﻿Hi everyone, and welcome to art with me Mr Di Salvo I hope you're well today. Today we're going to be creating a mixed media work. So in today's lesson, we're going to be creating a mixed media work, which links to our theme and records of the skills and knowledge we have learnt. Question for you when we start any artwork, what we always look for? And I'm hoping straightaway, you're thinking and saying basic shapes, because of course, that's what we always look for. And a bit of a recap really of the media we've used so far. And so, so far we've used coffee as paint, We've used collage, We've used pen, we've used pattern work in terms of Zentangle, We've used just text, we've used pencil, and we've also used photography. Question is, which have been most successful for you? Can't tell you which one that is. It's entirely up to you, which has been most successful. But that's been ones I will always go with Decisions, decisions decisions. So, these are the questions you should ask yourself before creating an artwork today in terms of using mixed media or media that we've used before. Which media allowed you to create the strongest work? Which media would you like to use again? Which media could be combined? Which media use, sounds actually great can be combined to good effect? And will you draw, paint the same image better or something new? So is it something that you've already drawn that you would really love to do again? And if it's something new, and what and how does it link to our theme of war and conflict, 'cause that's where all our work links back to at the moment? So five questions for you. And by answering those five questions, you should know what to use and what to draw. Things you're going to need today, pencils, some paper and your chosen media and something to draw. It's entirely up to you or it's what you draw, or you use whatever you've got in your cupboards at home, whichever of those is fine. You need to get those And then once you've got those, it'll be time to begin. So, with creating, we're going to create a mix media work, using the skills we've previously learnt. And our aim is to use experiences and skills, we have learnt to create our strongest work yet. and think of it as something as a final piece. So idea of, rather than something completely new, it's more a case of trying to use what we know works best for us really well. And please don't just try and get it done. But try and get it done to the best of your ability and that means taking your time, then that's absolutely fine. If you have to keep pausing the video, it's absolutely fine. And again, if you're not sure of what you've watched, and it doesn't make sense to you if it didn't stick in your mind, it's time to rewind. That's going to come up during the lesson in terms of my demonstration there is some pause points at that point there. It's over to you to attempt the tasks. so let's begin. Okay, so I chose to draw a gas mask. I'm just going to pause for a second. So I really liked from way back when I just find it. Yeah, it was actually ideas of what I've done from before. So the coffee stain is actually from a lesson from a few weeks back where we use coffee stains, and I really liked that background. So I chose that and I found a picture of a gas mask that I wanted to draw. So first thing I'm going to do, is try and lightly sketch out the basic shapes. So it's just off the screen now I know, but you can see hopefully the circles of the nose piece and such forth. So I would like you now please, to draw out the basic shapes, shape or shapes of your object or objects. Okay. And once you've done that, lightly please then, let's carry on. So again, just lightly going in now and looking at some more details, so making sure that the circles are accurate and looking at what's were where, and then of course hopefully we can bring in the gas mask. Back to war in a very straightforward way. But again, with whatever object you have at home, you can use it links back. That's the key thing. So this whole body of work, it does link back to that theme of war conflict. And I'm just going in now into sort of refining my shapes just sort of bits, rubbing out some areas I'm not happy with just making sure that everything is there until I'm happy with those basic shapes. I'm going on no further. There's no point trying to add any of the details until I'm happy that I've got everything as I want it to be. And it's really important for you. So please continue on your basic shapes now and begin refining them so that they are accurate. So you don't just have some shapes but you have accurate shapes. And once you've done that, please hit play, and we'll carry on. Okay, so welcome back. So I chose to use coffee I really enjoyed using them before and you can see I've got a matchstick there and I thought I would use a sort of reverse sort of scratch line because the gas masks they actual kind of very cool t's now the sort of pipe work comes out of it, you can just see this sort of texture of it. So my thoughts were trying to use coffee and try and get a sort of texture of it. And then eventually build a build upon that I've got, right, well