﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using, and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. And today's lesson. Let's look at having a shower and all the steps involved in that and what you can do to become more independent and shower all on your own. This lesson includes the use of scissors. So to stay safe, please make sure you're sitting down while you do your cutting. Make sure an adult is with you while you're cutting. Always cut away from your body. Carefully watch what you are cutting, hold scissors by the handles, don't run while holding scissors and only cut things which an adult has said is okay for you to cut. Okay, so today we're going to look at showering and the sequence of a shower. Why is it important for us to have an order or sequence when we have a shower? Well, it helps you to keep track of where you've washed. It helps you to wash yourself thoroughly. so you can stay safe because there's soap, so you don't want to slip, and so that you can be independent. Some of the skills that you need to have a shower include having good balance, coz you need to stand up and good postural control, you need to have good fine motor skills so you can open the soap and wash yourself, you need to have a good sense of touch. you need to have good visual perception so you can see everything you're doing and you need to focus and pay good attention, so you can remember where you've washed. Okay? I want you to pause the video now to get the following items. So either get paper and a pen or pencil, or you can also get some scissors and glue and make sure that you have a parent or carer to supervise you. Restart once you're done. Okay, so before you go to the bathroom, when you're going to have your shower, you need to get your clean clothes. You need to get your toiletries if you like to keep them separately. So you have a little part for those and get your towel. Make sure that there's one in the bathroom for you to use. In the bathroom, you will need soap or shower gel, a cloth or flannel, a bath mat on the floor outside the shower, your towel, your clean clothes and you will need to close the bathroom door behind you, that's very important. Okay, so now let's look at the steps. So you're going to go into the bathroom, you've shut the door behind you, now you're going to place your towel close to the shower door, sometimes there's a hook or if there's not a hook, you can just put it on the floor outside of the shower door. Okay? Take off your clothes, then turn on the shower and make sure that it's a nice comfortable temperature. Okay? Step into the shower and then, make sure that the shower door, the shower curtain is closed behind you. Otherwise the floor could get really, really wet and could just mean that you have to spend ages, tidying it up. Okay, so now you're in the shower. You're going to wet your body. So you can stand in the shower, get nice and wet. Then you're going to start off by just washing and rinsing your face. Now you can use soap and a flannel, or you can just use your hands and just give your face a little wash. Then you're going to take some soap and you're going to put the soap onto a cloth or onto a flannel, and then you're going to wash. When you wash your body, you can try remembering something like head, shoulders, knees, and toes. To remind yourself that you start at the top of your body and work your way down. You start with your head and your face. You then wash your upper body and your arms. You wash your legs and feet and your private area, and you then give your body a good rinse under the shower. You're going to turn off the shower and you're going to wipe off any excess moisture from your body, so anything else that's wet. Okay? Before you get out of the shower, you need to tidy everything that you've used. So you need to make sure that the soap bottle or the shower gel is closed. That you've put the soap away. You need to make sure that you run out your flannel and you've hung it up nicely. Okay? Then carefully step out of the shower, dry your body with the towel. Get dressed into your clean clothes and hang up your towel and hanging up nicely. Don't just throw it over or thread it through make sure that it's open because next time you're going to use that towel, it'll be nice and dry then. Pause the video and go to the worksheet. Cut out the steps carefully and with adults supervision, then stick the steps in order from one to 18. If you don't have a printer, then just write the steps in the correct order, resume once you're finished. Okay, so this is the worksheet and these are the steps. So I've written them up in all jumbled order and you're going to cut them out underlined there, and then you going to stick them down to the boxes in order from number one. So let's have a look, What are we going to be doing first? more soap on the cloth? No. Shutting the bathroom door was very important. So yeah, I think that might be one of the first things we do. Squeezing the soap and the cloth, that's not going to come straight after. Okay, so you can see, have a look, there's a hanging your towel up, would be near the end. Getting undressed and putting your clothes in the laundry would be near the start. Okay? You are going to start, you're going to wash your face first and then you're going to wash your upper body and your arms. Then you going to wash your legs, your feet and your private areas. Okay? And then you're going to rinse yourself. So have a look at those, laid all out for yourself. You could lay it on the floor and then just see how you would order them. Some of them are going to be really easy, but then others, you might have to think, Oh, okay, I've wet the cloth, I've put soap on the cloth. Actually, I may need to add some more soap onto the cloth. Okay? Remember, take your time to get all the items that you need. Practise, practise, practise, enjoy your shower. It should be nice and relaxing. So some alternatives or some ways to make it a little bit easier for you is if you use a squeezy bottle of soap, then you might find that a lot easier than if you were using a bar of soap. You can use the handheld, the shower attachment to rinse you, if you find that the whole overhead shower is a little bit too overwhelming for you. Again, you can use a shower seat to a handrail. If it's tricky to keep your balance, when you wash your feet, you can use an anti-slip mat in the shower, so you don't slip. And if you find drying yourself with a towel is a bit tricky, you can get a nice comfy towelling bathrobe, and that could help you to dry your body.
