How to Train your Dragon - Mixed outcomes

﻿Hi everyone. My name is Miss Vincent, and I'm going to be teaching you today for this lesson. In today's lesson, we're going to start planning our instructions. And today's instruction planning, is going to be instructions of how to tame a dragon. So how to get close to a dragon and build a relationship of trust, and then how to train a dragon. So you can fly your very own dragon. And we're going to use clips from the film to help us come up with ideas, but we're also going to use our imagination and try our best to be creative. So let's get started with our taming and training instructions. Off we go. So this is our agenda for today's lesson. We're going to start with the writing warmup. And today we're going to be thinking about ordering conjunctions and helping us order instructions. Then we're going to move on to generating ideas. Generating just means coming up with ideas. And we're going to use our imaginations and a little bit of clips from the film, how to train your dragon, to help us come up with some excellent ideas for our instructions. And then finally, we're going to move on to planning our instructions. So for this lesson, you will need an exercise book or a piece of paper. And I think ideally if you can have two pages in a book or two pieces of paper that will really help today. You'll need a pencil or a pen to write with and you'll need your brain switched on and ready to go, ready to focus and learn. If there's anything that you need to go and get that perhaps you don't have ready, then just pause the video, go and get it and then when you come back and you're ready, press play. Fantastic. So hopefully we're all set and ready to go and start our lesson. So time for our writing warmup. For our writing warmup today, I want you to think about instructions for brushing your teeth. How to brush your teeth. I've put four instructions there, to help you brush your teeth, but I've left out a really important part of the instruction. Your job is to add in an appropriate ordering conjunction to each of the instructions for brushing your teeth. So mh, get your toothbrush and carefully put toothpaste on it. What ordering conjunction could I put there? Number two, mh turn on the tap and wet your toothbrush. Number three, mh put your toothbrush in your mouth and gently brush your teeth from side to side, for exactly two minutes. And then finally number four, mh spit the toothpaste into the sink and thoroughly rinse your toothbrush. So I'd like you to pause the video and for each of those instructions, add in an ordering conjunction, that works there. So pause the video, off you go. Okay. Let's check your thoughts. Remember they might not be the same as mine, but might still work absolutely fine there's lots different possibilities. So I started with first, get your toothbrush and carefully put toothpaste on it. Next, turn on the tap and wet your toothbrush. Then, put your toothbrush in your mouth and gently brush your teeth from side to side, for exactly two minutes. And finally, spit the toothpaste into the sink and thoroughly wash your or thoroughly rinse your toothbrush. Okay. So remember, you might have put after that, or you might have put following this, those are all really, really great. They don't have to be the same as mine, as long as they are in the correct order. So you wouldn't start with finally and then have first at the bottom. Would you? So as long as they are in the correct order. Remember if you've got any wrong, that's okay. That's how we learn by making mistakes. So really good job okay So now we're going to move on to generating ideas. And that word generating just means coming up with ideas. In our planning lesson today, we're going to be planning one set of instructions. And our set of instructions today, our first set of instructions, are going to be all about taming and training your dragon. We've come across this word taming before. But just in case anybody's unsure, taming means to make an animal less wild and get it used to being around humans. And in particular, we're going to discuss building trust between human and dragon and then training will be all about flying a dragon. Just like Hiccup does in the film and you can see in the picture, is the moment where Toothless finally trusts Hiccup and we'll see that in a clip in a moment as well. So before we watch any clips or we think about anything to do with the film itself, I want you to think about using your imagination to think about how we could build trust with our pet dragon. So what steps do you think you would need to take to build trust with a dragon in this world that Hiccup lives in? So I'd like you to pause the video and you can make a little mind map within the middle, how to build trust and then you can think of lots of different ideas that you can come up with about how to build trust with the dragon. I want you to come up with your own ideas and then we'll watch a little bit of the clip to think about what happens in the film and how Hiccup gets Toothless' trust. So pause the video and have a go at coming up with your own ideas about how you could build trust with a pet dragon off you go. Okay. Really fantastic so now let's have a little watch of some scenes from "How To Train Your Dragon" This isn't one long consecutive scene from the film I've taken small bits here and there that show us and how Hiccup worked to build trust with Toothless let's watch I hope you enjoyed watching those scenes now that we have watched, I wonder what different things we identified while watching about how Hiccup built trust with Toothless I'd you to pause the video and write down some notes about what Hiccup did to get Toothless' trust to become friends with Toothless. Now you might want to pause the video and jump back and watch the clip again. And that's absolutely fine. So you might want to jump back, watch the clip pause the video and then write down your notes or just pause the video and write your notes press play when you're ready to check some answers. Fantastic. I wonder what you spotted in the clip I'm going to share with you some of the things that I spotted. First and foremost it looked like it was very important to not rush. So I've written don't rush as very important to building trust with a dragon. Next I've written, sit and wait near the dragon let it come to you cause that's what Hiccup did isn't it he just sat there and waited for