﻿Hello, everybody, Miss Hughes here. What's your name? Can you guess where I am today? Maybe the big green leaves and the water will give you a clue. I am in the rainforest. It's very hot here. And it looks like it's going to rain. I better put my coat on. Come and join me on our adventure into the rainforest where we will learn to identify the different parts of a rainforest. There are going to be three lessons on rainforest. The first with me, the second with Miss Sidenius. And the third with Mrs. Garrard. In this lesson, we will listen to a story. Learn what a rainforest is. Learn about a rainforest habitat. And then you're going to create a rainforest in a jar. You're going to need an empty jar for this. Ask your grownup to help you find one. And then you're going to need some things from outside, like soil, leaves, stones, and some grass and moss. Make sure to check with your grownup before touching any of these things, so that you know they're safe. Pause the video here, get what you need and restart when you're ready. So we're going to begin our lesson by listening to a story. And this story takes place in a jungle, which is very similar to a rainforest. It has lots of the same plants and lots of the same animals. It's called "Little Monkey," and it's by Marta Altes, and published by MacMillan. As we listen to the story, I want you to think what signs of a rainforest or a jungle do you see in the story? "Monkey loved living in the jungle. "There was so many things to do and so many things to see, "but every now and then things went a bit wrong. "Monkey had a little problem, "and the problem was being little. "Some days everything was out of reach. "Other days it was out of sight. "Things were always too deep, too dangerous, "and too difficult for someone so little. "Monkey was fed up with always missing out. "So one day she made a decision, "a very brave and very big decision. "'I will climb to the top of the tallest tree. "'The jungle is not too big for me, you'll see.' "It wasn't an easy journey, not easy at all. "The river was deep and dangerous. "The path was often difficult, but Monkey would not give up. "And step by step, she found her way. "Everywhere Monkey looked, she noticed little things, "and the little things did amazing things. "'Now it's my turn,' she said. "So Monkey began to count. "'One, two, three. "'Who's too little now? "'Not me.' "Soon, Monkey had reached the very bottom "of the tallest tree in the jungle. "'This will be fun,' she said. "And she began to climb. "Higher, up she went, climbing higher and higher, "right to the very top. "The world below looked so little and so beautiful. "Finally, Monkey could see everything, "including the rest of her troop. "'They look very excited to see me. "'It must be time to go,' thought Monkey. "And he swung down from the tallest tree, "feeling very pleased and very proud. "Monkey did love living in the jungle, now more than ever. "'I may be small, but I'm very brave,' she said. "'And very lucky,' said the rest of the troop. "Little Monkey knew they were right, "because the smaller you are, "the larger your adventures can be. "But best of all, the bigger the hugs feel." The end, your turn. I love that story because Little Monkey shows us that no matter how small you are, you can always have a big adventure. What signs of the rainforest did you spot in the story? Tell your screen. Maybe you notice some of the beautiful plants in the story. Maybe you saw the tiger chasing Little Monkey. I'm glad Little Monkey escaped. Or maybe you noticed the beautiful, colourful birds swinging in the trees. Rainforests are exciting places with loads of different plants and animals. And rainforests is an area that is covered with trees and has a heavy rainfall. It's an area that is? Covered with trees and has a heavy rainfall. The habitat we're looking at today is called a? Rainforest, and we need rainforests to survive. Look at the picture and tell your screen what you can see in the rainforest. I can see. Well done, we can see loads of different plants and trees. And those plants and trees release oxygen, which helps us to breathe and stay alive. So it's really important we look after our rainforests, so we have enough trees to be able to survive. There are so many different animals that live in the rainforest. There are thousands of species. Using the pictures to help you, tell you screen some of the animals that live in the rainforest. Well done, you've named loads. Let's call out the ones on the screen. Tigers, gorillas, toucans. Orangutans, parrots, and snakes. All live in the rainforest with many more animals. Rainforests are a really great habitat for animals. That means they're a good home. A habitat is a home for animals. And different animals need different habitats. That's because different habitats have different climates. Your turn, climates. Climates are the weather patterns. Different habitats have different areas of shelter, places to keep the animals safe. Different habitats have different? Shelter, and different habitats have different foods for the animals to eat. They have different? Foods, and animals must find a habitat with a climate, shelter, and food that works for them, so that they have the best chance of surviving. Of surviving. In the rainforest, the climate is warm and wet. It is? Warm and wet. A warm and wet climate is called humid. My turn, humid, your turn, humid. The climate in the rainforest is? Humid. So lots of animals like the humid climate. But within the rainforest, different animals like different parts of the rainforest. That's because different parts of the rainforest have different levels of sunlight and rainfall. Say it with me, they have different levels of sunlight and rainfall. And there are four main areas where animals will live. There is