The Gingerbread Man

﻿Hello, everyone, it's great to see you. Now, in today's lesson, I have brought someone very special with me. I wonder if you can guess who. Now the special visitor to our lesson today looks... He's a sort of golden colour, and he feels quite hard, quite rough and a little bit bumpy on one side and smoother on the other. He smells Hmm, quite sweet with a little bit of spice. Have you worked out who it might be? uh, it's a gingerbread man. I hope he doesn't run away. Now I've told you what he looks like. And I've told you what he smells like, and how he feels. I wonder what he sounds like. Well right now, he's not making any noise. But if I were to snap him, that's a bit of a clue. He makes a snap noise, doesn't he? And how does he taste? Should I try him? Hmm, he's yummy, he tastes quite similar to how he smells. What's your favourite food? When you've thought of your favourite food, could you have a go describing it using all five of your senses? Can you tell me what your favourite food looks like? What your favourite food smells like? What your favourite food feels like? What your favourite fruits sounds like? And what your favourite food tastes like. In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or some paper, just anything to write on, a pencil. And as always, your brain. You can pause the video now while you go and get them. In this lesson, we're going to start off by singing a nursery rhyme. Then we're going to map the story. And finally we'll use our maps to tell the story. First, it's time to sing. In Lesson One, we sang the nursery rhyme "If You're Happy and You Know It" and today I'm going to teach you a little song that uses that tune. So I'm going to sing the rhyme first, and then you're going to sing the line. So it starts like this. ♪ I am running just as fast as I can ♪ ♪ I am running just as fast as I can ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can ♪ ♪ No you cannot catch me ♪ ♪ No you can catch me ♪ ♪ I'm as fast as can be ♪ ♪ I'm as fast as can be ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can. ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can ♪ Should we try that all together? ♪ I am running just as fast as I can ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can ♪ ♪ No you cannot catch me ♪ ♪ I'm as fast as can be ♪ ♪ I am running as fast as I can ♪ Now we're going to create our story map. The Gingerbread Man. Now, we have to think back to how the story starts. Once upon a time, there was a little old lady and a little old man. So I'm going to draw those characters first. And my drawings are just really, really simple to help me remember. So we've got a little old lady and a little old man, and they've lived together in a house. So I'm going to draw the roof of their house. One day, the little old lady said, I'm going to bake a gingerbread man. She makes and she pressed and she put the dough in the oven. But then, she had a knocking from inside the oven, "open the door", and out jumped the gingerbread man. So I'm going to draw the gingerbread man. Now gingerbread men are a little bit trickier to draw than just simple smiley faces for the old man and the old lady, but I'm going to try my best. So I'm going to draw his head, I'm going to come down and draw both of his arms and both of his legs. So there I have the gingerbread man. And that's the first part of our story. Now when she sees the gingerbread man, she says, "stop!" And he starts to run, the gingerbread man starts to run and he sings that song that we all remember, ♪ Run, run as fast as you can ♪ ♪ You can't catch me ♪ ♪ I'm the gingerbread man ♪ ♪ The old man can't catch me ♪ ♪ And you can't catch me ♪ And he ran, and he ran until he came to a cat. So I'm going to draw my cat, I'm going to draw the round head, just some pointy little ears. And I'm going to draw some whiskers. And that was the action we used for the cat. So I'm going to draw some whiskers and that's going to help me remember that the first animal the gingerbread man came to was the cat. "Stop!" Said the cat. The gingerbread man says again, ♪ Run, run as fast as you can ♪ ♪ You can't catch me ♪ ♪ I'm the gingerbread man ♪ ♪ The old man can't catch me ♪ ♪ The old lady can't catch me ♪ ♪ And you can't catch me ♪ And he carries on running until he comes to a dog. Now I'm going to have to think a little bit about how to draw the dog. Okay, I'm going to call the dog like this. It's a bit like a dog. I know it's meant to be a dog, so that's okay. When he gets to the dog, the dog says, "Stop!" But the gingerbread man says, ♪ Run, run as fast as you can ♪ ♪ You can't catch me ♪ ♪ I'm the gingerbread man ♪ ♪ The old man can't