﻿Hello and welcome back to my virtual classroom. My name is Mr Chiles, and I'll take you for our next lesson which is lesson nine on our unit on the issues of urbanisation. In today's lesson, we're going to explore the key question of how can we manage the housing crisis and we're going to explore the general housing crisis across the UK but also we're going to explore and focus on Manchester. So before we start, we need to make sure that as always we've got something to write with, so a pen, pencil, and some paper to write on so you can complete the tasks for today's lessons and find an area where it's nice and quiet so you can focus and really explore this key question of how can we manage a housing crisis. So if you're not ready, pause the video now, and then when you ready to start the lesson, restart the video. Excellent, right? Let's make a start, so how can we manage the housing crisis? So we need to explore this idea of what do we mean by the housing crisis? Well, there's some quite staggering statistics out there at the minute and seize some of those statistics are 8.4 million people in England were living in unaffordable or unsuitable homes. And this is taken from data from 2019. So it's quite recent data. 3.6 million people were living in overcrowded homes, there were not enough room for them. 2.5 million people were unable to afford their rent or mortgage, and a really staggering and worrying statistic was that 400,000 were homeless or at risk of homeless. So it is as we say, a bit of a housing crisis. So what are the causes of the housing crisis? Well, there are freaky causes. Number one is that the population of England and the UK is ageing and that means more people are living longer and therefore more people need the houses for longer, and therefore they're not vacating those houses and we need to find alternative options for people to be able to have homes. Second key reasons, single person households. More people nowadays are single and they're not having a friendship or a relationship and that means that they are living by themselves for longer and therefore the more housing is required to meet the needs of these single person households. And then the final key reason is divorce. The rate of divorce has increased and therefore as people split, they need to find an alternative home, and therefore that increases the pressure on providing housing. So let's explore this by looking at this idea of an ageing population. So we call the population pyramid for the UK in 2016. And we can see that we got the age groups running through the middle. We have male and female populations either sides and male on the left in the dark and light blue variations of colour, and the females in the right, in the sort of red and pinkish colour. And you can see the bottom we have our scale. So we have the population in millions for each of those age groups. So I want you to have a goal of finishing those questions and completing those free questions. So what is the population of females in the five to nine age group? What is the population of males in the zero to four age group and what is the total populations we need to add together the male and female population in the 45 to 49 age group? So pause the video now, take your time, study the graph carefully if you want to use your ruler to help you identify those figures, then you're more than welcome to do so that may be helpful. And then when you're ready and you think you've got your answers, restart the video and we can review them together. Excellent, how did we get on? So we should have that it's approximately 1.9 million in the five to nine age group of females. It's 2.1 million approximately in the population of males in the zero to four age group and the total population in the 45 to 49, we should have somewhere around 4.9 million. So excellent and well done if you've got those correct. So quick knowledge check. What is missing from the sentences below? So the UK population is the number of something person households is. So I want you to now pause the video and have a go at completing those two sentences. And then when you ready and you've got your answers, restart the video and we can review them together. Excellent, let's have a look. So we should have the population is ageing. As we said, we just completed our tasks and we can see that's ageing in the population pyramid and we should have the number of single person households is one of our other key reasons is increasing. So well done again if you've got that. Excellent knowledge recall. Okay, so how is Manchester solving the housing crisis? Well, there are a number of ways and we're going to focus on a particular way that they're doing that. So the option is to use greenfield and brownfield sites. Now greenfield sites are those that haven't been built on at the countryside areas, and there's lots of open space and options to expand. Whereas option two is to build on brownfield sites. So previously used sites for industry and in particular for Manchester lots of these are empty mills from that sort of high performance time where they were producing lots of cloth from turning cotton. So we want the two places. So we're going to look at Chat Moss which is the area here which is on a greenfield sites here, and then we're going to look at Eccles which is in within the main centre. So brownfield site, one of the males within here, okay? So what I want you to do is we're going to go through each of these different stakeholders, you've got two stakeholders and I want you to identify their thoughts on the positive and negative aspects of building on the greenfield site in Chat Moss. So I'm going to read them first of all. And as I read them, I want you to pause for that stakeholder, and I want you to identify it. Then we'll go through positive and negative aspects and then we'll do the next stakeholder, and then I want you to pause again and I'll give you an indication to do so, and you can identify that positive and negative