﻿Hello, and welcome to lesson six on our unit, where we are focusing on the picture book, "The Day The Crayons Quit", and we are going to be doing some persuasive writing. My name is Ms.Bourke and I am a teacher with the Oak Academy. I'm really excited about our lesson today because in our lesson today, we are going to use our imagination to create our own character that might be feeling upset with us that might want to quit just like Duncan's crayons. Okay, so let's go, let's go through our agenda for today. First, we will do our warmup, then we will look at why the crayons quit. After that, we will come up with some ideas for our character, and finally we will complete our task. In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil and your brain for all that thinking. If you don't have an exercise book, paper, or a pencil, pause the video and go and get them now. Good job. It's time for our warm up. We are going to be looking at commands in our warm up today. So let's just remember what a command is. A command tells the reader what the writer wants or gives an instruction to the reader. So for example, the grey crayon might say, stop using me to colour in huge grey elephants! Commands, use imperative or bossy verbs such as my turn. Stop, hold, give. Here, I have some questions. I would like you to change these questions into commands. I'm going to read the question three for you. Please can you give me that book? Can you hold this for me please? Can you clean your room please? Can you put your book down please? These all sound very polite. These don't sound that bossy because these are questions. I would like you to turn these questions into commands. Pause the video and do that now. Good job. Let's have a look and go through it together. Please can you give me that book? Becomes, give me that book! starting with the verb, give. Can you hold this for me please? Becomes, hold this for me! Starting with the verb, hold. Can you clean your room please? Becomes, clean your room! And finally, can you put your book down please? Becomes, puts your book down! They all start with verbs and you might notice that the end I have put an exclamation mark. Often our commands will have that punctuation and exclamation Mark at the end of them. Let's investigate now. Why did the crayons quit? Why did the crayons from our book "The Day The Crayons Quit"? Why? Why did they quit? Let's have a look. Here we have the letter from the red crayon. It says, "Hey Duncan, it's me, red crayon. "We need to talk. "You make me work harder than any "of your other crayons. "All year long I wear myself out colouring, "fire engines, apples, strawberries, "and everything else that's red. "I even work on the holidays. "I have to colour all the santas at Christmas "and all the hearts on Valentine's day. "I need a rest. "Your overworked friend, red crayon." Why did the red crayon quit? I'd like you to think about this, and then you can choose to say your answer out loud, or write your answer down. The red crayon quit because... Pause the video and say your answer loud or write it down. Okay. Let's have a look. Why did you think the red crayon quit? One of the reasons that the red crayon quit is because they were exhausted, because they never get a break. And also because they were overworked because they had to work on the holiday. So I've got a speech bubble here, and this is what the crayon is saying. "I'm exhausted because I never get a break. "I'm overworked because you make me colour even on holidays." So this crayon had to leave, had to quit because it was too tired and too overworked to keep going. I wonder what you wrote as your reason. Okay, now let's have a look at the beige crayon. Everyone's down like the beige crayon again. This crayon is showing us with their body how they are feeling. I think they might be feeling a bit unhappy, a bit left out, "dear Duncan. "I'm tired of being called light Brown "or dark tan because I am neither. "I am beige and I am proud. "I'm also tired of being second place "to Mr. Brown crayon. "It's not fair that Brown gets all the bears, "ponies and puppies, "while the only things I get are Turkey dinners, "if I'm lucky and wait. "And let's be honest. "When was the last time you saw a kid excited "about colouring wheat? "Your beige friend, beige crayon." Okay, so why did the beige crayon quit? Thinking about that letter and again, you can say your answer aloud, the beige crayon quit because, or you can write your idea down. Pause the video and do that now. Okay, excellent work. I bet you came up with a really good reason, using the evidence from the book. Beige crayon is saying this. "I feel deflated because you never choose me "to colour in with." So one reason is because he does this crayon doesn't get chosen very often, and they're also saying, "I feel unloved because you don't appreciate me "all I get to colour is wheat and turkeys." I say the second reason is because when they do get chosen to colour, they don't get to colour in very interesting things. I wonder if your reasons or your ideas were similar to mine. Okay, finally we've got our peach crayon. "Hey, Duncan. "It's me, peach crayon. "Why did you peel off my wrapping paper? "Now am naked and too embarrassed to leave the crayon box. "I don't even have any underwear. "How would you like to go to school naked? "I need some clothes. "Help your naked friend, Peach crayon." Okay. Why did the peach crayon quit? Why is the peach crayon unhappy with Duncan again? You can say your answer aloud, or you can write it down. The peach crayon quit because, or write your answer down. Pause the video now and say aloud or write down why the peach crayon quit. Okay, let's have a look at my ideas. Here we have the peach crayon saying, "I feel embarrassed because you peeled my wrapper off." So one reason that they quit is because they were embarrassed and peach crayon is also saying, "you haven't treated me properly "and now I'm stuck in the box." So another reason is that peach crayon feels