﻿Oh hello everybody, you just caught me coming off the train after my journey back from Wales. Have you ever been on a train journey? Where did you go? Tell your screen. That's sounds so much fun! In this lesson, we will learn about different types of journeys. And we'll understand how trains have changed, what they looked like in the past, and what they're like now in the present. There will be three lessons on journeys, lesson one with me, two with Miss Sidenius, and three with Mrs. Garrard. I wonder where they've been on a train journey. In this lesson, we will listen to a story, learn about journeys, think how trains have changed, and then we will design and make a shape train. You're going to need your listening ears, some scissors and glue, and some paper cut into different shapes. Pause the video here, get what you need, and restart when you're ready. Great, we're ready to begin by listening to a story. And this story is all about a big, unexpected journey. It's called The Hundred Decker Bus by Mike Smith, and published by MacMillan. So get comfortable. I'm just going to get inside and we will begin. The Hundred Decker Bus , this looks like a fun journey to go on. It was a Tuesday morning like any other. As usual, the bus driver finished his cup of tea at 5:57. As usual, he put on his jacket at 5:58. And as usual, he clambered onto his double-decker bus at 5:59. A double-decker bus has two layers. At 6 o'clock exactly, he started the engine and drove out of the bus station. Just like every day, the man with the huge red tie got out at the roundabout. Just like every day, the lady with the pram got on at the library. And just like every day, the noisy children got on at Clover Drive. The driver sighed. He was bored with every day being the same. "If only we were in that hot air ballon," he thought. "We could float up and away, anywhere we like." Then, he noticed a little road that he had never seen before. "I wonder where that goes," he thought. The bus driver turned down the little road. This was not his usual route. It was exciting. Before long, the bus was heading out of the city and into the countryside. The bus carried on, it came to new and different towns with new and different bus stops. This was an adventure. Before long, the bus was full of happy people who had no idea where they were going. After a whole day, they reached the sea. "End of the road," said the driver, sadly. "We can't stop now," said the lady with the pram. "Let's take the ferry!" So they did. "Where are you going?" asked a group of sailors on the ferry. "Anywhere," said the driver. "We're on an adventure." "Will you give us a lift?" asked the sailors. "We'd love to," said the driver. "but we're full up." So the sailors had a long think. What could they do? The sailors worked hard all night hammering, clanking, and drilling. And the next morning, it was a gleaming, triple-decker bus that drove onto the shore. Word got around that a big bus was in town, and soon it was full again. So the passengers got together to build deck number four! I've never seen such a big bus. Things were going very happily on the four-decker bus, until, uh-oh. It's not going to fit over the bridge. "No problem," said the school children. "We've got an idea." And they invented a clever way of going under and over bridges. "There's no stopping us now," they said. And decks five, six, and seven soon followed. On the bus drove. Let's follow the map. "Mind that bus!" "Would you like a lift?" And the further it went, the taller it got. "Wow! Where are you going?" "Anywhere." Here it comes. After two months, the bus passed through a very hot country, so deck number 30 became a swimming pool with a deep end. Six months later, the bus was taller than the tallest sky-scraper. And a year after they set off, the bus was 100 decks high. The passengers had a huge party that lasted all night long. It was the very next day that the noise started. Clunk, clunk. "Oh dear," said the bus driver. The day after that, smoke started coming from the engine. "Dear, oh dear," said the driver. And the day after that, the bonnet flew off. "Dear, oh dear, oh dear," said the driver. The poor bus had broken down. Everyone got off and looked at each other. "Where are we going?" they asked the driver. "Nowhere," he replied, sadly. Suddenly, someone with sharp hearing said, "What's that noise?" "I can't here anything." "I thought I heard a voice." "Is it someone up there?" They all looked up, and up, and up. Wow. "Would you like a lift?" shouted the man in the ballon. And they all floated up, and away, and anywhere, because this was an adventure. The end. Wow, the people in this story certainly go on an exciting adventure. I wonder where I would go if I was on a 100-decker bus. I think I'd go to the beach and make a beach layer where you had space to build sandcastles and space to go in the sea. What decker would you build? Tell you screen. Oh I love your ideas. We could go on such an exciting journey. I'm on the road now, ready for the next adventure. So let's think about journeys. What is a journey? Well a journey is the trip that you take to get from one place to another. You might go on a short journey like the journey you