Discussion: Should animals be kept in zoos?

﻿Hello and welcome My name is Mr. Santhanam and this is lesson two of 10 from our discussion unit. And today's learning objective, we are going to be learning a discussion from memory. That means we are going to commit this discussion to memory. We've already heard the discussion between Arnold and Fiona Arnold was against the idea that animals should be kept in zoos and Fiona was for the idea that animals should be kept zoo. I want to ask you a question now, have you ever been to a zoo? What do you remember about it? Wow, I had some great memories then, I remember once I went to the zoo and I saw the giraffes getting fed, they had really long tails and the zookeepers seemed like they were very kind people. There was another time I went to a zoo and there was a lion who seemed very, very sleepy and very, very bored. And that made me feel a little bit sad, because he didn't have very much space to run around in. There was another time, when I visited some ring-tailed lemurs and they were jumping all over the place and being cheeky and they seemed like they were having a great time. There was another time that I saw a polar bear and it was a very, very hot day and it just seemed so tired in the midday heat because polar bears are used to living in very cold icy conditions. And that made me sad. Do you have any memories from the zoo? Let's get started no today's lesson. Okay, here's our agenda for today, the first thing we're going to do is recap some information that we heard in our discussion about should animals be kept in zoos. We're then going to story map our discussion to help us really, really learn it and remember it. And then we're going to step and speak our discussion. And we're going to do that the same way that we would do with a story for this lesson, you're going to need your exercise book or some paper, a pencil, or a pen. And of course, as always you'll need your brilliant brain. Pause the video now while you go and get those things. Wow, Such a speedy Gonzalez today, great job, let's begin. Okay, the first thing we are going to do is we are going to recap the discussion. Let's get our thinking caps on now, can you remember anything from the discussion? Remember, we had Fiona who agreed that animals should be kept in zoos. And we had Arnold who said that animals should not be kept in zoos, and they both had two different opinions. Let's have a little think about what kind of things they said, Oh, this one was against, what happens to animals in zoos who usually need to hunt in the wild. What do you think happens to them? Can you remember? That's right, animals need to hunt, which we call predators. Just get that given there food all the time. They don't need to hunt for anything, so in the wild, they are really used to hunting for things and really being very active and pouncing on their prey and getting lots of exercise in that way. But in zoos, they don't have to hunt for anything. So they just have something given to them. And they don't really need to work for it. So that makes them very, very lazy and very bored. And that can actually make them really, really sad as well, because they're going against what's natural for them. So that's why some people think that it is cruel to keep animals in zoos, because that's just not what they were meant to be doing. Another Against point, so this is one of Arnold's points, what is wrong with animals being locked inside? That's right, Arnold said that it is cruel and that all animals should be allowed to be free. Like they were supposed to be. They've actually been captured and put into these cages. Sometimes, animals have babies in zoos, and then, they are born into captivity, They're born into cages as well, and they never know what life is like outside. And that is very, and some people believe that is really cruel. Lets have have a look at one more. This is another point from Arnold, the question is, but zoos make people happy, What's wrong with that? What do you think? Oh, I heard someone say that even though zoos make people happy, Like in this picture, like in this picture that we can see, often the animals are not happy and they might be performing tricks and they might be doing things that really is not fair. Some people believe that they should be in the wild where they belong and that it is not fair for us to go and look at them in zoos, just because it makes us happy. Okay, now let's have a look at some of the reasons that Fiona gave. The question is, how do zoos protect animals? Now, Fiona made a good point about this one. And there's a clue, If you look at this animal down here, unfortunately, there are lots of types of animals in the world that are being Endangered, that means that their species is dying out. And if they become endangered to the point where all the animals die, that means that they will become extinct. And there will be no more of that animal left. So some zoos are actually protecting animals, because they're actually keeping them safe in the zoo. So Fiona was saying that zoos are really important for that reason. Fiona also mention that some zoos inspire people, do you remember what Fiona said about zoos, inspiring people and encouraging people to do something? What did she say? That's right, she said that zoos encourage people to look after nature and it inspires them when they leave to make sure that they look after nature even more. Do you agree with that? Does this make you want to look after nature more? Let's have a look at one more example. What adjective does the discussion you use to describe a trip to the zoo? So, Fiona said that a trip to the zoo is very, what did she say? do you remember? that's right, Fiona said that a trip to the zoo, can be very relaxing and it makes people happy. Would you use the same adjective for visiting the zoo? Hmm, I wonder, now, that we've recapped some of the information from our discussion, we are going to story mapping the same way that we would with a story. What about I do it, and then you can have it go. Or if you'd like to do it at the same time as me, go ahead. Okay, so to begin my story map, I'm going to write the title at the very top of my page. Should animals be kept in zoos? And it as a question, so it needs a question Mark at the end, today, I am here to discuss an important question. So, today there's not really a majority I can do for today, So I'm just going to write, today, I'm here to discuss, discuss, I can have a question mark, an important question, today? should animals, I'm just going to draw a tiger. You can draw whatever kind of animal you like. Should animals, be kept in zoos, I write here zoos, Yes or no. Should they be kept in zoos or not? This is a tricky question. And again, I'm going to have a question, I can have a question, mark. This is a tricky question. There's not really