﻿Hi, my name is Miss Hill. And today we are going to be looking at reading digital and analogue time. But before we begin, we need to make sure we've got our mathematical brains on. So, put on your hats, tighten your ties, and tell the computer, "Now I'm a mathematician." And now you're ready to get started. Here is today's lesson agenda. First, we're going to be starting the lesson by looking at a big picture before doing some exploring. We're then going to be looking at the difference between analogue and digital clocks before moving onto our independent task. But before we begin the lesson, please make sure you have the following resources. You'll need a pencil, a piece of paper, and a ruler. If you need to go get any of these things, please pause the video now. Great, let's get started with our lesson. So here we have a picture. Now I wonder what this picture is. Hmm. Ah, I can see in the background that there's an aeroplane. We must be in an airport as we also have a departures board. Now, why might we use time in an airport? We might use time in an airport because people need to know what time their flights leave. And you can see here, we've got the times which are missing, we have the city times as well, and we have the times here. Have a look at these two clocks. One is a digital clock and one is an analogue clock. But what's the same and what's different? Hmm. I can see the clock here is an analogue clock and it is showing us the numbers 12 all the way back around to 12. There's a minute hand, which is the longer hand and there is an hour hand, which is the shorter hand. And it is showing the time 8:05. Five minutes past eight. But we can't tell if it's AM or PM. Here we have a digital clock. It's telling us the time 8:05. Again, we can't really tell if it's 8:05 in the morning, AM, or 8:05 PM, in the afternoon. But both clocks are showing the same time. Here we have another set of clocks. Our analogue clock is showing 38 minutes past eight. Our analogue clock is showing 38 minutes past eight. Our long hand is showing 38 minutes past. And our digital clock is showing the time 8:38. So again, despite being an analogue and a digital clock, both clocks are showing the same time. Here we have another time. Our digital clock is telling us that it is 10:42 and our analogue clock is showing us the same. The hour hand is pointing to the 10 and the minute hand is pointing to 42 minutes past the hour. Hmm, what's the digital time going to be? Pause this video and have a think. That's right, our digital time is 11:22. As we can see, the hour hand is pointing to the 11 and the minute hand is pointing to 22 minutes past the hour. Hmm, what about this one? This is a tricky one. Pause the video and have a think. So this clock is showing us 3:52. Now, this is quite tricky because it looks like the hour hand is pointing to the four but, in fact, it's pointing to just before the four. We haven't quite hit four o'clock yet and our minute hand is pointing to 52. So we know it's 52 minutes past three. For your mini task, you're going to be matching up the analogue and the digital clocks. So remember to pause this video and match them up. Great job! So we know the minute hand is going to be pointing at the 11 as the 11 represents 55 minutes past the hour. Hour hand is going to be between the four and five. Remember, it's not pointing at the four. It's between the four and five. As in five minutes time, it will be five o'clock. What about this one? Pause the video. Well done! So we can see 12:26. So our minute hand is pointing to 26 minutes past and the hour hand is going to be pointing at the 12. Because we know it's 12:26. The hour hand is pointing to the four and the minute hand is pointing to 18 minutes past. 12:15, the hour hand is pointing to the 12 and the minute hand is pointing to three or 15 minutes past as the three represents 15 minutes past. And 7:58, your hour hand is between seven and eight and the minute hand is pointing to 58 minutes past. On the right-hand side, the times shown are 4:46, 11:08 and 7:03. Great job, everyone!
