﻿Hello everybody. My name is Simon and welcome to lesson 2 of your work on sorting objects by size. So let's get started. What are we going to learn today? We're going to learn to use vocabulary associated with size when comparing objects and to sort and group items based on their size. So here is some of the key vocabulary we're going to use. Big and biggest. Small and smallest. Long and longest. Short and shortest. And tall and tallest. For this lesson, you will need objects from your home that are different sizes, and this could be absolutely anything. I've used the objects I collected for lesson 1 and a shopping bag containing some groceries of different sizes as well. You might also use some shelves, perhaps your kitchen cupboards, or if you have a pantry. Pause the video now while you collect these resources. And here is the lesson structure. So we've said welcome. And you've now got your resources. We're going to do some modelling and adult-led activities. And then you'll move on to an independent sorting activity. Now, if you watched lesson 1 of unit 2, you might be able to tell me something about these two towers. What can you tell me? Well, I know that this tower is the biggest tower and I know this one is this smallest tower. I also know that this one is the tall tower and this one must be the short tower. If I lie them down, I could say that this is the long one and this one is the short one. So today I've divided up my table into two areas. I've put some green card on this one and some purple on this one. And these are going to help me to sort. So onto this side, on the purple side, I am going to put all my small items and on the green side, I'm going to put all of my big items. Let's have a look at the first one. This spoon, I wonder, which is it? Is it a big spoon or is it a small spoon? Well, I think it's a big spoon. I'm going to put it on the big side. Let's try another item. I've got this police car. Which one is it? Point at small or big, now. Which did you go for? Well, I think, that this one is a small police car. Small. Let's try another one. I've got a digger. Here's the digger. Which is it? Is it a big digger or is it a small digger? Did you get it right? It's a big digger. So we'll put it on the big side. Why don't you have a go? Your task is to sort the objects from your home that you gathered earlier. So you need to mark out two areas and label them using the words we've learned in lesson 1 and today. And sort your objects into the correct group. You could sort between big and small, or long and short, or tall and short. Pause the video now, while you do this activity. Welcome back. Did you work hard? As you can see, I've used different labels this time. This green side is for tall items and the purple side is for the short items. So let's have a go. Here is a box of cereal. Which is it? Short or tall? Point at the right one. Which one did you go for? I think that this is short. Let's try this box of cereal here. Which is it? Tall or short? Point to the right one. Did you get it right? It is tall. So why is this a useful thing to learn? Well, I've just been shopping and here's my shopping bag. And when I come to unpack this in my kitchen and put it all away in the cupboards, I might need to know whether it is a tall item, or a long item or a very small item so that I know where to put it and what shelf to put it on. So let's have a look in my shopping bag. So I've bought some orange squash. And I think that this might be a tall item, so I need to find a tall shelf. I've also got a melon. Now, this is a big melon. So I need a shelf with lots of space on it. And I've also got an apple. And the apple is small and short, so I only need a small space in my kitchen. Let's have a go at sorting onto the correct shelves. So I've got three shelves here. Now the middle shelf has got lots of space above it so I can fit tall things on it. The bottom shelf, I'm going to label for short things because there's not a lot of room. Where do you think the gherkins would go? Point to the right shelf. Did you put it on the short shelf? What do you think we should do with the ketchup? Which shelf should the ketchup go on? Is it tall or is it short? Point at the right shelf now. Let's have a look. The ketchup is tall and needs to go on the tall shelf. There's a box at the back. Where do you think that should go? Is it tall or is it short? Point at the right shelf now. Let's have a look. That's right, it's tall. It goes on the tall shelf. This time I've got different shelves. So the top shelf is very short, so I can only fit short items on there. The bottom shelf is long so I can fit long items on there. So let's have a look at the bottle. Is that long or short? Well, it's long. So it belongs on the long shelf. Where should the mushroom go? Is that short or long? Point at the shelf you think it belongs to. It belongs on the short shelf. Where do you think I should put the strawberry? Is it short or is it long? Well done! It's short. And that leaves us with one more item. The bread. Is the bread long or is the bread short? Point at the shelf you think I should put this bread on. Let's just check it fits. Yes, it does. It belongs on the long shelf. Task 2 is to sort onto the right shelves. So you need to label two shelves in your kitchen and take some groceries and sort them onto the correct shelves. You could sort the food items into different groups, like big and small, or tall and short. You could also sort foods into containers of different sizes. So for example, which items fit in the small container? Pause the video now while you complete the activity and when you finished, press play. Well done and thank you for working so hard. So today we've sorted items by size and we decided whether they were big or small, or tall or short, or long or short. And well done. You've done very, very well. This has been unit 2, lesson 2: sorting objects by size. If you need to make it easier, you could compare two of the same object, but different sizes, and sort into two groups. You could present a group of objects and label the odd one out. If you want to make it harder, you could introduce a third group showing medium-sized objects. Which items belong in this group, and why? Try sorting items in the fridge door, where you will have to think about the height, as well as the width. Other ideas could be to use this skill while you're shopping by sorting between big and small bags. And you could also sort a group of objects by size and then sequence them from smallest to biggest.