aspects of building on the greenfield site in Chat Moss. So the first one is a resident of the rural-urban fringe. So this is a resident and living near Chat Moss. My village is lovely. I've been living here all my life. My family brought a cottage here many years ago and I've been lucky enough to inherit it. The village is very close knit with everyone knowing each other. There's a fabulous community spirit! I've heard rumours about the new housing development which is very close to our village. I'm very concerned this will cause an increase in the volume of traffic, which could cause problems with daily commute to the city. On the other hand, the new houses could potentially mean more people to support our local services. I'm a little bit torn as to whether this will be a benefit for us. So pause the video now, reread this resident's view, and I want you to identify any of the positive and negative aspects of this development on the greenfield site of Chat Moss. Excellent, how did we get on? Let's hae a look. So hopefully you've identified some of these aspects. So they said that the village is lovely and it's very close knit, and there's a fabulous community spirit. So there's a worry there that if they build on this site it could have an impact on this fabulous community spirit by identified that worry about the increase in the volume of traffic and that the daily commute to the city could be longer for them. And then a positive aspect is they've said, well maybe, it might help to support the local services. So hopefully you've identified a couple of those key points, those positive aspects of what this particular resident feels about this development. Now our second stakeholder is a council member for Manchester City Council. The city needs to find new sites for building houses. In recent decades, the city's population has grown significantly which has been influenced by migration. This is creating a challenge to sufficiently house everyone. The cost of building on brownfield sites and the need to clear existing buildings and potential chemicals from previous use is delaying the process. It also means our options developing more affordable housing can be limited. The site on Chat Moss will enable us to build a large number of houses, with several allocated as part of the affordable scheme. We are aware of the concerns from the locals and were working or looking at working with them to reduce any potential issues. So again, pause the video, reread this council, City Council member's view and highlight any positive and negative aspects of building on this greenfield sites. Excellent. How do we get up? Let's have a look. So we should have that in recent decades, we should highlight that the population grows significantly. So one of the aspects of needing to build on the site is the fact that they need to house everyone, identifying a negative aspect of building on the brownfield sites in Eccles over the greenfield site is that the cost to building in the brownfield site is actually going to be potentially more expensive and it's going to delay the process of providing this housing for everyone. They said that because it's going to be more expensive on the brownfield site, in that cause, that means they're going to have to reduce the potential options for offering affordable housing. And therefore that's going to mean that younger people may struggle to get on the housing market. They said that they'll be able to build more houses, larger number of houses on Chat Moss 'cause it's a bigger space, less restrictions, and that they're aware of the concerns, and they're trying to work with those within close proximity to that new development in Chat Moss. So hopefully you've identified some of those positive and negative aspects. Okay, so our main task now is decide what the best solution is. So should city planners build on the greenfield site in Chat Moss or the brownfield site Eccles? You all need to decide which you think is the best solution for Manchester. And I want you to explain your choice. So you too you can use the right instructor of I found the best solution in Manchester would be, and this means that, or this results in, or this will lead to. So try and use some of those chain developed explanations to write your answer. So pause the video now, have a go at writing and maybe reread those accounts, and then when you're ready, restart the video and we can review it together. Excellent. How did we get home? So we should have something, hopefully that might be similar to this. So for me, I think the best solution for Manchester would be to build on the brownfield site in Eccles. This land is currently abandoned and provides a suitable land that is more accessible compared to the greenfield site in Chat Moss, 'cause then it's going to be close to the city centre, people will have a less travelling times. This means that there will be less pressure on commute and traffic leading in our Chat Moss as that resident said. Furthermore, it will protect the natural habitats and maintain the current character of the village and its surroundings. Now there's no right or wrong answer, and it will be dependent upon your view. And you may have gone down the route of actually it's okay to build it on Chat Moss. It's more about you explaining your choice and the reasons for your choice. Excellent. So that brings us to the end of today's lesson. And we have looked at and explored this idea of how can we manage the housing crisis. And we've looked at this idea of what is happening at the minute. What's the state of the housing crisis? We looked at some of the key reasons for it. So the three key reasons of the population is ageing. We've got increased single person households and we've got increased rates of divorce. And then we've looked at some of those potential different views about building on greenfield sites versus brownfield sites and looking at the example in Manchester of Chat Moss versus a brownfield site in Eccles.