catch me ♪ ♪ The old lady can't catch me ♪ ♪ The cat can't catch me ♪ ♪ And you can't catch me ♪ Now I've drawn the first three sections of the story, the first three drawings in our story map. What I would like you to do now is pause the video, and I would like you to draw your first three sections of the story. If you want to, you can use mine and you can do the same drawings as me, or you might choose to draw some different ones. Now, after he had run away from the dog, he ran and he ran until he came to a cow. I'm running out of space, I'm going to do my arrow pointing down a little bit. He came to a cow. So we remembered our cow, didn't we? By putting horns on our cow so I'm going to draw horns on my cow and the cow said, "stop!" But the gingerbread man didn't stop and he sang his song again. ♪ Run, run as fast as you can ♪ ♪ You can't catch me ♪ ♪ I'm the gingerbread man ♪ ♪ The old man can't catch me ♪ ♪ The old lady can't catch me ♪ ♪ The cat can't catch me ♪ ♪ The dog can't catch me ♪ ♪ And you can't catch me ♪ So he ran and he ran until he came to a river. I'll just draw some water, and a fox. A sly fox. Now for my fox, with the other animals, I've only drawn the head. But for my fox, I'm also just going to draw the tail and his body so that we remember what happened next. So the fox says jump on my tail, and I'll carry you over the river. And the gingerbread man jumped on his tail. So I'm going to draw a very small gingerbread man on his tail. What happened next in the story? Jump on my back, said the fox, I'm sinking in the water, and the gingerbread man jumped on his back. So I'm going to draw my fox again. With his tail. But the gingerbread man isn't going to be on his tail anymore, the gingerbread man is going to be on his back. And then he jumps. Where does he jump next? He jumps on to his head. Jump on my head, said the fox, I am sinking in the water. So the gingerbread man has jumped from his back onto his head. Now I have drawn the gingerbread man on the fox's tail, the gingerbread man on the fox's back and the gingerbread man on the fox's head. And I would like you to pause your video and have a go at drawing those three sections of the story and if you want to, you can use mine. Now, after the fox had told the gingerbread man jump onto his head, he says, jump on my nose, I'm sinking in the water. And the gingerbread man jumped on his nose. And now the fox is going to shake his nose. So I'm going to draw the fox's head a little bit differently now. He's going to shake his nose, and he's going to open his mouth. I'm going to draw big teeth. And, snap! That was the end of the gingerbread man. So to show that that was the end of the gingerbread man, I'm going to draw my gingerbread man. And I'm going to do a great big cross through him because that was the end of the gingerbread man. So now I would like you to pause your video and draw the final section of the story. And remember, you can draw like mine, you can copy my drawings, or you might be able to do some drawings that are even better than mine, or you might want to do different drawings. Now we're going to use our story maps to tell the story of the gingerbread man. So you can either use yours and use your finger to point to it or you can use mine on the screen. "Stop!" Said the dog. ♪ Run, run as fast as you can ♪ ♪ You can't catch me ♪ ♪ I'm the gingerbread man ♪ ♪ The old man can't catch me ♪ ♪ The old lady can't catch me ♪ ♪ The cat can't catch me ♪ ♪ And you can't catch me ♪ He ran and he ran until he came to a cow. "Jump on my tail", said the fox, "and I will carry you over the river". The gingerbread man jumped onto his tail. "Jump on my back", said the fox, "I'm sinking in the water". And the gingerbread man jumped on his back. You can see him here on his back. "Jump on my head, I'm sinking into the water". "Jump on my nose", said the fox, "I'm sinking in the water", and the gingerbread man jumped onto his nose. The fox shook his nose and the gingerbread man flew up into the air and down into the fox's mouth. And that was the end of the gingerbread man. Now, I would like you to have a go at pausing the video and telling the story all on your own using your story map, or using my story map on the screen. I really enjoyed using my story map to tell the story. Now I'm going to have to think about what my favourite part of the story map was. I think my favourite part of my story map was the drawing of the dog because I don't know if you remember, but I was feeling a little bit nervous drawing the dog. But after I had drawn the dog, I felt really proud of myself. Can you have a look at your story map and tell me what your favourite part of it was.