just here. So yeah, my thinking was about using sort of coffee if I just hold out to the camera, you'll see. And so again, depending on what you're using, I can't say the coffee 'cause you might not be using that whatever you're using now only begin to work if you've got accurate basic shapes. Okay? So they're accurate, I'm happy with those. I'm now going to start to add some time. Over to you now. So begin adding tones, texture, any of those things, but spend about five minutes on it, I guess five or so minutes on it. But make sure that basic shapes are accurate on once you've done that, hit play, and we'll carry on. Okay, so I then chose to use my finger because I use in the past in terms of colour and quality, if I did I could block in a lot of the lighter coffee. So to remind you I've got each coffee has got more water on it so therefore ,is lighter lighter so this is with the least water, the darkest, the middle amount of water so the middle sort of tone, that the least amount of water so our lightest tone. So you can see that I sort of vary them from using a different coffees and then, I found out I said the matchstick ever really sort of hard line where's my finger was really it was really good makeshift paintbrush blockiness or background cut. Again, you might be using coffee, that's fine, but it's over to you now to continue adding tone and block in the main part of it. And if you're using the texture, another technique, think about now getting the foundations right the majority of the background colour on it. And once you've done that, hit play and we'll carry on. So again, reach up to using the lot light tone. That's what lighter tone of colour I'm using my finger for that and I can refer back to a harder edge by using a matchstick. So Again, this idea of mixed media at the moment is using coffee. But you can see the pen countering really well now to really dark, darker tones to work. And again, you noticed I began to look at the texture of the object so that again, that sort of pipe, I recorded the venting part of the gas mask and has that kind of like woven effect. So I thought the cross hatching worked really well for that. So you can see now me going over and begin to add some cross hatching to show the sort of texture of the object. So over to you now to please be adding tone and texture to your work. And then once you've added some more, hit play, okay. Okay, so welcome back. And so again, yeah, sort of alternating between the texture so I had to kind of dry the paper of course, so please don't try and use pencil pen on top of wet coffee 'cause you'll just tear the paper but it does allow you to do things and a couple things I learnt now, I thought I would use pencil to kind of mix up the media, but what I didn't like and I'll be very honest with you is that I thought the pencil of it sort of stood out against the coffee and didn't sit as well as I'd hoped. Whereas here, where I use a pencil on top of the coffee, I really like that. So begin now adding your second media to your work. So this is a mixed media artworks in more than one media. So I've used coffee and I'm now using pencil to print my mixed media. So what you're using, it's over to you to begin that. Now, as I said, that pencil thing, the things right? the pencil, we kind of get over that I don't want to use pen again, because I've been too dark and the pencil just to me doesn't work. So I learned very quickly that combining coffee on top of what is beneath that works really well. But certainly on its own, it seems to not look as part of the art, it looks to sort of create, sort of disjointed doesn't look it's part of the actual artwork and whereas the pen on top of the coffee seems to really fit. So it kind of got over that in a few minutes. But, again, dark tones here so that we knew that I knew the gas mask had some really dark sort of venting holes. And so that really kind of pure black pen worked a lot better than trying to get a very dark coffee where it wouldn't have been as effective by doing that. So, once more over to you to continue now adding tone texture, details, refinements now so we've got the basic shape, we've got the block the majority of colour or colours, and we now kind of adding variety of tangent textures. Okay, welcome back. So looking now at some of the darker areas, right? We noticed on this code again, this is pipe that 'cause it's raised in between there's a receipts, and on this lower area, it's darker, so it just trying to darken those, those points in between and making sure that we should, we have that variety of those things that we spoke about, tone and texture. Really important, that I said, if you're not sure, always go lighter than darker. Because if it's too light, you can darken it really easy. If it's too dark, you can't lighten that easy, especially using things like the pen, the pencil, it's not so difficult, but I still wouldn't encourage that, but always, ll always suggest start off lighter than it's supposed to be all you think it is. And then if you're right, wonderful, make it darker. If you're wrong, then again, you can change that but if it's too dark to start off