﻿Hi, my name is Jordan Bickel, and this is lesson two of six in Web Page Creation. In this lesson, you're going to be designing a paper version of your very first web page. All you're going to need is a pen or pencil and a piece of paper, you may want to add some colours to your design at the very end. So now I need you to find a quiet place with no distractions where you could do your best work. Pause the video right now and get comfortable. And when you're ready to move on press play. In this lesson, you will plan the features of a web page. First, we're going to recognise the common features of a web page. And then we'll suggest different types of media to include on that webpage. And finally, you're going to draw a web page layout to suit a specific purpose. Every great website has a very clear purpose. Websites are always created for a purpose. People have lots of different reasons for creating websites. They might create a website to entertain somebody, or they might be creating it to inform someone of something. They might also create a website to persuade somebody to follow a specific cause. When you make your website, you need to think about who it is for? That's your audience, and why you're creating the website. That's going to be your purpose. Let's have a look at a few example of websites where we can identify the purpose and the audience. Have a look at the example below all about dogs. Think about why has the webpage been made? Who is the audience and then think about how you might know that. Go ahead and pause the video here to have a think. Press play when you're ready to continue. So, this website, let's first look at why the website might have been made. So, the title of the top in the header is very clear, all about dogs. So the purpose of this website is to inform somebody about dogs. Now we can think about who the audience might be. I could say the audience would possibly be somebody who's interested in learning more about dogs, we could even get as specific as thinking , it's probably for children. If you look at the image provided on the website, it's a cartoon character, a very cute dog, something that will grab the attention of someone who's a bit younger, and also the content that's there in the text, it's quite simple, straightforward, very appropriate for a child. Take a look at the second example. See if you can identify the purpose and the audience. Pause the video here to have a think and play when you're ready to continue. So in this website, you can see at the very top the header says, our uniform, so I think the purpose of this website would be to inform somebody on the appropriate uniform to wear to school. And then the audience this time it changes, it's not made for the children. If you look here it says your children should wear. So the audience would be parents of children at St. Bernard School. And here we have our final example, look at the website below and see if you can identify the purpose and the audience for it, pause the video here to have a think and press play when you're ready to move on. So, in this example, here, you can see the header is called New Stock Available Now. So, the purpose of this webpage is actually to persuade the person reading it to purchase something. And so the audience is most likely going to be somebody who is interested in gaming, so that might be a teenager or young adult. Now it's your turn to start thinking about what the purpose and who the audience will be for the website that you're creating. For the remainder of our lessons, I'm going to be using an example all about animals. If you'd like to use the same idea as me, that's perfectly fine. Otherwise, you could come up with your own website idea. And think about the purpose of it and who it's going to be for. So right now, I'd like you to pause the video and think about what is the purpose of your webpage? And who is your audience going to be? Go ahead and have a think about that and press play when you're ready to continue. Great work. you should have a good idea now what the purpose of your website is, and who your intended audiences. Now we're going to have a look at some of the features of a web page using Google Sites. When you're planning your web page, you need to understand some of the capabilities of the software, we need to know what are other tools that we have available. We're going to look at some of the tools available in Google Sites. Some of the things that I'm about to show you are where you can put your site name, your logo, the header, some of the media features such as text and images, and then we'll look at different layouts on how you can format your webpage. Now it's your turn to design your very own webpage. When you're designing your webpage, you have two options. You can either choose to design your web page on a blank piece of paper, or you can use the template we've provided in the worksheets. If you decide to use a blank piece of paper, we still provided a resource that looks like this here, that will give you an idea and a reminder of some of the things you'd want to include, for example, at the top, starting with your site name, and including the logo. And then we've put the four different banners that you could choose from, and then a reminder here of the different layouts that Google sites offer. If you're not someone to work usually from a blank page, that's completely fine. We've also provided a template here that you could just fill in with your own ideas. Let's take a closer look at some of the features Google Sites has to offer. Two of the most important features you'll want to include in your web page design is a site name and a logo. Here you can see I've got a spot where I can add my site name. As I said, for my example, I'm going to be creating a website all about animals. So the name I came up with from my website is Animals Unleashed, a bit of wordplay there for you. And then by clicking here, I'm able to add my logo. When we're adding our logos, we'll have to be careful to follow copyright rules. But don't worry about that right now. We'll learn more about it in one of our future lessons. When you're designing your webpage today, you can go ahead and just draw an image of what you'd like it to look like. Pause the video here so you can begin designing your webpage. You can either use a blank piece of paper, or the template that we provided in the worksheets. You're going to start by designing your site name and creating your site's logo. Press play when you're ready to continue and we'll look at the next features that you include in your web page design. Once you come up with a site name and logo, you want to look at your header, it's very important to think carefully what you want this to look like. It's one of the first things visitors will see when visiting your page. I'm going to add a nice welcome message here. Welcome to Animals Unleashed. And once I've typed in what I want the header to say, I can choose what I want it to look like. So here if I click on header type, you'll see there's four different options. Could be a large image to take up more space, or a large banner across the top. You can make it slightly smaller or choose just to have the title only. It's completely up to you what you would like your header to look like. You may also choose to include an image in the background of your header. If you'd like to do so, you can do that by clicking change image here and choosing an image to have as a background you want to make sure that it's not too busy because then it will take away from the text that you've chosen to have there. So that's something to consider when you're designing your webpage. Pause the video here and add to your design your header, you need to decide what you want it to say and what you'd like it to look like. When you're ready to continue press play. As you can see, I decided to put an image in my background. Google actually has a very cool feature here where you can click and it will improve the readability. So that was the picture when I first dropped it in. And now if I click it again, you'll see it'll automatically adjust the picture to make it easier to read the text. I've also decided to make this text bold by highlighting and clicking bold. Now that we've decided what we want our header to look like, we can look to the main body of the page. If I look on the right hand side here, you'll see that I have a number of layout options. Google Sites has six different options for layout. So, when I find the one that I would like to use, I'm going to click it and drag it into the section just underneath my header here. And now you can see I have a spot where I have an option to add more pictures. Here I can add more text. So again, I might say, Welcome to Our Website. And then here I might add a bit more information. We hope you enjoy learning more about animals. So, this is just one of the sections that I can choose here. But you can always go back to layouts and continue to add underneath that. So if I'd like to add maybe three more images, I'll drag that over here. And this blue line that comes across the screen is indicating where that layout is going to be put. If I bring it up here, the blue line will go to the top saying that it will be above the layout I just added. But I want this to be below so I can continue to add information. And now I have three more spots, I can add an image. And here I could put a bit more text information. So I might have a section that says animals A to Z. Here I might add a section about their habitats. And then I might want to add a section of FAQ section stands for frequently asked questions and then I can go back and add images. If you add something that you're not quite happy with, you can always go to the left hand side here and use the bin to delete that section. Pause the video here to finish your webpage design by adding one or two different layouts to your webpage design. Press play when you're ready to continue.
