﻿Hello, and welcome to your design and technology lesson. I am Mrs. Mee and I am your design and technology teacher. I am so excited to meet you. Hopefully you've been with us previously. Today is lesson four. So if you've been with us previously, you'll know that we are learning about cooking and nutrition and we're learning lots about preparing fruits and vegetables. So hopefully you'll find out more about what we're exploring as we look at what we're going to learn in today's lesson. So would you like to join me? Fantastic. Okay, so today's lesson is lesson four and we're going to look at designing and making a savoury salad. So if you remember previously, we designed a fruit salad. Today we're going to look at designing a savoury salad. So in this lesson you are going to need some paper and a pencil. So if you'd like to pause the video now, go and get your paper and pencil. When you've got what you need, come back and press play and we'll continue looking at what we're going to do in today's lesson. Fabulous. Have you got everything you need? Excellent. Now, you know what Mrs. Mee's rules are. If you haven't joined us before, let us share with you what the rules are. Rule number one, that's right, have fun. Have fun, it's really important that we enjoy our learning and exploring. We need to explore, so that means explore with your ideas. So try out new things, experiment with your ideas, try different ideas today. So as we design our savoury salad, maybe put an ingredient in your savoury salad that you wouldn't normally put in there. Try something new. Be confident, and remember, we always need to play safe. So make sure you listen carefully and follow my instructions if there's something that's more dangerous and we need an adult to be present. Okay, so altogether, we're going to complete the intro quiz just to check what we know already. We're going to then recap what we've done previously, so to remind you what you've learnt about previously. We're then going to look at our star words that we're going to use in today's lesson. Then we're going to look at investigating existing food products. Once we've investigated, we're going to start designing ideas for our savoury salad. And then once we've done that altogether, we're going to complete an end of lesson quiz. So that's a very busy lesson, so we best get started, haven't we? Okay, so the first thing we're going to do is a quick intro quiz. So have a listen to Mrs. Mee's questions and please shout out your answers. And then we'll recap what we did previously. Okay, Mrs. Mee's got some questions to ask you before we start today's lesson, just to check what knowledge you have already. Now, before we start preparing food in a kitchen, what must we do before we begin? That's right, we need to clean our work area. Excellent. Before we start preparing our fruit and vegetables, we need to work out what parts of the fruits and vegetables we can't eat and which parts we can eat. How might we remove those parts? What equipment might we use to remove the parts that we don't want to eat? Two things that you could say. What can we do to the ingredient to get rid of the parts that we don't want? What could we do? Well done, we can chop the ingredients, can't we? We can chop the end that we don't want off or we can peel. Well done. Chop or peel. Right, final question, can you give me an example of a food product? Can you name a food product? Well done, a fruit salad. Let's just recap what we've learned previously. So previously we've learned how to identify different fruits and vegetables, haven't we? We've also learned how to prepare those fruits and vegetables in a kitchen environment, haven't we? We've learnt how to clean. We've learned how to peel. We've learned how to cut and we've learnt how to put ingredients together. So we've learnt how to combine. So we've learnt lots previously. Today we're going to design a savoury salad. So we're going to use those skills that we've learned previously to have a go at designing our own savoury salad in today's lesson. What a superstar you are. On that note, let's go through our star words in today's lesson. So we have lots of words that you need to think about and you need to use in today's lesson. So I say, you say, savoury. Well done, excellent, you pronounced that really well. I say, you say, investigate. Well done. Design. Design. Excellent, well done. Next word, mm, sweet. I say, you say, next word, criteria. Criteria. Yes, you're right, we've used some of these words before, haven't we? So we're going to be using some of these star words again in today's lesson. Okay, so the first thing we're going to look at is we're going to investigate. Well done, you spotted it. That's one of our star words. We're going to investigate and look at existing products. What do we mean when we say savoury salad? What do we mean by that, can you tell me? Let's have a look at Mrs. Mee's options. A savoury salad is one that you would eat for lunch/dinner and is not sweet. Or is it option two, a savoury salad is one you would have as a dessert. Would you eat a savoury salad for your lunch or dinner? Or would you have it as a dessert? Have a think, which option. Well done, it is a food product that you would probably have for your lunch or your dinner. And it's not mainly sweet. Although you may have some sweet items in there, the majority of the ingredients are what we call savoury, which is the opposite to sweet. And we will explore that in today's lesson. So before we begin to design our savoury salad, what fruits and vegetables would we put in our savoury salad? Have a little look. What fruits and vegetables might we put in a savoury salad? Would we put fruits in a savoury salad? We would put some fruits in our savoury salad. Have a little think. What ideas have you got? Can you shout them out to me? Excellent. Who said lettuce? Well