﻿Measuring time in minutes and seconds. Hello everybody, this is Ms. Sidhu here and this is my cat Mr. Cash! In this lesson today, you will be learning how many seconds there are in a minute. You might want to use a clock, if you've got any clocks. Now let's get started! In the lesson today, we're going to be looking at understanding how time can be measured, learning about a minute hand on analogue clock like this one here. An independent task and an end-of-lesson quiz to see everything that we have remembered. You will need, in today's lesson, a pencil and a paper. There are times when you will have to pause the video and have a go at some of the activities yourself. Now, let's get started. Ooh! Days of the week. Hmm. I know a days of the week song! Maybe you know it too. You can sing it along with me. Okay. Great. Let's join in after three. 1,2,3. Days of the week, seven days. Days of the week, seven days. There's Monday and there's Tuesday, there's Wednesday and there's Thursday, there's Friday and there's Saturday, and then there's Sunday. Days of the week, seven days. Days of the week, seven days. What do you notice about all five pictures, there's something in all the pictures, can you have a look? So what can you see that's in all five of the pictures? Can you say it nice and loud? That's right! Wow, some of you are really working hard already in this lesson! You're right. I can see a clock in every picture. So we've got a clock here, another clock there, a clock here, a clock in Grandma's house, and a clock there. Who can tell me what we use clocks for? So what do we use clocks for? Can you say it nice and loud? Great job, we use a clock to tell the time. In this lesson, we are going to find all about minutes and seconds and about telling the time. Now, hmm, how long do you think a minute is? Have a think. When someone you know asks you to wait a minute, it can seem like a long time has passed, but actually, it isn't long at all. One minute is the same as sixty seconds. That's like us counting to sixty! And that's been one minute. So one minute is the same as sixty seconds. Here we have a clock! And the clock has some different hands on them like the clock I have here. With the clock, these things are called hands. We've got a hand here, a long blue hand which is the minute hand. We have another hand which is the hour hand. So that's the hour, the short hand which is the hour hand. We've got the long one which is the minute hand. Some clocks also have a second hand as well. So here, we've got the long hand here which is the minute hand. We've got the short one which is the hour hand, and we've got the second hand. The second hand, so here is a clock with a second hand and it goes round the clock the quickest out of all of the different hands. And once it gets to the top where the twelve is, so the second hand is the red one here, and once it goes all the way around and it goes to the number twelve, that's been one minute. So it does a whole turn from twelve, all the way to twelve, that has been one minute. So who can remember how many seconds there are in one minute? Well done, there's sixty seconds in one minute. Now, for your Talk Task, I want you to think about how many minutes do you think it takes for you to walk to your local shop? So have a think, how many minutes does it take for you to walk to your local shop? I know for my local shop, it takes me five minutes. So it's super quick. But when I go to my friend's house, it takes twenty minutes to walk to the shop. So I want you to think about how minutes do you think it takes to walk to your local shop? You may want to pause the video and have a go. Can you tell me how long it takes you to walk to your local shop? Super. Now, we are going to be doing something super exciting. I want you to think about how many star jumps, so it's nice and safe and clear around where you are so that it's safe enough for you to do a star jump, so make sure you are being super careful and I'm going to count ten seconds. So I'm going to count down from ten seconds. So when I say go, you're going to do as many star jumps as you can and when I say stop, you have to stop. And remember how many star jumps you have done. Are you ready? Steady? Go! Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Zero. Stop! Can you tell me how any star jumps can you do in ten seconds? Wow, that's a lot. Good job! Now, this time, how many claps can you do in twenty seconds? So how many times can you clap in twenty seconds, so a clap like this, how many times can you clap in twenty seconds? So when I say go, you're going to clap as many times as you can and counting in your head or saying it out loud and when I say stop, you have to stop and remember the number. Are you ready? Steady? Go! Twenty. Nineteen. Eighteen. Seventeen. Sixteen. Fifteen. Fourteen. Thirteen. Twelve. Eleven. Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Zero. And stop! So how many times can you clap in twenty seconds, can you tell me? Wow, that's so many claps, your hands must be hurting! Now, I think you're ready for today's Independent Task. So how long do these activities take you? So you can count or you can use a watch or a clock or a timer to find out how long do these activities take you? So going for a walk, so you might just go for a walk maybe in your garden or around the playground or even around your room that you're in at the moment. And then I want you to think how long does it take for you to do a single wink, like this. And kicking a ball, or if you haven't got a ball, you can do a different activity, you can choose some other activities to do. Make sure that you are keeping safe and you've got enough space around you. Then, after you've done these activities, I want you to think about did they take more or less than a minute? So if they took longer than a minute, I want you to put them in here. If they were shorter than a minute, you can put them in here.