Toothless to come to him. Then I've written let the dragon choose what game you play together. So Hiccup was drawing and then Toothless went off to get a branch, to do some drawing as well. So the dragon chose what they did together if the dragon growls listen as it's telling you to stop, because did you notice whenever Hiccup's foot went near that line, the growl got louder, and if you've completed the previous writing unit on the buildup of how to train your dragon, we saw a lot about growling there as well. That meant stop. I don't like it so that was another thing I noticed and then finally I thought the last thing that we saw just like we can see in the picture, wait patiently with your handout and let it come to you. So the dragon will show you when it is ready to be friends I wonder if you spotted any of those things excuse me, as well. Okay. Let's move on to the next section of our instructions, which are all about training a dragon to fly. So to be your personal pet that you can fly on how cool would that be? So before we watch the clip, I want you to think about what steps do you think you would need to take to train a dragon to fly. So pause the video, and use your creativity and imagination to think of your own steps, that you might need to take to get a dragon to fly for you. So pause the video and have a think. Okay. So maybe you've written down some notes hopefully about what you think you might need to do in order to get a dragon to fly with you on its back, just like Hiccup is doing on Toothless. So now we're going to watch the clip or we're going to watch a clip again of some short bits of what Hiccup does when he tries to fly with Toothless to help us get some more top tips about training a dragon to fly with you on its back. Let's watch.

Fantastic. So hopefully you enjoyed watching that clip So you might want to pause the video now and take some notes about different things that you noticed Hiccup did to train Toothless to fly. If you're feeling a little bit unsure, I would recommend skipping back in the video and watching the clip one more time and then pausing to take down your notes. So you might be writing notes already or you might be going back, but pause the video now and press play when you're ready to check your answers. Okay. I wonder what you notice Here are some of the things that I noticed that Hiccup did before he was able to fly on Toothless' back. So he created a purpose-built saddle and when I say purpose-built it means is specially made for Toothless' back. I feel like no two dragons are the same we've seen there are lots of different types of dragons. So the saddle will need to be built, especially for the type of dragon that you have as a pet, get on the Dragon's back and hold on tightly. Very important you don't want to fall off if you fall off you may need to make adjustments to your saddle. We saw that Hiccup had to change something to do with his saddle to make sure that he was hooked on just in case he fell off and then hook runway and then practise until you are both more confident potentially you could do that tied onto something like Hiccup did so it's a little bit safer. Now we're going to move on to taking our notes, the notes from our imagination. So what we thought we might do to train and tame a dragon and also the notes from what we saw in the video clips to plan out our instructions. So the first thing I'd like you to do is to take your second piece of paper or the second page in your book and split it in two by drawing one line down the middle just like this, pause the video and draw your line. Okay great so we hopefully have all got a line down the middle and now on one side, I'd like you to write the heading Taming and on the other side, I'd like you to write the heading Training. This will be where you will put your notes in a correct order for your instruction. So pause the video and write your two headings. Okay, fantastic. So these headings are going to help us So I'd like you to look back at your mind map that you made about taming the combination of notes from your ideas and what you saw in the video clip and put your notes in the correct order for what you think you need to do in order to tame a dragon. They don't need to be full instructions yet but in the next lesson that we're going to be writing, but for now you can keep them as notes. So for example I made lots of different notes around my thinking about building trust and I'm going to put them in the correct order. So first of all I wrote don't rush and I think that's going to be my first point that I'm going to tell my reader. Then my second point was sit and wait near the dragon and let it come to you. Then I think after that, we let the dragon choose the game. Then you must make sure that you listen to the growls because they mean stop and then my final step in my instructions is going to be waiting with your hand held out and letting the dragon come to you but in your steps that might be slightly different based on your notes. So look at your notes that you made on your mind map and you can number them, put them in the correct order and then to have it nice and neat, write them up in the correct order for your instructions on the side of your page that says Taming So pause the video and do that now. Okay. Really well done and now we're going to do the same thing for Training. So we're going to look at our mind map of all the notes that we made, and we're going to number those notes to show the order in which those steps need to be taken, to be successful in training the dragon so for example from my notes I would put creating a saddle as being the first thing that I need to have getting on the Dragon's back and holding on tightly is my second instruction that I'm going to write. My third point is going to be about if you fall off, you need to make adjustments. That means changes to your saddle. And then my fourth and final point is going to be about practising until you are both more confident. I'm going to write a note about perhaps wanting to be tied onto something so pause the video and do that for your notes about training. Okay. Really well done. So now we have a full plan for these instructions on taming and training a dragon and in upcoming lessons, we're going to write this set of instructions for these two aspects, and then we're going to move on to planning about feeding your dragon and getting your dragon to go to sleep about bedtime routine.