a picture I can do for tricky. So I'm just going to write tricky. This is a tricky question, with no right or wrong answer, there's no right or wrong answer. Maybe a sad face to show there's no right or wrong answer different people, have different opinions about it. And we can do, a thought bubble for each one. Something is right, Something gets wrong. First of all, let me explain what a zoo is. So underneath, I'm going to do. Firstly, let me explain what a zoo is, in case you have never seen one before so I want to a picture of a zoo, say zoo, in case, you have never seen one before, do some eyes, and I'll draw across over that. A zoo is a place where animals are kept in cages. and then do some bars. And again, I'll do a tiger well behind a fence for people to come and see them. I'll do a person with their eyes looking at the animal often you can see animals like lions. This is my lion. Remember, they do not need to be amazing drawings, lions, tigers do some stripes for my tiger giraffes and elephants. That's my elephant in zoos. Some people think that zoos should be closed. They say this for three reasons. Okay, Now this is where our story map is going to be a little bit different to normal story maps. This is where I'm going to split my page in half. This is going to be For. This is going to be Against. So we go from here to here, to here, to here, and then it goes in two directions. So you could say the For first, or you could say the, or you could say the against points fast, going to write For and Against. Now, Arnold says his first, so, I'm going to do with the against first, first of all, Firstly, I think it is cruel. What should we put for cruel? Maybe we can do an angry person, and a sad animal, first I think it is cruel because the animals are locked up. I'm going to do some bars and a lock as well. That's my lock. The animals want to be free, I can do an animal dreaming of freedom, maybe running around in the sunshine. Secondly, secondly, they argue that, animals who usually hunt can not do this in a zoo so that let's do the tiger hunting, she's hunting, maybe a deer and they cannot do this in a zoo. They are just given food and this makes them lazy and sad. This can be a piece of meat that has just been given to them. Thirdly, people think that it's wrong to make animals suffer just to make humans happy. So let's do animals suffering, they can even be crying, It is wrong to make animals suffer, just to make people happy. Okay, so we've done a whole lot of reasons for Against, and now it is time to do some reasons for, For. So, what do, what other reasons that Fiona gave for why zoos are good, I remember she said, firstly, many zoos, many animals are in danger of dying out. So we'll do an animal, they're in danger of dying out and we'll do a skull to show, how the animal might be dying out. We call that, this becoming extinct and there's not really a picture I can do for, this, So I can just say extinct. 'Cause that is a really important technical word that I do not want to forget. The zoos help keep the animals alive, so I can do a picture of my zoo, and they're keeping the animal alive, and they're being very happy. Number two, Secondly, when people come to zoos, they care more about nature. So let's do a picture of the zoo. People coming to see the zoo and they really start to care. We do a love heart to show that they care. They care more about animals and nature. Let's do a flower for nature, which is so important, so they take better care of nature and maybe I'll put the word important there so I remember that. ♪ important ♪ Number three, thirdly, a trip to the zoo is relaxing and makes people happy. Very simple I can just do a picture of a smiling face there. Now, this is the part that I must not forget, in conclusion, I'm actually going to write conclusion, here, and a bubble around it. This is where I make up my own mind, and I decide, do I believe in For or Against? I believe, I think it's okay I'm for zoos as long, because they make people care more about nature. So they make people care about nature. That's my animal. But zoos should be run well, so the animals can have a happy life. So the zoo, should be run well so the animals can be happy. Okay, now that we've got our story map ready, it is time for us to step up and speak through the story. Again, you can watch how I do it, or you can do it on your own if you like. Okay, now that I've got my trusty story map that has got my introduction part here, it's also got my For points here and my Against points here. I'm going to step up and speak my story. So, first of all, I'm going to step through the story, using my story map, and then after that, I'm going to try and do it without my story map and just the actions and using my voice, projecting my voice and using expression, just to show how I'm feeling. Are you ready? Should animals be kept in zoos? I'm going to step forward because that's part of my discussion, today, I'm here to discuss an important question. Should animals be kept in zoos or not? This is a tricky question, which has no right or wrong answer, lots of different people have different opinions about this. step forward, first of all, let me explain what a zoo is to you if you have never seen a zoo, a zoo is where animals are kept in cages so that people can look at them. I've run out of space. At the zoo, you can see animals like lions, tigers, giraffes, and elephants that you normally wouldn't see in normal life. Step forward. Some people believe that zoos should not exist, and they have three reasons for this. Firstly, they believe that zoos are cruel and that they, and that animals should not, And that animals should not be locked in cages. They believe that animals should be free in the wild animals who are kept in zoos, which are meant to hunt are not able to do so, they are just given their food and this makes the animals lazy and sad. Thirdly, some people do not believe that it is fair for animals to be kept in cruel conditions just to make humans happy. Now let's do my For. This is the one that agrees with the point. Some people believe that zoos are okay and they have three reasons for this. Firstly, they believe that some animals, firstly, some animals are close to being extinct, they are endangered, means there are not many left of them in the world, zoos, help these animals to survive. Zoos, help people to care about nature and the real understanding the importance of looking after nature. Thirdly, a trip to the zoo is relaxing and makes people happy. In conclusion, I think that zoos are okay, they make people care about nature. And as long as the zoos are run well and the animals have happy lives, I think that it is okay. Okay, now that I've had a go at stepping through my story, hopefully you'll have lots more space than I did. I only have this much space to walk back and forth.
