In today's session, I'm going to be talking to you about sensory stories. We're going to be thinking about how sensory stories can help you to develop your attention. Then I'm going to show you a sensory story. I'm going to be sharing some hints and tips for adults so that they're able to help you to make some sensory stories at home. That way you'll be able to continue the fun. So for today's session, all you'll need is your favourite book. Adults, you'll also need the downloadable resource that's available on the Oak website with this lesson. Before we begin, make sure you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Turn off any distractions or notifications that are running on the device that you're using for this lesson and make sure you're both seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay. Let's start by doing some talking and thinking about sensory stories. Sensory stories tell a story using words and sensory activities. They're a great way to captivate the child's interest and bring the words in a story to life. Sensory stories involve all or some of the child's senses, and the activities are what make it so fun and motivating. Now it's time to watch a sensory story that I've prepared for you. It's called We're going on a Bare Hunt by Michael Rosen. Make sure you're comfortable and adjust the volume on your device so it's just right. And when you're ready, press Play, and we'll begin. We're going on a Bear Hunt is written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. It's with thanks to Walker Books for granting the permission that we're going to use this book to demonstrate a sensory story at home. The purpose of this task is to demonstrate how stories can be brought to life at home, using lots of sensory experiences. Hello, everybody. It's time for a story. Today's story is called We're going on a Bear Hunt. Are you ready? Sing along if you know the words. Okay. We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh! What's that? Long, wavy grass. We can't go over it. We can't go under it. Oh no! We have to go through it. Swish, swish, swish. Swish, swish, swish. Swish-sh-sh. Okay. We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh, what's that? A deep, cold river. Oh no! We can't go over it. We can't go under it. Oh no! We've got to go through it. Splish, splash, splosh. Splish, splash, splosh. Splish, splash, splosh. Okay. We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh, what's that? It's thick, oozy mud. Oh no! We can't go over it. We can't go under it. We're going to have to go through it. Oh no! Thick, oozy mud. Squelch, squelch, squelch. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh! Oh, what's that? It's a big, dark, green forest. We can't go over it. We can't go under it. We've got to go through it. Uh-uh! Stumble, stumble, trip. Stumble, stumble, trip. Stumble, stumble, trip. Oh, okay. We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh, uh-oh, what's that? It looks like a swirling, whirling snowstorm. We can't go over it. We can't go under it. We've got to go through it. Are we ready? Woo! Okay. Are we ready? We're going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Uh-oh. A cave. A gloomy, narrow cave. Oh! We can't go over it. We can't go under it. We're gonna have to go through it. Tiptoe. Tiptoe. Tipt-ah! What's that? I can see one shiny wet nose! Two furry ears! Two big googly eyes! It's a bear! Oh, quick! We've got to run home! Run, run, run, run, run, run! Run, run, run, run, run, run! Shut the door! Uh, we made it home. Well done, everyone. I hope you enjoyed that sensory story as much as I did. We can make sensory stories at home really easily. All you need to do is choose a story or a theme together. It doesn't always need to be a book though. We could make up our own stories about personal events at home. When we're thinking about planning our sensory story, what we first need to do is summarise it into short and interesting sentences. These sentences need to be as simple as possible. Once we've got our simple sentences, all we need to do is focus on the keywords. We need to try and find some sensory activities to pair with these keywords, to really bring it to life. We can use our imagination to plan sensory activities that are going to stimulate all or some of the child's senses. But remember, not everything has to be literal. Rain could be the noise of your fingers, pattering on the table or a water spray if you have one. It could even be water in a cup that you're wiggling your fingertips in. Now it's time to have a sensory story at home. Children, it's time to find your favourite book. Adults, take a few moments beforehand to plan some sensory activities, to help bring the story to life. Use the information in the downloadable resources to help you plan. Then tell the sensory story with your activities. I hope you have a fantastic time with this activity. Adults, be ready to tell your sensory stories time and time again. Aim to be consistent each time you do but you could try and build up more sensory experiences into each term. This would help you to increase the duration of the sensory story and therefore how long the child is attending for. Keep your enthusiasm up and if your child's attention starts to wander, you could draw them back in by saying their name. You could also encourage the child to retell the story and really get involved. This doesn't need to be with words. They could retell the story by using the sensory activities. Don't forget to continue to access the downloadable resource to help you plan more sensory stories at home. I've included some resources to help you record and reflect on how long your child is able to engage with the sensory story for, and what sensory activities they've really loved. This will help you to plan more sensory stories and incorporate their likes and interests into the future activities that you're going to do together. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson. A really big well done on all the fantastic attention you've achieved today through your sensory stories. I've just got two final things I'd like you to do now. First task is for the adults. I'd like you to look back on your notes and identify three important things that you've learned today. Secondly, children, if you're able to, please take a picture of some of your sensory stories and record this in your sensory story diary, which is in the downloadable resources attached. Ask your parent or carer to share it with your teacher at school so that they can see the fantastic progress that you're making with your attention.
