﻿This is Year 5, Unit 2, Creating Media, Video Editing. It is lesson 5 of 6. Importing and editing video. For this lesson, you will need to have a video recording device. If you are going to be using an internet connected device to access websites, please make sure you do so with supervision from a parent or guardian. Hello everyone, my name is Jane Adamson, and I am your computing teacher for this unit. I'm looking forward to teaching this lesson. To prepare, you will need something to write with, something to write on and a video recording device. It would also be beneficial if you have access to an internet connected device. Please do take a moment before you start to clear away any distractions, including turning off any notifications on apps so you can focus. Try to find a quiet comfortable space where you can work without disruption during this lesson. Pause the video if you need to, at any point during this lesson. In this lesson, you will identify video that can be improved through reshooting and editing, store, retrieve and export your recording to a computer, explain how to improve a video by reshooting and editing, select the correct tools to make edits to your video. Key vocabulary that we will be covering is, export, computer, iMovie, split, trim, clips, edit, titles and credits, timeline, transitions, audio, soundtrack, content, retake, reshoot. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is important to watch your recordings to ensure that you're happy with it. I'm going to tell you my view on this one. I think it's always important to watch your recordings to check if any footage needs to be reshot. It could be that you've got something in the background that shouldn't be there, it could be that somebody has not said the right words, but it's all about checking, check, check, check and check again. It's much more difficult to go back and reshoot once you finished all your filming. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? An effective video must always have a title and credits. Think about all the different films and movies and videos that you've seen over the years. What do you think? What's your opinion? Task one, complete your content. You're going to go to the worksheet for task one and collect all of the equipment that you will need. You will need your completed storyboard for this task. You're going to record all of your content ready to edit your video. Resume once you've finished collecting your recordings and all the other things that you need. A suggested time for this activity is between 20 and 30 minutes. So pause the video now, go to your task one and complete your content. How did you get on? Task one, reviewing your content. So have you completed the sequences in your storyboard? Have you checked it against your storyboard? This is something you need to check, check again and then do a final check. Have you used the camera angles that you listed on your storyboard? And finally, are you happy with the content? Next steps with video. Here are some instructions for placing your videos in a folder or album. Take some time and watch the video. Importing video. For this demonstration, we're going to use a handheld tablet and it works in a similar way to a smartphone. So if you've recorded video on a video camera, then you'll probably edit it on a laptop, but you will need to check how to download your content to your device. You can often do this by plugging it in with a cable and downloading it directly or by using WiFi or Bluetooth. Or if you have a Mac, you could use Airdrop. Most tablets, editing software works in similar ways. You put the footage in a folder or an album, you open up the app, and then you assemble your clips in a timeline, which has video and audio. You then edit eclipse together, to create a polished movie. Let's start our demonstration, using our tablet device. The video is usually stored in the Photos app, which you can look at as soon as you have finished your recording. Here is the Photos app, so I'm looking on the bottom bar, and it's a picture, it looks like a colourful flower with a white background. So I'm clicking on that now, and I can see inside my Photos app now. Now we're on albums if we look along the bottom, 'cause that's highlighted in blue, I can also go to photos and go through my photos. I'm going to click back on albums button on the bottom here. And I'm going to click on the arrow on the top left where it says albums, and we go back to albums. Now you can see in the top left hand corner, there is a plus sign. If I click on this plus sign here, I'm going to create a new album or a new folder to put my footage in. So new album, I'm going to label it Handwashing. You need to label yours with whatever your video is called. Once you've finished labelling it, save, and straight away your devices, well which videos do you want to put in, so I need to go through and press them, select them with my finger, on my mouse if I'm on a laptop, and select all the videos I want to use, and I can scroll through and have a look and see if there's some more here. These are all the videos I want to include. Once I'm finished, I press Done. And you can see here if we go 1234 along the top from the left, click on it and in my folder, I have all my videos in a nice neat place ready to edit using my video editing software. Now it might happen that you've missed a video that you need to include. So if I go to Select on the top right hand side and add, it brings up my images and videos again and I can scroll through and select any more that I want to add, and when I'm finished, I click Done which is in the top right hand corner of this window. And you can see it then adds it to my folder or album ready for me to edit when I get into my editing software. Let's go through the