﻿Hello, I'm Mr. Whitehead, and welcome to the RSHE Health and prevention: Basic health unit. Today, we're going to be looking at personal hygiene. I hope you're ready for this lesson. So let's get started. To successfully complete this lesson, you will need the following items, a paper or a notebook and a pen or a pencil. Let's have a look at the agenda for this lesson. So first of all, you should have already completed the intro quiz. We will then look up some key words that are really important for this lesson. We're then going to look at sweat glands during puberty, how they increase. We're then going to look at why you get stinky feet or why some people might get stinky feet during puberty. And last of all, we're going to take the exit quiz, which will be completed at the end of this lesson. Okay, let's take a look at some key words that you'll need to know for this lesson. So the first one is hygiene, and hygiene is any practise or activity that you do to keep things healthy and clean. So like washing your face and bushing your teeth, they can be seen as a hygienic activity or practise. Sweat glands are small glands that secrete sweat situated in the dermis of our skin. Such glands are found over most of the body, and have a simple coiled tubular structure. We'll be discussing through this lesson where we have a lot of sweat glands in our body. Okay, so let's have a little think about this question. In a moment, you're going to pause the video and just have a little think to yourself. You might want to jot a couple of ideas down before you resume the video. That's absolutely fine. I mainly want you to think about this question. What does being hygienic mean to you? Okay, pause the video and bring some ideas back once you've had a little think. Welcome back. Now let's take a look at what being hygiene means to me. So a couple of ideas that I came up with was washing my hands regularly, washing my hair, and bushing my teeth twice a day. So doing these things as well as many more will ensure that I stay hygienic, and my body stays healthy and clean. We're now going to look at our sweat glands during puberty. So as we go through puberty, our body just naturally increases the amount of hormones our body produces. And this increase of hormones produces more sweat from our glands, such as our armpits. As sweat multiplies, so does bacteria. It's not actually the sweat that makes us smell, or provides an odour, it's the bacteria that builds up as a result of the sweat with warm, moist areas that aren't being attended to during the day usually when we're out and about, and maybe be at school, or at work, or doing exercise. That is when the odour will start to build up in moist, warm areas. It's just building up bacteria. So this is what produces the odour. And how we can increase hygiene. So daily washing using soap and warm water, and then cold water. So what the warm water does is it washes out the pores and cleanses the pores. And the cold water encourages the pores to then close up so that dirt and bacteria, it's difficult to get into the pores once it closes up with the cold water. Need to target the active areas, and these active areas for odour and sweat are the armpits, and down in the genital area, and our feet, which we can get smelly feet. And so deodorant keeps us smelling fresh. The deodorant isn't the thing that stops the sweat or prevents the sweat. That's the antiperspirants. The antiperspirant decreases the amount of sweat, so it's really important that we're using deodorant and antiperspirant each day to reduce the amount of sweat that's being produced in our body, 'cause what we don't want is lots of odour through lack of washing and lots of sweat building up in these active areas. So, really important to make sure that we're washing daily with soap and warm water, and then cold. That we're targeting more so these active areas like our armpits, our genitals, and our feet. It's also important that we're using antiperspirant and deodorant. Okay, let's have a look at this statement. And then you're going to decide whether you think it is true or it's false. So we should aim to wash every other day. Do you think that is true or false? Take this opportunity now to just pause the video for a few seconds while you think about this. Once you're ready to go through the answer, hit the play button and we'll have a look. Welcome back. Now, let's take a look at the answer to this question. We should aim to wash every over day. Is that true or false? It is false. It is so important that we wash daily to ensure that we clean the bacteria away. And it's this bacteria, buildup of bacteria that produces this smelly odour from our sweat. As some of you might be aware, and experienced this, as you go through puberty, your feet will start to smell a lot more. And this is normal, but it's really important that we make sure our hygiene stays high to make sure that we stay healthy and clean. So sweat glands in our feet could produce up to one pint a day, which is quite staggering, the amount of sweat that can come out of our feet. And this can vary depending on how active we are. So the more active you are, the warmer your feet will be, the more sweat that is produced from your feet. And this can lead to an increase in smelly feet. So as our feet get warm and moist, as we said previously in the lesson, it can produce this bacteria which produces then this odour. So it's really important that we keep up our hygiene, especially in our feet. So again, washing daily using soap, warm water, and then cold to shut off the pores in our feet. I'd also recommend moisturising your feet, preferably in the evening. And washing your feet more than once a day is definitely advised 'cause your feet do get warm, they do get moist. So definitely keep on top of cleaning those feet. Ensure that your feet are dry before putting socks on. So if your feet are wet, just like we'd say with sweat, then it just produces the same processes it would with sweat. So it'd be wet, warm, moist, and it just produces bacteria. So make sure that your feet are dry before you put your socks on because that can just produce an odour by itself with a moist, warm area on the feet. It's also advised to put baby powder into shoes sometimes before you wear them. I do this for walking boots to keep them smelling nice and football boots too. It's important that you make sure that your feet do stay nice and dry during the day. And socks, wearing socks is so important. It does reduce foot odour 'cause it keeps them as dry as possible. Your feet will sweat more naturally. And it especially will increase the chances of blisters on your feet if you don't wear socks with your shoes. So massively advised to wear socks every time. That will reduce the amount of odour that's coming from your feet. Okay, let's have a take a look at this question, and you're going to have a go, see if you know the answer based on the information I've just given you. And the answer is one pint, which, as I said before, is a staggering amount of sweat. And the more sweat that comes to our feet without us washing, the more chances bacteria building up and us getting that odour, and nice, stinky feet. And this does increase during puberty, remember. So make sure that we are washing our feet regularly and putting socks on when we're wearing shoes. And even putting baby powder in our shoes, walking boots, and sports wear when we wear them. So your task for today, so on a piece of paper you need to create a poster promoting the importance of hygiene during puberty. So think about the stuff that we've spoke about today. So how our sweat glands increase the amount of sweat that's produced from them, and bacteria, and odour. And think about the importance of what we should do and why we should do that. So what we need to include. So what happens to our sweat glands during puberty and what this can lead to. And how we can prevent this and increase our hygiene.
