﻿Hello everybody! My name's Emma. I'm really looking forward to today's session, and I hope you are too. But before we get started, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak, are trying to support any approaches you might already be using, and any work that you might have already been set. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure, or have questions, then please contact your usual speech and language therapy team, or your child's school. In today's lesson, we're talking about good listening. We're going to be practising our good listening skills, by listening to some information. And I'm going to be sharing how you can work listening games in to your home, and have fun with listening every day. So for today's session, you'll need your listening poster. You might have made this in lesson nine, or 10. If you want, you can go back to lesson nine, and make the poster, if you don't already have one. You don't need it, 'cause we'll be recapping it but if you want it you can. You'll also need some cans, and a soft ball, and some pictures. The pictures could be of everyday objects. You could cut them out of magazines, or print them off the computer. Adults, you'll need the downloadable resource that's available on the Oak website with this lesson. So before we begin, find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions, and make sure that you and your adult or talking partner are seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Let's start by doing some thinking and talking about good listening. Learning language and new words is mostly a listening process. Children need to be able to focus their listening skills in order to learn and acquire new skills and information. It can be really helpful to provide five to 10 minutes of games every day where we're focusing on listening. This will not only help with your listening skills, but also help to develop language and communication skills. For our first activity, I'd like you to pause the video here. Have a think about the parts of the body that we use for listening. When you're ready, press play, and we'll continue with the lesson. So the parts of the body that we use for listening, are all here. You might have a few more ideas, and that's wonderful but let's run through mine. If I've got any ideas that you haven't, feel free to write them down. One of the parts of the body that we use for listening are these. It's important that we're looking when we're listening. So that we can understand who, or what, is making the noise. And what it is that that noise means. Our ears, are used for hearing. These are really important for listening to what is being said. It also helps if our body, our hands, and our feet are still when we're listening. If we're running around, or fidgeting, and moving in different places, we might not be able to listen to all the information. And might miss out on things, because we weren't there to hear them. Our heads are also really important for listening. It's our heads that do the thinking about what we're hearing. We're going to play a quick game of Simon Says. This is a great game to help us practise our listening and looking. Adults, start by giving simple instructions like, Simon Says touch your ears. If you want, you can make this game a little trickier by adding the Simon Says rule. This is where you listen carefully for whether the speaker has said Simon Says touch your toes or just said touch your toes. If the speaker doesn't say Simon Says, then you don't follow the instruction. We could also try adding sequences to our instructions. For example, Simon says clap your hands and turn around. Don't forget to take turns being in charge of the speaker who says Simon Says. Once you've had a couple of turns with this game, come back to the video and press play and we'll continue with the lesson. Over the last couple of lessons, I've talked about how important it is to have five or 10 minutes every day where we're focusing on listening. These activities can have a strong listening focus, but they'll also help with things like language, communication, and turn taking. Whenever we're practising our listening skills, and in fact any time we can. It would be great to have our good listening poster available to help us remember what our body needs to be doing to do the best possible listening. One last listening activity before the end of the lesson today. This activity is called Skittles. Clear some space, or even better, play this game outside. You'll need some cans, and you'll need to attach your pictures of every day objects to these cans. Just like how I have done here, in the picture on the left. You could start with three or four cans, but maybe work up to more. Take it in turns to pick one picture that the other person has to try and bowl down like a skittle, with a bowl. You could try just naming the pictures to aim for. Or, you could practise listening to more information by giving a description. For example, you could say this thing has four legs and wears a collar. My partner would have to try and bowl down the can that has the picture of the dog on it. Don't forget to keep using your good listening poster throughout this activity. When you're finished, come back to the lesson and we'll finish. And we'll continue. Don't forget to continue to use the downloadable resource to help plan more listening activities in your every day. Adults, use the resources to record and reflect on how the child is progressing with their listening and developing their attention over time. Well that brings us to the end of today's lesson.
