﻿Hello, it's Ms Morgan again, and today we're going to be looking at L-Y suffixes for our spelling lesson. Let's get started. Well now again today, we're first going to look at key vocabulary, then we're going to investigate and generate rules, and then I'm going to set your 10 spelling words for you to practise. Before we start, you need to make sure you're prepared. Have you got an exercise book or some paper to write in, a pencil, and of course, your brain? Hopefully, it's switched on and ready to do some learning. You might need to go and find a quiet place to do some work. Pause the video now if you need to get these things. After that previous spelling lessons it's really important to make sure you've got the big picture trying to remember where the spelling rules fit in and how they relate to each other That can be quite hard to just remember in your head so we can use a mind map to help you The general rule is we just add the suffix That could be the suffix -ed or like today,

ly. the second rule is often if there's a short vowel sound,

a, -e, -ie, -o, -ou, then we know that we need to double the consonant The third rule is if a word ends in a -Y we tend to replace it with an -i And then finally if a word ends in E you tend to remove the E and just add the suffix Take a little snapshot now keep it in your head for later on. Now, on to our key vocabulary. Four keywords. Can you wave at me if you've seen some of these before? I knew you had! Suffix; Root word; Verb; Adverb. Now, could you put your hands on your shoulders? If you know the meanings of any of these words. I knew you did, well done! A suffix is a group of letters, at the end of a word that changes its meaning Remember that little clue, fix. It -fixes to that root word. And the root word, is the most basic version of a word. There's no prefixes and no suffixes. And then the verb a is a 'doing' or a 'being' word. An adverb, describes a verb Can you remember what the keywords are? Oh! You said them brilliant! Well done. Now what is the root word? Remember what the root word is? Here, I have the word quick and quickly. Can you point to which one is the root word? The word with no suffixes and no prefixes. That's right, it's 'quick'. Well done. And, the suffix is -ly. We have added the suffix, -ly, to quick, to make, quickly. Quick. To quickly. And quickly, is an adverb. It describes a verb He quickly ran down the street Let's try again. What happens to these words, when we add '-ly' to them? Pause the video, and have a go. Say them out loud. Sudden becomes suddenly, gentle becomes gently. Weak becomes weakly. Suddenly could be: Suddenly, he fell down the stairs. He gently stroked the dog. He weakly nodded. So now we will think, and investigate. And generate some rules, for when we're adding '-ly'. Some of you might have spotted some rules already. Already. Pattern one: Glad. Rude. Extreme. I'm glad to see you, you're being very rude. This is extreme weather. When we add '-ly', it becomes; gladly, rudely, extremely. Can you match them to the correct adverbs? Glad, becomes gladly. Rude, becomes rudely. Extreme, becomes extremely. Beautiful, Careful, Vicious. What happens to these words? If you add '-ly' to them pause the video. Say them out loud. Well done. Beautiful, becomes beautifully. Careful, becomes carefully. Vicious, becomes viciously. Is anyone starting to spot what this rule is now? Pause the video, talk to your, stuffed toy, your robot, your dinosaur, your pencil, your pen. Tell them, what the rule is Oh! I heard such good speaking then! That's right! We just add the '-ly' suffix, to the root word to form an adverb We're just adding the suffix. You have a go now. this word says, playful; repeated. Turn them into the adverbs by adding '-ly'. Write them down or, say them out loud. Pause the video. More great work! Let's see how you got on. Playful, becomes playfully. He playfully, leaped out. Repeated, becomes repeatedly. He repeatedly hit his head. The rule here is, we add the '-ly' suffix to the root word to form an adverb. Just as simple as that! And when we look at our spelling mind map, for suffixes, we can see that we are just adding the suffix here. Spelling pattern number two. Happy, Naughty. Can you match them to the correct adverbs? Happy, becomes happily. Naughty, becomes naughtily. What's happened to the spelling here, has something changed? Have you seen something like this before? What's the rule? We change the '-y', to an '-i', and we add '-ly'. And we've definitely seen that rule before. You have a go now. Here are the words; messy, crazy, busy. Add '-ly' to them. Remember our rule. We replaced the 'y' with an 'i'. And we add, '-ly'. Pause the video. Write them down. Well done. Messy, becomes messily. Crazy, becomes crazily. Busy, becomes busily. Did you spot that cheeky thing there? Did you remember to replace the 'y', with an 'i', and then you added '-ly'. Well done. If we go back to our suffix's mind map. You can have a look and see which rule we're looking at there. We know that it's going to be replacing the 'y', with an 'i'. And then, we just add the 'ly'. Spelling pattern Number three. Terrible, simple, wrinkle. Wrinkle could be a wrinkle on your face, or wrinkle in your clothes. What happens when we add '-ly' to these words? Terrible, becomes terribly. Hmm... Have a look at this word. What's happened, something has changed. Have you spotted it? We have removed the 'e'. And added, '-ly'. Does this work for simple? Simple, becomes simply. Yes, it works! We've removed the 'e'. We've added '-ly'. And then finally, wrinkle becomes... wrinkly. Well done. We'll have a go at these two words now miserable. When you're unhappy or possible. Can you add 'ly' to these words? Remember you've got to, remove the 'e'. And, add '-ly' towards the video and have a go. Wow! Well done. So we removed the 'e', yes, that's right. We removed the 'e'. And we add '-ly', and miserable becomes miserably. He miserably looked down at his shoes. Possible, we remove the 'e' and we add '-ly'. Possibly, it could be true. What's the rule here? Pause the video, and stand up and, shout it to the sky. Wow! I can hear so many of you shouting! That's right, we remove the 'e'. And, we add '-ly'. Fantastic! Let's finish with our suffix mind map. The rule we just looked up, we remembered to remove the 'e', and we just added '-ly'. So what spelling rules, have we learned today? We just added '-ly', we've changed the 'y', to an 'i'. We add '-ly' and we removed the 'e'. Excellent. Workout doing these with some words. Here's the word smooth. You add the suffix '-ly', pause, write it down. I'm going look at the rules to help here. I'm actually just going to add '-ly', and smooth, becomes smoothly. Here's the word simple... Pause, add '-ly' to the word. Write it down. I can see there's an 'e', so we're going to remove it and add '-ly'. Simple, becomes simply. Lazy. This time point to the rule, that's going to change. That's right, we changed the 'y', to an 'i', and we add '-ly'. Lazy, becomes? All together, lazily. Excellent. Let's finish off with our mind map. These are the three rules that we have today. We just add the suffix '-ly', we replaced the 'y', with an 'i', and we remove the 'e'. I'm now going to set your 10 spelling words, Make sure you've got a clean piece of paper, I want you to write the numbers one to 10 down in list with each number on a new line. Pause, do this now. I'm going to read the spellings out, one by one. I'll say each word twice and I'll say it in a sentence. So you understand the meaning Spelling number one, carefully, carefully. He carefully tiptoed out into the corridor. Number two, kindly. Kindly. They kindly accepted the offer of a cup of tea. Number three, extremely. Extremely. It was an extremely tiring day. Four, excitedly. Excitedly. which suddenly ran into the room. Number five, painfully. Painfully. This lesson was going to be painfully long. but all of those words, all this have the suffix up '-ly' added to them. Nothing else changed. Number six, hastily. Hastily. He hastily finished his sandwich. Hastily is another word, for doing something quite quickly And these three spellings you can see we have replaced the 'y' with an 'i'. Number seven, bossily. Bossily. "Don't do that!" said Ms Morgan, bossily. Number eight, hungrily. She hungrily ate her food. Number nine, incredibly, incredibly. It was going to be an incredibly difficult test.
