﻿- Hello, my name is Ms. Minkuchi and I'm introducing this art and design lesson on identity, who I am, and we're going to be exploring national identity. We're going to do this by looking at the work of two artists. One of them is the American artist, Jasper Johns, and the second is a Cuban artist Wilfredo Prieto. You'll need some equipment for this lesson, you'll need a selection of magazines or leaflets. You'll need some felt tips or colouring pencils and an A4 sketchbook or an A4 piece of paper and a pencil. So just stop the video and then resume once you have your resources. So hopefully you would have done the intro quiz to find out a little bit of information and some fun facts about the lesson and the artists. Next we're going to be looking at national identity. What does it mean? We're going to explore the artist, find out some information about them. Then we're going to create a piece of artwork inspired by both of the artists, and then hopefully you can end with the exit quiz. So we look at keywords linked to this lesson. The first is national identity, which is a shared identity that comes from the culture of a particular country. Culture. Culture is the ideas, the customs or the social behaviour of a particular people or society. How do we explore national identity? Every country in the world has its own language and culture. Every country reflects their culture by its different in terms of dress, food, religion, and culture. We define our identity based on some of the above. Although there are differences between countries, there are also similarities. So we look at the first artist Jasper Johns. So as I said, Jasper Johns was an American artist. He created a painting depicting the American flag, which is the one that you can see here. He made this work by combining wooden panels, paint and wax. And you can see that the painting also has newspaper collaged underneath. You can just see in the white stripes, you can see a little bit of collaged newspaper, which has some dates on. So you can see a little bit of text just seen. And then we're gonna look at Wilfredo Prieto. So he created an exhibition which features flags from around the world. However, all the flags are in black and white so all the colour has been removed from all of the flags. And this emphasises the sameness, which we all share as global citizens and takes the focus off the national differences. Questions to reflect on your national identity, which country do you have links with? Which foods do you eat which might have their origins in other countries? Do you speak more than one language? Which language do you dream in? Today social media can seem like a virtual world where people join together in groups and form different communities. Do you belong to a different community within social media? And what drew you to this community? What do you like best about the country that you live in? Do you take holidays or visit friends or relatives in other countries? What do you like best about those countries? What do you like best about the country that you're living in at the moment? So for the first task, I'd like you to answer those questions. So you can think about answering them in a number of ways. You can just simply list them, bullet point them, just add one word answers. So pause the video once you answer those questions and then resume once you've finished. So the next task you're going to collect images. So these images are going to be a series of images based on one or all of the countries that you've listed from the questions. These could be photographs that you have on your phone that you've taken in the different countries, or they could be photographs that you have around the home, which depict these countries. Maybe you have landscapes that your family's taken on a family holiday. So you can use any of those photographs. I'm going to show you an example of the photographs that I've taken. So these were photographs that I'd taken in Italy, various places within Italy, the Italian countryside, which is lush and green, as you can see, beautiful architecture just seen in the background. I also have an image of the Italian coast, which is I love to be by water. So this is a coast where boats are moored and again, really beautiful architecture. And you can just see in the background of the image in the centre, that there are mountains there. And then the last one was taken in Sardinia. Again by the water with boats and really beautiful architecture. It's a really peaceful place. So what you need to do is just collect those images, stop the video and then resume once you have those. So now we're going to start the flag design, what you're going to do. You're going to use the photos that you have, either the family photos or the photos that you have in your phone, or found images, images that you found in magazines or in journals or any leaflets that you have around the home. So what you can do, you can start by drawing the image in its simplest form. So you go to look at the image and you're going to draw the different elements just as a series of lines and shapes. So I'm going to show you an example, the photograph that I have taken, one of the photographs from Italy, and then the drawing that I did of that, it's quite abstract, which means it's not that realistic instead of the boats, I've just drawn. I've kept them white and I've just drawn them as a series of white triangles. Where there's land. So where the path is where you walk and where the houses are I've kept those red. And I just made those quite simple shapes, triangles and different shapes. And then I've kept the blue for the water. So I've already created two flag designs, and now I'm going to create my third one. So all these designs are based on the photographs that I've taken whilst in Italy. And I've just drawn, I've just divided this particular map into three sections. And now I'm going to just draw some more detail and then add colour. So I'm going to keep the design quite simple because I said my previous ones, maybe they could be simplified a little bit more. So I've started by just drawing, I divided up the design into three sections. In the first section, I have just some squares, rectangles that signify the buildings. And then the third bit here is the boat. So I've just got a shape of the boat. And then here, that area will be the water. So now I'm just going to kind of draw the design a little bit more. I'm just going to go over it so they can see it clearly. And then I'm simply going to add colour. I'm going to use felt tip colour to do that. So the three sections and now I'm going to choose the colour. I think I'll choose red for the buildings here. I'm just gonna mark the sections just so that I know where the colour is. The simpler, I think the simpler design is the better it looks because then there's not that much detail. So I'm just going to quickly add colour. Felt tips are nice and quick to add colour because you don't have to wait for them to dry like paint and the colour is added quite easily. So it's a lot