﻿Hi everyone. and welcome to this lesson on Christian practises. This is our first lesson in this series of lessons and my name is Mrs Day. It's lovely to see you today and thank you for joining us. So in today's lesson, we are going to look at worship. So the nature of worship. And today's lesson will focus on different types of worship within Christianity. So there are a range of ways that people worship. And today we are going to look at each of those. So what do you need? Please could you make sure that you have a pen or a pencil that you have some paper, and different coloured pen. That is simply so that you can mark your work. If you don't have those, please pause the video here and go to find it and then press resume. So in this lesson, this is what we will be doing. To start with, we will be looking at the definition of worship. So what is worship? Then we will be looking at different types of worship, and then we will be explaining why there are these different types of worship. So why does everyone not worshipping the same way? Why do we have different types? So that is the plan for today's lesson. So as we start, we need to consider what is worship? I'm sure you've heard the word before you hear of people worshipping things, but what actually is worship? If you want to pause the video here and write down your idea, you can do that. And let's think about what worship might be. So when people think about the word worship, sometimes they picture these images. So worship can look different. In the top image, we see quite expressive worship, in the bottom image, we see a church and you might think worship is when people go to church, it's when they sing hymns from hymn books and Christians would say that worship can be both of these things. So it's not just one size fits all worship can look different. So, what then is it? So worship is showing reverence or adoration, but what does that word reverence mean? It means a deep respect. So worship is showing a deep respect and adoration for something else. Not that is usually referring to talking about a god or a deity or something of a higher par is that reverence or respect that you hold for them. So remember a deep respect, reverence and an adoration. If you adore something, the highest the maximum amount of love, that's not simply liking it, that is adoring loving something. So reverence and adoration. So worship showing reverence or adoration. So then we need to consider how you do people worship? How do Christians actually worship? What does that look like? And what are the different styles? So firstly, we have liturgical worship. And this is a more traditional form of worship. It follows a set structure, which means the same thing will happen every week. People will be used to the structure. It uses set prayers and readings. So you might have seen on TV or been to a church where you are given something that you all read out together. Sometimes that's on a screen, and sometimes there are books around the church where people read from. So they will all be reading the same thing and saying the same prayers. This usually takes place in Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. So this liturgical structure usually happens in those denominations. A denomination is simply the type of church that it is. So it's a group that is a group in the church. And finally it is quite traditional. So liturgical worship usually takes place in a traditional form of church. So if you thought about high church might work a hundred, two hundred years ago, it was probably liturgical following a set structure and people saying the same things. So that is our first type of worship. Our second type of worship is non-liturgical worship. And this is the opposite. So this generally is a more informal style. So people might not wear as dressy clothes and it tends to focus more on the Bible and it's seems to be a bit more free. So people will not all say the same prayers, they won't follow this rigid structure as much, but someone might get up and read a passage from the Bible. This is so a set structure it does still have a set structure okay. So how's the structure? If you went to a non-liturgical worship service, you would still generally know what's going to happen. But the minister or the person leading the service might change that if they felt it was appropriate. So if they thought actually we should sing another song, they would be free to do that. Also when people pray in these non-liturgical services, they're usually personal and that person will just make up the prayer. So it's not normally from a set prayer that everyone follows. So there are two main types of worship liturgical and non-liturgical. So now we're going to do some quick fire questions to check your knowledge on liturgical worship and non-liturgical worship. So what style of worship is more traditional? Liturgical or non-liturgical? Five, four, three, two and one. And the answer is liturgical. It tends to be more traditional. Next question. Which style of worship might fit your personal prayer? You can write it down or point out at it liturgical or non-liturgical. Five, four, three two and one. The answer is non-liturgical. That is where people might say more personal things in their prayer. Which style of worship might allow the minister to make changes to the structure. Is it liturgical or non-liturgical? Five, four, three, two and one the answer is non-liturgical. Remember we said they still follow a structure, but it's more open to change. Which style