﻿Hello, my name is Simon. And I'm going to be your teacher today. Today, we're going to be learning all about shapes. So this is lesson three of your unit on shape and sorting. What are we going to learn today? We're going to learn to recognise and name 2D shapes. We're going to recognise the properties of shapes and the vocabulary that's associated with that. And we're going to recognise shapes within a repeating pattern. So here is some of the key vocabulary we're going to use today. We're going to be using our number words, one, two, three and so on. Circle, square, rectangle and triangle. We're also going to be talking about the properties. Such as the amount of corners, the amount of sides, straight and curved. For this lesson, you will need some shapes. You could cut them out from the resources, or you could cut some shapes from paper or card. Some paper and some pens, and a bag. Pause the video while you fetch these things now, and then unpause when you're ready to start. Here is the structure of the lesson. We've said welcome and hello and you've got your resources. Next, we're going to model and you're going to do some adult-led activities. And then there'll be an independent activity where a parent or carer will ask you some questions. Let's talk about some shapes. This is a circle, a circle. How do we know? Well, it has one curved side. There it is in red. It has zero straight sides and it has zero corners. This is a square. How do we know? It has four straight sides. Let's count them. Look at the square and let's count them together. One, two, three, four. There all straight sides and the sides are all the same length. And it has four corners, let's count those. One, two, three, four, four corners. This is a rectangle, a rectangle. How do we know? Well, it has four sides. One, two, three, four. And they're all straight sides. It has four corners. One, two, three, four. And it's different from a square because it has two long sides and two short sides. These are the long sides, and these are the short sides. This is a triangle, triangle. How do we know? It has three sides, and they're all straight sides. Let's count them together. One, two, three. It also has three corners. Let's count these. One, two, three. Here is a pattern of repeating shapes, but I need to find all of the triangles. Pause the video and help me find all of the triangles. Did you find them? Let's have a look. There's one and another, and there's the third one. But how do we know these are triangles? Well, we know that triangles have three sides and they're all straight sides, and they have three corners. Here's another pattern of shapes. Firstly, can you name these shapes? Pause the video while you name these shapes. Now I can see a circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle, circle. What do you think comes next? Pause the video while you draw on a piece of paper what you think comes next. Let's see if you are right So the sequence went, circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle, circle, rectangle. Well done if you drew a rectangle. How do we know how to draw a rectangle? Well I wonder, did you draw four sides? And did you draw all straight sides? It has four corners. And because it's a rectangle, it has two short and two long sides. It's important to remember that sometimes shapes can look different. Let me show you an example. This is a rectangle. It has four sides and four corners. All the sides are straight. And two of the sides are long and two are short. This is also a rectangle. Its properties stay the same. Here's another one and another. These are all rectangles. Let's have a look at a triangle. A triangle we know has three straight sides and three corners. The properties stay the same, but the triangle might look a bit different. These are all triangles. I've cut out some shapes from coloured paper. I've got a square, a circle, a triangle and a rectangle. But can I find a shape if I know its properties? So I'm looking for a shape that has four sides and they're all straight sides and all of the sides are the same size. Well, I think I found it. It's this one. It has four sides, one, two, three, four. And it has four corners, one, two, three, four. And all the sides are straight and all the same size. Let's try another one. I'm looking for a shape that has three sides, they're all straight sides and it has three corners. Can you help me find it? Pause the video and point to the shape that matches those things. Have you found it? Well, I've spotted two because I think the shape I need is a triangle. There's one and here's another one. And I know I've got it right because it has three sides, three corners, and all the sides are straight. One more. I'm looking for a shape with a curved side and no corners. Pause the video and point to the shape I'm looking for. Right, well, I think the shape I'm looking for is this one, it must be. But hang on a minute, It has straight sides. And I was looking for a shape that had curved sides. Maybe I need another clue, or the shape I'm looking for has got one curved side. Let's see, I think it's this one. It's a circle, did I get it right? Yay, now it's your turn to have a go at finding the shape. A parent or carer will tell you the name of a shape. Can you find it from your shapes? You could then try and answer these questions. How many sides has it got? And how many corners has it got? Has it got a curved side? Has it got a straight side? And are all the sides the same length? Pause the video now while you complete this task and then unpause when you're ready to carry on. Now that as you can see, I've got a bag here and my parent or carer has put a shape in this bag but I haven't seen it. And I'm going to feel inside the bag and see if I can tell what shape it is by feeling the properties of that shape. So I'll feel how many sides it's got, and I will feel how many corners and count those, and then I'm going to try and draw it on my paper. Let's have a go. So I can feel a straight side and a corner and another straight side and another corner and another straight side. So it has one, two, three sides. And it has one, two, three corners. So that must mean it is a triangle. I've got another shape in here. But remember, I haven't seen it. So let's feel but not look. Okay, so this time I'm going to name the properties. So I think that I can feel that it has four straight sides. I feel four straight sides. Let's feel how many corners it's got. One, two, three, four. It has four corners. But it could be a square or it could be a rectangle. So I'm going to feel to see whether two of the sides are longer and two of the sides are shorter. Yes, they are. What shape have I got in the bag? Well, it's got four straight sides, four corners and two of the sides are longer. Let's try drawing it. Two long sides and two short sides, four corners. It must be a rectangle, well done. Now it's your turn. So ask a parent or carer to hide a shape inside a bag. Don't look at it. Feel the shape inside the bag and draw the shape you can feel. You could name the shape you've drawn and compare it to the shape in the bag. You're allowed to look at it then. For some variety, you could describe the shape you can feel for someone else to draw. Or you could listen to someone else describe what they can feel, and you could draw what they say. Pause the video now to have a go at the task and good luck. Welcome back, how did you do? I've got one for you now. So in the bag I've got a shape that has four straight sides and they are all the same length and it has four corners. What do you think that shape is? Shout it out now. I'm going to hold it up, were you right? It is a square, well done. So in unit two, lesson three, we've learned to identify shapes and their properties. If you want to make this a bit easier, you could use cut-out shapes and group them matching all the same shapes together, or you could respond to the shape names. To make it harder, add more shapes such as a semicircle, oval, pentagon or hexagon. You could also create your own repeating patterns. For other ideas, look for items of various shapes around your home. For example, can you find square items? Or what shape is the cushion? And you could create repeating patterns using both shapes and objects. So let's recap some of the language we've used today. We've used number names like one, two, three and four. We've used the names of shapes like circle, square, rectangle and triangle. And we've also talked about the properties of shapes. So we've talked about whether a shape has a straight side, or whether it has a curved side. And we've talked about the number of corners.