with, and that's why it may seem strange that I'm not going straight in but going back and forth twice because I make sure that I've got that kind of balance right. And always make sure and of course you can't see me off screen now but I'm constantly looking at the object and so constantly look at the object to make sure that I'm accurate, my shape, my tone, my texture. Obviously the camera won't be picking up on that now. But that's we need to make sure whatever you're doing right now you're looking at the object of your work within the object, looking at your work to really ensure that you're getting things in the right place, the right size, the right tone, the right texture, if there isn't texture is hugely important you do that. Again, using my fingers, so you could see using different techniques within that coffee, I quite like the softness of how to use my finger on that. And then looking at, pause, and then it's over to you now to again to really step up now and really refine those times textures before using a third media, then use that as well. It's not as if you've used the most media but which one's work best for you. Okay, welcome back. So, again, paint towards the end of our work to an extent not really finished yet, but looking now at improving areas that we want to. So we move to what, the kind of the eyes, the kind of goggles of the must to look at next, but just looking at where we can add some more darker tones. So with that you'll notice now with the pencil work here, why I went over with coffee and it just very carefully blends into the work now doesn't look it doesn't look separate to the last part of it. So, that was something I learnt just by adding coffee on top of the pencil. It just made the pencil sort of sit in it and feel like it was woven into the artwork rather than a separate thing altogether. Again, really gone away with using my hands as sort of makeshift paintbrush because it helps sort of soft the type of line comes from that. And now I just wanted to use a kind of curved line to understand that the the goggles of the mask, a setback and these it really now just some areas of refinements. So really now guys I would like you please to be really focused on adding little details that are going to bring your artwork out, so the textures you can use, the variety in tone. leaves and arose wise point shows my highlights very dark doesn't matter if you want to, but really make sure that you're showing all those points. And when you're done that case, hit play. And we'll look at how we're going to finish our work off. So, as you can see, really just carefully now looking at the different tones and textures and just consistently constantly adding that and in a way we can add those elements of darker and a bit more texture now describing them with a pen and really lighting that up because you can see that first of all on the mask, there are some rough areas. So just going out with a pen, close to the camera maybe, and just added some slight roughness not everywhere, but just adding a bit more texture to the work. So that's what I was finding really interesting with how it works is, when you have that tone texture, you know that's what kinder creates that work with sort of tactile feel to it. And you can always sense how rough or smooth something is by the use of line and of course are the mixed mediums we've got pencil, coffee and pen. One last thing that at the very end we'll speak about after the video. So that's the end of my demonstration. Just going to exit this. Go back to our presentation. And what went well, even better ifs, so, What went well? I am really pleased with the media. That's one of my real success. Something I found today is I really like the coffee, the pencil and the pen and how they sit together. That's what real plays without the use of texture and a real plus, even better if I think I would like to still work on some of the tones. And I would like to improve upon somewhat. And that's for me, but again, that's kind of what you've chosen to use today I would like you to ask yourself the same questions. What would you do next? And what would a professional artists do? So two questions. So what would you do next? I'll answer that for us. It's been nice, cover this in here, but in the eyes, I chose to afterwards, cut out the actual eyes and put behind of that and that, if you can remember from a few weeks ago, it's actually a photograph I edited of my own old family photographs. And just a piece of collage, the word alive. And this could represent a person, reflection of somebody, you know, that didn't make it or just a memory. So we've added another medium and I see about that at the tip about that photograph is this since you have your own photograph to edit, and so it's not just a photograph of the internet. what refresh lattice do? Well, they would look at this thing right, Surely, they will look at what they're pleased with has it given us more ideas to look at another theme within war and new techniques. So purposely, I've now if I was able to spend more time around looking at using coffee pencil and pen and see how I can develop that even further.