of worship might you set prayers? Five, four, three, two and one. And the answer is liturgical worship. A set prayer is simply a prayer that has been prewritten. In the Church of England there is a book of common prayer that people will read together. Now we are going to consider two other styles of worship and the first one is public worship. So this is simply worshipping with other people. It's important to note that this could be liturgical or non-liturgical. So they can be both styles, but both of those can be done in public. And this will mostly happen on Sundays at church. So this public worship takes place mostly on Sundays when people gather together to worship. And as we said, if you look at the two images on the screen, this could be both liturgical and non-liturgical. Secondly, there is private worship. And this is simply worship being alone. This could also be liturgical or non-liturgical instruction. What do I mean by that? So people could you set prayers when they are praying alone, but they could also make things up as they go alone and they could also use their own prayers. An advantage of this is, is it may allow people to be more honest, as they know that no one is listening to them and it can happen anywhere. It doesn't need to be in a church service. People can do private worship anywhere they like. Rosary beads are really important part of private worship in the Roman Catholic Church. There's an image of the rosary beads on the screen. And what it is, is a necklace or a selection of beads usually in the form of a necklace that women Catholics will use while they pray. And as they go through their prayer, they will touch the beads. So each bead will represent something else that they're praying for. So all it is, is a practical thing to help them remember, to pray for certain things or people. Lots of different Christians will have different ways that they practise private worship. Some might write down their prayer, some might listen to worship music, some might read the Bible and then spend some time making notes on it. There's lots of different ways that Christians do this. Now we are going to have some more quick fire questions to see what you can remember. So which style of worship might allow a Christian to be more honest? Public worship or private worship? Five, four, three, two and one. It is of course private worship. Why? Simply because there's no one else around. Which style of worship might build community? Five, four, three, two and one. And the answer is public worship. If you do something with other people, it builds this idea of community. You will see that in sports teams. When people are all meeting together with the same aim. If we look at football team, they all have the same goal. Actually they're working hard together. And it's exactly the same in public worship. People meet together they have the same aim the same goal. Which type of worship only involves one person? Now you have all four options of worship. So liturgical, non-liturgical, public and private. And to add a little bit more of a challenge, it could be more than one. So you can write this down or point at the screen Five, four, three, two and one. And the answer is private worship. It only involves one person. Which type or types of worship might allow the minister to change the structure of a service? Remember it can be more than one. Five, four, three, two and one. And the answers are non-liturgical worship and public worship. Remember non-liturgical worship is a form of public worship. Which types of worship might follow set prayers or readings? Remember it can be more than one. Five, four, three, two and one. And the answers are liturgical worship, public worship and private worship. I would guess the one you might've missed is private worship, but remember if you worship by yourself, you could also follow set prayers or readings. And lots of people do that. Now that we have been through all of these different types of worship, I would like you to complete this task, to see what you remember. So you can pause the video and draw this table. And I would like you to fill it in with everything you can remember about liturgical worship, non-liturgical worship, public worship and private worship. Remember that liturgical and non-liturgical styles of worship, can come under public and private worship. So pause the video here and resume when you're finished and we will go through the answers together. Really well done. I hope that you have lots of ideas on your sheet of paper. Now let's look at your answers together. So pick up your second colour pen and we will go through these note. So liturgical worship. Usually it follows a set structure, it's more traditional, it follows set prayers or readings, and you would usually find a liturgical service in the Roman Catholic Church or the Church of England. Non-liturgical worship. Usually it's more informal. The minister could change the structure anytime, and prayer is usually personal. So if someone gets up to lead a prayer, it usually won't be from a set structure. It will be made up by that individual. Then public worship. So this could be liturgical or non-liturgical. Usually happens during a Sunday service and it builds community. So it's where people get to know each other, it builds these connections between members of the church. And then finally, private worship. This is worshipping a alone. It could be liturgical or non-liturgical and it could be more honest. You could also mention rosary beats there. If you