﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. In today's lesson, we're going to learn how to make a sandwich. I love this lesson, 'cause it's my favourite sandwich topping. Before we start today's lesson, I just want to let you know that the lesson is going to involve the use of a butter knife. Okay, so you need to be safe. Please make sure that an adult is with you when making a sandwich. Make sure you take very good care of your fingers. Never walk around carrying the knife and sit at a table or stand at a counter top for more stability. Okay, before we make our own sandwich, let's think about the reasons why we would want to make our own sandwich. Well, you can make it just the way you like it, okay? You can then make a packed lunch. You could make a sandwich for someone else. And it'll give you a lot of independence and also a lot of confidence. What are the skills we need in order to be able to make a sandwich? Well, you need good bilateral coordination skills, so that's using both sides of your body together, you need really good fine motor skills, your hand-eye coordination needs to be quite good, 'cause you're going to look at the jam jar, say for example, and take it out, your visual perception has to be good, your touch perception has to be good. You need to pay really good attention and concentrate really well, and that also means that you'll be able to stay safe, so you need to have safety awareness. Pause the video now to get the items you will need. Please ask your parent or carer to help you, okay? So, I want you to either go to a table or to a counter top, you can get a cutting board or a large plate, some pre-sliced bread of your choice, obviously taking into consideration any allergies you might have, some butter or spread of your choice, and then a spreadable topping, so for example, jam or peanut butter or marmite, and then a spreading knife or a butter knife. Restart once you're done. Our first step is going to be to butter the bread. So, put two slices of bread side by side on the cutting board or the large plate, open the container which holds the butter, so you can use your pincer grip, then use the knife, look at where my finger is placed, to get some of the butter, and then you're going to use your left hand, in my case, or your non-dominant hand to hold the bread as you spread the butter on there, so you can see I'm holding the knife flat and dragging it towards me. Okay? And you can even turn the bread as you go along to add the butter, okay? You are then going to get a little bit of more butter or spread and very carefully, you are going to spread it onto the bread. Okay. Really important just to close the container as you go along and put it out of your way. Pause the video there to practise buttering the bread. Restart once you're finished. Next, we're going to add our toppings. So, you're going to open the container. I have got peanut butter and jam, 'cause they're my favourites, and now you're going to gently spread the toppings on. With something like peanut butter, it can be a little bit tricky, so I do one side, and then I'll actually turn the bread around, so change the position of the bread, and then add spread some more. Okay? And you can see I'm going all the way around to do that so that it's even, the amount of peanut butter is on the whole sandwich. Close the jar. Put it out of the way. Now you're going to take your jam. I usually have a jam in a squeezy bottle, but you might just have yours in a jar and squeeze, close the bottle and put it out of your way. And there you can see how I'm rotating the bread as I'm spreading the jam on, okay? Pause the video there to do that step. Restart once you're finished. Okay, now to make your sandwich, you're simply going to put one slice of bread on top of the other. Make sure that the two sides that have the spread on go together, okay? Hold your sandwich with one hand and make sure it's steady, and then you're going to cut, okay? So, you're going to push down and saw as you cut along. You can cut it in half or in quarters, they can be squares or triangles, whatever you want, okay? And that's the lovely thing about making your own sandwiches, is that you can make it exactly the way you want. Pause the video there to practise cutting your sandwich. Restart once you're finished. Remember, take your time, practise, practise, practise, always have your shoulders down so you're relaxed and have fun, just think of all the amazing sandwiches you can make. Okay? Some things you can do if you find that this is a little bit hard is you can sit down at the table if you get tired standing up or if the kitchen counter is not at the right height for you, you can replace the spreadable toppings with things such as cheese slices or sliced meat. As you get more confident with your knife skills, you can use a sharper knife to cut the sandwiches, but always ask your parent or carer first. Okay, and make sure that they're there to supervise you. And for something really fun, you can use a cookie cutter instead of a knife to cut your sandwich into fun shapes.
