﻿Hello geographers, I'm Mr.Harding, and welcome to today's lesson where we will be learning about wind energy. So this is the sixth lesson of the energy units, and it's really exciting today because we're going to be doing a decision-making exercise, where we can be thinking about whether a wind farm should be built on the Isle of Lewis. So to be successful in today's lesson, there's a couple of things I need you to do. The first thing is to make sure you have the right equipment. So we make sure we have a pen and some lined paper. Can you also, so you can concentrate, turn off any notifications on your phones or just put them away. And if you can, try and find somewhere nice and quiet in your homes. Okay, that's it, from me for now. So if you just pause the video and make sure you are ready, and then we will begin. Last lesson, we looked at different types of renewable energy. Today, we're going to focus on wind energy and how it could potentially be a solution for our energy needs in future. So, what is wind energy? Have a look at that definition there, it reads: Turbines use energy from the wind to generate electricity, either on land or out at sea. They often have large wind farms. Do not get confused with windmills, which are similar in appearance. However, windmills do not generate electricity, but modern turbines do, as you can see on the right hand side. Okay, if you can copy that definition down onto your lined paper, just so you have that throughout today's lesson. So pause the video and quickly jot that down. There are two types of wind farms. We firstly, have onshore wind farms, which are wind farms built on lands, whereas offshore wind farms, which you can see on the right hand side, are built at sea. You might be thinking, why go to all the trouble of building a wind farm out at sea? How it's quite difficult to build. And that's a good question. However, out at sea, there tends to be very strong winds, which makes the production of energy more efficient and reliable. So what we're starting to do there is build the idea that where you place a wind farm is very important. We are now we're now going to go through some advantages and disadvantages of wind farms. A key term to introduce here is nimbyism. This stands for 'not in my back yard.' And it's a term used to describe the opinion of people who are against, let's say the building of wind farms in their local community. So they use the phrase, 'not in my backyard.' So if you can just write that down, just say, have that on your lined paper, because you might want to refer back to it later on. Okay. So your task here is to read through the advantages and disadvantages of wind farm. You need to decide whether each one is either an advantage or whether it's as a disadvantage. So the best thing for you to do is to write down two lists: one with the advantages and one with the disadvantages, and then we can self-assess. So let me just do one with you. So the first one, so it reads, wind turbines can be noisy. Each one can generate the same level of noise as a family car travelling at 70 miles per hour. So the thinking you need to do in your heads, is, is that a bad thing? Would I want to have something really noisy next to my house? So obviously, the answer is no. So you would mark that as a disadvantage that they are very noisy. So read through please, and pause the video now. Okay, great. Well done. So, let's self-assess. The pink statements, are the advantages and the purple statements, were the disadvantages. So pause the video now and self-assess. The question we are going to ask ourselves now, is the following: Is wind energy, the future? So we know, that the UK is facing an energy crisis. If changes are not made, within the next decade, then the UK could face blackouts due to an energy shortfall. The UK also is committed to tackling climate change. And we know, that the type of energy you choose to be part of your energy mix, has a big impact on that. If you are burning a lot of fossil fuels, then, as a country, you are going to be emitting a lot of greenhouse gases, which can cause climate change. So therefore, logical question that we're going to think about now, is: Could building a wind farm on the Isle of Lewis, be a solution for both of these issues. So will it sought out the energy crisis in the UK, or at least help sort out, and does it fall in line with the idea that the UK is committed to tackling climate change? So let's find out. As any good geographer would do, Let's find out where the Isle of Lewis is located. The Isle of Lewis is located in Northwest Scotland and is an island surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Please describe the location of the Isle of Lewis using the success criteria. Remember to be a good geographer and use the compass in your answer. So for example, for question two then, you should be using the compass. So pause the video now and write those three answers down. Okay, so, the Isle of Lewis, as I said before, is an island off the coast of Scotland. It's in the Northwest of Scotland and is in the Atlantic Ocean. So