﻿This RHE lesson is called "D is for Danger," where we will be thinking about dangers we find using our electronic devices. Hello, and welcome to your RHE lesson with me, Mr. Mulla, and my friend Frosty. I wonder what adventure we have in store today. What danger are we going to see? Let's see. In today's lesson, you will need your looking eyes and ears, a favourite teddy. Where are we? Oh, it's freezing. What are we doing here? Danger? Danger, here? Oh, there's lots of dangers around. We're not going to be thinking about the dangers in the Antarctic today though. Can you remember what that means from our last lesson? Have you forgotten? Danger is something or someone that would hurt you or cause you harm. Sometimes you can feel it. Sometimes you can hear it. Sometimes you can see the person or the thing that's causing you the harm. But sometimes you might not realise, you might not know, you might not be able to see or hear the thing or the person that's causing you the harm. All dangers are different. I'm going to talk to you about some dangers that you might not see or hear or even know about. Let me explain. Have a look at these programmes. Can you spot something you watch at home? What do you use to watch it? Is it a TV, tablet, computer, or phone maybe? These are all electronic devices. Can you say that? Yes, electronic devices. There are lots of ways you can watch your favourite programme, and when you are watching your programme using any electronic device, you need to be aware of the dangers.

Dangers?

Yes, dangers. My story about your friend, Smartie the Penguin, will show you just that. Story time. "The Adventures of Smartie the Penguin," from Childnet International. It was late at night and Smartie the Penguin was wide awake. He was too excited to sleep because tomorrow was his birthday. He was really hoping to be given a new tablet. The big day came, and Smartie had really enjoyed his birthday party. He had saved his most exciting looking present until the end. "Oh, I really hope this is a tablet of my own," he thought as he began to open it. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." Smartie tore off the wrapping paper in a hurry. Mummy and Daddy Penguin had bought him a brand new tablet. Just what he wanted. Smartie's parents enjoy using the internet and are always there to help Smartie. Smartie was allowed to play on his tablet once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Mummy Penguin helped Smartie to get online and he was off. Smartie was having a super time and decided to use the internet to find out more about polar bears. When Smartie tapped search, something strange popped on his screen. It was scary and Smartie didn't know what to do. "Oh no," thought Smartie. "I don't want to see this. "I hope Mummy and Daddy won't think I've searched for this. "I don't know what to do." Can you help Smartie make the right decision? Should he try to fix the problem by himself and get rid of the picture, or should should he ask his parents for help? Pause the video and tell Teddy. Let's see what he does. "Help!" cried Smartie. "Daddy, Mummy, please help me! "Something has gone terribly wrong. "There's a scary picture on my screen "and I don't want to see it." "Well done Smartie," said Daddy Penguin. "You are a superstar. "Well done for asking for help "and not trying to fix it by yourself." Mummy Penguin was so pleased with what Smartie had done, she taught him a song to help him make sensible choices on the internet in the future. ♪ Before you tap and click ♪ ♪ You need to stop and think ♪ ♪ And tell someone ♪ Mummy Penguin deleted the picture that had popped up, and Smartie continued to play on his tablet. The next morning, Smartie rushed downstairs to keep looking online. Daddy Penguin was already up and about to read his newspaper in the kitchen. Smartie went onto the internet and typed in "all about polar bears." Smartie tapped on the first website but it was very confusing. It said that polar bears live on the beach, but Smartie was sure they liked the cold weather, just like him. Smartie thought that everything on the internet was true, but this didn't sound right. He was really confused. "What do I believe now?" What should Smartie do? Should he just believe what the internet says, or should he ask for help to find the right information? Pause the video and tell Teddy. Let's see, shall we? Let's help Smartie to make the right decision by singing Mummy Penguin's song. One, two, three. ♪ Before you tap and click ♪ ♪ You need to stop and think ♪ ♪ And tell someone ♪ "Help!" shouted Smartie. "Mummy, Daddy, please help me. "I'm trying to find out more about polar bears, "but the information doesn't sound right." "Smartie," replied Mummy Penguin, "what a clever little penguin you are. "Not everything online is true, "so it is always best to check with a grownup first." Mummy Penguin helped Smartie find the right information and everything was fine again. Later on that afternoon, can you guess what Smartie was doing? That's right, Smartie was the back on his tablet playing his favourite game, Snowcraft. He was getting better and better, and trying to beat his top score from yesterday. All of a sudden the tablet beeped and a message appeared on the screen. Another player was trying to talk to Smartie. Smartie felt quite excited. "Hi," they said, "what's your name?" The player continued to talk. "Where do you live?" she asked. Smartie wanted to reply; he wanted to be friendly. But he was also beginning to feel worried. What should Smartie do? Should he reply to the message and talk to the other player, or should he tell Mummy and Daddy instead? Pause the video. Great. Let's help Smartie to make the right decision by singing his special song. Are you ready? One, two, three. ♪ Before you tap and click ♪ ♪ You need to stop and think ♪ ♪ And tell someone ♪ "Daddy Penguin, Mummy Penguin," called Smartie. "Someone is trying to talk to me and I don't know them. "What should I do?" "Oh Smartie, you have been so sensible," said Daddy Penguin. "If you're not sure about someone who is talking to you, "or they make you feel worried, then always tell us. "Not everybody tells the truth on the internet, "and because you don't know this person in the real world, "they are still a stranger. "I will show you how you can stop this player "from speaking to you again." Block. From that day on, Smartie the Penguin always knew how to be safe when using his tablet and playing on the internet. If anything happened that made him feel worried, upset, or confused, he didn't try to fix things by himself. He stopped, thought about what to do, and always asked an adult for help. Smartie's message to you. "I am very lucky because I have Mummy and Daddy Penguin "to help me, but who can help you?" Have a think. Great. In today's lesson you will be thinking about the dangers you may face when using an electronic device. You will learn the story of 'Smartie the Penguin' who receives a tablet for his birthday but when he begins to use it, he is faced with many dangers and does not know what to do about it. You will be shown what steps to take to keep safe using electronic devices through a song and thereafter you will create a penguin eye mask to remind you of the rules that Smartie the penguin learnt, and followed.