done if you said lettuce. We might put lettuce in our savoury salad. Any other ideas? Can you spot any other ingredients? Well done. Who said tomato? Excellent. We might put a tomato in our savoury salad. And what is a tomato? Is it a fruit or vegetable? It's a fruit, isn't it? So yes, we do put fruits in our savoury salad. What other ingredient would you say you put in a savoury salad? Who said sweetcorn? Excellent. Sweetcorn is a lovely, delicious vegetable to put in your savoury salad. So actually, you can choose whatever you like. But before we decide, shall we have a look at some existing products? Should we explore some existing savoury salads to help us gather ideas? I think so. So we're going to look at some pictures of savoury salads, delicious savoury salads. So here are some pictures and let's have a look at exploring them some more. So I would like you to identify. That means choose, tell me what the key ingredients are in this savoury salad. So can you have a look at this savoury salad? Can you spot some ingredients? Can you shout them out when you've got them? Okay. Shout out. Excellent. Who said lettuce? Well done if you said lettuce. I can see lettuce. Excuse me, Mrs. Mee's got a tickly cough. Any other ingredients? Radishes. Oh, if you said that, well done, it's a tricky one to spot, isn't it? Can you spot any other ingredients on that salad? Tomatoes. Well done if you got tomatoes. I can spot the tomatoes as well. Any others? Now, some of them are a little bit tricky, aren't they? Crisps. Now, Mrs. Mee thinks they look like crisps, but you would need to look closely. I think they are homemade crisps. But one image maybe looks like a bit of pasta, but I think they're crisps. So hopefully you've had a go at identifying the key ingredients. Okay, so let's have a look at another salad. Whoa, here's a different salad. Can you identify the key ingredients in this savoury salad? Pause the video, have a little think. And when you're ready, shout out your answers or jot them down. Have you got them? What can you spot? Tell me. Well done, that's amazing. Lettuce again. Who shouted lettuce? Well done if you shouted lettuce. I can spot a pepper there. Can you see that pepper? Now, a pepper is actually a fruit, but we treat a pepper as a vegetable. Ooh, who spotted cucumber? Well done if you spotted cucumber. Tomatoes again. Carrots, well done. Excellent, well spotted. So you can see there's lots of different key ingredients in a savoury salad. What about this savoury salad? Can you identify the key ingredients in this savoury salad? What have we got on there? Can you spot them? Rocket leaves. Now, it's a type of lettuce but it's a different type of lettuce. If you said lettuce, well done. Oh, mushrooms. Very nice. Mrs. Mee prefers her mushrooms to be cooked, not raw. But you can have mushrooms on a salad. Orange, ooh, interesting. That's different, isn't it? Tomatoes. And can you spot the red cabbage? Oh, well done if you got those correct. So, all of those salads gave us some ideas. What did you find out? What was the same in all of the salads? What ingredient was common to all? Can you tell me? That's right, lettuce was common to all. Every salad had lettuce or some type of leaf used in the salad. What other ingredient was common to all? Can you spot? That's right, tomatoes. Tomatoes was in every salad, yeah, I'm just checking. What other thing was the same? Yeah, I agree. They're very colourful, aren't they? So there was lots of things that you would have that's common in a salad. So have a little think because you're going to develop your own ideas. What did you find out that was different? What's different in all of the salads? Hmm. What did you find out that was different? Have a think. Yes, I've got one. Can you spot a difference? Carrots. There's carrots on one salad but there's no carrots on the others, well done. So carrot, what else? Yes, well done, orange. Who said orange? Well done. Mushroom, well done. Can you see how we're identifying all of our fruits and vegetables? We're good at this, aren't we? Any others? Yeah, crisps. Ooh, crisps make it a bit more crunchier. Radishes, well done. So you can see salads have common ingredients but some salads have different and that's okay. So by investigating existing products, hopefully that's given you lots of ideas. Have you got lots of ideas already? Excellent. So how else could you investigate other than looking at existing food products? What else could you do? Now, Mrs. Mee put some other salads here with other key ingredients. What could you do to investigate? Really important job, and do you remember we did it in our first lesson? What did we do to investigate food products? Mhm, that's right, we can taste test a range of ingredients. So if you're thinking of putting carrot in your salad, why don't you try it first to see what it tastes like to see if it will go in your salad. You could taste test a range of salads and you could get a range of different salads and try them out, couldn't you? That's a really important job. What a brilliant job it would be if you got paid to just taste food. That would be awesome, wouldn't it? So that is a way of investigating existing products. So now we've got some ideas, we're going to explore designing our own ideas for our own savoury salad. We've investigated, we've looked at them. Hopefully you've tested some ingredients and hopefully you might have the opportunity to test and try out salads before you design your own. Now we're going to create our own idea for a savoury salad. We're going to develop criteria. Well done, that's one of our star words for our salad. We're going to describe the appearance, so what it looks like. We're going to describe the taste, what it tastes like. And we're also going to describe the user. So Mrs. Mee would like you to write a sentence to describe the appearance, the