In this lesson, we're going to be looking at development of the law in the UK regarding same-sex relationships, same-sex marriage rather, and civil partnerships. We will also explore Christian, Islamic, and Secular views. In previous lessons, we've looked at key terms. Homosexual, heterosexual, civil partnership, and same-sex marriage. Can you remember what these terms mean? You're going to pause to see if you can write down the definitions of these terms and we'll check your answers. So pause your video at this point and write down the definitions of these terms. Good. Did you remember? Homosexuality is when someone is romantically or sexually attracted to the same sex. Heterosexuality is when someone is romantically or sexually attracted to the opposite sex, male or female. And civil partnership is a legal relationship entered into by a couple which provides them with similar legal rights to married couples. Same-sex marriage is a legal relationship entered into by a same-sex couple which provides them with the same legal rights to heterosexual married couples. So remember, we talked about the different laws that were enacted when it comes to the legislation, and we said that it was focused mainly on homosexuality. Again, just to refer back, this legislation was focused on male homosexuality, and homosexuality was outlawed in 1885. Remember, we talked about three key dates. In 1885, sexual acts between homosexual men were made illegal. In 1967, homosexual acts between men were declared legal for people over 21, except in the armed forces. And in 1994, the age of consent for homosexual acts between men is reduced to 18. What's missing from the list? What dates are missing, first of all? Good if you said 1885 and 1967. You're correct. What key law changes were made? Good if you said age of consent for homosexual acts between males was reduced to 18 in 1994. That's correct. And also, sexual acts between homosexual men are made illegal in 1885. What's missing from the list? Good, sexual acts between homosexual men are made illegal. Homosexual acts were declared legal for men over 21, except in the armed forces. And age of consent for homosexual acts between males is reduced to 18. Here are some quick fire questions. Remember, we talked about purpose of marriage being seven things, procreation, union, rearing children, it being a pattern for society, the unity between a man and a woman, one flesh, that's sexual intercourse, and sacrament, it's imparting a grace, and of course, a life-long union, so it's endless. We need to pause the video at this point and just fill in the blanks for me. Copy it, except fill in the blanks. Good, well done. I trust you've completed. That's awesome. Let's look over Christian, Muslim, and same-sex Marriage. What are their views when it comes to same-sex marriage? Well, I'd like you to pause your video at this point. I would like you to match these reasons with the explanations. Match to these reasons the explanations as we try to think about whether same-sex marriage does not fulfil the Christian purpose of marriage. We're going to decide if each point is strong or weak. If the statement is strong, write down strong under their reason. And if the statement is weak, write down weak followed by a criticism. So we're going to identify whether these statements that we saw earlier are strong or weak with your own reasons as to why. So pause your video at this point and complete the task. Resume once you're finished. Good. So here some potential responses. You could say that it's strong because biologically, women cannot produce sperm or men, eggs. And it's weakened by the two-mum approach. And there's lots of different strengths and weaknesses of each of these arguments. You can see some of those on your screen. So if you didn't get these, you can write these down as well. Pause your video and let's take notes of the strengths and weaknesses of these arguments. And also, so you see here some of the other ones and the strengths and their weaknesses. Good. Let's continue. We're going to finally talk about humanism and same-sex marriage. What do humanists say about same-sex marriage? Well, most humanists support equal rights between hetero and homosexual person, and therefore, want equality in marriage and support same-sex marriage. What is the purpose of marriage for humanists? Well, it's procreation, that's true. It's union, they like to put together two people. It's about rearing children, of course, and it's a pattern for society. But humanists may agree on some purposes of marriage as Christians and Muslims. Many humans will argue that same-sex marriage can achieve these purposes. In fact, many humanists agree that marriage is a good foundation for raising children and it's a good way to solidify a relationship. They also agree that the family unit's a good pattern for society. However, they will disagree with religious ideas that the couple become one flesh, that marriage is a sacrament, or that only God can part the couple once they are married. If they're focusing on same-sex marriage, some would argue that a same-sex couple cannot have children together naturally. However, many same-sex couples will raise children from a previous relationship or through adoption or surrogacy, and therefore, they would argue that same-sex marriage can fulfil these purposes of marriage. We will look at same-sex parenting more in one of our lessons later on. Okay, I want you to pause your video at this point and answer these three questions for me. What is humanism again? What ethical theory do humanists use as a guide? And give two reasons why many humanists are likely to believe that allowing same-sex marriage brings about the most happiness for the most people in society.
