﻿Hello everybody, Miss Hughes here. What's your name? Great to meet you all. I can't stay too long because I need to go to school soon. I'm wondering how to get there. Should I take the train or cycle or walk? Though it would be a really long walk. Maybe you can help me decide, because today, we are learning about transport, and we're going to explain the features of different modes of transport. There will be three lessons on transport. One with me, number two with Miss Sidenius, and number three with Mrs. Garrard. In this lesson, we will listen to a story, learn about transport and design our own. You're going to need your listening ears to take in all the information, your brain, which is already in your head to help you learn, and some paper and colours. And if you need to get those, pause the video here and press play when you're ready. Fantastic. We have everything we need to begin. And in this lesson, I'm going to tell you a different type of book to the one that we normally read. We're going to read a non-fiction book. My turn, non-fiction, your turn? And a non-fiction is a book about facts. Everything written in the book is true, it is not made up. And our non-fiction book is about transport. My turn, transport. Your turn, transport. Our different vehicles that get us from one place to another. And there are so many types of transport. You can see a picture of some on this screen. Pause the video here and call out all of the types of transport you can think of. Wow, you named so many like boats and planes and cars and bicycles and lots of others. Let's learn about a few more. Non-fiction texts give us lots of facts, lots of information about transport in this case. And that means we don't need to read all of the words on the page. We choose to read the parts that we're interested in. So I'm just going to give you the overview, the main parts of the text. But if you're interested in any of the types of transport, you can pause the video and ask your grownup to help you read the information on the page. Let's begin. This is a book called "Wow! Vehicles", a book of extraordinary facts. First published in 2019 by Kingfisher, an imprint of Macmillan's Children's Books. On the move, a vehicle moves people or things from place to place. It might have wheels, point at the wheels, maybe on the car or the bicycle, but not always. Hop on, hop off. Cities are teaming with all kinds of vehicles, taking people wherever they need to go. Here are some vehicles you might take when you're out in your communities. Tell your screen what vehicles you take when you're out in your communities? Some of you take a bus or a train or a taxi, and some of you take different things. Fast as a bullet. Trains are a great way to travel. They're fast, they're long, and some of them don't run along train tracks Off to work. Lots of people do very important jobs working inside a vehicle. Paramedics work in an ambulance and police officers work in a police car. Sometimes builders work in a digger. What vehicles can you think of that people work in? Tell your screen. Well done. To the rescue! A fire engine hurries to the scene of a fire, carrying firefighters and tools to put out fires and rescue people. On the farm. There are more than seven billion people on planet earth and everyone needs food to eat. Farmers do a very important job growing the food you eat and this vehicle helps them. Do you know what it's called? It's a tractor. Well done. Time for fun. Vehicles don't just do jobs for us. We use them for other important things, such as having fun. Can you think of any vehicles that help you to have fun? Tell the screen. You may have thought of an ice cream van or a roller coaster at a theme park. Wow, I didn't know a roller coaster was a vehicle. This is such a great book of facts. Vrrrooooom! People love cars that travel fast. The faster, the better like race cars. Ship ahoy. When people cross lakes, rivers, and seas, wheels are of no use. They need a boat. Point to some of the boats in the picture. Going down. Sailors and scientist use special vehicles to travel underwater all the way to the bottom. Nope. Do you know what an underwater vehicle like this one is called? It's called a submarine. Well done, some of you knew that. Fly like a bird. We may not have wings, but that hasn't stopped people from building amazing vehicles to fly in the sky above us. Name some vehicles that fly, tell your screen. Some of you thought of aeroplane and jets and hot air balloons and helicopters. There are so many. Out of this world. We can now travel beyond the clouds, all the way to outer space in a rocket, wow! Globe trotting. All over the world, people use weird and wonderful vehicles to move around. Into the future. What kind of vehicles do you think you'll be using in the future, a time that hasn't happened yet? Maybe a flying car? What vehicle would you like to see in the future? Tell your screen. I would like to see... You've got some great ideas. Keep them in your head. You're going to need those ideas later. Wacky races. Not all vehicles are built to be practical. Some people have crazy ideas like using a unicycle. And that's the end of our book of "Fact on Transport". We learned about so many different types of transport. Now we