taste and who the user will be. So let's just explore this in a little bit more detail to help you. What words can we describe the appearance of the salad? What words could you use in your short description, your short sentence? Yeah, we could use the word colour. So those salads had different colours, didn't they? Texture, mhm. Shapes, yeah, cut in different shapes. Different sizes, wasn't there? So we had small tomatoes, large tomatoes. Brilliant. So think about those words when you are writing your sentence for appearance. What words would you use to describe the taste? That's right, salty. Excellent. Sweet, mhm. And remember, you might need to taste some first. Sour. Crunchy, excellent. Tasty. Lots of descriptive words, you're really good at this. Juicy. Brilliant. So think about using these words when you use a sentence to describe how your salad will taste. Think about the appearance and the taste. The next thing is to think about the user. So how can we describe the user? What words might we use? What might we consider? Mhm, yeah, we would consider the age. So if you're designing a salad for a young, really young child, five-year-old, would that salad be different to if you were designing a salad for someone who's a bit older, maybe 30 years old? It might be different because they might have different likes and dislikes. So you might need to find out what your user likes. It could be a child, it could be an adult, but find out what they like and to help you come up with a sentence to describe your user. So you are going to create your own idea now for your savoury salad. So we are going to develop criteria for our salad to describe the appearance, what it's going to taste like, and the user. So when you're describing the appearance, you might pick and choose what ingredients you might have in your savoury salad. So pause the video, have a go at writing a sentence for each. When you're finished, press play and we'll carry on today's lesson. Excellent, have you had a go at creating your three sentences? Fantastic. So you could have used this sheet and you can download it to create your sentences. So you need a sentence for appearance, taste, and user. So if you haven't quite done that, you might want to download this sheet and actually write your ideas on here. But this is how you might present it. Shall I show you my sentences that I've created? Brilliant. So my first sentence, the salad will be colourful. So when I choose my ingredients, I need to think about the different colours. Taste, the salad will be crunchy and tasty. Is that a good sentence using my descriptive words? The salad, the user, will be designed for children five to seven years. So that is mine. So you can use my example if you want to help you if you struggle with writing your sentences. You could change those words so you could write the salad will be, and use a different word. The salad will be different word and different word. Have a little think about yours. When you're finished, press press play, and we'll continue. Fantastic. I'm hoping now you've got a set of criteria that you're happy with for the design of your savoury salad. Now we're going to create our own idea for a savoury salad. So have a look at the images below and select which ingredients you would put in your savoury salad. So pause the video. Which ingredients could you put in your savoury salad to meet your criteria? Now remember, Mrs. Mee's needs to be colourful, crunchy and tasty, it's for five to seven-year-olds. I need to think about my criteria. Crunchy, tasty, colourful, five to seven. So I need to choose ingredients that's going to give me lots of colour. So I can't choose all the green vegetables and fruits. I've got to choose lots of different colours. So pause the video, select your five ingredients. You don't have to select these on screen, you can select your own. Pause the video. When you've selected, press play. Brilliant. Have you had a go? So here you can use this space to list your ingredients. So you can download the sheet or you can present it like this on your piece of paper. So I would like you to put your ingredients for your salad. So ingredients for my salad, and you can write them down or you could print the pictures and cut them out and stick them. And that is what Mrs. Mee has done. So Mrs. Mee has presented her ingredients for my salad. So ingredients for my salad: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, and carrots. That's my ingredients for my salad. So once you've presented your ingredients, press play and we'll continue. Have you had a go at presenting your ingredients? Well done. So now you should have five ingredients. Well done if you completed that. Okay, so what else made the salad different apart from the ingredients used? What made them look different? Have a think. That's right, how they were prepared and combined. Some of the ingredients had been sliced. Some of the ingredients were presented at different sizes, weren't they? Some had been grated. The shapes were different. And the way in which they combined were different. So this is something we need to think about when we're making our salad. What sizes, how are we going to prepare them. So hopefully you've learned lots in today's lesson. We're going to complete your end of lesson quiz next and then we'll recap what we've learned today. Some of you may have said tomato, but those were the ingredients that were the same in each salad. Now, today you had the very important job of writing down three sentences, didn't you? That became our list of, what's the key word there? What's our star word? What star word did we use in today's lesson? Criteria, well done. So you wrote down three sentences to describe your criteria. So you now have a set of criteria to describe the appearance, the user and the taste, didn't you? Well done. You've had a fabulous lesson.
