﻿Hi, it's Ms. Morgan again and I'm here to teach your spelling lesson. Today we're going to be learning about more suffixes specifically when we add the suffixs, -ful, F-U-L and -less, L-E-S-S. For example, I might be describing Mr. Peter rabbit here. I might say that he has a beautiful coat on and beautiful is an adjective. Let's get started. On our agenda for today, we're going to look at the key vocabulary first. Then we're going to investigate adding the suffixes

Ful and -less and see if we can generate some rules for using them. And then finally, I'm going to set you 10 spending but I'll go through those spelling words so you know what they mean As per usual, the three things you need. Can you say them with me? An exercise book or paper, something to write with, and of course your brain, you've got that switched on. Well, it's a good time now to go and get the things you need. You might also want to find a quiet place to work. Here are four key words for today. Can you wave at me if you recognise some of them? Oh, I can see lots of you waving that's right. The first one is suffix. Your turn. Root word. I can't hear you. Noun. Adjective. And I do use the word adjective earlier when I was describing Mr. Peter rabbits, his beautiful coat. Suffix is a group of letters at the end of the word that changes the words, meaning, remember the clue is they're in, fixed in suffix. A root word is the most basic version of a word. No prefixes and no suffixes. And I only say PPT a person, a place or a thing. And then adjective that describes a noun. So I was had Peter rabbit here and we were describing his jacket. The jacket was the noun and the adjective was beautiful. A beautiful jacket. Can you remember these words? What are the key words for today? Shout them out at me. Oh, wow. That was quite loud. Suffix, Root word, Noun, and Adjective. Excellent. So what is a suffix? You should really know by now we've been doing lots of lessons around this. Here is a root word. The word is walk. Your turn. Here is the word walked. I added the suffix E D to walk to make it walked, the suffix is -ed and walk is the root word. What happens to the root words when we add a suffix? Here is the first word sudden the next word, paint and heart. Look at what's happened to the words when I added these different suffixes. Read them with me. And then you can pause and have a think. Suddenly Painted Hearts What's happened to the word sudden to become suddenly? Pause the video. Have a think what's happened to the words? That's right. The words meaning has changed. So by adding a suffix, we can change the words meaning. Sometimes it might become an adverb or an adjective. Or even we change the tense. Now I've got lots of different words on the screen here. I'll read them with you. And then I want you to see if you can match them to the root word, to the word we've added the suffix. We've got quickly, cloudy, quick, island, families happily, family, happy, promise, cloud, islands, promised. Can you try and match these words? Match the root words with the root words that have the suffix added and see if he was a double bonus. Can you spot the suffix that I have added? Pause the video. Let's see how you got on. Did you match quick with quickly? And the suffix is -ly, well done. Cloud with cloudy? Suffix? -y Promise? Promised. And the suffix was E D. Family to families. Suffix? -E S Happy to happily. Island to islands. And we've added best suffix -S. We've got all sorts of suffixes here all the ones that we've been practising already.