hopefully, you have given yourselves three ticks there. So well done if you have. In a moment, we're going to complete a decision-making exercise, where we will decide whether the Isle of Lewis should build a wind farm or not. Before we do, it's important to understand the context of the place, so the arguments for and against make more sense. The Isle of Lewis has a population of under 20,000, which is fairly small. This is important when making a decision, as any changes are not going to affect people on a large scale. Let's say in comparison to building a wind farm in London or Leeds. Secondly, a feature of the island's climate, is it has very strong winds, which makes it an ideal building place for an effective and efficient wind farm. Finally, the island is home to lots of wildlife. This is again an important factor because we know from the previous task, that wind farms can have a negative effect on wildlife, especially birds. A company called Lewis Wind Power, has proposed to build a wind farm on the islands, which would consist of 181 wind turbines, another infrastructure. It would supply 20% of Scotland's domestic energy and take three to four years to complete. So that's the proposal by the energy company, Lewis Wind Power. What we're going to do now is decide whether they should go ahead. We are now going to decide between two options; to either go ahead with the plans or to reject them. So I'm going to read through those two options now. So please follow along. Option one, go ahead with Lewis Wind Power plans, placing 181 new turbines across the islands. This could bring huge economic advantage to the locals, with new jobs in the proposed assembly yard. Locals who own land will also be paid rent for the wind turbine placement. Furthermore, this will produce 20% of Scotland's energy, therefore helping the UK meet its energy targets. So that's option one. Option two, reject the plans and instead, leave things as they are. Wind turbines, even on a small scale would damage the natural beauty of the islands. So it's best to keep the islands as it is. Fossil fuels are more reliable and cheaper in the short term. So it'll mean much better to continue with this. These can be imported from the mainlands and from abroad to maintain a good supply. So there are our options. What I'd like you to do now is to copy out the table you can see on the right hand side. If you don't want to draw the table, that's fine. Just copy out the statements with some space on the right hand side to either tick or cross. So pause the video now and let's set up the task. We are now ready, to begin our decision-making task. I'm going to model how to do this. So the table is designed to support your decision by going through a number of statements. For example, the first statement is, will create jobs on the islands. So how do you do this? Well, you need to think about those two options, which option will create jobs on the islands? So let's have a look at option one. Where in the option, does it say, it will create jobs? Or you can see, it says, with new jobs in the proposed assembly yards. So I would tick, option one, for will create jobs on the islands. I'll put a cross, if it doesn't do what the statement says, so will not cause visual pollution, will not cause noise pollution, but it will help the UK meet its energy needs. So therefore, I'm going through about ticking and crossing when appropriate, for both option one and two. And then once you get to the end, you need to just add up the amounts of ticks. Okay. So your task now is to complete the decision-making exercise by ticking or crossing each point. Once you are done, as I said before, just add up those ticks. If you want to go on to the next screen, it will have both options. Again, if you have a table already copied up, because that'll be easier for you to complete. So either pause now or just wait until the next slide. So please use this screen and pause. So you can read back through those options and complete the table. Okay. Pause now and off you go. Okay, great. Hopefully that was enjoyable. So, this is the correct answers. So if you can just self-assess and make sure, you've got the right ticks and crosses there. So as option two has more ticks, our decision is therefore, to not build the wind farm and to stick with the fossil fuels. Now some of you might be sitting there thinking, "why no, I'm really anti fossil fuels" which is fine. Just remember, it's important to know that this is a really simple way of making a decision and not all of these statements are equal value; So don't worry if you disagree. Okay, well done. You are now ready to demonstrate your learning. So you are going to explain whether the Isle of Lewis should build a wind farm. You need to explain two positive reasons for building a wind farm and then explain two negative reasons for building a wind farm. And then I'd like you to state your overall opinion to support you. I've written some sentence starters there. Just note that the overall opinion, you just need to copy out that sentence with a should or should not.
