The Fate of Fausto - Narrative Writing

﻿Hello everyone, my name is Ms. Butt. And today I'm going to be teaching you three new words for you to use in your unit on "The Fate of Fausto." I've read the book, "The Fate to Fausto," and I am pretty sure you'll agree with me that Fausto is not a particularly kind character. One thing he is though, is very confident. So today we're going to be learning three ways to describe confidence. I hope you enjoy the lesson. So here's what we're going to do today. First, I'm going to introduce the new vocabulary one word at a time. After each word there's going to be an illustration that helps us to understand what that word means. Then we're going to look up word pairs and synonyms for each word. And finally, we're going to try to apply these words in sentences that hopefully will be useful in your narrative writing. So for today's lesson, you're going to need something to write on and something to write with. Perhaps you could pause the video to go and make sure you've got those things now, and to clear away anything that could distract you so you're nice and focused and ready to learn. So let's think a little bit about this word confidence. Do you think it is important to be confident? Why or why not? Can you pause the video and think a little bit about what confidence is and if you think it's a good thing to be confident or a bad thing. Great, well done. I think that it's very important to be confident because we have to believe in ourselves, don't we? But sometimes people can be overly confident and that's when it slightly tips into arrogance. And perhaps that is what happens with Fausto. Let's have a look at some key vocabulary we're going to be using today. I'm going to say each word and then I'd like you to repeat it back to me. Synonym, word pair, adjective, noun. Excellent. So a synonym is a word that means exactly or nearly the same as another word. Like the words merry and happy are very similar. Word pairs are often words that often appear together. So if you had the adjective bright, it might be paired up with the sun, a bright sun, or a moon, a bright moon, or a light, a bright light. An adjective is a describing word. And often they describe nouns, which are a person, a place or a thing. So today, because we're going to be learning some words that mean the similar thing to confidence to describe Fausto, what type of words do you think we're going to be learning, adjectives or nouns? That's right, adjectives, because we're going to be learning some words to describe Fulstow. Let's take a look at our first confident word. Before I show you what the word is, I'm going to first of all show you an image. I'd like you to look closely at what is happening in this picture. What story do you think this picture is telling? How do you think these two characters are feeling? How would you describe these characters? Can you pause the video and either think about that or describe what you see out loud. Well done. It looks to me like there's one character who is desperately trying to get the other character to sign something. I can see it says a contract. That's what you might sign if you start a new job. And he's holding a pad in his hand and he's looking very encouraging. But the other character, the giraffe, is trying to shove him out, trying to close the door. He doesn't seem to be very- He doesn't seem to want to sign this contract. This word is assertive, assertive. Assertive is an adjective and it means forceful or self-confident like someone who always manages to get their way. Perhaps you could just stop and think, do you know of anyone who is quite assertive? Somebody who always manages to get their own way, perhaps at play time or something like that, they might always persuade you to play the game that they want to play. Have a little think. So let's read some words. Some of these words are synonyms. That means they mean more or less the same thing as assertive. And some of them are those word pairs. Forceful, salesperson, behaviour, stance, self-confident, personality, speaker, move, decisive, manner and voice. Here's the word in a sentence. The assertive man demanded that the tree should bow before him. Perhaps you might recognise who that man is. Could you pause the video and see if you can tell me which three of these words are synonyms for assertive? That means they mean the same thing as assertive. Off you go. So the synonyms are forceful, self-confident and decisive. If you're decisive, it means you can make decisions very quickly and easily. Which means the rest of these words are word pairs, which I'm going to read to you now. So you might have an assertive sales person. Perhaps they're trying to sell you something in a shop. If they were very assertive, they would probably persuade you to buy it. Assertive behaviour, an assertive stance. A stance is the way someone stands or what their posture is. Show me what an assertive stance would look like. Well, very good. The opposite to an assertive stance would be someone who was maybe hunching