E S Today, we're going to learn two new suffixes to add to the root word. Remember, this is our mind clap. I put it back here to make sure you've got a picture where the suffixes are and how they all are related. And remember that lots of the rules are the same depending, and it doesn't matter what suffix you use. So you've always got to make steam that before making that link between words. And now I'm telling you learning, here's the root word colour. When I add the suffix -ful to colour the word changes, it becomes colourful. And by adding the suffix -ful it means full off, so full of colour. So I've got a picture of a rainbow to show you that it is full of colour. Colour is the root word. -ful if it's suffix, we know that we are turning the root word into and adjective so remember when we add -ful, it means full off. So colourful means full up colour. Okay so another root word. Fear. Fear When you are scared of something, this time I'm going to add the suffix -less,

less. So fear becomes fearless. Now at the time of pronunciation change is different, even though you would read the word -less, I'm saying fearless it's a slightly different change in how you might say it. When you're fearless, you're not scared of anything. So this person's not afraid of jumping. And the word -less here means without. So without fear. So if you're fearless, you are without fear. Remember the root word has become an adjective really important learning for today. Let's now investigate and generate some rules. Our first spelling pattern. We are going to have a look at adding the suffix -ful. Remember when we got the word -ful, it means full off. So here I've got the word root words, dread, resource, fear. Can you match them to the correct adjectives? Fearful, dreadful, resourceful. Can you point to them on your screen now? Pause if you want to. So dread becomes dreadful. So you are full of dread. Resource becomes resourceful. You've got lots of imagination. You're thinking, Oh, I'm stuck somewhere, but Oh you know what? I'm resourceful. I'm going to go and ask somebody for some help. Or I'm going to go and walk home or I recognise this. And fear becomes fearful, you are fearful of something. You are full of fear. So I'm a little bit fearful of snakes. I don't really mind them, but I don't really love them. So I'm fearful of snakes. Maybe you're fearful of something as well. Can you have a go, can you add the suffix -ful to these root words to make them into adjectives? The first word is peace, success and disgrace at the suffix -ful. Pause. Write it down. How did you get on there's something I'm wondering if you've spotted yet, a sneaky spelling rule. That's here to try and trip you up. Peace becomes peaceful. So full of peace. The church was a peaceful place. It is full of peace in the church. Success becomes successful. Full of success. Yes, it was a very successful day at the sports event. And disgrace, if you're in disgrace you're often in trouble. Or, you've done the wrong thing. He's become disgraceful. So you're full of disgrace. Well, that was disgraceful behaviour. Well, that was a disgraceful thing to do. Now, have you spotted the sneaky thing? We do not have a double L. It is only one L if you read careful this it's a really common spelling error. One that I always used to make. Just be careful with that one. So what is the rule though? When we are -ful, if suffix -ful to words If we add the -ful suffix to the root word, we make an adjective. We form an adjective. Pause, read that on your own. Only one L at the end. Oh, you've got to try and remind me of that rule. It's really important. So let's look back. Which mode are we applying here? That's right. We are just adding the suffix -ful with one L. Let's look at pattern spelling number two. Three root words worth, end, price. But this time we're adding the suffix -less. Endless, priceless, worthless. Can you match them to the correct root word? Point with your finger now. Oh, I see some magic fingers. Okay. Worth becomes worthless, without worth. Remember the suffix -less means without, so without worth. It means it isn't worth anything. End becomes endless. It goes on and on and on. There is no end in sight without an end. and price becomes priceless. There is no price, it is without any price. I can't tell you how much it costs. Can you add the suffix less to these three root words? Remember you're forming adjectives. The first one is wire, home, count. You are adding the suffix -less. Can you write these down or say them out loud? Pause the video now. Wire becomes wireless, without wires. Home becomes homeless, means that you are without a home And count becomes countless. Kind of funny don't you think? I kind of remember,so countless it means that you can't count them. So without counting so many times, I just countless times I told him to sit on his chair or countless times I try to tie my shoelaces but I still couldn't do it. It just means you cannot count the number of times. What's the rule when we add -less? The suffix -less That's right well done, When we add -less suffix to the root word we form an adjective, brilliant. Backfire mind map. You can see this time, we're just adding the suffix again. It's really easy. Spelling pattern number three. Mercy, beauty, two more root words. We're adding the suffix -ful. What happens to the adjectives here? Have you spotted something that's changed? Oh, I can hear you yelling at me. Ms. Morgan. We have changed the -y to an i. And we've added the suffix -F U L, -ful you've. Yes, yes, that's right. We've seen this before. With lots of other words family to families, et cetera, et cetera. So the word mercy becomes merciful. So you are full of mercy and the word beauty becomes beautiful. Full of beauty. Oh, you also spotted only one L at the end. Well done. You are going to be great spellers today. What is the rule if a word ends in a -y? Mmmmm You change -y to an -I and you add -F U L. Read that on your own. Well done. So the rule here, is not adding just the suffix, but we are changing -y to and -I, then we add the suffix. Well done. What I would say is there are not very many words when we were using the suffix -F U L and less.

