -ful and -less to every root word? I can hear some of you saying, oh, Ms. Morgan, remember last lesson we found some very strange words when we did that. You can't, but it's just a case of hearing. So let's try and add -ful and -less to home and let's read them and see what we think. Homeful, homeless. We know homeless is a word. Homeful just doesn't sound right. And that's right. It's not a word. Here is a sentence stem explaining our learning. I'll read it out to you and then I want you to see if you can fill in the gaps with the words below. The words below are suffixes, root word, adjective, our keywords. Get your finger to track as I read.

ful and -less are types of? When we add -ful and -less to the end of a hmm, it becomes an hmm. Pause the video, adding the missing words, say the sentence out loud.

ful and -less are types of suffixes. Brilliant. When we add -ful and -less to the end of a root word, it becomes an adjective. I can hear you all shouting that out. Remember, it's really important to go back to the big picture of all suffixes we have been learning. So you can build up in your mind what to do when you are spelling. Two rules that we've looked at so far is we just add the suffix is -ful and -less. And sometimes if we have a Y at the end of the word, then we replaced the Y with an I an add -ful and -less, as in beautiful or merciless. Now we're going to practise and apply the rules. Here's the root word, help. Can you pause the video and either write down or say the spinning out loud and add -ful and -less to help. Do both words work? Really important to say them out loud so you can hear them. Pause the video. Help becomes helpful, helpful. He was helpful today. Help comes helpless. He was helpless he didn't know what to do. So both words sound like they make sense to me and that's right. We can add both suffixes and they both make sense. Brain, can we try and add the suffix -ful and -less to brain? Write them down or say them out loud. Pause the video now. Did you spot something strange? Brainless? Yes, that works, without the brain. Not thinking about things. Brainful? That doesn't seem to work, does it? Brainful and that's right. It doesn't sound right and it just isn't one of the words. So the root word brain, we can only add the suffix -less. Now we have the root word dread. Can you try and add -ful and -less to it? Write them down or say them out loud. Pause the video. Did you find something funny? Dreadful, yes, it was a dreadful mistake. I had a dreadful day. Dreadless, it just doesn't sound right. And that's right, it isn't right. So with the root word dread, we can only add the suffix -ful. Now you have another go by writing down. Now you have another go by writing down. Can you see if you can add the suffixes -ful and -less to these two root words, forget and harm. Pause the video, write them down. How did you get on? I wrote down, forgetful, forgetless. You can already hear forgetless just doesn't make sense. That's right we can only add the suffix -ful. How about with harm? I added -ful and -less. Harmful, harmless. Yes, I think I've definitely heard both of those being used before. And that's right. You can add -ful and -less. Remember it doesn't matter if you make a mistake. Do you remember what I said yesterday? The more you read and the more you listen to audio stories, the easier to become. And again, if someone points out that you make a mistake, that's really good. They're helping you to learn. We now are going to learn a new strategy. These are some of the strategies you've hopefuly been practising already. Today we're learning a strategy called small to large. There's a clue in the words there. So you write out your first word in your normal handwriting, in your normal size. Below that you write it bigger. And again, even bigger. You can carry on if you want to. Sometimes I do it four, five times. But I always take care writing it slowly and carefully so I get the spelling right. Remember if you can do joined up handwriting, and I think most of you can, this will help you to remember the spellings patterns. Why is this a useful strategy? It allows you to interact with a word. So making sure that you are properly looking at how it's spelled. The shape of the word can help you. I talked about that muscle memory before between practising the handwriting and it will start to link back to your brain and help you with your spelling. And also, it's slow. You're not rushing it. You are taking your time with beautiful, neat handwriting. Now I want you to have a go at practising . Choose four of your spelling words, and practise with the small to large strategy. Remember, take care with your handwriting. Take care to look at the letters. I often say the letter names out loud, U-S-E-L-E, double S spells useless. And I do it again a bit bigger. U-S-E-L-E, double S spells useless. And again, and again. Pause the video, off you go. Now we're on your spelling test. Remember if you want to take more time, you can pause now. Practise your spellings and come back and do it later. Get a clean piece of paper. I want you to write the numbers one to 10 in a list with each number on a new line. Pause, do this now. I'll go by through the spellings one by one. I'll go through the spellings one by one. I'll say it twice and I'll say it in a sentence. Remember, you can pause the video in between each spelling if you want to have a little bit more time. And also just remember to try your best. It's really important. And remember, you can also use that best strategy. You can write out different versions of the word. Number one, beautiful. Beautiful. It was a beautiful day. Number two, forgetful. Forgetful. She was so forgetful. Number three, thoughtful. Thoughtful. He looked at me with a thoughtful expression. Number four, disgraceful. Disgraceful. Your behaviour is disgraceful. Number six, useless. Useless. He was useless at tying his shoe laces. Number seven, fearless. Fearless. She was a fearless explorer. Number eight, defenceless. Defenceless. The antelope was defenceless against the lion. Number nine, powerless. Powerless. Children were powerless to do anything. Number 10, careless. Careless. He was careless with his homework and made lots of errors. Pause the video to check your spellings if you want to. We're going to check our spellings now. Remember tick of correct, change if not. Remember to copy out the correct answer.
