﻿- Hello, my name's Miss Makoochi and I'm introducing the art and design lesson on Identity: Who I am. For this particular lesson, we're going to look at two artists, the American artist, Jasper Johns, and the Cuban artist Wilfredo Prieto. First of all, you'll need some resources for this lesson. You'll need a fine liner pen in black or a black biro. You'll then need some felt-tip pens or coloured pencils, and finally, a piece of A4 paper, a pencil, and a pair of scissors. So just pause the video until you get your resources and then resume once you're finished. Okay, hopefully you would have started with the intro quiz so that you can review on their previous learning. We are then going to look at two pieces of artwork from one from each of the artists and we'll review their work. So we'll find some information about those artists and then we'll find out what their work is about. And then we'll look at how this work can inspire your own piece of artwork inspired by both of the artists. And then hopefully, you'll end with the exit quiz. So to start with, I just want to go over one of the keywords that we'll be using, and that is the national identity. So national identity is just another way of talking about a particular culture or the identity of a particular country. So we'll start off by doing a quick reflection task. We look at the work of Jasper Johns. So the piece of work that you see on the screen was made by Jasper Johns, and that's the American flag. And for this work, he had two different kinds of mediums. So he had, first of all, a collage and the collage were the collage newspapers. So you can just about see from the white stripes there, underneath the paint, he had lots of newspapers as a different texture and those newspapers included a lot of text as well. And the paint is the red stripes and the blue box with the white stars as well. Why do you think that he used different types of mediums? Why do you think that he's done that? So if you just pause the video, whilst you think of that, and then resume once you're finished. So the case could be, he used different mediums perhaps to reflect the different cultures that were in America at that time, because there wasn't only American people, there were Cuban people, there were people from over the world. So perhaps he was kind of referring to the fact that the identities came from different people. So we'll now have a look at the work of Wilfredo Prieto, and he created an installation where he got flags from all over the world. And these flags, even though they had lots of different designs and lots of colours, he removed all of the colour and then he had just black and white. Why do you think that he might have done that? What do you think that he was trying to say in this installation, by removing all of the colour? So just pause the video for a moment while you reflect on that and then resume once you've completed, resume once you've finished. It could be the case that Wilfredo Prieto wanted to say that even though people are from different countries and they have different cultures, ultimately, we're all the same. So now that we've had a look at both of the artists, we're going to create a piece of work inspired by both of their works. So the first task that we're going to do, we're going to make a mini-concertina book. Now we're going to make this just by using a piece of A4 paper and a pair of scissors. And we're going to make a tiny little book that folds out into a concertina, just like the image that you can see on this slide. So I have a demonstration where I've made one of these books, so just watch the demonstration. Okay, so here's my A4 piece of paper, and this is how to make a mini-sketchbook. First, I'm going to fold the paper length-ways, trying to make sure that the corners meet. And then, I'm just going to press to make a crease along the line here, press that all along with the finger, then I'm going to fold it over this way again, trying to make sure that the corners meet and then folding it over, creasing here. Then I'm going to turn it 'round and I'm going to again, try and make sure that the corners meet and then press down so that I can get that crease. And then I'm going to turn it over. And then I'm going to again, try and make sure that the corners meet as much as you can. And then I'm going to fold and press firmly. so I get that, we're nearly there, it's starting to be a concertina book, and then I'm going to open it out again, I'm going to fold it in half this way, and then I'm just going to take the scissors, so the open-end is that side, and I'm going to cut along the folded end. And I'm just going to cut from the edge here right until the first section. Just one cut, always be careful when you're using the scissors and then that's it. And then I'm going to refold it over again, open it up, try and make sure that the edges meet and then press down firmly each side, and then that's it. And then you can just go over the edges, just folding them and folding them back. And that's it, you have your concertina book. So your completed book should look like this. It's a very small book and it will open out and you should have eight sections. So potentially, you could add eight items to that small book. So this is my concertina book, and now I have added some designs. So these two pages have the flags from two of the different countries on my list. So the first one is the Jamaican flag, that's where my parents were born. And then this is a typical food from Jamaica, which is chicken with rice and peas. This is the chicken here, bit of lime, and then the rice. And then this is the Italian flag. I visit Italy quite a lot. I've got family and friends there, and then I've drawn a huge plate of spaghetti, very popular food in Italy. If I turn the mini-concertina book over, I've drawn a few more examples of the typical foods that I see in the countries. So here, I've got two of the fruits from Italy. So I've got the figs there, I've just done a little drawing of the figs and I've just drawn drawings of oranges. You get really great oranges in Italy. I've just used felt-tip and fine liner. I drew very lightly in pencil first, and then I added colour with the felt-tips. And then I've just gone over those lines, using the fine liner. And then these are two fruits found in Jamaica. So this is what you call starfruit. It looks like this. And then when you cut into it, this fruit is in a star shape, hence its name, and then I've got mango. And then what I can do, remember the book folds like this, and I can just make a lookbook. I can start with any page that I want. Any page can be the front cover of your book and that's your concertina book. So I've now added lots of images to the book. You can see from the demonstration earlier that either you can add on one side, I've added flags from different countries and then a symbol to reflect that I've chosen food as my symbol. And then I've just drawn the flag from the country and the symbol to reflect that. So now what you're going to do, you're going to add some of the symbols to your book, and then you can pause the video whilst you do that. And then you can resume once you're finished. So now you've added your symbols. And in my particular case, I've added a lot of fruit from the different countries, along with my flags, and I'm going to do a short review. So what went well? So I think that I've added lots of different colours, lots of really bright colours. On one side, I added the flags and then I added the national foods from that country or foods that are usually associated with those particular countries. And then on the second side, I added lots of fruits from those countries. And I liked that because there were lots of different colours and it was interesting and exciting to look at. Even better if, what do I think that I could improve on? I think that because I've already drawn the flags, I think that perhaps I could have added more images instead of the flags, but overall, I'm really pleased with what I've done.