Ful and -less where the word end in a Y, there just aren't that many words. Now has anyone spotted this yet? Are there any words that you can add? The suffix is -ful and -less too, and they both make sense. Let's see what I mean Like the word pain, we can add -ful, you have painful. You can add less. To make painless. Painful That's a word. Yes it was painful when I fell over, full of pain. Painless. It was a painless operation. I didn't feel anything, without pain. Remember -less means without. But there is quit other examples. So look Look the word hope becomes, say it with me hope plus -ful becomes hopeful. He was hopeful for the future. Hope plus -less becomes hopeless. He was hopeless with tying his shoelaces. Fear we add -ful, fear plus full becomes fearful, full of fear. He was fearful of snakes. Fear plus less becomes fearless. She was a fearless warrior. So here, we've got more examples where we can add full and less to the root word and they make sense. Let's see if it works with another example Here's the word forget lets add -ful, forget plus -ful forgetful. Ms. Morgan was very forgetful. Forget plus less. Hm forgetles. Forgetles That doesn't really sound like it makes sense. Does it? And it doesn't make sense. And this is one of the strange things that as you get older and more, you read, the more you talk to people, the more you listen to audio stories or your parents might read to you, you'll start to be able to recognise which words do make sense. And which don't forget less is not the word. If anything, it sounds really ridiculous. Let's see if it works with any more examples. Worth let's try adding the suffix -less. Worthless, without worth. So it doesn't mean, it doesn't have any value. So this, my glasses are worthless. They don't have any sort of value. Worth plus full, worthful, full of worth. It seems like it should make sense, But it doesn't sound right. Worthful. That's not correct. Let's try one more. Fruit, fruitful, fruitless. Sounds a bit strange to me. Is it talking about having lots of fruit? No fruitful means when you've had a productive day. So maybe you had a productive day at school a fruitful day at school, and you did a lots of learning and you had lots of fun. The opposite of fruitful is fruitless. It was a fruitless task. It wasn't very productive at all. You didn't do anything at school. Didn't get any of your tasks done. So even though sometimes sounds a little bit funny sometimes these words can make sense. What spending rules have we learned today? We've learned that you can't just add the suffix full unless remember -ful with one L, and full means full off and less means without. We've also found that if you have a word, a root word, that ends in a Y for example, beauty or mercy, when you change a -y to an -I, and you add fill, we also found out that there are some words you can add -ful and -less to for example, painful, painless, hopeful, hopeless. And sometimes that can just be a case of saying them out loud and seeing if you think they make sense and you might make mistakes. And that's absolutely fine. Let's see if we can apply these rules now. Here's the root word, sleep. Pause. Write down. See if you can add either the suffixes, and if you think they are correct. How did you get on? Sleepless I added the suffix -less, sleepful Hmm. See, -ful doesn't really sound right and it's not right so here we are just adding the suffix -less. Sleepless. It was a sleepless night. It was a night without sleep. Here's a root word, taste. Can you see if you can add -ful and less. Write them down. Pause the video. Tasteful tasteless. Both of those are correct. Tasteful. Tasteful means you have got lots of taste or something has lots of tastes. Tasteless means without taste. You can use both suffixes with the root word. Now it's time to make, to set your 10 spelling words. Make sure you got the clean piece of paper. Write the numbers one to ten with each number on a new line. Pause the video now to do this. I'm going through the spellings one by one. I'll say the spelling twice. And then I'll put the spelling in a sentence, so you can understand it. Let's get started. You'll notice I've colour coded the word as per usual. There's only one in the green one. And that was because it was one of the words that ended in a y. And you can see I've replaced the y with and I. The spelling word is beautiful. Beautiful. It was a beautiful day. Number two, forgetful forgetful. Forgetful She was so forgetful. Number three, thoughtful, thoughtful. He looks at me with a thoughtful expression. Number four, disgraceful, disgraceful. Your behaviour is disgraceful. Number five, successful, successful. We were successful. We managed to get into the park. All those words had the suffix full at the end. Remember just one L. Number six, useless, useless. He was useless at tying his shoelaces. Number seven, fearless, fearless. She was a fearless explorer. Number eight, defenceless, defenceless. The antilope was defenceless against the lion. Be careful in defenceless. It's got that silent C making that S sound. Just be careful there. Number nine, powerless, powerless. The children were powerless to do anything. Number 10, careless, careless He was careless with his money. Make sure you've written these spellings down carefully. Well done. You finished your lesson for today. You've worked really hard. Make sure you practise your spelling little and often every day, if possible. And remember my clue for writing words down. And you can just stick them on things around the house.
