﻿Hello my name is Ms. Morgan, and I am going to be teaching you your spelling lesson today. Today, we're going to be exploring investigating the suffix LY okay. Adding the suffix LY, let's go. Our key vocabulary. These are key words for today. We're going to do my turn, your turn. Suffix, suffix, root word, root word, verb, verb, adverb, adverb. Can you wave at me if you've heard of some of these words before. Lots of hands going up over there. A Suffix is a group of letters at the end of a word that changes it's meaning. Root word this is the most basic version of a word has no prefixes and no suffixes. A verb is a doing or a being word and an adverb describes a verb. Take a picture. Let's see what you can remember. Hands on your nose if you can remember what all these are, suffix, a group of letters at the end of a word that changes its meaning. A root word, the most basic version of a word, no prefixes and suffixes. A verb, a doing or a being word and finally an adverb which describes a verb. So what is a root word? Here we have the words quick and quickly, quick is the root word, has no prefixes and no suffixes, but quickly is an adverb. We have added LY, LY is the suffix. And that is the suffix that we are investigating today. Reminder quick is the root word, quickly is the adverb. What happens to these words when we add the suffix LY? Join here with me, sudden becomes suddenly, gentle becomes gently. Weak becomes weakly. A verb we added LY. We've now got adverbs, suddenly, gently, weakly. Let's see if we can investigate and generate some spelling rules. Spelling pattern number one, here the three root words and three adverbs. The root words are glad, glum, smooth, and the adverbs are gladly, glumly, smoothly. Can you match up the root word to the adverb? Point with your finger now, glad becomes gladly, glum becomes glumly, smooth becomes smoothly. What have we done to the words? We've added LY that's right. We've added the suffix LY to make them adverbs. Let's have a go with these two root words. Beautiful not a beautiful, careful, careful. What happens when we add the suffix LY to these root words? Beautiful becomes beautifully, careful becomes carefully. What have we add to the words? We've added LY. So what's the rule here? You add the LY suffix to the root word, to form an adverb. And we're not adding any other words we're just adding the suffix LY. Now you have a go. Add LY to playful and to repeat it, pause the video say them out loud. Playful becomes playfully and you can see that double L there again. Repeated becomes repeatedly getting something again and again. Remember we're just adding the LY suffix to the root word, to form an adverb. Going back to our mind map, the rule we have just explored is we are just adding the suffix. Spending pattern number two. Two more root words, happy, naughty. Two more adverbs, happily, naughtily. Can you match them up? Happy becomes happily, ooh, something happening there look at that spelling changing. Naughty becomes naughtily, something's happening there. What can you see? Ah, have you spotted that the rule here is we change the Y to an I and we add LY. So we've taken the Y away, we change it to I, and we add LY that makes the adverb. Can you have a go now, remember you change a Y to a I, we add LY. The root words are messy, crazy, busy. Can you have a go at either writing these down with the spellings or can you say the spellings out loud? Pause the video off you go. To be spot what happens? Messy becomes messily. Crazy becomes crazily. Busy becomes busily. That's right we changed the Y to an I and we added LY. Back to our mind map. So the second spelling pattern is we change the Y to an I and we add LY, well done. Spelling pattern number three. Three more root words, terrible, simple, wrinkle. You can remember you can have a wrinkle on your face or your clothes can be wrinkled. Can you add the suffix LY to these words? Say them with me, terrible becomes terribly. It was terribly hot today. Simple becomes simply. It was simply too hard for me to do. And wrinkle becomes wrinkly. Oh no, my shirt is all wrinkly. What's happened here? Have you spotted the rule? I've highlighted the end of miserable and possible. I've highlighted the letters LE. If we add LY, the suffix LY to miserable, it becomes miserably. If we add the suffix LY to possible it becomes possibly. What is the rule here? Shout it at me aah, that's right, you spotted, the rule is we remove the LE and we add LY. And back to our mind map, our spelling pattern number three, the rule is we take away the LE and we replace it with LY, well done. Let's see if we can apply these rules. So reminder, these are three our rules. Just add LY, change the Y to an I and add LY and you remove the LE and add LY. The first word is sharp, sharp. Can you add LY to sharp? Which spelling rule is it? Write it down or say out loud. That's right, we just add LY. We just add the suffix sharp becomes sharply. The next word is simple, add the suffix LY simple, simple becomes simply, but what happens to the spelling? Ah, you spotted it has LE on the end. So we remove the LE and we add LY, simple becomes simply. Final spelling is lazy. Let's add LY to lazy, lazy becomes lazily. Hmm, what rule will happen here? Pause, that's right we changed the Y to an I and we add LY. Lazy becomes lazily, well done. So just remember we've done three rules today in our lesson. We just add the suffix, we replaced the Y with an I we add LY, we take away the LE and we add LY. I'm now going to sent you 10 spelling words for you to practise using these three rules that we've learned about today. You need to make sure you've got a piece of paper and I want you to write the numbers one to 10 in a line with each number on a new line. Pause the video, do this now. Ready, I'm going to go through the spellings one by one. I'll say each spelling twice and I'll put it into a sentence so you understand its meaning. If you need to pause the video, please do 'cause it's really important that you copy these spellings down carefully. Spelling number one carefully, carefully. He carefully plucked the flower. Number two, calmly, calmly. The sea replied calmly. Number three quickly, quickly. He quickly jumped out of the boat. Number four, powerfully, powerfully. He thundered powerfully, "you belong to me." Number five, furiously, furiously. He furiously shook his fist. Those five words have the rule where we just add LY to the root word. Notice though I've put two words that end in fully, carefully and powerfully. Spelling number six, angrily, angrily. He yelled angrily. Number seven, easily, easily. They easily found it. Number eight greedily, greedily. He shouted greedily, "your mine." Those three spellings all have the rule you remove the Y you replaced with an I and you add LY because the root word end in Y. Number nine incredibly, incredibly. It was an incredibly unfair decision. Number 10, terribly, terribly. He missed them terribly. Those your ten spellings make sure you copy them down carefully.