the top layer, called the emergent layer. Show me top layer, the emergent layer. Then there is the canopy. Show me canopy. This is where most of the tops of the trees are. So there is lots of shelter and food for the animals. Canopy, great. Some animals prefer to live just under the tops of the trees, called the understory. Your turn, understory. And a few animals, not many, like to live on the forest floor, the bottom of the rainforest. Show me forest floor. So let's look at each layer of the rainforest a little bit more. Some animals like to live on the emergent layer. My turn, emergent layer. This is where the tallest trees are, and the most sunlight. It's where the? Tallest trees, and the? Most sunlight is. Animals like monkeys, bats, and butterflies like to live here, where they get the most sunlight. Here is a butterfly that lives in the emergent layer. Tell your screen why the butterfly likes living here. The butterfly likes living in the emergent layer because it has the most? Sunlight, well done. Then we have the canopy. The canopy is where most of the animals in the rainforest live. It's where most of the tops of the trees form a big shelter. There is lots of shelter. And it is known as the forest roof. The canopy has loads of shelter and loads of food for the animals. So lots of animals like living there, including this toucan. Tell your screen why the toucan, along with most animals, likes living on the canopy. Toucans and lots of animals like living in the canopy because it has the most shelter and foods. Well done. Next, we have the understory. Your turn, understory, which is just beneath the forest roof. And the understory doesn't get much sunlight because the canopy blocks the sun. It doesn't get? Much sunlight. So the animals that like living here like living in quite dark places. Animals like bats and insects. Lots of insects don't need much sunshine. Look at this creature. It is an insect. Why does it like living in the understory of the rainforest? Tell your screen. Well done, insects and bats like living in the understory because they don't need much sunlight. And finally, we have the forest floor. We have the? Forest floor. The very bottom of the rainforest, and it is very dark on the forest floor. So not many animals and plants can survive. It is very? Dark, one type of animal that does like living there is an anteater because anteaters don't need much sunlight. Some animals live on the forest floor. Tell your screen why there aren't many animals on the forest floor. Well done, it is very dark. So there is not much food or sunshine. Wow, we've learned about the four layers of the rainforest. We've learned about the top layer, the emergent layer. We've learned about the canopy, the tops of the trees, or the forest roof. We've learned about the understory, just below the tops of the trees. And we've learned about the forest floor. If you'd like to pause the video here and practise saying all of the names of the different areas of the rainforest. Now that we know what a rainforest is, we're going to create our own rainforest in a jar. But what will we need? Look at the picture and tell your screen what our rain forest is going to need. That's right, it's going to need a forest floor. Maybe made of some soil or some stones. And it's going to need lots of plants and trees, which release oxygen into the air. So here are the list of things you need. If you forgot to get something earlier, or you've thought of something else, pause the video here and make sure you've got everything in front of you. Great, so let's begin to create our rainforest. And the first thing you need to do is put your jar in front of you. Pause the video here to get your jar in front of you and take the top off, restart when you're ready. Great, now you need to check you've got all of your things, so let's go through them. We need some soil, moss, stones, and leaves, and a bit of grass as well. Pause the video here to check you've got all of those things. Great, let's begin with step one, which is to fill the bottom of our jar with stones to make the forest floor. Maybe you can count them as you put them into your jar. Step one, fill the jar with stones and press play when you're ready. Now, we need to make the second part of our forest floor, which is going to be made of soil where the anteaters like to roam around. So number two, put soil into your jar. Might want to shake the soil and the stones so that it mixes together. Pause the video here to complete step number two, put soil in the jar. Your forest floor is looking great. Let's start to add some plants to our rainforest. And the first thing we're going to put in is moss, my turn, moss. Your turn. Moss is a small, soft, green plant that doesn't have flowers. So carefully put your moss in on top of the soil. Number three, put moss into your rainforest jar. Pause the video here to complete your task. Restart when you're ready. We're halfway through and our next step, step number four, is to put grass in. The grass is going to represent the plants and the trees in the rainforest. I wonder if you're going to choose tall strands of grass or short strands of grass. Make sure they fit all the way in. Pause the video here to complete step number four, put grass in. Well done. Step number five is to add some leaves. It's important that the animals in the rainforest have lots of different plants available to them because different animals like to eat and live on different plants. So put them carefully around the edge and see if you can create a canopy. Pause the video to complete step number five, put grass in. Now we come to our most important and final step, which is to close the jar. Make sure you twist the top on tightly so that the rainforest doesn't escape. And now we have our finished rainforest.