want, you can pause the video now to take down any information you want from this table. So now we have both of our different styles of worship. But the question still remains, why are there different styles of worship? Why do people prefer different styles of worship? Why does that bring on not just worship the same way? Surely that would be easier. So now we're going to consider why people prefer different styles of worship. Very simply, people are different. Some people are loud, some people are quiet, some people are spontaneous and some people like routine. I'm sure if you think about some of your friends or your family, you can straight away spot differences in people's character. And you might have been thinking in this lesson "oh I would prefer that style, "but I think my friend would prefer that other style." And that is exactly the reason people are different. They have different preferences, they have different personalities and this all plays in to what type of worship they prefer. So now we're going to do a task where for each of the following people, I would like you to suggest which type of worship they would prefer to practise and why. So I will give you some information about their personality, about their character. And I would like you to suggest which style of worship they would most prefer. So I would like you to pause the video after I have read this and to write down which type of worship they might prefer and why. With some of these, you might argue more than one, that's totally fine. So let me read this first. Chloe is naturally someone who loves connecting with other people. She enjoys being honest and spontaneous. She doesn't like rigid structures and likes having freedom to express herself. So pause the video there, and you can suggest which type of worship she might like to practise. You could choose one out of liturgical and non-liturgical and one out of private and public. Great so you should have done either public and private and why and liturgical or non-liturgical and why. Let's have a look at our answers. So I worked on Chloe might practise public worship and non-liturgical worship. And here are some full sentences that you should have wrote something similar to. So Chloe might participate in public worship because she enjoys being with other people and building community. Chloe might participate in non-liturgical worship, because she likes to be spontaneous and doesn't like to be confined to a structure. Hopefully you got something like that. In your other coloured pen, you can simply mark yours and add extra points. Let's have a look at our next example. Jacob is naturally quite a shy person. He enjoys reading by himself and finds it easier to be honest on his own. Sometimes he struggles to know what to say and enjoys having some guidance. You all know what to do nice so choose public or private and liturgical or non-liturgical. And you need to explain why you have chosen both options. You can resume the video when you're finished and we will go through answers together. Great let's look at answers. So I would suggest that Jacob should practise public sorry, private worship and liturgical worship. Why? So Jacob might participate in private worship because he's comfortable by himself and finds it much easier to be honest. Jacob might participate in liturgical worship because he finds it hard to know what to say. Set prayers will help him to worship God. You might have got something like that but again, feel free with your second coloured pen to mark your work and add anything extra that you need. Let's move on to our next example. Nadia enjoys being surrounded by other people and loves being part of a community. She enjoys doing the same things as other people and the unity that it brings. She finds reading a lot together very helpful. Hopefully you've got the idea of this task note. So remember liturgical or non-liturgical, private or public, and your reasons why. Nadia might participant in public worship, because she likes to be with other people and build community. Nadia might participate in liturgical worship, because she likes to follow a structure and do the same thing as other people. Really well done. Let's move on to our final example. Tom finds it easier to connect to God by himself. He finds the other people make him feel under pressure. Tom also enjoys being honest and personal. He likes to pray about personal matters. Pause the video here. Remember liturgical or non-liturgical and private or public And your reasons why. You can press resume when you have finished. Great let's have a look at your answers. So Tom might practise private worship, and non-liturgical worship. Why? Tom might participate in private worship, because he finds it easier to connect with God by himself. Tom might participate in non-liturgical worship, because he likes to be honest and personal as he prays. Really well done on those tasks. And I hope that has helped you to understand why people genuinely just have different personalities, and that means that they connect to God in different ways. So Christians believe that there's no right or wrong way to connect to God, but actually if people's personalities are certain ways, they might find certain styles of worship easier. But we do know that in the Bible, there's lots of discussion of the importance of church. So while Christians think yes you might prefer to worship privately, you should still join public worship at times because church membership is important. Thank you for joining with us today.