checklist. Have you labelled the album or folder? Have the videos been put inside the album or folder? Have you watched your videos? Are you happy with them? I hope so. All that planning pays off. Importing video and saving. Follow the instructions for importing your videos to the editing software. Play the video which will explain exactly how to do this. Importing video. In this video, we will look at how to import video to the editing app. On this tablet device, I'm going to use iMovie. So I'm going to click on the purple icon with the white star in the middle. I am going to create a new movie by clicking on the plus in the top left hand corner. I am given two choices. Do I want to create a movie or a trailer, I'm going to select movie, and this is the choice that you will make most of the time. On the left hand side, I can see I have some choices. I'm going to select albums, as I've already created an album called Handwashing for my video. So I'm going to click on albums, and then scroll down until I find my Handwashing album. If I click on it, then I can see all of the content that I've already created in my album. And what I need to do now is select all the videos or the images that I want to use. So if I just go through and select some like so, once I've done that and I'm happy with it, all I do is go to the bottom and it says Create movie in blue. I'm going to click on that now. And it has created my movie. So here we are with our movie. And I'm scrolling through the timeline with my finger, and I can see that I've got it ready for me to start some editing. Once I'm happy and a thing that we need to remember, is we're going to press that Done, and we need to give our movie a title. So if I click on my movie 19 and label it as Handwashing, then it's much easier for me to be able to locate that rather than if it's called my movie 20. So if I click on the back button for projects, I can see that I have my handwashing movie, which is the latest one, beside the plus. And I can go back in. And if I want to edit it now, which I will be doing, I just need to click Edit, and the timeline comes up like so, and we can start thinking about putting our final movie together. Go through the checklist, you should open the editing app that you're going to use, locate your files, import them into the editing software, look at them in the timeline and make sure you have saved your project. Pause the video and check that you have done all of these things against this list. Resume the video once you have completed the checklist. Task two, import and upload your content. So go to the worksheet for task two, and check that you've already done the things that have been included in the video. So you've imported or uploaded your content into the application that you're using. If you're happy and have already completed this, then resume the video for the next part of the lesson. If not, pause, take your time, make sure that you've got to the right point before you continue. Resume when you're ready. Task two, reviewing your imported uploaded content. So follow the instructions when reviewing in your imports or uploads. Has all the content loaded that you expect it to load? Have you cross checked your imports against the storyboard? Are you happy with the import or uploads, make sure that you've checked the answers to all of these questions. Editing and deleting. We are going to watch the video clip which is going to explain how to delete, trim, split, undo and reorder your clips. Here's the video on how to do this. So here we have our video, which we're going to edit in some more detail now. So what we're going to have a look at, is how to trim a video clip. So I've got a video clip here that's quite long. So if I highlight it by pressing on it, and where you see the dark yellow area on the left hand side if I carefully press, okay I have to be careful here and drag it in, you can see how you can trim your video clip. What I'm going to do is undo that. And if you want to undo any of the actions that you've done, in your video editing package, it's usually a curved arrow that curves to the left. So it's down here on the right hand side about two thirds of the way down, we can undo it. And that undoes the work that we've just done. So that's how to trim and how to undo. Now we might have a large piece of video or a video clip here that we need to split. So what I'm going to do, is actually find a good piece of video for that, that's a bit too long, and I'm going to stop it at this point here. So I'm going to click on it to select it, it got a yellow bounding box around the edge. And you can see some options that have come up at the bottom of the screen. So you can split, detach audio or duplicate. I'm going to split, and you can see now is split that clip into two smaller clips. So that's how you trim a video, you highlight it, you pull the ends in. If you want to split it into two smaller videos and then trim it, that's how to do that, you actually highlight the clip, and then split. And if you want to undo anything 'cause you've made an error, then there's always a curved arrow to the left hand side that you go to, to undo your last actions. Task three, editing your video. Go to the worksheet for task three and remove any unwanted content from your video by splitting, trimming, reordering your video clips. Remember, that you've watched some videos on how to do this. Resume the video once you've completed the steps. Previewing your editing. This is your checklist to go through to make sure that you've made some good progress in editing your video. Have you removed all the unwanted content? Have you checked the video that made sure it's in line with the sequence of events on your storyboard? And are you happy with the editing? Importing and Editing Video