quicker and a lot more, the color's a lot more vibrant than colouring pencils. But if you have colour in pencils, that's fine too. You might just need to add a few coats. So the design, all of the shapes are taken from the elements that are in the photograph. So here in the first section, there are lots of buildings, houses, flats, and I've kind of just grouped them together. And then I'm just going to have chosen red. I just want a very limited colour scheme. So I'm just going to have three or four colours. So that's the buildings, see with felt tips, it's nice and quick. And then I'm going to add some blue to the centre section, this where the water will be. I'm just going to keep it nice and simple, colouring quite quick with the felted pen. So just add in a block colour there. And the good thing about using fell tips is that you can colour quite a large area quite quickly. And it's quite, it's nice and smooth and doesn't leave any gaps. You can use colouring pencils, but as I said, you might need to add a few coats so that there won't be any white areas so that there won't be any gaps. So that's the water, that's the blue. It's just very, very simple. There we go. So that's the water. And then I'm going to add yellow Yeah, there's a kind of, this is for the boat, but it won't look like a boat, at the moment it's just going to look like a shape, which I'm going to add to this colour is like a dusty yellow. We can still see the pencil underneath, which is fine because I'm going to go over that with black felt tip pen or black fine liner. So I'm just going to fill, make it a block colour, try and shade in one sort of direction so that you don't get lots of marks. So I'm just going to, it doesn't matter if you go over the edges a little bit. So that's the yellow, just going to add a little bit more so that I don't get any white spaces. Here we go. Just that added in. I'll probably add a little another coat, the best sort of felt tips for this, the Sharpies because the Sharpies, they have a real block colour, and then, the boat, this boat is on the land. So I'm going to add another colour, which is the green. I'm just gonna mark exactly where it is. If you want, you could use a ruler here to make sure that you get the straight edge. Or you can use something with a straight edge. I'm going to use this photograph that I've got handy. And then I'll put a line down here and I'll put a line here and then I'll just keep adding the colour until this all filled in. I might add a line around this shape. Here we go. So now I'm just going to fill in the colour here in the background. It's almost like using paint, using felt tips because the colour just glides on so easily. And it was quite quick. That's what I was able to do three designs. So I'm just gonna fill this colour here. So as I said, try and colour in one direction so that you don't get any streaks or marks, just going to use my finger here as a guide. And because I've already gone over here with a line, it won't allow me to go over the edge. So everything now has been coloured in the same direction, just going to fill this area in, move this line down so that it's even. Trying to fill any gaps as I go and just glide a felt tip pen across. And just fill in the area. It's better to start at the top. And then you won't get any marks from your hands or your fingers. Just going to go over that line again so that I don't go over here. And I'm just going to fill in the area trying to go in the right direction all the time like this. So I don't want to make marks that go up and down or across. It's always in the same direction. So we're just going to fill up this last corner here. I'll put in another line here and then just keep going the same direction from left to right. And then I'm going to leave the white areas and then I'm going to get my Sharpie. And then I'm just going to go over the lines again. I'm gonna start from left to right here. So I'm going to start left here and then I'm gonna go over the lines with the black, can use a black felt tip. Here I'm using a fine liner, either will work. So I'm just going to go over the lines to make them more defined. See here, I've gone over, made a mark, but that's fine. And then I think I will add a line here so that I can divide the buildings and then it also makes the edges nice and straight as well. And then I'll put that across. I put an outline on the shape, the flag itself, quite a thick line. And then I put a line down here again, just to kind of neaten at the edge and to outline the edge, outline the edge here as thick as you can there. And then we're going to outline this one a little bit more to make it more defined, to make the line quite heavy. And then each area I'll just add a thick thickish line, just so that we can see the outline, outline each area and then this will divide the colours too, so that you'd be able to see the colours. What colours should pop out here. And then I'm going to, with the lighter colour you can put the line slightly underneath. Oh, went over the edge there, it's fine, you can just outline a little more. So all I've done is instead of drawing everything in the image, I've just drawn the basic shape so that I can kind of make it look a little bit abstract, make it look a little bit different. So we know that this started off as a boat, and then I'm going to draw some lines here where the boat was, and then I'm going to put another one there. And I think I go over these lines a little bit more so that there's not any white spaces. It's better to do this before you do the black fine liner so you don't get any marks like this, but that's fine. And then continue. You could use paint for this as well. You could use watercolour paint if you have them or acrylic paint, it will take you a little bit longer because you'd have to leave it to dry but that's fine. Paint looks really lovely too. And that's it, that's my design. So now I've got three designs and these all started off as photographs. And I just used the basic shapes from the photograph to create these designs. So these images are representations of the places that I've mentioned within my initial list. I've used the photographs as a starting point to create the design. So you need to think about the materials that you would like to use. I use felt tips, you can use felt tips, you can use colouring pencils, or you can use paint, water colour or acrylic, whatever you have to hand. So I've just finished my design and I've just done a brief evaluation of what I thought went well and even better if. So, what went well? It's a very simple design with detail, shapes and colour, even better if, I think the design could be even more simplified. So if I made it really simple and just kept the shapes to a basic shape, it would have been more abstract. And I think that it would have improved the design, but overall I'm quite happy. And the most important thing that I had fun with it. So in the next lesson, we'll be completing this task and we'll be adding drawings and we've been making a little concertina book.