like they've been mistreated your turn. Duncan hasn't treated them with respect or treated them well because Duncan peeled the wrapping off the paper, wrapping off. I wonder what ideas you came up with. Now, we are going to come up with some ideas for our own character. We are going to be writing a letter from a character point of view that we have come up with. So today we are going to devise or come up with or create that character. Can you think of any objects you own that might want quit? Have a think. Is there anything you own that you think might be tired or mistreated or feeling left out? Do you own an object that might want to quit because it needs a rest? Do you have an object in your house that you own, that you use all the time that might be feeling exhausted Like the red crayon? Have a think, pause the video and write your answer down. Write your idea down. Okay, I bet you came up with a really excellent idea. I think that in my house, my trainers are exhausted. That's an object that I own that might want to quit because they are overworked. And I've drawn a speech bubble. My trainers are saying, "you wear me every day "and walk for miles and miles." So they're feeling exhausted because they have to be walked in so much. "I need a break. "Don't you have any other shoes you can wear"? That's why my trainers are exhausted and want to quit. I wonder what object you chose that might be feeling exhausted. Okay, do you have any objects that are feeling like the beige crayon? Any objects that you think might be feeling unloved? Maybe something that you used to use a lot, but you don't really use anymore? Pause the video, have a think and write your idea down. Okay, wow I bet you came up with something really creative. I had to think about this too. And I think there's definitely an item. An object that I own that is feeling a bit unloved. That object is my board game. I used to play board games a lot, but I haven't played them much recently. Here is the speech bubble. My board game me saying, "you never play with me anymore." That's why they are feeling unloved. "I'm stuck in a dusty box, "on a shelf all year long. "You only play with me when it's raining." So my board game would like to be played with a bit more and played with at other times, not just when it's raining. I wonder why the object that you chose feels unloved. Okay. Finally, do you have an object that feels like the peach crayon, that might be feeling embarrassed or mistreated something that maybe you've been fiddling with? Maybe it's gotten a bit broken. Maybe you just don't treat as well as you should. pause the video, have a think and write your idea down. Okay, really good job. Unfortunately, I do have an object that I think might want to quit because it feels mistreated. And that is my favourite book. I take my favourite book with me everywhere. Just in case I'd like to read it. It's always with me in a bag, but it doesn't feel loved. It feels mistreated. The book is saying, "you stuff me into bags "and leave me all over the house. "So my pages are crumpled." So this book is saying, you just throw me around and it's breaking me. It's making my pages crumpled. The book doesn't like that. "I feel mistreated because you fold down my pages "and fall asleep with me." That's true. Instead of using a bookmark, sometimes I do fold the little corner on my, on the pages so I know where I'm up to. And if I'm reading in bed, sometimes I do fall asleep and I don't think the book likes that. Probably gets stuck under my head and doesn't like it very much. The book, my favourite book is feeling mistreated. I wonder why the object you chose, is feeling mistreated. Now it's time for our task. You are going to come up with your own character that feels unhappy with you for a reason like they are overworked, they are mistreated or they are unloved. I have chosen my character to be my board game today. It says, Ms Bourke's character. And I've drawn a picture of my board game. You can see it on the screen there. Then I've drawn my board game with some tears coming out of its eyes because it's feeling very, very unloved and very, very sad. And I've joined a speech bubble and the speech bubble is explaining, showing what the board game is saying and explaining how the board game feels. It says, "I feel unloved because you never play "with me anymore." Now, remember our letters are going to be from our character's point of view so that means we need to be using the first person. So words like I, my, me, our and we. And then I've also written down some feelings. So I think my board game is feeling unloved. Your turn. I think it's feeling upset. Your turn. I also think my board game might be feeling a bit lonely. Your turn. Yeah, maybe a bit lonely because it's on a shelf all by itself, and because we don't, I don't play with it very often anymore. Okay, now it's your turn. You are going to choose an object you own, and think about why it might want to quit. You might want to choose one of the objects that you wrote down earlier in the lesson, or you might want to choose a different object. If you'd like, you could magpie one of my ideas so you could choose trainers who are feeling exhausted, a board game who is feeling unloved, or a book who is feeling mistreated if you'd like to. This is what you need to do today. First, you need to draw a picture of your character. Then you need to draw a speech bubble and write in the speech bubble, how your character is feeling and why using the joining conjunction, because, and then finally you need to write three feeling words, to show how your character is feeling. I would like you to pause the video now and come up with the idea for your character following steps one, two and three off you go. Excellent work. I bet your pictures are great. I bet you came up with some amazing feeling words and I'm sure you came up with a really great reason explaining why your character is feeling that way. Writing a sentence in one of those speech bubbles. Well done!
