﻿Hi, everybody. My name is Mr. Palekar and welcome back to music. Now in this lesson, we are going to recap our song, Everybody Loves Saturday Night. We are going to explore some music that has four beats in every bar. We're going to explore the strong beat of every bar. And we're going to explore some music with two beats in a bar. We're also going to learn a brand new song, called Lil' Liza Jane. For this lesson, you will need some headphones, if you have some. Don't panic if you don't just make sure you are somewhere where it is quiet where you can concentrate and you can hear this video clearly. You'll need a pencil and paper, if you would like to take any notes. And you will need your hands, your bodies and your voices. Let's get started with Everybody Loves Saturday Night. When you're ready to continue click the play button. Time signatures. Four beats in a bar. Now, today we're going to explore what it looks like to have four beats in a bar. Remember in our pulse, we have our even heartbeats. Our one... All the way through a piece of music. Well, what do we mean by four beats in a bar? Let's take a look. These are our bars. And this is how we organise our music. Much like our bedrooms, or our homes, we organise our things into different places. In music, we organise our music into bars and that's what each of these boxes are, bars. We've got one bar, two bar, three, we've got four bars there. And for each of these bars, we're going to separate it by a line. And we call this line a bar line. Let's make sure that every single bar has four beats. There we go. And for these four beats, we can actually make sure that we can see that there's a number four at the start. And that number four tells us that there's going to be four beats in every single bar. Okay, so we've got four bars. We've got bar lines, which separate them. And we've got the number four at the beginning of our music, which tells us that there are four beats in every single bar. Let's see if we can add some body percussion to help us count four beats in a bar. I've got a clap on the first beat and four beats, two, three, and four, I've got a click. So it goes one, two, three, four. Try it with me just that first bar. One, two, three. Here we go. One, two, three, four. We're going to do it again, but count it out loud as well. One, two, three. Here we go. One, two, three, four. Good, but that doesn't happen one time, it happens four times because there are four bars and we are doing the same clap, click, click, click all the way through. That star is a click. Let's read it all the way through. One, two and off we go. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One two three, four. One two, three, four. Good. Now don't worry, if you are screaming at the video saying, "I don't know how to click." Don't worry, you can just pack your shoulders. So one, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Let's do it one more time. But this time we're going to count in our head. Ready? One, two and off we go. Good job. The strong beat. Now that we have four beats in every single bar, we need to know what the strong beat is. Now the strong beat is the strongest beat of the bar, and this is going to be our downbeat. And our downbeat is our first beat of every bar. Let me say that again. So our first beat of every single bar is called our downbeat. And we're going to clap or pat or click that harder than the rest of the beats. Let's take a look at what that will look like and sound like. Okay, so here are our four bars. We have our bar lines, which separate each of the bars, and we have our four beats. As you can see our downbeat, our first beat is a little bit bigger this time because we are going to clap harder on that beat. Okay? Now that we can see that we've got four beats in every single bar, we can change it so that it looks a little bit like this. We've got our four at the very start of our music, which just tells us four beats in every single bar. Let's try clapping and clicking through our music so far. But this time when we do a clap on the downbeat, we're going to clap a little bit harder so that we know that we're coming back to number one. So, one, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Now that we have our downbeat, we know that our downbeat is our first beat of every bar and that we're going to clap that a little bit harder than the rest of the beats. Let's see if we can clap to the pulse of different pieces of music. Remember to clap harder on the downbeat. I'm going to start you off with a piece that you've already heard. See if you can start before me. Here we go. ♪ Yeah, you got that yummy, yum ♪ ♪ That yummy, yum ♪ ♪ That yummy, yummy ♪ Have you got the downbeat? ♪ Yeah, you got that yummy, yum ♪ One. Three. One. Let's see if you can find the pulse, clap the downbeat slightly harder, but click the rest of the beats in our bar. So one, two, three, four. But as you can see, I've got a lot more lines on my screen right now. Okay, so why is that? That we have more bar lines? Well it's because that in every single bar we're only going to have two beats. Let's have a look at how that looks. Okay, so I've got one, two, one, two, one, two, all the way through my music. And we've got our bars now we've got our boxes, just there. Okay. Instead of clapping and then clicking three times, we just need to go clap, click. Clap, click. So we're clapping on the down beat, on the first beat. One and then we click on the second beat. So one, two, one, two. Let's see if we can read it all the way through. One, two, ready? Here we go. One, two. One, two. One, two. One, two. One, two. One, two. One, two. One, two. Hopefully you stopped right there. If you didn't make sure that you were reading the music and looking at each of the symbols in the music as you clap or click. One more time. One, two, three.
