In the previous lesson, we identified quarter past and quarter to on an analogue clock. In today's lesson, we will be reading time to the nearest five minutes. So when you're ready, let's begin. Let's have a look at today's lesson agenda. So first we'll begin by identifying past to the nearest five minutes. Then we'll move on to a talk task. Then we'll complete who's correct? And finally, you will complete your independent task. Before we begin today's lesson, you need the following items. You will need something to write with and something to write on. You will need a clock. If you don't have one, it's okay. And you will need a ruler. So please pause the video now and get the items that you need. Identifying past the hour to the nearest five minutes. Let's have a look at the clock on your screen. What time does the clock show and how do you know? So I know that the clock is showing five past one because the minute hand is on five, or is pointing to five on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to one on the hour scale. Great job. The clock is showing 10 past one. I know that the clock is showing 10 past one because the minute hand is pointing to five, 10 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to just after one. We know that this quarter past one because the minute hand is pointing to 15 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is just past one. Great work. So let's have a look at the clocks on our screen. What I would like you to do is to tell me what time the clocks are showing and to explain how you know. And once you're ready, we will go through the answers together. Great job. So looking at the first clock, the first clock is showing 20 past one. I know the clock is showing 20 past one because the minute hand is pointing to 20 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is just past one. The second clock is showing 25 past one. And I know the clock is showing 25 past one because the minute hand is pointing to 25 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to one. Great work. And third clock is showing half past one. And I know that the clock is showing half past one because the minute hand is pointing to 30 on the minute scale, and the hour hand is just after one. Great job if you got all of those correct. Moving on to our talk task. What I would like you to do is to read the time out loud. Then I would like you to find the matching clock face and explain how you know you are correct, okay? It would be great idea if you have a clock to show the time when your clock and to say it out loud. If you don't have a clock, that's okay. You can just say it out loud and match the correct time with the correct clock. And once you're ready, we will go through the answers together. Great. So let's have a look. The first clock I can see that the minute hand is five, 10, 15, 20, 25. So I know that the clock is showing 25 past one, okay? So I know that I need to find 25 past one. Good job The second clock is showing five past five, so I need to find five past five. Great work if you've got that correct. The third clock is showing 5, 10, 10 past four. Great work. And finally, the last clock is showing 20 past two. Great work if you've got all of that correct. Who's correct? So here we have Mary. Say, "Hi, Mary." And here we have Sam. Say, "Hi, Sam." So Mary and Sam are less a bit confused about what time it is. Sam thinks the clock is showing quarter to past nine, and Mary thinks the clock is showing quarter to nine. Who's correct? Pause the video now and share your answer with the screen. Great job. Sam is correct. It's quarter past nine. And how do you know? Explain to Mary. Why is she not correct? Good job. So we know that the clock is showing quarter past nine because the minute hand is pointing to 15 of the minute scale, and the hour hand is just after nine. Therefore, it's quarter past nine. Great work. Let's have a look at the next clock. Barry thinks it's one past five, and Sam thinks it's five past five. Who do you think is correct and can you explain how you know? Sam is correct again because we know that one past five is not correct because one is not the minute scale; it's actually the hour scale. Great job. So it's five minutes past, looking at the hour hand and hour scale, five minutes past five. Great work. And let's have a look at the next clock. Well, this time Mary's correct because she knows that it's quarter past seven. And we know it's quarter past seven because the minute hand is pointing to 15 on a minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to seven. Great job Here we know that Sam is getting a bit confused about his hour hand and his minute hand. Great work. So moving on to our independent task. What I would like you to do is to read the time on the clock and to circle or tick the person who is correct. Then I want you to explain how you know. Then we'll go through the answers together. Great work. Let's have a look at the answers. So the first clock is showing 20 past three, okay? So we know that is five, 10, 15, 20, so the minute hand is pointing to 20 minutes on the minute scale, and the hour hand is pointing to just after three. So it's 20 past three. Good work. The second clock is showing 25 past nine, okay? So let's check. Let's get counting together. Five, 10, 15, 20, 25. Good job. And finally, the last clock is showing five past seven, okay?
