﻿Hello everybody. My name is Emma. I'm really looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. But before we get started, just a quick reminder, we here at OAK are trying to support any approaches you might already be using and any work that you might have already been sent. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have questions, then please contact your usual speech and language therapy team or your child's school. In today's session, we will be continuing to talk and think about listening and remembering. I'm going to share a few hints and tips about things that can help us to remember we'll play some listening and memory games, and then I'll share some more ideas for the kinds of listening and memory games that you could play at home too. Before we begin, for today, you'll need some pictures of things that you might find in outer space. You could find these on the internet or maybe in a book. You'll also need your listening poster. We made this in lesson nine. But don't worry if you don't have it, we'll recap what you need to know. You also need your downloadable resource that's available on the OAK website with this lesson. So before we begin, find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions on the device that you're using for this lesson. And make sure that you and your talking partner are both seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Let's do some talking and thinking about listening and remembering. Most of the information that we learn is through language and spoken words. In order to learn new information and be able to follow instructions, we need to be able to process what we hear and store it in our memory. The activities that we're going to talk about today focus mostly on recalling. Recalling just means saying something back. Activities will help to reinforce our listening memory, our memory for the things that we're hearing. But they'll also give us the opportunity to think about some memory strategies, strategies are things that we can do to help ourselves. Adults, it's really important that you check that the child understands the concepts and words being talked about in the activity before we do them. If they don't, you can make tweaks and changes to the tasks to include words that they do understand so that they're accessible. Okay, let's begin with our first activity. It's called, "I went shopping and I bought..." You need to take it in turns with your talking partner to say what you bought on a pretend trip to the supermarket. You have to remember the items the other person has said too. A bit like this, I went to the supermarket and I bought an apple. I went to the supermarket and I bought an apple and some bread. Continue on for as long as you can. Once you finish this activity, come back to the video and press play and we'll continue the lesson. Having a strong memory for what we hear is really important. We can strengthen our memory though by creating hooks. Hooks could be seeing a picture of the word or the information that's been given to us, or maybe drawing that picture, or writing it down. Thinking about the sounds of a word, or those sounds that are in a word can also really help us to remember the word too. It can also help to find other words that mean the same thing. So that we can latch what we're hearing onto information we already have. These hooks help the information to stay in our memory so that we can save it and learn it. Let's play another game of "I went to the _____, and I saw..." It's the same as I went shopping and bought game. But you could spend some time finding pictures of each item that you're going to see first. For example, if we were going to space and we use the pictures that we found of things in outer space, one at a time, place a picture of each item down that you say you see. Let's see if having pictures of the items that we see on our pretend trip helps us to remember what we and the other person have said. Let's see if seeing pictures of items can help to hook them in our memory more. When you finished, come back to the video and press play, and we'll continue. Before we finish the lesson today, I've got one really important message. Children, it's always okay to ask for help or to hear information again. You can do this by asking adults, "Can you repeat that or I don't understand." Everyone needs help to remember things at times, even adults, I bet your parents write a shopping list, right? That's just one way that they help themselves to remember information. And then so they don't forget it. Could you imagine if they forgot their shopping list, we might not end up with any toilet roll. Adults, this information is for you. It's so important to be aware of how we give information to the children in order to support their listening and memory. We must make sure that we slow down and pause between parts of an instruction if we're giving them. we can remind the children of good listening before giving instructions to really make sure that their bodies are doing everything they need to do to be able to listen properly. If you giving instruction, keep it simple, and give it in the order that it needs to be done. Avoid befores and afters, or too many parts of instruction. These can be really confusing. Another really helpful thing that we can do is ask the children to tell us what we've said, or what they've understood. And avoid the question "Do you understand?" Completely. The question "Do you understand?" gives the answer yes or no. And this really tells us nothing about how much the child has understood or remembered. So when giving an instruction or long bits of information, we can try using memory strategies to create more hooks. There are lots of ideas in the downloadable resource for how we could do this. Use the downloadable resource to help plan more listening and memory activities at home. Try and plan something every day. Don't forget to use the resources to record or reflect on how you listened and what really helped your memory to develop over time. Well, that brings us to the end of today's lesson.
