﻿Hello, and welcome to architecture: Understanding the world around us. This is lesson number nine of 16 and the first of two lessons where we're going to be looking at the artist Lucy Jones. So who is Lucy Jones? Lucy Jones is a mixed media artist living and working in Edinburgh's new town. Her work is mainly influenced by the Georgian architecture that surrounds her. To make her art, she often uses old books with relevant texts. So the images have a literary as well as a visual story. So you can imagine if you were to create the Hogwarts Castle, you might use Harry Potter books to do so. That's what she does as well. In this artwork by Lucy Jones, the artist is drawn over her lines and marks more than once. Why do you think she has chosen to do that? And what effect does it have on the artwork? Pause to complete your task. So have a little think and then press play. So I think similar to the Steven Wiltshire lesson that we have done previously, she does the lines over and over again because it almost corrects and mistakes, and it creates a real impact in a idea of kind of movement of fluidity to the artwork. There are a few reasons why she might do this. So it'd be interesting to learn what you thought as well. In this artwork, Lucy Jones uses a range of media from collage and oil pastels to watercolour. What effect does that have on the artwork? Why do you think she's chosen to choose so many different medias in one piece of artwork? Pause the video, have a little think and then press play. So as a mixed media artist, I think Lucy Jones chooses to use so many different medias because it has a real element of a game movement and texture to the work. It makes it really interesting to look at all the lines and the textures and the tones of the work, a different throughout the page. Whereas if you just use one media, such as pencil, that will be quite similar. So now we have considered Lucy Jones's style. We can begin to do our own Lucy Jones inspired piece of artwork. So we're going to create a city inspired by Lucy Jones's techniques of drawing over her lines and using mixed media. Take your time when creating your artwork. As this is not a case of getting it done, but rather a case of doing it to the best of your ability. If you need to practise then, please do. Because this is about developing your skills to create something new and original. If you need to pause the lesson and watch it again, then please do because you want to make some artwork that you're really proud of. Today you are going to need: Glue, paper to collage with So that could be anything from old magazines to bits of newspaper, to wrappers, to packaging, to bits of tissue paper, whatever you've got lying around in the house, a printed picture of a building, and a pencil You can choose to do a building or a CTC. That's up to you. Pause the video, go get your resources, and then come back. So, let's start. This is a technique we've been through before. So you're going to scribble on the back of the artwork or scribble on the back of the drawing, and then you're going to make sure you get all the graphite deposited on the back of the page. Again, if you would like to draw it from scratch, you can do, but that, isn't the skill that we're going for today. We're trying to use mixed media. So that's what we're learning. And we're not learning drawing skills. If you've got the time, these lessons are around an hour long. So if you put the time to do the drawing and make the lesson longer, then please do that, cause it's always good to develop your drawing skills. But in the meantime, we could just do this transfer and trace scale. That technique where you deposit the graphite off the back of the page, you flip the page over and you press down with a pen really hard as you go over the lines of the image. Then once you left off the paper that the graphite from the pencil has been deposited onto the paper, leaving a print of the building. So then you don't have to worry too much about the placement. So you can see that I'm using a ruler and that's just to ensure my lines are straight and crisp. It also means I can work a bit quicker because I can, as you can see, just move the ruler and do the lines as I go along above them, thinking about the placement of everything. And I'm trying to get as much detail as possible, but remember, this is just an outline. So don't go mad on the details and start adding individual leaves and things like that. It's just to get the proportions in the first place. So they were, once that's done, you've got the printed image of the house. Pause the video, do that part of the task and then come back. Okay. So the next part is this. There's not a video demonstration of this because I want to just talk you through it. I've used the background image that I've just transferred on and I've cut around. So with some pieces of paper and I've stuck them on the top. This currently doesn't really look like a house. It currently doesn't really look like anything. I've used different texture to paper. So I've used baking paper, which is quite waxy. I've used like a silver shiny card. I've used tissue paper, which seems very soft. And I've used birthday wrapping paper as well. You can use as much or as little papers as you'd like, if you want to do every single bit part of the building as a collage, that's fine. If you would like to just do just the windows or the door, then that's fine too. We're going to start adding parts of the building and the details over the top next lesson. So currently you should just have a drawn outline of the building and some collage over the top of the outline. We do the outline first. So you know where to collage. What's also quite helpful is if you keep that drawing where you've the printed pitch, where you've graphite it on the back, you can then turn that onto the collaging paper. And for example, just draw around the door and then you've got that perfect shape of the door, which you can then stick over the top of your traced transcard drawing. So pause this video, and complete your collage task. Next lesson, we're going to be looking at adding further media and colour to our Lucy Jones inspired artwork.