learn a little bit more about the features of that transport. Remember transport is a vehicle that takes you from one place to another. It takes you from one place to another. What transport do you use most? Maybe you have a car. If you have a bicycle, tell your screen, I use.... Wow, you take lots of different types of transport. Now, there are some more pictures of transport on the screen. Here is your chance to name some of the ones you haven't thought of. There are bicycles, cars, boats, trains, aeroplanes , and vans. With many more. Vehicles have different things that help them to work. Some vehicles have wheels. Point to a vehicle that has wheels. You might have pointed to the bicycle or the car, but did you notice the wheels on the train or the plane? Wheels go round and help vehicles to move. Some vehicles have an engine, a machine that helps them to work. Which vehicles do you think have engines, on the screen? Point to them or call them out? Cars, trains and planes have engines. But did you know that some boats have engines too? This bicycle does not have an engine, we have to pedal to make it move. And some transport has wings and wings help transport to fly. Which transport can you see that has wings? Only one in this picture, the aeroplane, well done. Let's think first about some of the vehicles we see on the road. These are probably the vehicles you see. Most often, road vehicles have wheels. You can see them on the car, the van and the bike. Some vehicles on the road have engines, machines that help them move, and some do not have engines. Which vehicle in the picture does not have an engine. Tell your screen. That's fine, the bicycle does not have an engine. These are road vehicles. Some transport travels on tracks. Here's a picture of the tracks, can you point to it? And tracks help vehicles to stay in a certain direction? Which vehicle can you think of that travels on tracks? Lots of you thought of trains. Some trains do as well. Trains have wheels, but these wheels don't work on the road. They must stay on the tracks. And some trains have engines, machines that help them to move. Some transport stays on tracks. Some transport flies up into the sky and floats. Which transports can you think of that travel in the air? Tell your screen. That's right, aeroplanes travel in the air. They have a special engine and they have wheels to help them take off. And they have wings to help them fly. To travel in the air is really difficult. So aeroplanes are very cleverly designed and have lots of things to help them. Hot air balloons also travel in the air, but they float rather than fly with the engine. Some vehicles travel in the air, and some transport travels on the water. You might think of ships or boats. Some have engines like this big ship, which needs an engine to help it move. And some have sails and no engine. Those boats need somebody to help them steer, or they will travel in the direction that the wind takes them in. Some transport travels on water. Wow, we've learned about so many types of transport and I think I've got a much better idea about what transport I'd want to use to get to places. Tophi, my favourite Teddy needs to go in some journey. Let's help him decide what transport to use. The first place Tophi wants to go is to school. He's in his home at the moment, which is not very far away from the school. How should Tophi travel? Should he take a bicycle, a boat or a car? Tell your screen, Tophi should take? Great. Lots of you suggested Tophi took a bicycle. That would be a great way of getting in his exercise because bicycles have no engine. Some of you suggested that Tophi took a car. That would be okay too, especially if it was raining. But cars give off a lot of things that are not very good for the environment. So if you can walk or take a bicycle for a short journey, that's a better option. Next, Tophi wants to go to Wales. Tophi is in London at the moment. London is here, can you point to it? And Tophi wants to go to Wales, which is where his family are from. That takes a really long time to get to. Do you think Tophi should travel in an aeroplane, a boat or a car? Tell your screen. Correct. Tophi should travel in a car because it's far away, but it's not crossing any water, so he doesn't need to get in a ship or go on an aeroplane. Now Tophi is ready for a holiday, and Tophi wants to go from London in the UK to visit Italy, which is down here. I can see that there's water in the middle. How should Tophi travel? Should he go on an aeroplane, a bicycle or a car? Tell your screen, Tophi should take... Great. Tophi's best option would be to take an aeroplane, because it's really far away. Thank you so much for helping Tophi. He has a much better idea of how to travel. Now, we've learned lots about transport, and earlier, we thought about what transport might look like in the future. And here, I want you to design your own type of transport for the future. I want you to think about where you need to take it, how it will move and what it will look like by designing it. Here's my transport. It's called a carboplane, and I thought it would be really cool to mix some features of a car, boat and plane, so that my vehicle could travel on the roads, in the sky and in the water.
