During today's lesson, we're going to be looking at exchanging the correct number of pennies for items. For this lesson, you will need some objects that you can find in your house. You could use anything like toy cars, toy dolls, keys, books, anything that you can find in your house. You will also need five, 1p coins. If you don't have these, you could draw them, colour them in, and cut them out. You will also need price cards for your objects that you found in your house. I have made my own by drawing the pictures and writing the prices on. You could do the same. So now you know who I am and you've got your resources ready. Let's find out what we're going to do during today's lesson. First, I will show you how to buy an item from the shop by showing the exchange of coins for an item. Next, you will have an opportunity to practise buying an item from the shop by exchanging coins for your chosen item. Finally, you will complete an activity, which item can I buy? Let's buy this apple using our pennies. How many pennies does it cost for this apple? Let's count them out. One. Two. Three. Three pennies. Let's use our pennies to buy this car. How many pennies does this car cost? Let's count them out. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Five pennies. Let's buy this sweet using our pennies. How many pennies does the sweet cost? Let's count them out. One. One penny. Let's buy this bar of chocolate using our pennies. How much does the bar of chocolate cost? Let's count them out. One. Two. Three. Four. Four pennies. How much does this pencil cost? I want to buy this pencil using our pennies. Let's count them out. One. Two. Three. Three pennies. I've got some items that I found around my house and I've put them in my pretend shop. I've got a book and I've made myself a price tag that tells me that my book costs four pennies. I've got a banana and I've made a price tag that tells me my banana costs one penny. A pencil, and my price tag tells me that my pencil costs three pennies. My apple, and my price tag tells me my apple costs two pennies. And a tin. And I've made it price tag that tells me my tin costs five pennies. Now I've also got the money I'm going to spend in my pretend shop. I've got some pennies here, some real pennies. I'm going to count them out. I've got one, two, three, four, five. Five pennies. I'm going to select an item from the shop I wish to buy. And the first item I would like to buy is a banana. So I'm going to have a look at the price tag. And the price tag of the banana tells me it costs one penny. So I need to count out one of my pennies. One. And I'm going to take the banana, because that's now mine. I've exchanged my one penny for the banana, so I can keep my banana now. That belongs to me. Should we try that again? Buying a different item this time. This time I'm going to buy a tin. Now the price tag tells me that my tin costs five pennies. So I need to count out five pennies to pay for the tin. One, two, three, four, five. Five pennies. And I'm going to send those pennies into the shop. And I get to keep the tin, that's now mine, because I had exchanged my five pennies for the tin. Excellent. Let's try that again with a different item. This time I would like to buy a book and the book cost, have a look at my my price tag. Four pennies. So I'm going to count out four pennies to pay for the book. One, two, three, four. Four pennies. Four pennies go in the shop, and I get to keep the book because I have exchanged my pennies for them. Excellent. Let's try that again for a different item. This time I'm going to buy a pencil. The pencil costs three pence, three pennies. So I'm going to count out three of my pennies to pay for the pencil. One, two, three. Three pennies go to the shop. I get to keep the pencil because I've exchanged my pennies for the pencil. So that's mine. Great. And let's try it again with the last item. I'm going to buy the apple, and the apple costs two pennies. So I need to count out how many pennies? That's right, two pennies to pay for it. One, two. The two pennies go to the shop and I get keep the apple because I've exchanged my pennies for the apple. Excellent. Now it's your turn to have a go at practising buying items from the shop. Select one of your items to buy and exchange it for the correct number of pennies that you have written on your price tag. One, two. Yes, I do have enough pennies for the hat. Do I have enough pennies to buy the crisps? Count with me. One, two, three. No I don't have enough pennies to buy the crisps. Good work. I have two pennies. Which item could I buy? Do I have enough pennies to buy the pencil case? Count with me. One, two. No, I don't have enough pennies to buy the pencil case. Do I have enough pennies to buy the hat? Count with me. One, two. Yes, I do have enough pennies to buy the hat. Do I have enough pennies to buy the popcorn? Count with me. One, two. No, I don't have enough pennies to buy the popcorn. Do I have enough pennies to buy the crisps? Count with me. One, two. No, I don't have enough pennies to buy the crisps. Excellent work. You've done really well today exchanging coins for an item. If you'd like to try and make some of these tasks easier, you could use costs up to 3p for your items, rather than 5p, you could place each penny on the pictures of pennies on the price card as you count them out. If you'd like to make these tasks a little bit harder, you could use different coins to make the amounts on the price cards. You could see if you combine more than one item at once with your 5p. For more ideas of tasks that are similar to these, You could make a tuck shop at home and put prices on each item. Practise exchanging your pennies for snacks and treats.
