﻿Hello everybody. My name's Emma. I'm really looking forward to today's session, and I hope you are too. But before we get started, just a quick reminder. We here at Oak, are trying to support any approaches, you might already be using, and any work that you might have already been set. We know this lesson, is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure, or have questions, then please contact your usual speech, and language therapy team, or your child's school. In today's lesson, We're carrying on thinking about why listening is so important. We're going to have some fun with some listening activities, and then I'm going to share how you could have some of these fun activities at home. So before we begin, you'll need to gather up a few things. You'll need a cup, or two plastic cups actually, some straws, and some balls like ping pong balls, or screwed up paper balls would be absolutely perfect. Adults, you'll need the downloadable resources for today's lesson. It's available on the Oak website, where you found this lesson. Okay, so before we begin find a quiet place, where you won't be disturbed for the lesson, and turn off any distractions. We want to be able to do our best listening in this lesson. Make sure that you and your talking partner, or adult, are sat comfortably, and then when you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by talking and thinking about listening and listening games. We need to be listening in order to learn new words, and new information. Our bodies are what we use for listening, and there are parts of body, that are especially important. The first thing that's really important, are these, these are our? Excellent, our ears. Our ears are for hearing. Our ears are for listening. Our eyes are also really important too. It helps us when we're listening to be looking at the thing, that's talking, or making a noise. It helps us understand what we're hearing. Our bodies are also really important for listening. It's important our bodies stay in one place, and also are as still as possible. If we're running around, or being fidgety, we might miss some of the information. Lastly, our heads are really important. Our heads are important for listening because it's where we do the thinking, about what we've heard. We're going to play a quick listening game. This one's really fun, so I hope you enjoy it. It's called Run and Touch. Adults, you need to check that the child knows and understands the names of the things, that you're going to tell them to run and touch. They need to be doing their best listening, before you give the instruction to run and touch something. When you've had a couple of days of this activity, come back to the lesson, and press play to continue. We can have so much fun with listening games at home. It can be really helpful to provide five to 10 minutes of listening games every day. These will not only help us with our listening, but they'll also help us with our language, and our communication. Listening games could include, listening, and naming sounds that we hear, as well as listening games, that mean we have to follow an instruction. Don't forget, It's also really helpful, if we can have our listening poster, that we made in our last lesson, out and about, so that we can see it, and remember what good listening means. Let's talk about what you hear, when you go to the zoo, or supermarket, or anywhere of your choice. Name a few places that you go, or have been to. With your adult or talking partner, talk about what you heard there. Have you got any pictures of these things to help you? when you finished, press play to continue with the rest of the lesson. As I said, it would be great if we can continue to work with, and look at our listening poster. It will really help our bodies to do the best possible listening. Listening games that require close listening can be things like stop and go activities, listen, and do activities, or things like pass the ball. This is where you have to look at the person who has the ball , and you have to use your ears, in case they call your name. That's when you know you have to catch the ball. There are lots more activities like this, included in the downloadable resource, to help you plan some listening activities at home. But before we go, I've got one really fun listening activity for you to play. It's called Ready, Steady, Blow. We need our two plastic cups, our two straws, and our two balls. These could be screwed up paper balls. Either you and your adult starts the game off by saying, "ready, steady, blow." Then you both use your straws, to blow the ball into your goal. The cup. The first person to get their ball into the goal wins. Remember we need to use, our eyes, and ears for listening so that we know when to stop. repeat the activity as many times as you like, but don't forget to take turns to be the person who says, "ready, steady, blow." When you finish playing the game, come back to the lesson and we'll finish up. So, as I said, don't forget to continue to use the downloadable resource to help you plan more listening activities at home. Adults, there are resources in this pack to help you record and reflect on the progress, that the child is making.