their shoulders or looking at the floor, or maybe fidgeting a little bit. Somebody who is assertive would be standing strong with maybe their shoulders back. An assertive personality. An assertive speaker. Somebody who's very confident speaking in front of lots of people. An assertive move or maybe if you are playing a game of chess or playing a sports game with someone, you might do an assertive move. We'll make an assertive move. An assertive manner. And a manner is just the way in which something's done. And an assertive voice. I'd like you now to pause the video and read these words out loud, just like I did. Because when we learn new vocabulary, we don't learn it just from reading it. We have to actually say the words aloud. So assertive salesperson, assertive behaviour and so on. Can you pause the video and do that for me now? Excellent, well done. So before we move on, very quickly tell me what does assertive mean? Great, it means forceful or self-confident. I wonder if any of you are assertive people because assertive, I think can be quite a positive thing. It's not necessarily a negative word. Whoa, what is happening in this picture? Here's the illustration for our second word of today? What can you see? What is these two characters doing? How would you describe these two characters? Can you pause the video and have a little think about that now we'll say aloud what you see. I can see that one of these characters is dressed all in black. Maybe because they don't want to be recognised and they are trying to steal something. But can you believe it? They're not trying to steal from any old person. They're actually trying to steal from a policeman who's busy munching on his donut. So he hasn't even noticed. How shocking that somebody, a thief, would not only steal anything because stealing is wrong all the time. But that actually also is stealing from a policeman. Oh my goodness. Let's see what this word is. Brazen, brazen. This is an adjective and it means bold and shameless. Like stealing a policeman's wallet in plain sight. 'Cause that's the other thing it's not even dark. It's bright daylight anyone could catch them. The policeman might feel the wallet coming out of his pocket and turn around and arrest them. But they still done it. It's a very bold move. So just as before, I'm going to read you some words and I want you to see if you can identify the synonyms. Synonyms are words that mean the same thing as brazen. Bold, thief, defiance, attitude, lie, arrogance, attack, shameless, attempt, blatant. Here's the word in the sentence. That brazen man marched up to the mountain that loomed over him. So pause the video and see if you can tell me which three of these words are synonyms. Let's see how you got on. The synonyms are bold, shameless and blatant. If you do something blatantly, you do it very obviously. The rest of these words therefore, are word pairs, which I'll read to you now. A brazen thief, like we can see in this picture. Brazen defiance, if you are defiant, it means you're very disobedient. But again, if it's in quite a bold way, standing up to someone. A brazen attitude, a brazen lie. For example, if you call two little toddler and they had chocolate all around their mouth and there was a cake in front of them that had little hand prints out of it and they said, I didn't eat any of the chocolate cake. You might say that's a brazen lie because it's quite obvious that they're lying. A brazen arrogance or brazen arrogance. A brazen attack, and finally a brazen attempt. So just as before, I'd like you now to read this word, brazen, with all of its word pairs out loud so that this word hopefully will stick in your memories. Off you go. Excellent. So before we move on to our final word, very quickly tell me, what does this word brazen mean? Well done, it means bold and shameless. Let's look at our final illustration. Oh my word, what's happening in this picture? And how would you describe this character? Pause the video and have a think about that now? Well, I can see here that there's a character who has not only got a selfie stick, where you hold some thing so your phone camera can take a photo of you. They've got, it looks about over 10 selfie sticks taking photos of every single angle of them. And it looks like they're really posing for the photos. I wonder what this word could be. Perhaps this is a bit more of a negative word than the words like assertive and brazen. Conceited, conceited. This is an adjective that means vain or proud like someone who is constantly taking selfies. Now being vain and being proud are not particularly nice qualities. So I think this word conceited definitely has more negative associations than the other two words we've looked at today. And we know that Fausto is quite, in the book, he is quite a nasty character. So conceited might be a good way to describe him. He seems very vain and proud to me. As I read these words, do you see if you can spot the synonyms of conceited. Vain, person, oaf, fool, snob, proud, actress, fellow arrogant and