take to school. That's a journey that you do lots and lots. Or you might go on a longer journey, somewhere exciting that you've never been before. A journey is a trip you take to get from one place to another. Have you been on a journey? Where did you go? I went on a journey to go to Croatia. My journey was on an aeroplane. I went up into the sky and all across Europe to get to Croatia. Where have you been on a journey? Tell your screen. Wow, you've been on lots of exciting journeys all over the place. What transport did you take? When I went on holidays to Croatia I took an aeroplane. But maybe you took something different like a car, or a train, or a ship. What transport did you take? Tell your screen. I went on a: Wow, we all took different forms of transport on our journeys. Different forms of transport are good for different journeys. You might want to go on a bicycle if it's a short journey, so you can do some exercise. But if it's a longer journey, you might want to go in a car. Or a really long journey across water, a boat or an aeroplane. There are lots of transport that we can take. One of the ways that we can travel and go on journeys is to take the train. Have you been on a train before? I go on a train sometimes when I go to work. And trains are great because they are really quick at getting us around. But trains haven't always been around. There was a time long, long ago before trains. Look at this picture. What do you notice about this picture? Tell your screen. I notice that: You might notice that there is a horse pulling something. Well before trains, people used to travel in a horse and cart because trains were not invented yet. They were not made. You might have noticed that the people in the picture are wearing different clothes to the clothes that people wear now. That's because this was a long time ago. And you might've noticed that the photo doesn't have colour. It is a black and white photograph, because it was taken a long time ago before trains were invented and before cameras had colour. So before trains, people used to have to rely on horse and cart to get around. Now what might the problem be with relying on a horse and cart for your journey? Tell your screen. That was a tricky question but lots of you had some great ideas. One of the problems of relying on horse and cart to get around was that the horse couldn't take you very far. And horses are animals. They are living creatures. So they would get very tired after pulling people a certain way. People started to want to go further and on longer journeys, so trains were invented. And the first type of train was a steam train. It was a stream train. Here is a picture of a stream train. Steam trains work when somebody lights the coal and the coal makes steam which powers the train. Somebody the lights the coal, I'm pointing to the coal, which produces steam, which powers the train to make it work. There are still some steam trains that exist today. You might have a seen a steam train at a museum, if you've been to a train museum. Steam trains were the first type of trains. But steam trains were really hard to run. They took a lot of effort to run. And people wanted to make trains faster and more reliable, so the electric train was invented. This was powered by electricity. Oh that's a long word. Electricity! Your turn. Electricity! And electric trains are super fast. This is an example of an electric train, and it might look more like the type of train you'd take today. Now most trains are powered by electric. So what has changed? Pause the screen here and tell it what has changed between steam trains and electric trains. Great. Now most trains are electric, which means that they are faster and not as difficult to run. Great work everybody. Now we've learnt a little bit about trains, we're going to design our own. And we're going to do that out of shapes. On this screen you can see some shapes. Call them out with me. Circle, square, triangle, rectangle. Well done, these are a bit trickier. Oval, and star. And shapes are all around us. What shapes can you see on this picture of a steam train? Tell your screen. I can see: Great work, we can see a circle face. We can see a rectangle funnel. We can see rectangles on the carriages. I can see two circles here. There are lots of shapes on the train. And now, we're going to use the shapes that we cut up earlier to design our own shape train. Here is mine. I have used some rectangles for the carriages, some circles for the wheels. Why have I chosen circles for the wheels? Tell your screen. I've chosen circles for the wheels because wheels need to be able to go round to help the train to move. I've noticed this star on this train and I've used one on mine. And I've used a square funnel, so it's a little bit shorter than this one. Now it's time for you to make your shape train. It might look like mine, or you might choose to model it on a different picture of a train. Number one, cut out the shapes. Number two, place them on the paper. And number three, stick them down. Remember, when you're cutting out shapes, always make sure you are supervised by an adult when using scissors. That's really important because scissors can be dangerous.