bully. Here's the word in a sentence. The conceited fool believed everything belongs to him. Can you pause the video and see if you can tell me which three words are synonyms for the word conceited? So the synonyms are vein, proud and arrogant. Which means the rest of the words are word pairs, which I'll read to you now. A conceited person, a conceited bully, a conceited oaf, a conceited fool, a conceited snob. A snob is somebody who thinks that they're better than everyone else or that they've got better taste than everyone else. A conceited actress and a conceited fellow, which is another word for a man or a boy. We can see looking at these word pairs that this is quite a negative word because a lot of the word pairs are negative. Like a bully or an oaf or a fool or a snob. Can you pause the video now and read these word pairs aloud? Excellent, well done. So very quickly can you tell me what does conceited mean? Well done, it means vain or proud. So we've learned these three new words. These are all words to describe a different type of confidence. So can you tell me which of these words matches with which image? Because they've got a bit jumbled up. Pause the video and have a go at now. Okay, so the first illustration shows assertive, the second word was brazen and the third one was conceited. And now my definitions have got muddled up. So just as before, could you pause the video and tell me which definition matches which word. Well done. So assertive means forceful or self-confident. Brazen means bold and shameless and conceited means vain or proud. Let's take a look at some sentences now and think about which word do you think fits well in the sentence. The hmm fool thought he was much better than everyone else and that everything belongs to him. The assertive fool, the brazen or the conceited fool. There's a bit of a clue there because one of the word pairs fool. I wonder if you can remember which word pair that matched up with, which of these adjectives. Pause the video and have a think about that now. Okay so the conceited fool. We know that when you're conceited, you're very arrogant and proud, which matches in the context of the sentence. Here's another sentence. Fausto hoped that his hmm stance would intimidate the colossal mountain that stood before him. Remember stance is how you might stand. And if you intimidate someone, you make him feel a bit frightened that they have to do what you say. Which of these adjectives do you think would fit well in this sentence? So Fausto hoped that his assertive stance. And finally, I'll lessen speech in this sentence. "Mountain, you are mine!" he bellowed loudly with his hmm arrogance. Which word would fit in this sentence? Brazen arrogance. Remember brazen means he's very bold or shameless. And to tell a mountain that he belongs to him, definitely that reeks of brazen arrogance. Lovely, so here is another final sentence. Assertively, the conceited man marched towards the ocean. We know what happens when he goes towards the ocean. So what do you notice about this example? What's happened to the word assertive? Pause the video and just have a little thing. That's right, we've added an ly or a -ly sound at the end. And that turns, this adjective assertive, which is a describing word into an adverb. An adverb describes how of a verb happens. So he assertively marched towards the ocean. So that could be so you could use these words and not only as adjectives but you could add ly to turn them into adverbs and then you can use them in more contexts. So now I'd like you to have a go. Writing a sentence using either the word assertive, brazen, or conceited. If you wanted to really challenge yourself, you could even try to write one sentence using each word. Here's a couple of sentence scaffolds to help you, because sometimes it can be quite difficult just thinking of an idea. As the hmm man marched towards the mountain, and then you need to say what he would do. So this is an example of a complex sentence. It starts with a subordinating conjunction as, and then we would have the main clause afterwards. As the hmm man marched towards the mountain, what might he be doing as he marched towards the mountain? And how could we describe this man using one of these adjectives? And here's another sentence scaffold you could use. His face grew red as he mmh. So again, we're using the same subordinating conjunction as, but this time we've got the main clause first, which is his face grew red, and then we're adding on as he, as he did what? What might happen as his face grew red? Quite often, people's face go red when they're feeling really angry. So what might be making him feel really angry? So you don't have to use either of these sentence scaffolds, but if you would like to, then you could use one of those to support you. So can you pause the video now and have a go at writing your own sentence? Okay, well done. You've worked so hard today and you have learned three really ambitious new adjectives that hopefully will be very helpful when you come to do your writing.
